Introducing

LCCMLondon Centre of Contemporary Music (LCCM) is an independent higher education college for popular music. It attracts talented student musicians who intend to enter the music industry and the wider creative sector.

The college has a unique strategy for the study of music. This approach bridges the gap between traditional universities, the conservatoires of music and the rock & pop colleges by combining the best elements of all three into a modern centre for artistic and musical excellence. Our innovative method provides the best all round experience for music students.

LCCM offers an approach to the making of literate popular music that draws on the breadth of the artform’s interrelated traditions; its curriculum reflects how music continues to merge with the wider creative sector. It accepts that for good or bad, professional musicians and artists are increasingly expected to be arranger, composer, producer and micro-business.

Small classes, high contact time with tutors

We keep class sizes small and balance recruitment between instruments to ensure students get the maximum benefit from their studies. Our students are taught in a variety of ways including small classes and workshop groups. Most students also receive one to one tutorials.

Our Instrument range expands your repertoire opportunities

LCCM covers a wide breadth of music and students can expect to study a large repertoire of musical genres during their studies; from styles such as blues, gospel, soul, funk, jazz, Latin to rock, pop and folk music.

The inclusion of trumpet, trombone and saxophone within our band line-ups greatly enhances the live performance experience as well as the day to day ensemble and instrument workshops. We also pride ourselves on running numerous extra curricular workshops for students to experience a mixture of instrumental line-ups and their function within different musical genres. Workshops on offer include Jazz Improvisation, Large Ensemble (Latin / Big Band / Funk) and we even run a Drum Line.

“LCCM itself is a

wonderful environment

to study in. There is such

an encouraging vibe and

a real love for music”

Mercy Welbeck, BMus Performance & Production course

Three years at LCCM was probably the best experience of my life so far. Unlike many students, I did not have a vast musical background and there was just an enormous amount to learn. The task felt impossible at the start but the support and encouragement I received from my tutors and wonderful year group kept me going.

I was on the BMus Performance and Production course (Vocal) and within this course I learnt and improved a range of skills including composing, arranging, ear training, music theory, vocal technique, sight singing, performing and so much more. These skills enabled me to tap into my creative ideas and finally make good use of them by writing my own music. I had written songs in the past but my knowledge of music had increased so much and it was amazing to be able use all these skills to create what I could hear in my head.

LCCM itself is a wonderful environment to study in. There is such an encouraging vibe and a real love for music, which is what I think it’s all about. We would share wonderful music between us that inspired and excited us and this has really shaped the music I write now by myself and with my band. I am confident in saying that going to LCCM will be one of the best decisions you ever made! Mercy Welbeck | Class of 2015
