This is the first time for us to go to Japan, And we attend the Japanese course but finally we found

that our Japanese level is not so high. Consequently, we decided to write this passage into English.

When we arrived at the Cheng Tian international airport, we was surprised because of the people's

kindness and our supporter came to the airport to welcome us. After a while, we took the bus to

school and on the way to school we saw the beautiful buildings and the clean road.

After 2 hours later, we arrived at the school's center teaching building and we ate the delicious

Japanese food, the only thing I want to say is that it's perfect!

At the very first days of Japanese course we studied Japanese economy and history, the teacher was

kind and the course was very interesting. But as the teaching course was getting difficult, we don't

know how to answer the questions in Japanese. Foturnately, the teacher can speak English and we

4

can answer the questions in English. Now I will show you our classroom.

At the summer program, we had made many friends with others, we studied together, we helped

each other, we discussed with each other. And we also went for fun with each other. In spare time, we

also went to the shopping mall, this experience is a wonderful memory. We also wore the traditional

Japanese clothes and we took pictures with each other. Let us show you some pictures

The Kamakura Trip

There is a lot of things who fascinated us but the visit that we prefer is without a doubt the

Kamakura trip. During our free time in the weekend. We decided to visit a city named Ka

makura. In order to go there , you have to take a train for one hour but it worth it. Kamak

ura is a typical Japanese city. The landscape in this town are typical from Japan, peaceful an

d very beautiful. There is a lot of things to do in Kamakura, like visit the temples. If you li

ke the old Japanese architecture you will love this place. In some districts you have the feeli

ng to go back 300 years ago. You have to see those temples. You can also visit the bamboo f

orest. Effectively even if Kamakura is at only one hour from Tokyo, you can have the feeling

to be in the middle of a small village in the forest. And for finish you can also go to the be

ach. The Kamakuras beachs are huge and there is a lot of bars on it where you can bave a

drink I hope i gave you the envy to visit Kamakura. Have fun with the CUC Program.

CUC Summer Program 2016

The summer program started on 10th July. After a 15 hours

flight we Germans finally arrived very tired but extremely excited

about the following two weeks to Japan.

We started this experience with a little Welcome-Party,

where people all over the world came together (India, Vietnam,

America/Hawaii). During the week we had class in the morning

and in the afternoon we had practical trips to Japanese

companies, cultural places and activities. In the last two weeks

we learned so much about Japanese culture, the history of the

country and arts. And secondly there was also a lot to learn

about the economic development of Japan and which problems

they had since the “bubble burst”.

Day by day we knew each other better and better and had so

much fun at the activities of the program and of course in our

free time. It was great to see how helpful and friendly everybody

is in Japan and which strong friendships we made during

this short period of time because we were spending every single

minute together.

For us Germans, the Japanese cuisine was something total

new. We found out that the Japanese cuisine is full of fried

meat and of course miso soup and rice, which is served for

almost every meal. Eating Okonomiyaki, Sushi and Yaki niku

was very different to German food and it tasted sooooo delicious.

The lunch at “University Dining” was really really good

and I’m sure we will miss the great fish, we eat nearly every

day.

There were so many highlights, so that it is impossible to describe

them all. But visiting traditional shrines like Asakusa and

Kameido conveyed us a deep insight in Japanese traditions

and culture. Very traditional was also the Yukata experience.

9

A Yukata is a kind of “Summer-Kimono”. To wear those typical

clothes from Japan was very exciting and a new experience.

We have visited Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal. This huge

company was really impressive. We had the privilege to visit

the factory, learn something about the processes behind the

scenes and see the process of making steel.

For us the wood block print activity was a perfect opportunity

to deepen our knowledge of Japanese arts and besides

everybody of us has a very traditional souvenir to take

back home.

Every day we really enjoyed the support by the CUC students.

It was more than just a support! We spent the weekends

together, went to a typical Japanese karaoke bars and

had a great time together. On the weekends we spent the

whole day exploring Tokyo, Kamakura and other famous

sightseeing spots in Japan. And by the help of the supporters

we even got a more traditional and exciting insight in Japanese

culture than we could have never imagined before.

In conclusion the last two weeks have been full of exciting

moments, we have learned smth. about a foreign country,

and – most important – we made friends all over the world

and learned a lot about other cultures and habits.

We will never forget this Summer Program and will keep this

great country forever in a very good memory.

Thank you!

Greetings from Germanys

MEGHA SURTANIYA / MAITRAI DAK / MANISHA DARYANI /

KULDEEP BOHRA / TANUSHREE BISWAS

This year a group of five students (Megha Surtaniya, Manisha Daryani, Kuldeep Bohra, Tanushree

Biswas and Maitrai Dak) along with Dr. Shubham Goswami as faculty Chaperone has participated

the CUC summer exchange program. We all were very much exciting to visit Japan, an island nation

in the Pacific Ocean with high-rise-filled cities, palaces, cherry blossoms, shrines and temples along

with pop culture.

The program was well structured to provide a best mix of academic and real life experiences. The

class room lectures were very informative to provide knowledge about Japanese art, culture and

country economics. We had real life experience during visits to shrine, museum, Science Park and

Steel industry and better understand the traditions via Yukata experience, Wood block printing and

watermelon piñata.

First day started with the lecture by Prof. Allen on culture and art of Japan and by Prof. Fukuzawa

provided insight about Japanese economics. All these lectures series was very information and

helped us to better understand the country and the culture. We are thankful to them.

11

At the evening we had a campus tour followed by the welcome part. The party was a fun event and

provided us about the do and don’t does elements of the program. Second day we visited Asakusa, a

very popular Buddhist temple, built in the 7th century. We enjoyed the shopping street that provides

temple visitors with a variety of traditional, local snacks and tourist souvenirs. From Asakusa we

visited Tokyo SkyTree, it became the tallest structure in Japan in 2010. It was really fascinating to

see such a tall structure of 634.0 metres.

On the third day we had a hand on experience of Japanese traditional dress called ‘Yukata’ (a casual

summer kimono usually made of cotton or synthetic fabric). The dress gives us a feeling of comfort

and bring close to Japanese culture. In the evening we enjoyed the summer festival. Here we have

played many interesting and enticing Japanese traditional games. We have participated in almost

all games and also won prices. We really enjoyed in that evening.

12

Next day we went to National Museum of emerging science and Innovation (miraikan). It is Japan's

major science center located in Daiba, Tokyo. It has gadgets that link people and cutting-edge science

and technology. There were many interactive exhibits, demonstrations and Robots to experience with.

It was really a life time experience for us.

On fifth day we had visited the Life Safety Learning Center. The center was established with a

motive to enhance people knowledge and activities in disaster prevention. We have been provided

with disaster prevention experiences like earthquake experience, fire extinguishing experience,

smoke experience, and a movie of the Great East Japan Earthquake. The tour was very informative

and helpful for us. Following with this we have also visited Kameido Tenjin Shrine, which was a

green, quite place.

13

On weekends we had visited Disney Sea and shopping centers including Akihabara, Harajuku street

and Ueno park. We enjoyed the thrilling rides of Disney sea including tower of terror, center of earth

etc. We found it to be one of the best theme parks in the world. Then next day we went to Akihabara

and got amazed to see the largest collection of all kinds of electronic appliances and devices in the

world. Ueno Park is a large public in central Tokyo. It was a beautiful and pleasant place to walk.

Visit to Harajuku's street was a remarkable experience to see street market full of cafés, gift shops

and fashion boutiques and fashionable items.

Next day we went to Edo-Tokyo Museum, a museum which informs about the past and present of

Tokyo. We were able to see vividly illustrates of the past of Tokyo and able to experience and learn

about various aspects of earlier Tokyo, such lifestyle, architecture and cultural heritage.

14

The event of iSquare was very much interesting for us. It enabled us to know about different country,

their culture, famous places, food and other major aspects. We had a lot of fun there.

Next day we had a Japanese cultural experience with wood block painting. The technique best

known for its use of Wood as they use wood block for painting and coloring based on the drawing

outlines. It was really a great experience for all of us. The industry visit to Nippon Steel has also

provided us insight about the working of a steel plant and understands the importance of renewable

sources of energy. The company is recycling 1/3 of Japan Plastic with 0% wastage. This was really a

remarkable task.

15

On the last day we had participated in farewell party for CUC summer program. We all had great fun

in singing and dancing together.

On behave of SPSU, we all are grateful to CUC to provide us a life time experience in Japan.

FEDERICO TAICHER / RAM BULATNIKOV / SHAHAR SHANI

It isn’t easy to summarize such a great experience in only a few paragraphs. We met here amazing

people, had a great time traveling around, learning, and exploring new cultures.

It all started around 3 months ago, when our school issued a message about the opportunity to join

this program. All 3 of us replied right away stating that we want to be a part of this, and we are all

convinced now that it was the right decision.

With a lot of excitement we prepared everything, and on Saturday, July 9th, said goodbye to Israel.

We arrived at Narita airport and enjoyed a very warm welcome by the supporters, they did a really

good job of showing us around a bit and escorting us to the university, where we got to meet all the

other students at the orientation and afterwards at the dorm.

And here the real fun began. The mornings flew by with very interesting classes, both in the arts and

economy fields. The afternoon trips were all very interesting, from the trip to Asakusa and to the

Nippon Steel factory, we enjoyed each and every one of them. We managed to learn and enjoy life in

Japan at the same time, and we have many great memories we will take back home.

Both the supporters and the local students were always very nice and helpful, and showed a genuine

and honest interest in learning more about our country and culture, gestures which we were

flattered by. We took so many pictures in the past 2 weeks that we couldn’t help but feel like

celebrities sometimes.

As soon as we get home we will make sure all our friends at the university know what a great plan

and experience this is, and will make sure to encourage as much people as we can to try and join this

program, and in general visit Japan, a really beautiful country, full of tradition, history and culture.

This article is also a great opportunity to thank all the staff, supporters and CUC students. We are

very lucky to have been able to meet such a colorful and wonderful group of people, who were always

nice and willing to make our stay pleasant.

So thank you all for a great time, keep being awesome, and we hope to meet you again in Israel or

Japan soon.

lots of presentation to do in both program and classes.

Few days later I got used to this program and started to enjoy it the

supporters gave all of efforts to help students and the staffs too. In

the week ends, I went to the Disney land, Shibuya, Harajuku,

Sinjuku and Ikebukuro. I took 13 attractions in Disney land and

spend lots of money in shopping spots of Tokyo. Also, I’ve been to

Hanabi at Arakawa River wearing Yukata. It was great chance to

feel ‘Japan’.

I appreciate for CUC summer school for letting me to experience

From the first beginning when i knew I was selected to participate in this summer program, I've

wanted to spend my summer vacation in Japan. All of my friends had been to Japan and told me they

had a great time here. Therefore, I was looking foward to coming to Japan. Before the program

started, the supporter contacted me and I felt his hospitality even under the circumstance that I

didn't speak Japanese. And I could feel the kindness of Japanese. During the two weeks of this

program, I have made a lot of friends from Japan and other countries. It's the wonderful summer

program. Experiencing the Japanese culture and wearing yukata were so impressive. Teachers,

supporters, and participants from the world made this summer program much more memorable.

Thanks everyone for giving me the happiness that will last long. It's great to know all of you and I

hope that everyone will keep in touch in the future.

SHAO HUNG, OY YANG

I was so excited when I was noted that I got the chance to participate in the summer program of CUC.

I have been studying Japanese for a long time, but had no chance experience the university lessons

and culture activities in Japan. In this program I found many of supporters and administrators were

motivated to give us a wonderful program. For example, in the summer festival, they made a whole

night market and created every detail finely. And also every supporter who was in the charge of the

vendor tried their best to create an enthusiastic atmosphere. Therefore, I really appreciated all the

efforts you have done to us and I hope one day my school will have this kind of big program like

CUC.

TING CHEN, LAI

I'm really glad to participate CUC summer program in 2016. Because of this program, I could come

to Japan again and experience the university life here. During the past 15 days, we went to classes in

the morning. The professors are very knowledgeable and they prepared good materials to teach us.

Also they always interact with students, which makes me feel they cared about the students very

much. After the morning classes, we had different activities to do in the afternoons. My favorite one

is the tour of Asakusa. I really liked the atmosphere there, and the ice cream there was so tasty. We

also visited sky tree on that day. I was excited to go to those places since they gave me a feeling that I

23

really arrived in Tokyo. In addition, the meals CUC provided us were really good, so we could have

much energy every day. And most important of all, I really appreciate the help of all supporters in

this program. They were so friendly and helpful to take care of us. Our lives wouldn't be so

interesting and happy without them. All the teachers from international center also treated us so

nicely and always wore smiles. Thanks to this program, I have made Japanese friends, met so many

people from different countries and got to know more about Japanese studies, culture and so on.

Thank you CUC for giving us such a good memory. This would be unforgettable for me and I really

hope to meet everyone again in the future.

YONG CHUN, ZOU

I was thrilled when I found out I was selected as one member to participate in the CUC summer

program. Though I have never been Japan, I still have immense interest in the culture and language

there. But, i never picture that I will meet and make lots of friends here. All the people I meet are

really friendly and nice to me. I appreciate that very much.

Moreover, a series of traditional and educational activities are really awesome and impressive.

Except for taking great classes, I went to Asakusa and lots of meaningful museums. And I love it and

enjoy it!

At last, I think the best part of this program is that you can experience Japanese culture and interact

with people from very different backgrounds all over the world.

You can broaden your international viewpoints and experience a myriad of things happened every

moment.

I will never regret when I grow old and look back.

I am happy to have the chance to join this summer program. In two weeks, I made many friends

from different countries. I have also learned a lot of knowledge from art course and economic course.

Especially, we have many presentations in the class, so I had the chance to discuss with classmates

from different countries. In addition to the courses, we also visited the museum, experienced the

Japanese cultures, visited the shrine, etc. The most impressive activity is that we visited Asakusa

with Japanese high school students. That is my first time to visit the shrine. It is magnificent and

filled with many foreigners. Therefore, the Japanese high school student taught me how to pray for

good luck.

25

鄭艾玲 CHENG, AI-LING

It is my great pleasure to participate CUC summer program. Thanks Chiba University of

Commerce provides us this opportunity to experience more about Japan as well as befriend with

participants from different countries. The CUC summer program

offers courses for helping students learn more about Japan’s

finance, culture and art. Moreover, every afternoon of school day,

students will have the chance to visit tourist regions, companies

and museum in Japan, which offer students chances to learn

about Japanese enterprises and its history as well as art.

One of the most unforgettable activities I want to mention is

that we made wood block print in the summer program. The

specialist of wood block print taught us how to do the wood block

print patiently. This is our honor to learn from the master and to

see how he prints the painting in person. The CUC summer

program no doubt is the best program that I had participated.

Thanks the teachers in the CUC international center and all supporters of the program. The

program makes my summer vacation unforgettable.

方慧心 FANG, HUI-HSIN

I am really glad to join this program. It is definitely the best memory in this summer. I not only

made friends with people from different countries, but also experienced Japanese life style with local

students. Via this program, we learned to understand and embrace different cultures. We are all in

the same world. The most unforgettable experience is wearing yukata. This was my first time to

wear it. The teacher carefully helped me to wear it on. Looking at this, I felt so excited. This is the

time my dream came true. Dress like a Japanese, feel like a Japanese. Everyone looked so beautiful.

Also, we took lots of nice photos. Thank you very much.

It is my honor to participate 2016 CUC Summer

Program. Even though it is not my first time to Japan, but

everything in CUC is a whole new experience that I have

never had before. There are countless great memories of

ours in Japan. I have been excited to live in the Tatami room

for a long time, and CUC provides us the best living space,

food, and Japanese style treatment.

In the morning is the lesson for History of Japanese

Financial Markets, which increases a lot of opportunity to

practice speaking Japanese in economical professions. After

the finance class, we have culture class in Arts and Material

crafts. The evolution of culture from Buddhism to animation

has been hundreds of years in Japan. It is also a lot of fun on

the weekends that we have the free time for whole day. We visits many places, such as Shibuya,

Shinjuku, Kichijoji, Shimoitazawa. We are all appreciated the help of all the supporters. They

accompany us to go to the places we like to visit. Some day, we would like to come back again, and we

are also welcome all the students from different countries to experience our school life in our school,

Our CUC Experience

Words cannot describe the experience we had at the CUC Summer Program. Before arriving at the

CUC Summer Program, we were very nervous and excited to experience something new. All of the

preparations we did before coming were extremely exhilarating. We have both been to Japan before,

but not on the same level that we experienced being in this program. From the moment we learned

that we got accepted into the program, we prepared for Japan as much as possible. We both reviewed

on our Japanese language and culture skills. We also spent many weeks worrying about the omiyage

that we wanted to bring for the faculty, staff, supporters, and anyone who was involved in creating

this experience because we wanted it to represent a piece of Hawai’i.

During the program, there were many unforgettable experiences. For one thing, the classes were

more immersive than we expected it to be. We learned about the emotional, psychological, and

aesthetic aspects of Japanese artwork and history. The both of us enjoy learning about the

Japanese culture and history so this class was great. We also learned about the economics in Japan

and challenged us to think about economics on a global scale. This class was interesting and gave a

new perspective of what we learned about the Japanese, besides the language and culture.

We especially enjoyed the field trips we took almost everyday that gave us a pieces of the Japanese

culture. This helped us a lot, because we were able to learn from what our classes taught us through

visual and hands-on experience.

28

Being able to meet and interact with people from all over the world made for many unforgettable

memories, too. We were pretty anxious and nervous about meeting others because Hawai’i seems so

far from the rest of the world. The students we met introduced us to their own culture and ways of

life, which is something we would never experience back home in Hawai’i. Many of the memories

were made unexpectedly. For instance, all of the girls in the dormitory put aside their differences in

lifestyle and culture and came together through one common interest. That was an amazing thing to

us because we were able to bond through something so minor, yet it made a significant impact on all

of us. We learned that no matter how far apart we may live, we can still have amazing times together

and learn so much about the rest of the world. It will be hard to forget the people we met and those

we formed close friendships with.

We can honestly say that CUC’s Summer Program is unlike any other. There are things that

happened over the course of this program that would never have happened anywhere else. It was

definitely something we will carry with us in the future. It was an honor to bring a piece of Hawai’i to

this program. We want to wish everyone at CUC a warm mahalo and a hui hou, as a special thank

you for all the hard work and support that we received during this program. We are so grateful to

have had the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful program.

We had a great Summer program during the last two weeks. In the art class, the professor showed

us lots of special painting in different periods of japanese history. In the economic and market class,

we learned the development of the japanese economy and finance. Besides the content offered by the

professors, we also did some research for our final presentations for both classes. For this purpose,

university teams were split between different groups. Studying in different groups was a good

experience. It was a good way to learn about others and make new friends.

The afternoon activities allowed us to go out and learn more about modern Japan. The museum and

company visits gave us a good idea of the development of the japanese culture and economy. Certain

sites such as the Miraikan or the Safety Center had interactive learning opportunities that we had

not experienced before, which made them very interesting.

This summer program gave us a great chance to learn about Japan and make friends from all over

the world. The CUC supporters and staff were especially friendly and helpful. We are grateful for

CUC's hospitality and the opportunity that was offered to us. We had a great time!

CUC Summer program was one of the best experiences we have ever had in life. There were so many

things about giving and receiving I learnt through this program. It was not only all about knowledge

but also friendship. Having opportunities to learn interesting knowledge about Japanese Art and

Culture from Professor Allen and Japan’s economic from professor Fukuzawa were precious gifts

for me and all others. More than that, it was an amazing chance for me to be friend with a lot of

talented and nice friends from all over the world. It was unforgettable time that we studied together,

did assignments and team work while having fun; we talked and shared our feeling and honest

stories. Everything was so inspiring and touching to me. For all of you who are walking through

these feeling of us. We would love to share some of great moment of CUC summer program.

Message from International Center

I am delighted that the 6th CUC Summer Program was another resounding success. This year, we had 42

participants from 9 universities, with three accompanying professors. From the first welcome to the last farewell,

we could see the bonding process both inside and outside the classrooms. It was wonderful to see the students

forming friendships which we hope will endure the test of time and form a basis of true mutual understanding and

goodwill. Congratulations and many happy returns to all participants. We hope your introduction to Japan was a

happy one, and we look forward to seeing many of you return to Japan on private visits. Be sure to look us up here

at CUC when you do and keep us posted on your whereabouts, achievements, and adventures!
