COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

UNHAPPINESS HABITS An article by author Michael Herbert in a recent Health and Wellbeing Newsletter (Vital Staff No. 35, 2012) explains how we can improve our happiness when we stop the following behaviours:

Blaming When something goes wrong the tendency is to blame others. However, when we take responsibility it empowers us, we learn and we become better and smarter. Our happiness grows because we are more confident and more competent. A friend of mine jokes that we like to have someone to blame because “no one wants to be a self-made failure”.

Impressing We place ourselves under enormous pressure when we feel the need to impress others. It is important to be ourselves and to be comfortable in our own skin.

Being Inflexible As we get older it is easy to become rigid and cling to the past. The challenge is to keep learning and moving forward. Happiness comes with the ability to grow and improve in the midst of fear and insecurity.

Interjecting Apart from it being annoying when someone interrupts us, it is extremely rude. Such rudeness destroys friendships and the happiness that comes from them.

Complaining When we complain we make ourselves and others miserable. We improve our happiness when we focus on solutions rather than complaints.

Controlling Good relationships are based on mutual respect. When one person exercises power and control over another, it is unlikely that there will be a friendship which creates happiness.

Holding Back We can burn up much nervous energy worrying about the future. When we get involved and focus on the present moment we are more likely to experience fulfilment and happiness.

The message is that we can improve our happiness and that of others around us when we avoid these negative tendencies. Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

YEAR 12 GRADUATION DINNER Our Year 12 2012 Graduation was an outstanding success. A beautiful night and celebration for our Year 12 students and their parents. I appreciate the wonderful support of Fr Donnelly and Fr James and all the staff who attended our Graduation. Congratulations to the parents and staff committee who prepared the venue and organised a lovely environment for our celebration. This group was led by Heidi Flanagan and they worked wonderfully together as a team.

END OF YEAR PROGRAM Please remember our program for the end of the year. In an effort to keep students in the College engaged in learning for a greater proportion of Term 4, Semester 2 examinations are commencing 5th December. This date has been advertised in the parent calendar and is in the newsletter this term. This will mean that there will be a couple of non-class days for students to enable staff to complete marking, collate marks, prepare reports and awards.

Research confirms the importance of feedback from teachers for effective student learning so we will have students return to school to review exam papers, receive reports and attend academic award ceremonies.

I urge all students to make best use of this time in an effort to end the year achieving their personal best in their studies.

I ask that any parent who requires supervision for their son/daughter on these non-class days please contact the office in order that adequate plans can be put in place. ROWING REGATTA – CONGRATULATIONS Mr Alan McCartney is our College Maintenance Coordinator and our rowing coach and I wanted to sincerely congratulate him on all his time and effort dedicated to Rowing for our students. He has been working very long hours after work and on Saturdays in order to develop our Rowing academy in the College. I am indebted to Alan and I know our students will benefit from his passion and expertise. The students who competed last Sunday were successful and are supported by a group of parents and other adults in the committee. I know from the commitment and dedication of all involved this new venture will be long lasting and successful. SCHOOL FEES AND SUBJECT FEES Please note that accounts should have been finalised by 16th November 2012. To ensure that your student receives their Semester 2 2012 school report prompt payment is requested by Friday 14th December. The Parish Finance Committee has asked the College to ensure all accounts are cleared by the end of 2012.

EXAMINATIONS

Exam Timetables have been given to students. Copies of these can be found on the school Moodle page under Term 4 Assessments. Study Guides for all exams can also be found on this also. Students are strongly encouraged to use these study guides and the Blank Study Timetable to develop an effective study program for Weeks 7-10. Study should include summarising workbook and textbook notes as well as devising and practising exam style questions. Year 7 and 8 should be doing 1 ½ hours study per night and Year 9 and 10 2 hours would be expected. Year 11 students would be doing 2 ½ - 3 hours per night. ABSENCE FROM EXAMS Students are reminded that it is compulsory to be at school during the period of the exam block from Wednesday 5th to Tuesday 11th December where they will be completing their exams. If a student is absent on the day of the exam, the College needs to be contacted that morning via a phone call to the office before 8.45am. Upon returning to the College you need to see Mr Lutton at the Studies Coordinators’ office before morning PC so that a time can be organised for the exam to be completed. The designated non-class days of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of Week 10 (12th to the 14th December) will be allocated for the completion of any missed exam. Failure to complete an exam without a satisfactory reason will result in a mark of zero being awarded for that task. Ian Lutton Acting Curriculum Coordinator
