    Dear Residents,

After much anticipation, Jurong Spring Playfields is officially launched! This beautiful complex is an integrated sports hub, which is a result of the collaboration between the Town Council and Sport Singapore. Together, we are proud to introduce our playfields as Singapore’s first Active Health@SIP facility. Read on to find out what this means!

Meanwhile, there are around 32,554 trees under the Town Council’s purview. While these beautiful products of Mother Nature offer pleasant green views throughout our Jurong-Clementi Town, this also calls for regular horticulture maintenance.

Horticulture maintenance means a lot more than just cutting grass. Our workers are tasked with carrying out daily inspection of matured trees to ensure that these plants are not overgrown and more importantly, do not pose any danger to people.

To aid our workers’ job efficiency, I am encouraging residents to give us feedback if there are trees that are not well-maintained in your neighbourhood. You may send your feedback via our hotline 6561 2222 or e-mail [email protected]. Those who call after working hours may contact EMSU hotline at 1800 275 5555. Together, let us appreciate and maintain Mother Nature’s gifts to our land.

    Ang Wei Neng Chairman

    Jurong-Clementi Town Council

    Majlis Bandaran Jurong-Clementi

RESIDENTS INTERACT WITH 4G MINISTERS AT COMMUNITY VISIT

esidents of Jurong Central had the rare chance of meeting and talking to three ministers at the same time on 15 July 2018. During a community visit that was unlike any other, Education Minister Ong

Ye Kung, Manpower Minister Josephine Teo and National Development Minister Lawrence Wong provided residents with opportunities to clarify issues close to their hearts. They were hosted by Jurong GRC MP Mr Ang Wei Neng.

The visit started at the neighbourhood centre opposite Jurong Green Community Centre. Ministers then made a stopover at several studio apartments at Block 499 Jurong West Street 41, where they were introduced to the Red Cross Home Monitoring System installed in the flats. Singapore Red Cross' Deputy Head of Community Resilience Mr Sudirman Othman explained: “These sensors study the behavioural patterns of the elderly for two weeks. The system will then alert us if there is any deviation from observed patterns, such as not waking up at their usual time, or not emerging from the toilet beyond a certain timing.”

At the ministers’ next stop, they witnessed volunteers distributing necessities to needy residents as part of Project Hand-in-Hand at Block 373 Jurong East Street 32. The ministers ended the visit at the Sky Garden located at the rooftop of Block 372A. There, preschool children from PCF Sparkletots at Block 308 gained knowledge on growing crops from volunteers. Principal Ms Joann Tan said: “Children only see the harvested crops at supermarkets. We want to bring them out of the classroom to teach them about the aspect of growing as well.”

Speaking at a dialogue session at Jurong Green Community Club later that day, Mrs Teo said: “I am mightily impressed by the amount of work that is done by the grassroots [volunteers] here. The care, the passion that you bring to your grassroots volunteerism is very commendable.”

    健康与保健并重的生活

YOUR DESTINATION FOR HEALTH AND WELLNESS

hat used to be a simple park in Jurong West Street 42 has been transformed into an

impressive, well-equipped hub for sports and recreation. Nestled among Blocks 548, 549, 556 and 558, the newly revamped Jurong Spring Playfields neighbourhood park is a unique sports and recreation hub as it caters to various sporting and leisure activities that can be enjoyed by all age groups.

The park’s official launch on 7 July 2018 saw residents explore the double-storey hub’s facilities, which include a green plateau with an exercise and viewing deck on the upper level, and a multi-purpose court and activity area on the lower level. Toddler and adventure playgrounds, multi-generation fitness

corners, a futsal court, a jogging track and barbecue pits are among the other amenities available.

These were made possible, thanks to the Neighbourhood Renewal Programme (NRP) in collaboration with Sport Singapore's Sport-In-Precinct (SIP)programme. The NRP also included projects such as sheltered linkways, drop-off points, pavilions and barrier-free access to bring greater convenience and connectivity.

The neighbourhood park will also be the first Active Health@SIP facility in Singapore that is specially designed to provide an endearing and creative space for the community. Social and Family Development Minister Desmond Lee, who is also MP for Jurong GRC, said the Town Council partnered with Sport Singapore for the first time to work together on a public exercising facility. “We want a conducive environment where we can all exercise and spend time together as a family. Use this place and care for it well,” he told residents in his welcome address.

Apart from using the new facilities, residents also took part in fun activities and helped themselves to a variety of food served during the launch carnival. Among them was Madam Atiqah Yaakob, 35, who was with her mother and toddler. “When it was the old park, I didn’t dare to come here, especially at night. It didn’t feel safe as it wasn’t well-lit. Now, not only does this place have bright lights, we have ample shaded space too, so we don’t have to worry about rain or shine,” she said.

Mr Clement Teo, 21, said the newly revamped neighbourhood park looked pretty and practical. “Families, couples and individuals will benefit from this as they can spend quality time while trying to keep fit,” said Mr Teo.

YOUR DESTINATION FOR HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Already making good use of the jogging tracks, Mr Robert Goh, 48, who was exercising at the time with his wife Madam Grace Goo, 47, said he was happy with the upgrading of the neighbourhood park. “It gives a completely different feel now. It feels bright and safe. We can come to jog here at night now too.”

    THE GUARDIAN OF OUR GREENERY

he immaculate green landscapes in Jurong-Clementi are borne out of pure hard work by the Town Council’s horticulture team. What do they do

and how do they do it? Horticulture manager Mr Foo Cewei, 35, shares his insights with us.

What do you do as a horticulture manager?I establish and maintain horticultural standards and practices in the estates. I also manage and support the plants' overall health and condition. I need to check for defects as well, such as bug infestations, diseases, as well as deformation in trees. These include dead branches, rotten trunks and cavities. An important part of my job scope is to conduct regular pruning of all plants and trees to ensure that they are safe and not overgrown.

Why is it important to maintain our trees and plants? We maintain them to ensure that residents can enjoy greenery around their estate under safe circumstances.

How does the health of these plants affect us?Let’s say there is a slanted tree in the estate which suddenly sheds leaves. This could mean that the tree is being attacked by disease or pests. This can cause the tree to look unhealthy and affect the surrounding landscape, which includes residents' flats and the common areas.

The health and structure of the trees will also be affected, potentially becoming a safety risk as the decayed limbs of the trees could fall and injure someone.

How do plants affect the liveability of our neighbourhood?Plants beautify rural and urban landscapes. They “soften” the appearance of the estate and reduce the stress of living in a concrete jungle.

How does one person manage the needs of such a big town?I provide support to the property managers and officers to ensure that standards of horticulture, arboriculture and turf maintenance are adhered to. This includes managing and supervising contractors to ensure that the horticultural works are carried out properly.

Overgrown shrubs are trimmed regularly to maintain a neat appearance.

Pruning trees keeps them healthy and s

    FIVE QUESTIONS WITH:

Did you know? You need keen eyes to be a horticulture manager as visual inspection of plants is a daily routine. Identifying overgrown weeds and shrubs, and spotting bare areas where plants can be added, are some ways visual inspection is done. The frequency of checks on trees and plants increases when the weather is abnormal. This ensures a safe and clean neighbourhood.Apart from working with property managers and officers, a horticulture manager also liaises with pest control agencies to keep our town green and beautiful.

HONOURING THE LATE DR ONG CHIT CHUNG

ukit Batok residents may remember their former MP, the late Dr Ong Chit Chung, as the person who touched

numerous lives through the various social assistance and self-development programmes which he pioneered. Hundreds of residents got a chance to learn about his legacy at the month-long Dr Ong Chit Chung Memorial Exhibition that was launched on 14 July 2018.

Held at Bukit Batok Community Club Hall, the launch was officiated by MP for Bukit Batok SMC Mr Murali Pillai, and Special Advisor to Chairman of People’s Association Board Mr Lim Boon Heng. Also present were former Bukit Batok MP Mr Chai Chong Yii, and Dr S. Vasoo, who was the late Dr Ong Chit Chung’s parliamentary colleague.

Dr Ong left an indelible mark in the history of Bukit Batok town. During his tenure as MP, Dr Ong enhanced the town’s amenities by supporting the construction of a bus interchange, a swimming pool, polyclinic and West Mall shopping centre. He was known to spearhead fundraising efforts to build the Bukit Batok Community Club on two separate occasions. On top of that, he also developed the Bukit Batok cultural scene by encouraging residents to bond through interest groups at the neighbourhood community club.

Dr Ong’s compassion led him to launch support schemes helping the underprivileged in the community. The Share-A-Meal programme which he pioneered has since evolved to the present-day Food and Groceries vouchers scheme which helps needy families. Dr Ong also helped to build a social safety network in Bukit Batok by setting up voluntary welfare organisations for the benefit of residents. After his death, the Dr Ong Chit Chung Bursary Fund was set up in 2008 in his memory to support children from less privileged backgrounds.

ore than 20 gardens throughout Jurong-Clementi Town have been honoured with the Community In Bloom Awards 2018. The biennial awards by the National Parks Board (NParks)

recognise and reward stellar gardening efforts by community groups in Singapore. The awards aim to motivate community gardeners to improve gardening standards, and promote gardening as a fun, healthy activity.

This year, 541 community gardens from housing estates, educational institutions and organisations took part – a near 100% increase in participation compared to 2014’s edition. Judging criteria included the level of community involvement, gardening quality, as well as use of environmental and biodiversity-friendly practices.

We would like to congratulate our town’s talented, hardworking gardeners for bagging these hard-earned accolades. Impressive work!

THE COUPLE THAT HELPS TOGETHER, STAYS TOGETHER

    夫唱妇随助人为乐,携手到老

he friendly faces of Mr Soh Kim Leng, 69, and his wife Madam Tay Sieo Giok, 68, are immediately recognisable to many residents staying around Block 401 Jurong West

Street 42. The elderly pair have been running Binli Sundry Shop on the ground floor there for almost 20 years, yet are also known to be selfless neighbours and trustworthy friends.

On some days, they are babysitters. One of their neighbours is a father who lets his two kids stay around the shop to wait for his return. Mr Soh looks after the two children after they return from school. “When they’re hungry, I offer them bread and their father always pays me back later,” he said.

Other days, they are trusted caretakers. “One neighbour gave us her house keys so that we could open the door to let her maid in every day. I did that for 10 days straight,” said Madam Tay. Mr Soh added that a few neighbours have also asked them to keep an eye on their homes while they were overseas.

Recalling a fire that happened on the fifth floor five years ago,

Mr Soh said: “I was at my shop when I saw firemen rushing over. They learned that the owner wasn’t home.” Mr Soh had seen the family walk past his shop earlier that day, and offered to call the owner to inform him of the incident. “It turned out that he had left the stove on,” said Mr Soh.

He added that the couple are close to their neighbours as many of them are regular customers, and have been for years. “We know almost everyone living in our block and we keep each other’s contact numbers. It’s not surprising (that we are close) considering we see each other often,” he said.

The couple’s benevolence has earned them a nomination for the Good Neighbour Award by resident Mr Jason Ho. The 33-year-old chairman of Jurong

Central Zone 4 Residents’ Committee said he was 14 when he first got

to know Mr Soh. “Mr Soh and his wife are kind and generous.

Apart from babysitting, they occasionally offer free drinks and food to the needy. They also offered to sponsor our community events. These are just some of many examples of their kindness," said Mr Ho.
