Your Board of Trustees has been very busy! Last week they attended the Fall General Meeting of the Public School Boards’ Association of Alberta. The PSBAA is an organization of 28 public school boards that advocates for public school education. This was a very busy couple of days and evenings attending to the important work of this association. Trustees had the opportunity to engage our MLA’s in conversation about the challenges experienced by school boards in the current educational climate. The message carried by your trustees echoed the importance of rural school programs and how there needs to be a focus on ensuring that students in all of our schools have opportunities that are available to other students in the province. Another part of the PSBAA event, Student Voice, was particularly exciting. This event provided opportunity for students to interact with other students from across the province as well as engage trustees and MLA’s in conversation and share their perspectives on educational issues. One of the highlights was the face-to-face interaction with Minister Eggen and the opportunity to share ideas! BTPS was very pleased to have four of our students as active participants. Edgerton students, Evan Fenske and Heidi Spornitz, along with their teacher, Brande Manzer, as well as Irma students, Easton Gwinn and Katelyn Jones with their teacher, David McKillop participated in Student Voice. We appreciated their enthusiasm and commitment to sharing their perspectives with all who attended. We will gather some of their impressions of this event and share them with you in an upcoming memo.

On Sunday and over the next two days, your trustees will be attending the Alberta School Boards Association Fall General Meeting. This organization is an assembly of the 61 public, separate and francophone school boards in the province. During this FGM, the ASBA membership will elect their slate of officers, discuss current issues common to all school boards and address policy positions on a variety of topics. Topics are thoroughly debated and a wide variety of perspectives contribute to the conversation. The wishes of the ASBA are forwarded to government for their consideration. Currently policy positons being tabled at this year’s FGM include:

Funding Framework Review Wrap Around Services School Zones/Playground Speed Limits High School Redesign Funding

There are also proposed emergent issues that were brought to the floor for the consideration of the assembly and decisions will be made to determine if they will be allowed. All in all, it is a very interesting event and your Board of Trustees is heavily involved in the decision making process. Typically, these are long days and require a significant amount of work for trustees in attendance.

Take care,

AROUND BTPS

GO BACK

Grade 4 CR at PPS kicked off community

by opening their box of SWAG and putting

on gorgeous new t-shirts and wristbands

that identify them as members of the Class-

room Champions Community! Thank you!

For their November visit to the Continuing

Care Center, they were very proud to ex-

plain to all who asked why they had match-

ing t-shirts and what they meant. After

splitting up to join residents at tables, stu-

dents helped them to use recycled juice

cartons to make winter bird feeders. These

handy crafts tied in nicely to their study of Waste and Our World and helping the residents and the birds

to get through winter was seen as a great way to improve our community! Hearing about how different

squirrels do not have a true hibernation and only some birds migrate from the former Conservation Of-

ficer who now lives there was a perk of our visit with seniors this week. Discussing different kinds of

seeds to attract different feathered friends over the winter was helpful. The children and residents look

forward to hanging these in their windows in the months to come to welcome the birds to the

community.
