After the Shimabara-Amakusa rebellion, the magistrate Suzuki Shigenari was

instrumental in rebuilding Amakusa. This shrine, dedicated to him, is popular with worshippers from all over Japan and many traditional ceremonies are still practiced here today.

First opened in 1845, this pottery studio is

This beautiful park is filled with many varieties of trees and flowers.

It is a great place to go for a walk or relax with the family.

Thought to be over 500 years old, this impressive plum

tree has been designated as a Prefectural Natural Treasure.

Built in 1832, this elegant stone arch bridge is 29m long, 3m wide and is

supported by 45 stone pillars arranged in nine rows. The bridge spans the Machiyamaguchi river which flows through the city center. It is designated as an Important National Cultural Property. It was the scene of a battle during the Shimabara-Amakusa rebellion.

Established by local magistrate Suzuki Shigenari in 1645, this Zen Buddhist

Temple has a large main building with an impressive roof and a stone staircase, remarkable for a Jizo (guardian deity statue) in the likeness of a foreigner.
