The central processor of a computer is also known as the CPU, or "central pro-cessing unit." This processor handles all the basic system instructions, such as processing mouse and keyboard input and running applications. Most desktop computers contain a C.P.U developed byeither Intel or AMD, which use the x86 processor architecture. Mobile devices, such as laptops and tablets may use Intel and AMD C.P.Us, but can also use specific mobile processor(s) developed by companies like Apple.

It uses a 25-pin connector (DB-25) and is rather large compared to most new interfaces. Stands for “Composite Theoretical Performance.” CTP is used to mea-sure the performance of computer processors. The values returned by CTP calculations are used for benchmarking purposes, which com-pare the performance of different processors. For example, Intel and AMD use CTP calculations to mea-sure how many millions of theoret-ical operations per second (MTOPS) their processors can perform. An Intel, which runs at 2.13 GHz, has a CTP of 7100 MTOPs, while an AMD Opteron 146, which runs at 2.0 GHz, has a CTP of 7168 MTOPS.

As seen in the example above, faster processor speeds do not always result in a higher CTP. Other considerations, such as the processor’s architecture and the speed of the frontside bus also affect the overall performance. CTP is useful for comparing dif-ferent brands of processors, as well as comparing different mod-els of processors made by the same company. With quad processors becoming more prevalent, CTP is now also being used to measure the performance increase when multiple processors are used together.

CTP also stands for “Computer to Plate.” This is a process where printing plates are made without using costly film. Instead, the images are sent directly to the plate from the computer.

eSATAStands for “External Serial Advanced Technology

Attachment.” eSATA is a variation of the SATA in-

terface that supports external storage devices.

It was standardized in 2004 and uses the same

pins and same protocols as internal SATA. Howev-

er, it provides a slightly different, more rug-

ged connector. The eSATA standard also supports

a cable length of two meters compared to the one

meter cable length supported by SATA.

Since eSATA uses the same protocols as SATA,

an eSATA drive offers the same high-speed data

transfer rates as and internal SATA drive. For

example, an eSATA 3.0 drive can transfer data at

6 Gbps or 4.8 Gbps, taking into account the data

encoding process. This is significantly fast-

er than Firewire 800 (800 Mbps) and USB 2.0 (480

Mbps) and is on par with USB 3.0 (5 Gbps).

Because eSATA offers such fast transfer rates,

it has been a popular external hard drive inter-

face used by video editors, audio producers, and

other media professionals. While eSATA is one of

the fastest interfaces available, it is surpassed

by both Thunderbolt (10 Gbps) and Thunderbolt 2.0

(20 Gbps), which are alternatives to eSATA.

Unlike Firewire, USB, and Thunderbolt, the eSA-

TA interface does not provide power to connect-

ed devices. Therefore, all drives connected via

eSATA must include a separate power connector to

provide electricity to the device. A variation

of eSATA, called eSATAp or eSATA USB Hybrid Port

(EUHP), combines four USB pins and two 12-volt

power pins into the eSATA connector. An eSATAp

port supports both eSATA and USB connectors. It

allows connected devices to draw power from the

computer’s power supply, eliminating the need for

a separate power cable.

Memory.” NVRAM is a type of RAM that re-

tains data after the host device’s power is

turned off. Two common types of NVRAM in-

clude SRAM and EEPROM.

SRAM (pronounced “s-ram”) retains data by

A Molex connector is a com-mon type of connector used to power internal computer components. The name comes from the Molex Connector Company, which pioneered the two-piece electrical connec-tors that became standard in computers and other electronics.

Since Molex makes dozens of different connectors, there is no single connector technically called a “Molex connector.” However, the term “Molex connector” has become a generic way to describe the Molex 4-pin 8981 pow-er connector used to power hard drives, optical drives, and other storage devices. It contains four pins (col-ored yellow, black, black, and red) encased in a white plastic connector. The con-nector snaps into a receptacle attached to the power supply and locks into place, ensuring a reliable connection. A Molex connector is a com-mon type of connector used to power internal computer components. The name comes from the Molex Connector Company, which pioneered the two-piece electrical connec-tors that became standard in computers and other electronics.

Since Molex makes dozens of different connectors, there is no single connector technically called a “Molex connector.” However, the term “Molex connector” has become a generic way to describe the Molex 4-pin 8981 pow-er connector used to power hard drives, optical drives, and other storage devices. It contains four pins (col-ored yellow, black, black, and red) encased in a white plastic connector. The con-nector snaps into a receptacle attached to the power supply and locks into place, ensuring a reliable connection. The 8981 connector’s simple and inexpensive design helped it become the standard power connector in desktop computers for several decades.

The PSA was one of the highlights of the episode, which, unfortunately, had several skits that fell flat. What didn’t work for us this week? How about a comedy night at Women & Women First Bookstore that forgot the funny? We love Candice and Toni, but their stand-up acts were really lame, even Toni’s half-hearted attempt at channeling a feminist version of Gallagher. There was DMV fairytale sketch that went on too long and not enough Chloë Sevigny in the episode. The Portland Milk Advisory Board skits, which have been running through each of this season’s episodes, don’t have sting or zing—who cares if they recommend cashew milk or raw cow’s milk? (The Mother’s Son deodorant commercial from earlier this season worked so much better because Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein took it a step further and pitched us a product so natural…it stinks.)

Are nerds cool? No. Not the real ones, anyway. That’s the gist of the opening public service announcement, “The More You Nerd…” on this week’s episode of Portlandia. We couldn’t help but think that that the PSA was directed at the Zooey Dechanels of the world: A hipster in a cute polka-dotted dress and oversized eyeglasses talks to a bartender about her love of comic books and video games; she self-identifies as a nerd. But the guy on the next barstool takes over the spot and teaches the television audience about the differences between a faux nerd and the real deal (which he is). He explains that real nerds have to wear the glasses to see, and that “a real nerd is ashamed to call himself a nerd.” Once again, Portlandia takes aim at pop culture and fires a direct hit. (We love you Zooey, and your adora-dorky persona, but you’re waaaay to cool to be a nerd.)
