Bess Biamonte, Pastoral Associate As a child we were able to get two channels on the TV in the living room and, if lucky, on a small black and white on the second floor, a third. Now we have hundreds of options but I seem to gravitate to just three again. One is HGTV. If you have not seen any of the features there, some titles include

House Hunters, Flip or Flop, Fixer Upper and Property Brothers. One common theme in all of these programs is that most are first time buyers and they have a long list of things they want their way immediately. What they want and what their budget is don’t match up. The hook for these shows is to allow the hosts to present a property that on the surface seems risky to the byers, but has great hidden potential to be a real treasure.

While at our MPH Summer Social I looked around at the 700+ people and thought, what great potential is here! Much later that night I turned to channel 165 and looked at the logo and thought of our grouping and our new parish. HGTV. Help Get The Vision!

The vision of our diocese since 2015 has been to respond to the dramatic changes of our present time so

as to insure vibrant parishes and effective ministries for all the baptized. How can I help our grouping get the vision? How can you help the grouping get the vision? At first glance that’s a Herculean task, or maybe it’s not. If we ignore our part in the success then we might be a flop, but if we take ownership we won’t have to hunt around for an alternative.

Let’s look at today’s Scripture readings on this Catechetical Sunday. In the reading from Exodus, in conversation with Moses, God promises us a perpetual heritage. St. Paul in his letter to Timothy writes of the patience of Christ as an example for those who believe in him for everlasting life. Lastly the three parables in Luke’s gospel have one central theme: seeking the lost, reconciliation and forgiveness.

So how do we get the vision? First, earnest prayer. That has to be our foundation. Pray for one another. Pray for each of the current parishes. Pray for our leaders and today especially pray for those who continue to teach the faith. Second, reconcile your differences. Reconcile with your families, your neighbors and your neighboring parishes. After all, we are each others heritage, each others treasure. Thirdly, forgive as deeply and as often as our Lord does us.

That being said, come come to one of our Parish Assemblies this weekend. If we are patient and prayerful our potential will become a reality. Become part of the blueprint, to HELP GET THE VISION!

Taizé is a small village in the eastern part of France. Since 1940 it has been the home of an ecumenical community of brothers where prayer, three times a day, is the center of life. Part of that prayer time is spent in singing short repetitive refrains or ostinatos .Thousands of people from around the world visit Taizé every year. Our Taizé Services borrow from the tradition of Taizé as we offer our prayers and meditations around the cross. Our next service will be Wednesday, September 25, 2019, 7:00 pm at St. Bartholomew Church.

PARISH HAPPENINGS

Mass Schedule Changes

Earlier this year, we invited the parish communities of the MPH grouping to participate in a survey to share our reactions to the Interim Mass Schedule which we adopted last October. Many responded to this invitation and shared their opinions. Among these responses, the following trends have been noticed:

Many have emphasized that it’s important that our daily schedule evenly distributes the number of Masses among our five parishes. With that in mind, we believe that it’s reasonable to schedule three daily Masses each week at each of our five parishes.

Many have noted that it will be important to schedule the workload among our priests in such a way that is sustainable not only now (when we have four priests assigned at MPH), but also in the future (when fewer priests will be available). Along those lines, we’ve noted that it’s not possible to schedule more than three daily Masses each weekday and two on Saturday.

We’ve read these responses prayerfully and carefully, and as a result, have decided to implement the following Daily Mass schedule, effective October 7, 2019:

Monday & Friday: 9:00am, St Gerard Majella 9:30am, St Bernadette

Tuesday & Thursday: 8:00am, North American Martyrs 9:00am, St Susanna 10:00am, St Bartholomew

Wednesday: 8:00am, (NAM) St Michael 9:00am, St Gerard Majella 9:30am, St Bernadette

Saturday: 9:00am, St Susanna 10:00am, St Bartholomew

Thank you for responding to the MPH Interim Mass Schedule Survey and helping us refine our daily Mass schedule! We’ll reach out by telephone call to those who have scheduled Mass intentions for the Tuesday / Thursday 7:15am Mass for the remainder of 2019, to learn how you would like to re-schedule those intentions this year or in 2020.

MARRIAGE PLANS Marriage arrangements are to be made with a member of the clergy team at the time you are setting the

wedding date. Please contact the parish office. A Marriage Moment

Recently my cell phone died. I felt anxious about missing calls and annoyed that I would have to pay a lot of money to replace my trusty friend. When things like this happen, prayer usually leads me to put it in

perspective: "This is a first world problem." Be grateful for my husband - my main trusty friend. Besides, he also has a cell phone for back up. :-)

This year’s celebration will take place on Sunday, November 17, 2019 with Bishop Zubik, who will celebrate Mass at 2:30 PM at St. Paul Cathedral. Any couples who have celebrated or will be celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary during 2019 are asked to submit husband and wife’s name (including maiden name), date of marriage, couples mailing address, and best phone number to Kathy Tucek at the office (412.373.0050 ext. 210) no later than October 4, 2019. Participants will receive a personal invitation with instructions from diocesan offices after the parish submits the names of those who will attend. Couples are welcome to bring as many loved ones to the celebration as they wish.

PARENTING POINTERS The Prodigal Son story (Luke 15:11-32) is about self-indulgence, fraternal jealousy, and forgiveness - all

typical family dynamics. No matter the faults in your own family, remember to forgive. It doesn't mean reparation is never needed, but let forgiveness be

the foundation.

Who will we become?

Last week, we presented the nine suggestions for our new parish’s identity which our interim pastoral council developed. We introduced the five saints among these names: St Dominic, St Faustina, St Jacinta, St John Henry Newman, and St Luke the Healer. This week, we’d like to introduce the remaining for suggestions for the identity of our new parish:

In the upcoming weeks, we’ll invite you to share your preferences for the proposed names presented here. Please keep an eye on this page for more details!

This weekend, we will gather at parish assemblies to pray together and to discuss how we will become The Church Alive! in 2020 and beyond! Our schedule for parish assemblies is:

September 14, following the 4pm Mass at St Bartholomew

September 15, following the 11am Mass at North American Martyrs

Please join us at our parish assemblies! In the upcoming weeks, we’ll continue to share information presented at the assemblies, in order to give you an opportunity to continue to think and pray over the information that we discussed at these gatherings!

MPH Updates

Agnus Dei that is, “Lamb of God” – is a title for Jesus to whom we call out during Mass, as we prepare to receive the Eucharist. The title ‘Agnus Dei’ is an inspiration for our parish, reflecting our devotion to the Blessed Sacrament of the Lord.

Christ the Divine Shepherd is our Lord who is not only divine but also is the shepherd of all His people. We know we can come to Him who protects us and guides all of us.

Mother of Perpetual Help is asked to grant that we might ever invoke her powerful name, as the protector of the living and the salvation of the dying.

The Holy Family Jesus, Mary, and Joseph – have been with us to help us as a model of our own families, and as a holy connection to the Trinity and to the saints. We call on them to help our new parish to grow in holiness as a family in imitation of the Holy Family.

The students are also eating lunch, with some purchasing lunch, in the Lourdes Center dining hall. Christian meditation is conducted each day following lunch. The children look forward to this quiet time with God. A huge hit is the use of the Smart Board each day. It is used in conjunction with all the academic areas of the curriculum. At the conclusion of our first week of school the students were reading their first paper booklet containing the words that had been introduced that week. We are looking forward to a fun-filled year!

The Stitching Angels Pray for our Sick

St. Vincent DePaul Society will meet on Wednesday, September 25 at 7:00 PM in the NAM Rectory Conference Room.

Meeting

The Stitching Angels will meet on Wednesday, September 18 at 1:30 PM in the Rectory Conference Room. This will be a brief meeting. Please bring your current project, so we can spend some time chatting. Assistance will be available. Our Fall projects include chemo caps for Shady Side Cancer Centers and lap afghans/shawls for the Little Sisters of the Poor. We are out of lap afghans and shawls. If you are in need of yarn or patterns, please let me know. Comments and questions are welcome! Mary Harrill: 412-372-3181, [email protected].

The Stitching Angels would like to give an update on this year’s very successful Baby Shower for Catholic Charities Pregnancy and Par-enting. The Angels have been involved in this project for about 13 years. We begin work in April and conclude our knitting, crocheting, cross-stitch, quilting, etc. by mid-August. This year the Stitching Angels made 596 handmade baby items with a value of $6,277.00. Truly amazing! The parishes of the MPH grouping participated by contrib-uting gift cards and cash with a value of $1,116.00. These monies were used to buy needed items from Target. Target then made the deliver-ies to Catholic Charities. A special thanks to Joni O’Toole for handling this part of our endeavor. We are truly blessed to receive such a gen-erous response. Thank you so much for your continued support of this worthwhile project, as well as your support of the Stitching Angels. The Angels would also like to thank all the women from our grouping that embraced this project and contributed numerous items. If you have questions regarding the Stitching Angels, call Mary Harrill at 412-372-3181.

Pray for the Repose of Souls

Announcing the 2019… Worldwide

Public Square Rosary Crusade! America is in spiritual crisis. Secularists are trying to push GOD from the public square. They reject His beneficial action upon society. But without God, where will our leaders get the wisdom to solve the great problems we face? And there are MANY!! We must STOP the secularist advances and pray to God for help. He will hear us, if

we pray through the intercession of His Blessed Mother. That's why we are joining in the Worldwide 2019 Public Square Rosary Crusade. Come and pray the Rosary. Let’s honor the 102nd Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima's apparition, 1917-2019 Remember: There will be no peace in our lives or in society unless we honor God and obey His law.
