2 HW 1: Basics

With your selected topic, clearly answer the following: • Description of the topic (what the topic is, which title

you consider appropriate for your research) • Rationale and significance (why is this topic important

to you, why is this topic worthy of a research) • Research questions (these will guide you through your

literature review, write between three to six questions) • Tentative organization (basic schedule of your research

plan, how and when are you planning working on your literature review)

• By hand on binder sheets.

• Student’s complete name and group.

• Number of homework and title.

• Complete written assignment.

• Validation, your own, and a classmate’s.

5 evidences, to be registered in before May 12th

HW 2: How to do research?

With your selected topic, clearly answer the following:

• What is the objective of your research? • What do you want to prove or disprove? • What kind of research instruments will you be needing? • How reliable are your research instruments? • Propose a schedule for each step of your research

• By hand on binder sheets.

• Student’s complete name and group.

• Number of homework and title.

• Complete written assignment.

• Validation, your own, and a classmate’s.

5 evidences, to be registered in before May 12th

HW 3: Research instruments

Design two different questionnaires that could be used as part of your research.

• Use between three to six questions per questionnaire (the questions could be the same, but the questionnaires need to be different – multiple choice, open / close questions, yes / no, etc.)

• Try to think of questions that could help you gather the information you need for your research.

• By hand on binder sheets.

• Student’s complete name and group.

• Number of homework and title.

• Complete written assignment.

• Validation, your own, and a classmate’s.

5 evidences, to be registered in before May 12th

HW 4: Analyze data

Apply your questionnaires to different people. Use the gathered information to design two different charts to present the results.

Even when you can draw your own charts, it would be easier (and most helpful) to use a graph designer software. You could try using Microsoft Excel (it is easy and functional).

• By hand on binder sheets, or printed.

• Student’s complete name and group.

• Number of homework and title.

• Complete written assignment.

• Validation, your own, and a classmate’s.

5 evidences, to be registered in before May 12th

Components of qualitative research

The following are some components of QUALITY research: Purpose, Design, Procedure, Analysis, Claim, Relevance and worth.

• Make a table with the components and your definition of each one.

Perhaps the most distinctive characteristic of research is that it is about creating new knowledge.

• To what extent do you agree with this last statement? Explain.

Notebook. Cleanliness,

completion of task.

Qualities of qualitative researchers

Read this article by Hill (2007) on the personal qualities of qualitative researchers.

• What are the qualities that she describes? • How do you see yourself in relation to these qualities? • Which ones do you feel confident with? • Which ones might you need to work on? • Describe the qualities expected of qualitative

researchers and explain your own position regarding them.

Use these questions to write a reflective essay about your

position as a qualitative researcher. Your essay

should occupy, at least, one full page. Think and organize your ideas before you start

writing. Value: 5 evidences.

Notebook. Cleanliness, completion of task.

Let’s get started

Use your topic, and these questions, to write a brief essay (one full page):

• Why are you interested in this topic? • Who else might be interested in the research and why? • Will the research involve multiple settings or a single

one? • How many participants will be involved and who will

they be? Explain your decisions. • Will the participants be interested in the research

findings? Why? • Where would you expect to share the findings of the

research with others?

Use these questions to write a reflective essay about your research proposal topic. Your

essay should occupy, at least, one full page. Think and organize your ideas before you start writing.

Value: 5 evidences.

Notebook. Cleanliness,

completion of task.

Qualitative research traditions

Research traditions is the term used to name different approaches to qualitative research: Ethnography, Grounded theory, Phenomenology, Case study, Life history, Action research, Conversation analysis.

• Students will work in collaborative teams to complete the chart about research traditions.

Notebook. Cleanliness,

completion of task.

HW 5: Literature review

As suggested in the previous slide, finding models of literature reviews can be very useful. Look for a literature review in a research paper which is about a topic similar to the one you wish to investigate. Read the literature review carefully, and make a note of your answers to the questions below.

• By hand on binder sheets.

• Student’s complete name and group.

• Number of homework and title.

Page 6: SYLLABUS Filosofía Institucional€¦ ·  · 2016-04-10... más sólidas serán sus competencias personales y profesionales a partir de las ... Academia de Humanidades ... La materia

6 Dirección de Operaciones Académicas

• What types of sources are referred to in the review? (E.g. journal articles, books, etc.)

• When was the majority of the literature written? • How has the author included information from the

sources used? • Has the author used any quotes? If so, how does the

author link them into their own writing? • How are the sources referenced in the literature

review? • What system of citation has been used?

Write a brief summary (one full page) of your findings.

• Complete written assignment.

• Validation, your own, and a classmate’s.

5 evidences, to be registered in before May 12th

HW 6: Literature review chart

Now that you have a clearer idea of the research problem you will be investigating, it is important to make sure that you are familiar with what is known about the problem already. Using the sources you gathered in the previous activities as a starting point, and bearing in mind the tips given above, take a more in-depth look into the literature about your research problem. With the information you have gathered, complete the following chart to help organize that information.

• By hand on binder sheets.

• Student’s complete name and group.

• Number of homework and title.

• Complete written assignment (at least 3 subtopics and 3 different sources, use the APA reference style).

• Validation, your own, and a classmate’s.

5 evidences, to be registered in before May 12th

HW 7: Research questions

Again, refer back to your answers to previous activities, and use them as a guide to formulate a research question, considering that you are approaching it from a qualitative perspective; that is, avoid questions which can be answered in numerical terms (e.g. What’s the average grade of my second semester students? How many people drop out from English courses at my school?). Instead, think more in terms aiming at finding out the how people experience the phenomenon under study, for example: Why do some students perform better than others? Why do people study English? What motivates my students? What do my fellow teachers think of the evaluation system at the school?

Think of a tentative title for your research project, and write down five aims of your study; that is, state briefly what you wish to accomplish.

• By hand on binder sheets.

• Student’s complete name and group.

• Number of homework and title.

• Complete written assignment (tentative title for your project, five research questions and five aims).

• Validation, your own, and a classmate’s.

5 evidences, to be registered in before May 12th

HW 8: Design issues

Write a brief essay (half a page) after reflecting on the previous questions. The following questions could aid you in writing your essay, however, these are just a starting point, you should not base your entire essay in just these questions.

• By hand on binder sheets.

• Student’s complete name and group.

• Number of homework and title.

Page 7: SYLLABUS Filosofía Institucional€¦ ·  · 2016-04-10... más sólidas serán sus competencias personales y profesionales a partir de las ... Academia de Humanidades ... La materia

• What did you learn about your project? • Is it feasible? • What changes, if any, are needed?

• Complete written assignment.

• Validation, your own, and a classmate’s.

5 evidences, to be registered in before May 12th

HW 9: Before we begin

From your own experiences and from what you read in pages 97-113 of Marshall (2006), think of advantages and disadvantages of using questionnaires, interviews, diaries and documents as methods of data collection in your particular study. Copy the following chart and complete it with your ideas. Add any other data collection methods that you can think of to the chart.

• By hand on binder sheets.

• Student’s complete name and group.

• Number of homework and title.

• Complete written assignment.

• Validation, your own, and a classmate’s.

5 evidences, to be registered in before May 12th

HW 10: Design a questionnaire

Design a short questionnaire which covers the main issues emerging from what you have learned about your research.

• Ask 10 of your classmates or friends to answer it. • Compare the response rate (how many people actually

returned it) with that of interviews. • Compare the answer to the questions with those

obtained from interviews. • What conclusions can you draw from this experience? • How suitable would questionnaires be for your research

purposes?

Write up your answers to these questions in a short reflective text (one full page) to be included in your portfolio.

• By hand on binder sheets.

• Student’s complete name and group.

• Number of homework and title.

• Complete written assignment.

• Validation, your own, and a classmate’s.

5 evidences, to be registered in before May 12th

Final project The final task of this course is to write a research proposal

for the issue you have been focusing on over the course of the semester. This will provide you with a well-defined starting point for your research.

In your proposal you should explain why you chose your research topic, making your research question and objectives clear, provide a brief summary and analysis of existing literature and describe and explain the methodology you intend to use. You should also include a timetable of activities, indicating when you will carry out each step of your research.

See rubric.

Objectives Consider the objectives you originally wrote in your second

partial portfolio. Are they still relevant? Are they clear and concise? Rewrite them according to the previous suggestions.

Notebook. Cleanliness,

completion of task.

Rationale What is the context of your research? What is known about

the field already? Why is your study worthwhile doing? Write a rationale section that could be included in the introduction of your paper.

Notebook. Cleanliness,

completion of task.

Literature review: file cards

The literature review plays a crucial role in a research paper, as it provides the framework upon which the research is built. For a thesis, the literature review should make reference to around 10 reliable and authoritative sources.

In order to keep track of the information you gather from your sources, it is important to keep an organized record of what you read. One strategy that can be very useful for this is the making of File Cards, such as the one in the example below.

As you read, take notes using the File Card as a guide. Make a separate File Card for each of your sources.

Note: The making of File Cards is a constant process. Every time you read a new source, remember to make a File Card to record the information that is relevant to your research.

Notebook. Cleanliness,

completion of task.

At least three different file cards must be completed.

Page 9: SYLLABUS Filosofía Institucional€¦ ·  · 2016-04-10... más sólidas serán sus competencias personales y profesionales a partir de las ... Academia de Humanidades ... La materia

9 Dirección de Operaciones Académicas

Literature review: organization

Just as we used a table in the previous activity, visual organizers can also be useful for organizing the content of your literature review. Use the table below to visualize the links between the sources you have read and to record the relationship between each point and your research work.

Notebook. Cleanliness,

completion of task.

Rewrite your literature review taking into

consideration everything you have read and done so far.

Methodological Paradigms

Write a brief introduction to your methodology chapter (approximately 200-300 words), stating your research objectives and/or questions and the approach that you will use to meet those objectives. You should justify your choice of approach.

Notebook. Cleanliness,

completion of task.

Sampling in qualitative research

Now that we have clearly defined what is meant by setting, subjects and samples, it is time to write a brief section for your paper which describes these. You have probably already mentioned them in passing in your introduction: now it is time to describe them in more detail. Remember to bear in mind what is important for the reader to know

Notebook. Cleanliness,

completion of task.

Methodology: context and participants

Now is the time to consider your research context and participants. How did you choose them? Why are they appropriate for your research? What measures can be taken to ensure that your participants are treated ethically?

Write two brief sections for your methodology chapter, one detailing the research context and the other describing the research participants. Remember to mention any ethical considerations which will be/have been taken into account.

Notebook. Cleanliness,

completion of task.

Methodology: Procedures

You have already written about your research approach and the instruments you are using for your research, but the most important part of the methodology chapter still has to be written: the procedure.

The procedure, as its name suggests, is the section of your methodology chapter where you explain how your data collection was done. I like to think of it as the story of the research. You need to go into detail, explaining step-by-step what you did to collect your data, what instruments you used at what stages, and why. Note that by data collection, I mean the data collected in your research context (the field), not what you have read in the literature.

Notebook. Cleanliness,

completion of task.
