Mitigation of the Covid-19 Pandemic - PTBA Choose Efficiency

and Expand the Export Market By: Ahmad Nabhani

CONSIDERING the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the mining industry, PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) has adjusted its sales and production targets. "The decline in demand for coal in several export countries as a result of the lockdown prompted the company to adjust its production and sales targets. However, the domestic market is still absorbed by PLN," said PTBA Finance Director Mega Satria in a virtual public expose in Jakarta, yesterday.

He conveyed, in order to maintain business continuity and also mitigate the corona pandemic, efficiency in all lines, be it production, capital expenditure to operations, is an option that the company must make. In addition, the company is also opening new export markets to Australia, Vietnam and Brunei Darussalam.

Meanwhile, regarding long-standing export markets such as China and India which currently import the majority of Indonesian coal commodities, the company will still monitor developments in these countries. "We are making efforts to enter the new market to Australian, Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam," said Mega Satria.

For information, amid the decline in new coal prices, PTBA recorded a growth in export sales in the second quarter of 2020 compared to the previous quarter. So, for exports until June 2020 it reaches 5.2 million tons. PTBA's coal exports reached 41.4% of total sales which reached 12.5 million tonnes by June 2020. Meanwhile,...

Mitigasi Pandemi Covid-19 - PTBA Pilih Efisiensi dan Perluas

    Pasar Ekspor Oleh: Ahmad Nabhani

Sementara,...

Meanwhile, domestic coal sales are still the company's priority with a share of 58.6% or around 7.3 million tonnes.

From the production side, PTBA is able to produce 11.9 million tons by June 2020 accompanied by the performance of coal transportation which also shows a positive performance. During the first semester of this year, coal transportation capacity was recorded at 11.7 million tons and this year the company lowered its coal production target from 30 million tons to 25.1 million tons. The same thing applies to sales, to 24.9 million tons.

The company's maintained operational performance until the first semester of 2020 is none other than the result of the continuous application of operational excellence and market expansion which is the company's strategy in running its business this year. The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic entering the second quarter has indeed affected company performance. Especially in the face of price volatility and weakening demand for coal supplies due to this pandemic.

PTBA ensures that mining operations are still running in a disciplined manner following the health protocols set by the government, and continue to actively participate in fighting the Covid -19 outbreak that is currently hitting this country.

Until July 2020, PTBA was recorded to have disbursed donations of more than Rp. 14.59 billion consisting of medical equipment assistance, direct assistance to the community and community, facilities and infrastructure to support health protocols, socialization of prevention of the spread of Covid-19, and others.

Sales of heavy equipment and coal rose, this is the performance of United Tractors (UNTR) in July

Reporter: Akhmad Suryahadi | Editor: Wahyu T. Rahmawati

A NUMBER of business lines of PT United Tractors Tbk (UNTR) have begun to show improvement. Launching the UNTR monthly report, the heavy equipment sales business line and coal sales increased in July 2020. In fact, this increase has started since May 2020.

Sales of Komatsu heavy equipment in the July 2020 period reached 85 units, up from sales in June 2020 of 76 units and in May 2020, which was only 60 units. It's just that, if accumulated, Komatsu sales during the first seven months of 2020 only reached 938 units, down 55.8% from the realization in the same period the previous year which reached 2,122 units.

The market share of Komatsu in the national market reached 32% of the total demand for heavy equipment as of July 2020.

Another business l ine that has also increased is the coal sales segment run by PT Tuah Turangga Agung (TTA). In the July 2020 period, TTA coal sales reached 691,000 tons, consisting of 596,000 tons of thermal coal and 95,000 tons of coking coal. Coal sales in July 2020 increased from sales in June 2020 at 573,000 tonnes and in the May 2020 period which was only 514,000 tonnes.

United Tractors Corporate Secretary Sara K. Loebis said that the increase in UNTR's coal sales in May-July 2020 was due to a carry-over from the previous month when there was still a lockdown to export destination countries. In addition, Sara said,...

    Wahyu T. Rahmawati

SEJUMLAH lini bisnis PT United Tractors Tbk (UNTR) mulai menunjukkan perbaikan.

  • IMA-Daily Update Page 6

In addition, Sara said, coal sales in the first semester were indeed pushed up to 60-70 percent of the set target.

"This is to anticipate the dry season in the second semester because river water levels usually recede and hamper the logistics of transporting coal through the river," said Sara to Kontan.co.id, Monday (31/8).

If accumulated, TTA's coal sales volume for the first seven months of 2020 reached 6.32 million tons, up 11.32% year-on-year. Until the end of the year, the business entity PT Astra International Tbk (ASII) is targeting to sell 7.9 million tons-8 million tons of coal, including 1.2 million tons of coking coal (coke). Thus, the achievement of UNTR's coal sales until July 2020 has reached 79% of the installed target.

Meanwhile, the gold mining business line through PT Agincourt Resources has decreased since May 2020. Gold sales in the July 2020 period only reached 26,000 ounces, down from sales in June 2020 which reached 32,000 ounces and 40,000 ounces in May 2020.

If accumulated, gold sales until July 2020 reached 211,600 ounces or decreased 8.1% on an annual basis. Sara said, one of the causes of the decline in gold sales was during the large-scale social restrictions (PSBB), the workforce on duty was only 50% of normal and many of the workforce at the Martabe Mine came from the local community.

However, at this time, Sara said the number of workers had gradually increased because there was a period of isolation that had to be taken. Until the end of the year, this resident of the Kompas100 Index targets gold sales at 255,000 ounces-300,000 ounces.

Jika diakumulasikan, volume penjualan batubara TTA selama tujuh bulan pertama 2020 mencapai 6,32 juta ton, naik 11,32% secara year-on-year.

Triggered by the Correction of Coal Prices, Bumi's Revenue

    Becomes US$1.97 Billion Parluhutan Situmorang

PT BUMI Resources Tbk (BUMI) posted revenues of US$ 1.97 billion during the first semester of 2020, down 13% from the same period last year of US$ 2.27 billion. The weakening was triggered by a decrease in the average selling price of coal.

The average selling price of the company's coal fell by 12 percent from US$ 53.2 per ton to US$ 46.9 per ton, which resulted in a decrease in the company's revenue. Meanwhile, the company's sales volume is still stable at the level of 41.2 million tons, which comes from the KPC mine reaching 29.5 million tons and Arutmin Indonesia at 11.6 million tons.

"The company can stil l maintain the company's operational performance, even though the coal sector is not yet conducive in the midst of the ongoing Covid19 pandemic," wrote Bumi Resources Director and Corporate Secretary Dileep Srivastava in a release received by Investor Daily in Jakarta, Monday (31/8).

The decline in revenue contributed to a 55 percent decline in operating profit to 132.7 million, compared to the same period last year of US$ 298.22 million. This decrease caused the company to have a net loss of US$ 52.7 million in the first half of 2020, compared to US$ 137.54 million in the same period last year.

"Although market uncertainty continues to hit the coal business in the short term, the company is confident that in the future this industry will continue to grow, especially with the development of coal downstream projects in the medium term," he said.

Dipicu Koreksi Harga Batu Bara, Pendapatan Bumi Menjadi

    US$1,97 Miliar Parluhutan Situmorang

PT BUMI Resources Tbk (BUMI) membuku-kan pendapatan senilai US$ 1,97 miliar sepanjang semester I-2020, turun sebanyak 13% dari pencapaian periode sama tahun lalu US$ 2,27 miliar. Pelemahan tersebut dipicu penurunan rata-rata harga jual batu bara.

Rata-rata harga jual batu bara perseroan turun sebanyak 12% dari US$ 53,2 pert on menjadi US$ 46,9 per ton yang berimbas terhadap penurunan pendapatan perseroan. Sedangkan volume penjualan perseroan masih stabil di level 41,2 juta ton, yaitu berasal dari tambang KPC mencapai 29,5 juta ton dan Arutmin Indonesia sebanyak 11,6 juta ton.

“Perseroan masih bisa menjaga kinerja operasional perseroan, meskipun sektor batu bara belum kondusif di tengah berlanjutnya pandemi Covid19,” tulis Director and Corporate Secretary Bumi Resources Dileep Srivastava dalam rilisnya yang diterima Investor Daily di Jakarta, Senin (31/8).

Penurunan pendapatan tersebut bermbas terhadap pelemahan laba usaha sebesar 55% menjadi 132,7 juta, dibandingkan periode sama tahun lalu senilai US$ 298,22 juta. Penurunan tersebut membuat perseroan rugi bersih senilai US$ 52,7 juta pada semester I-2020, dibandingkan laba bersih periode sama tahun lalu US$ 137,54 juta.

Bumi Resources is targeting coal production to reach 85-89 million tons this year with an estimated average selling price of US$ 4649 per ton. Meanwhile, production costs are estimated to fall to a level of US$ 32-34 per ton this year.

The company management added that Bumi Resources was waiting for official confirmation from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources regarding the conversion of the extension of Arutmi Indonesia's business license from PKP2B to a special mining business permit (IUPK). Editor: Parluhutan ([email protected])

Bumi Resources membidik produksi batu bara mencapai 85-89 juta ton tahun ini dengan perkiraan rata-rata harga jual US$ 4649 per ton. Sedangkan beban produksi diperkirakan turun ke level US$ 32-34 per ton sepanjang tahun ini.

Manajemen perseroan menambahkan Bumi Resources sedang menunggu konfir-masi resmi dari Kementerian Energi dan Sumber Daya Mineral terkait konversi perpanjangan izin usaha Arutmi Indonesia dari PKP2B menjadi izin usaha pertam-bangan khusus (IUPK). Editor : Parluhutan ([email protected])

Tin Price Trend Improves - TINS Expects Second Half

    Improvement By: Ahmad Nabhani

THE IMPROVEMENT in commodity prices on world markets in the second half of this year is a big hope for PT Timah Tbk (TINS)

to reverse its financial performance better than in the first half of 2020. Just so you know, the company recorded a net loss in the second quarter of Rp 390.07. billion or down from the first quarter position of

    Rp412.86 billion.

Director of Finance of PT Timah Tbk (TINS), Wibisono believes that in the second half of this year the price of tin metal will improve and help the recovery of the world tin market. "We are optimistic that refined tin prices will recover in the second half of 2020. This will have a positive impact on company performance," he said during a virtual live 2020 public expose in Jakarta, yesterday.

Tren Harga Timah Membaik - TINS Menaruh Asa Perbaikan

    Paruh Kedua Oleh: Ahmad Nabhani

posisi kuartal I sebesar Rp412,86 miliar.

  • IMA-Daily Update Page 9

Refined tin prices on the London Metal Exchange (LME) have gradually improved with an average price in June 2020 of 17.12 US dollars, up 9 percent compared to the previous month. This positive signal has raised optimism that the world tin market will recover after being hit for a while due to Covid-19.

As the world's largest tin producer, the company is one of the most popular brands in the tin industry with a registered trademark on the London Metal Exchange. According to Wibisono, this is a competitive advantage for TINS in realizing its penetration strategy into new markets. In the first semester of 2020, PT Timah recorded tin ore production of 24,990 tonnes, down 47.3% compared to the same period last year of 47,423 tonnes. Metal production fell 26.2% to 27,833 tonnes and metal sales fell 0.3% to 31,508 tonnes.

When viewed from the perspective of the second quarter compared to the first quarter, the visible improvements include the Gross Profit Margin (GPM) which rose to approximately 3.1% from minus 4% previously. In the second quarter, a gross profit of Rp249.94 billion was recorded, a significant increase from the first quarter of minus Rp173.6 billion. In addition, Net Profit Margin (NPM) rose to minus 4.9% from minus 9.4% previously.

Operationally PT Timah continues to carry out action plans in the form of efficiency in each business line, optimization of production equipment, and maintaining production and sales performance so that cash flow remains optimal. In addition, raw material costs which have a major contribution to the cost structure are circumvented through third party renegotiation for more economical compensation.

PT Timah also utilizes a backlog or semi-finished tin inventory to be melted back into refined tin with LME standard specifi-cations, thus contributing positively to the company's revenue.

  • IMA-Daily Update Page 10

"The effectiveness of current cost management will begin to appear in the financial reports of the following quarters," said Wibisono.

Thus, continued Wibisono, the potential for improvement in PT Timah's performance is still wide open, coupled with the recovery in tin prices on the London Metal Exchange (LME), will further strengthen optimism and good hopes for PT Timah in the second half of 2020.

THE PLANTATION and Animal Husbandry Service (Disbunnak) of South Kalimantan conducted a survey of PT Arutmin's former mining site in Kintap. The observation is carried out to see firsthand the location that will be used as land for developing beef cattle. The use of ex-mining land for cattle slaughtering

areas is part of the local government's steps to accelerate the cattle self -sufficiency program in the region.

By utilizing ex-mining land, Disbunnak is working on various ways so that the cattle self-sufficiency program can be completed more quickly. So far, the majority of land used for slaughtering cattle is plantation and agricultural land. The use of ex-mining land has become a new strategy taken by the government.

Tambang untuk Ternak Sapi Penulis : Edo Fernando, Editor : Faris

    Primayudha

Disbunnak assessed that the post-mining land reclamation carried out by PT Arutmin since 2015 has great potential for cattle development. Both in terms of land area and also from natural resources that can be used as animal feed.

Achieving cattle self-sufficiency will not only supply the needs of South Kalimantan, but also neighboring regions. For infor-mation, the cattle population in South Kalimantan has reached 181,547 heads.

PT Arutmin itself has provided post-mining guarantees in 2018 amounting to USD 1.5 million for the Kintap mine. Total guarantees paid for coal mines owned by companies in Kalimantan alone amounted to USD53.17 million.

Based on reports in 2019, the total post-mining land which is the obligation of PT Arutmin to carry out reclamation covers an area of 15,000 hectares. Based on the report, the amount of land that has been reclaimed is 7,100 hectares.

Meanwhile, the area of post-mining land that has been cooperated with the local government to be used as a cattle develop-ment area reaches 200 hectares.

    hanya menyuplai kebutuhan wilayah Kaliman-

Underground Mining for Efficiency and Safety

    Dero Iqbal Mahendra | Economy

AFTER the end of the open pit mining period at the end of last year, PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) is now entering a new chapter with the underground mining method. This method is much more complex and carries a higher risk than before if it is not managed properly.

  • IMA-Daily Update Page 12

However, PTFI believes they are capable of operating underground mining with the support of qualified human resources (HR) and modern technology.

The decision to change the mining method was taken not because of the depleted mineral reserves, but more because of safety and efficiency in mining.

"So it is not because the reserves are lost, but the mining operations we have opened are too large and deep, so that it is no longer efficient and increases insecurity at work due to being too narrow," explained PTFI Mining Engineering Head, Zulkifli Lambali at the event at The Nation at Metro Tv.

Zulkifli said that the decision to use the underground excavation method was not without side effects. One of the things seen is the reduction in PTFI's production rate during the transition period from the previous 200 thousand tons per day during open pit mining.

He also explained that PTFI currently has four underground mines which are already in operation. The first is the DOZ mine which has been operating for a long time, the DMLZ Mine, Big Gossan and the Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) which are mines under the Grasberg open pit.

On the other hand, underground mining also presents new challenges for miners. For example, landslides, poisonous gases and earthquakes are a serious threat if done carelessly.

"You can imagine that suddenly we took the ore and then wet mud came out up to 100 meters and closed the tunnel, if we were not careful and people could not be buried properly," explained Zulkifli.

To mitigate risk, PTFI uses a variety of advanced technologies. For example,...

Misalnya,...

  • IMA-Daily Update Page 13

For example, for an earthquake, PTFI installed a seismic vibration monitoring system, which if it exceeds a tracehold of 1.3 magnitude, there will be an order to evacuate workers.

Another thing is the importance of water management in the mine. Zulkifli also said that water in an underground mine is like a friend as well as an opponent if it is not properly controlled. He gave an example, if a lot of water is found in the crevices of the rock, and sometimes there is so much water, it needs special handling.

This is because the mining area will be filled with dangerous mud. Water currents that are too large can cause flooding and can block tunnels that are not large in size.

Even so, Zulkifli emphasized that water is also one of the main needs in processing ore (ore mined) in mining. For example, for activities in a mill (processing plant) that require very large amounts of water, so that all water in the mine cannot be discharged, but instead flowed to other locations such as mills.

    Latest technology

PTFI has also used the latest technology to reduce work risks. For example, for underground mining in GBC, which is the most modern mine at present, it no longer uses trucks to transport ore to a gyratory crusher (crushing place) to shrink the size of the ore. However, PTFI uses unmanned electric trains that are remotely controlled by the operator outside the underground mining area.

This system is called a loader system with remote control and autonomus divice which moves in loops of about 27 km. The autonomous divice system is used in DOZ, GBC and DMLZ mines, one of which is to avoid the danger of wet mud.

  • IMA-Daily Update Page 14

PTFI DOZ Production Supervisor, Parningotan Siburian, explained that in the flow of the first material conveying system, the loader remote controls the dredger as usual. With a length of up to 12 meters, the four-wheeler has a bucket at the end. "This loader will dredge the mining material that we collapse from above and then transport the mining material to the next stage," explained Parningotan.

In operation it is controlled by several series of communication lines such as optical fiber which is connected to the underground. The system itself will communicate with a wifi signal like the one at home to order forward or backward.

Regarding the use of technology in mining, PTFI Head of Operational Maintenance, Carl Tauran, said that his party has learned a lot from the DOZ mine. Therefore, later the DMLZ mine will be like the DOZ but with a larger production volume.

For example, for DOZ the production target is around 20,000 tons, while in DMLZ it will be 80,000 tons and in wet form. Likewise for the GBC mine whose production will be 130,000 in the wet form. To support this, the use of autonomous technology is central.

Carl also explained that in order to minimize disruption to engine and operational vehicle damage, he created a work system for sorting all mining equipment. He said that each mine has its own workshop.

For example, the DOZ mine has three workshops and at the Big Gossam mine there is one workshop, and at DMLZ two workshops, and at the GBC mine two workshops. In addition, outside the underground mining area, his party has Tera and Mega Taswa facilities to support all activities in the underground mine.

    Work accident management

With the use of a remote control system, it can be ascertained that work accidents during mining can be avoided or minimized. It is proven that the number of work accidents is decreasing from year to year.

"Statistically, our accidents in the last 2-3 years have a downward trend. If we look at it we cannot depend on statistical things. But we also see how we manage our critical work so that we can eliminate accidents that result in death in the workplace,” explained Henky Rumbino, Head of Health and Safety at PTFI.

Henky also explained that if a work accident occurs, according to government regulations, his party has the principle to stop work first. Subsequently, a report is made to the mine inspector and a decision will be made whether to continue the work after taking the necessary data for the investigation process.

In terms of human resources (HR), Carl revealed that the engineering division that he manages is 100% from Indonesia, including Papuans and from other parts of Indonesia.

Meanwhile, foreign workers have more roles as troubleshooters who directly handle problems. From this working model, Indonesian engineers can learn directly from foreign workers based on problems in the field.

He also said that human resource development requires process and time. However, as far as the journey has been, with good production these things are not a problem.

"For me, the challenge is how we can embrace everything with our respective strengths and weaknesses so that they become a team," said Carl.

    Manajemen kecelakaan kerja

  • IMA-Daily Update Page 16

Regarding human resource development, PTFI employees have big dreams for the future. As expressed by Zulkifli, who hoped that PTFI would produce quality human resources capable of making Indonesia independent in the mining sector.

"PTFI can produce people who have sufficient skills and sufficient experience so that they can become Indonesians who

build their own mines and do not depend on skills or external goods," explained Zulkifli. (Dro/S1-25)

(Dro/S1-25)

PENJUALAN alat berat Komatsu PT United Tractors Tbk (UNTR) mulai menunjukkan peningkatan.

Meanwhile, gold sales through the Martabe Mine until July 2020 reached 211,600 ounces or corrected 8.1% year-on-year. One of the causes of this decline in realization was restrictions on the operational workforce.

Head of Research for Mirae Asset Sekuritas Indonesia Hariyanto Wijaya assessed that the level of operational achievement of UNTR has so far been slightly better than the annual target set by Mirae Asset. According to Hariyanto, the realization of Komatsu sales, coal sales, and gold mining had reached 64.1%, 70.2% and 66.4% respectively, of Mirae Asset's expectations and were above the set expectations.

Hariyanto estimates that the limitation on the number of workers will likely remain in effect until the end of this year, so that the trend in operational output will remain weak throughout this semester.

However, Hariyanto estimates that the gold business segment will drive UNTR's net profit growth next year, one of which is the profitable trend of gold prices. In addition, there is a potential for recovery in UNTR's gold production next year.

This is in accordance with UNTR guidelines which estimate that next year's gold production will recover to a level of 350,000 ounces (compared to this year's target of only 255,000 ounces-300,000 ounces).

Mirae Asset Sekuritas also recommended a trading buy for UNTR's shares with a target price of Rp 26,000 per share. This recommendation was taken...

This recommendation was taken consi-dering that there is still room for increases in share prices, which is driven by the prospect of a favorable gold price in 2021.

At the close of trading today, Monday (31/8), UNTR's share price was closed at the level of Rp 23,000 per share after falling 1.81%.

Barrick's attributed gold mineral reserves increased by about 15% following depletion from mining, reflecting the merger of Randgold Resources, the formation of the Nevada Gold Mine joint venture with Newmont, the release of the Kalgoorlie mine and exploration success.

    3. Polyus PJSC

The third largest reserve of Polyus ore in the world is estimated at 61 million ounces of gold, down 4.7% from 64 million ounces at 31 December 2018. The change in estimate from 2018 to 2019 is due to depletion by mining and changes in stockpile inventories due to additions from mining and reclamation for processing.

    4. Newcrest Mining

Newcrest is fourth with 52 Moz gold reserves reported in 2019. Reserves fell by 3.7% due to an estimated depletion of mining of around 3 million ounces of gold, offset by small additions to site operations.

    5. Gold Fields

Gold Fields is in fifth place with 49.3 Moz of gold reserves. The 2.5% increase in net reserves was mainly driven by Asanko's first reporting, with strong contributions from expansion to existing mines and new mining positions at Agnew, St Ives and Tarkwa.

    6. AngloGold Ashanti

AngloGold ore reserves decreased from 44.1 Moz in December 2018 to 43.9 Moz in December 2019. Annual gross decline of 0.2 Moz includes a 3.7 Moz depletion. The increase before the depletion was 3.5 Moz, due to the addition of 3.6 Moz due to changes in exploration and modeling, changes in economic assumptions of 0.4 Moz and changes in ownership of 0.1 Moz. Another factor resulted in a 0.6 Moz drop.

Cadangan mineral emas yang diatribusikan Barrick meningkat sekitar 15% setelah penipisan dari penambangan, mencerminkan penggabungan Randgold Resources, pem-bentukan usaha patungan Tambang Emas Nevada dengan Newmont, pelepasan Kalgoorlie tambang dan eksplorasi sukses.

    3. Polyus PJSC

Penurunan kotor tahunan sebesar 0,2 Moz termasuk penipisan 3,7 Moz. Rampage! Coal Price Raced 4.2% After Long Depression

    Tirta Citradi, CNBC Indonesia

COAL prices went berserk and shot up sharply in trading last Monday (31/8/ 2020), after plunging below US$ 50/ton and touching the lowest level in the last 4 years.

At the close of trading Monday (31/8/ 2020), the price of Newcastle thermal coal for contracts that are actively traded rose significantly to US$ 52.75/ton, up 4.25% from the position of the closing trade last weekend.

Even though it has shot up significantly, coal prices are still in the correction zone throughout this year. The prospect of coal in the future is still overshadowed by various bad news. The latest unfortunate news now comes from the United Nations.

The United Nations says India needs to work progressively to stop using coal to generate electricity by accelerating its transition to more environmentally friendly renewables.

The global agency wants the South Asian country to be a pioneer in promoting clean energy, especially because the Covid-19 pandemic is jeopardizing sustainable development. This was said directly by the UN secretary general António Guterres on August 28, citing Argus Media.

The pandemic has undermined India's plans to rapidly expand its renewable fleet as construction activity slows down due to

labor shortages and supply chain issues.

Ngamuk! Harga Batu Bara Melesat 4,2% Usai Tertekan

    Lama Tirta Citradi, CNBC Indonesia

  • IMA-Daily Update Page 23

At the same time, however, Delhi is not backing down from major reform plans to allow the private sector to enter commercial coal mining to help increase domestic production and cut imports.

In the release of its latest report entitled Global Energy Review 2020, the inter-national energy agency (IEA) estimates that global coal demand is projected to fall

by 8% compared to 2019. This is the sharpest decline since World War II (WWII).

The IEA estimates that China's coal demand as its biggest consumer this year will drop by 5%. Other countries will also experience a decline in demand for coal, such as India, which is the second largest consumer after China.

The slowdown in global economic activity

coupled with high abundance and cheap gas prices has prompted many countries to switch from coal to gas.

The Covid-19 pandemic has also been used as a momentum to boost the market share of other energy sources that are more environmentally friendly. This is mostly done in countries, especially Europe.

Elsewhere in the world, demand for coal will decline sharply in 2020. Even in

Southeast Asia, the fastest growing region in recent years, where coal-fired power generation has been constrained by lower electricity demand, particularly in Malaysia and Thailand.

"We also expect a significant reduction in coal demand in developed countries: by 25% in the United States, about 20% in the European Union, and 5% to 10% in Korea and Japan," wrote the IEA in its report. RESEARCH TEAM CNBC INDONESIA (twg/twg)

TIM RISET CNBC INDONESIA (twg/twg)

Copper price leaps 26-month high on strong Chinese rebound Frik Els

COPPER easily cleared the pivotal $3 a pound level on Monday as the recovery in the Chinese economy, the world’s top consumer of the metal, gains momentum.

Copper for delivery in December trading on the Comex market in New York changed hands for $3.065 a pound ($6,757 a tonne) in early afternoon trade, the highest since June 2018. Monday’s move brings gains for 2020 to 10% and a mouthwatering 58% since the covid-19 lows struck in March.

“Prices still have the potential to increase, but in the short-term they will be floating around,” analyst He Tianyu of CRU Group told Reuters, expecting a price rally from mid-September at the earliest, when the traditionally strong copper season kicks in.

    Parallels to GFC

Jonathan Barnes of Roskill said in a recent report the copper price will likely rise further towards the end of 2020, and that the current environment has strong parallels to the rebound in the copper price after the global financial crisis, thanks to massive stimulus efforts by Beijing.

On the Shanghai Futures Exchange, the bellwether metal racked up its fifth straight month of gains in August, which is the longest winning streak since 2009.

Copper hit a low of $1.32 a pound in January 2009, then surged to $3.55 by April of the next year on its way to an all-time peak just shy of $4.58 (more than $10,000 per tonne) in February 2011.

Roskill believes that while the effects of covid-19 could decrease world consumption of the metal by 3%–4% this year, the drop in mine output and scrap flows has been greater.

    Economic rebound

A key gauge of Chinese economic activity released on Monday showed continuing expansion of the country’s manufacturing and services sector in August.

While the official manufacturing PMI index declined slightly to 51.0 (a reading above 50 means expansionary conditions) on the back of flooding in the manufacturing centres in southwest China, the services sector leaped to 55.2 – a 31-month high.

The construction index stayed above 60 on the back of Beijing’s stimulus programs, despite which lifted the composite to 54.5 – a two-year high.

Capital Economics says in a note, “it’s not too surprising that the manufacturing PMI has started to level off since growth in industry has already returned to its pre-virus level.”:

But with fiscal support on course to be stepped up in the coming months, we still think there is some further upside to industrial activity. Meanwhile, it’s encouraging that the recovery is broadening out, with service sector activity now playing catch-up with industry.

This is consistent with our view that an investment-led rebound would eventually also shore up consumer sentiment and household spending, keeping the overall economic recovery on track.

Freeport’s Adkerson elected ICMM chair By: Creamer Media Reporter

RICHARD Adkerson, president, CEO and vice-chairperson of US-based miner Freeport McMoRan, has been elected chairperson of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM).

Adkerson has been a member of the ICMM since 2005 and served as chairperson from 2008 to 2011.

He also led Freeport-McMoRan’s participation in the recent development of the new global industry standard on tailings management.

“This is an especially important time as the industry responds to the unprecedented Covid-19 health crisis and the growing focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance by stakeholders in the global metals and mining industry,” said Adkerson.

ICMM is governed by the CEOs of its 27 company members, with officers appointed from within this group for a two-year term.

Australia leaps on mineral exploration Salomae Haselgrove

AUSTRALIA’s mineral exploration expenditure has risen by 11.9 per cent as Victoria achieved a record June quarter of investment.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reported that total mineral exploration expenditure in Australia reached $683.3 million during the June quarter.

This included a 17.5 per cent rise in expenditure on exploration projects to $67.5 million and a 2.4 per cent rise in expenditure on new deposits to $5.3 million.

The ABS expects short term exploration to be “significantly affected” due to changes to regular patterns as exploration companies work through the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, the pandemic did not stop Victoria from having a record quarter for investment in mineral exploration, spending $39.7 million on exploration activities during the June quarter.

This brought Victoria’s total exploration investment for the 2019-20 financial year to $136.5 million, the fourth highest state behind Western Australia, Queensland and New South Wales.

Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) executive director James Sorahan said the record month reinforced mining’s outstanding contribution to growing jobs in regional Victoria.

With steady exploration happening in Victoria, the state is aiming to have multiple new gold, base metals and mineral sands mines by the end of the decade.

“Victoria’s rich mineral endowment makes it highly prospective for gold, base metals including copper and mineral sands discoveries,” Sorahan said.

“While Victoria’s minerals industry is associated with the gold rush, there is much more to Victorian mining.

“It is a big part of many regional communities and modern, innovative industry which creates job opportunities for geologists, geophysicists, field samplers, drillers, laboratory personnel and geoscientists across the state.

“Exploration spending also adds to the knowledge of Victoria’s geology and is critical to a pipeline of new mines in the future.”

MCA chief executive Tania Constable also commented on the ABS’ results, stating that attracting new exploration investment to Australia’s post-COVID economic recovery is “essential”.

With an 18 per cent increase in spending on mineral exploration in 2019-20 compared with the previous year, Constable said this showed the mining industry’s growing investment and regional jobs for long-term prosperity.

“The MCA is proud to have led Australia’s minerals industry from the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in helping to keep workers, families and local communities safe,” Constable said.

“This has ensured that the Australian minerals industry, including exploration has continued to operate throughout the global COVID-19 pandemic to support jobs, communities and economic recovery while contributing company tax royalties to help fund doctors, nurses, police and hospitals.”

Chile's Codelco presses ahead with automation plans to bolster copper production

    Fabian Cambero

CHILE’s state-owned Codelco, the world’s largest copper producer, will press ahead with plans to roll out automation of its mining operations as it seeks to maintain production levels into the future amid declining ore grades and the disruption of the coronavirus pandemic, its chief executive said on Friday.

The progress of Codelco’s digitalization agenda has strained relations with the unions because of the potential for technological advances reducing the need for manual labour.

    https://www.reuters.com/journalists/fabian-cambero

  • IMA-Daily Update Page 27

Technological development is however critical to ensuring the longer-term viability of mining, Codelco CEO Octavio Araneda said in a seminar hosted in the capital Santiago.

Copper miners are struggling globally with the ongoing disruption of the coronavirus pandemic, while in Chile they are also facing a combination of declining ore grades and costly overhauls of ageing mines.

“We are committed to a programme of introducing autonomous trucks in the pits. That’s a potent and challenging goal in terms of automation,” he said.

“That’s the big step still remaining to take, our are plants are already pretty automated.”

Codelco, which delivers all its profits to the state, increased production by 4.7% in the first half of the year even as it reduced staffing and adjusted shift systems to slow the spread of the virus in its operations.

But as Chile reached its peak of infections in July and the virus spread to its northern desert cities, Codelco’s unions reported around 3,000 cases and a handful of deaths, it was forced to stall development projects and smelters.

Araneda celebrated Codelco’s managing to reduce levels of the coronavirus among workers to an average of seven daily cases per day in a mass of 70,000 people, more than half of whom are asymptomatic.

Araneda said the company was prepared for a second wave.

“It is very likely that increases in the number of infections will happen in the country and the regions where we operate,” he said.

Chile this week surpassed 400,000 infections and more than 11,000 deaths from COVID-19 though with a drop in daily infection and positivity rates, it has begun a cautious lifting of lockdowns and resumption of business activity in the capital and around the country. India’s target to gasify 100 MT coal to entail investment of over Rs 4 lakh crore: Joshi

    By: PTI

INDIA’s target to gasify 100 million tonnes of coal by 2030 will entail an investment of over Rs 4 lakh crore, Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi said on Monday.

Coal gasification is the process of producing syngas -- a mixture consisting mainly of carbon monoxide, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, natural gas and water vapour -- from coal.

“Coal gasification and liquefaction is no more an aspiration, but a requirement. For encouraging use of clean sources of fuel, government has provided for a concession of 20 per cent on revenue share of coal used for gasification. This will boost production of synthetic natural gas, energy fuel, urea for fertilisers and production of other chemicals,” Joshi said.

    https://www.financialexpress.com/author/pti/

  • IMA-Daily Update Page 28

Joshi was addressing a webinar on coal gasification and liquefaction organised by the coal ministry.

This 100 MT coal gasification will happen in three phases. In the first phase -- from 2020-2024 -- 4 million tonnes (MT) of coal will be gasified and around Rs 20,000 crore will be invested for the same.

In the second phase -- from 2020-2026 -- 6 MT of coal will be gasified which will involve an investment of Rs 30,000 crore.

In the third phase -- from 2022-2030 -- 90 MT of coal will be gasified and Rs 3.6 lakh crore will be invested for the same.

Reiterating the Centre’s commitment for green initiatives in the sector, Joshi said coal gasification and liquefaction are on the government’s agenda and various actions have been taken for development of surface coal gasification.

A steering committee has been constituted in this regard under the chairmanship of V K Saraswat, member, NITI Aayog and comprising officials from the coal ministry.

Coal India also plans to set up at least three gasification plants (besides Dankuni) on build, own, operate (BOO) basis through global tendering and has signed pact with GAIL for marketing synthetic natural gas.

Joshi urged the attendees of the session to explore more about technologies and other aspects in the coal gasification sector, in line with the country’s SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis.

This will help harness the nation’s reserves for maximum utilisation while heading on the path to sustainability as per global standards, he added.

The minister also said the response to commercial coal mining has been very good.

Covid-19 continues to disrupt mining and metals sector By: Donna Slater, Creamer Media Staff Writer and Photographer

THE MINING and metals industry is being deeply impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, as the situation continues to evolve and the virus spreads throughout the world, reports financial risk management, solutions and insights company Fitch Solutions Country Risk and Industry Research.

The firm notes that, in terms of minerals and metals production, Covid-19 restrictions and associated lockdowns during the first half of the year disrupted mining operations and mineral production growth globally as governments implemented strict measures.

Fitch Solutions is also expecting more disruption in the coming months before a vaccine is made available.

    https://www.financialexpress.com/market/stock-market/coal-india-ltd-stock-price/https://www.financialexpress.com/market/stock-market/gail-india-ltd-stock-price/https://www.miningweekly.com/author.php?u_id=1145

  • IMA-Daily Update Page 29

As such, the firm says these factors will result in a decline in global mineral and metal production for this year compared with 2019.

Fitch Solutions has therefore revised downward its production growth forecasts for many key mining countries and says global mine output is likely to decline in the case of copper, nickel and coal, besides other commodities.

The firm expects iron-ore growth to be stagnant. In terms of mining jurisdictions, Fitch Solutions says Peru, Chile, India and South Africa are among the most impacted in terms of production, while mine operations in other key players such as Australia, Russia and China continue to carry on without major hurdles.

Most mining companies continue to focus on workforce safety and implementing measures such as lowering the frequency of fly-in, fly-out arrangements. In addition to a number of companies completely halting production temporarily, some have announced that they are operating at reduced capacities to enhance social distancing of workers.

As a result of the disruptions, Fitch Solutions says the mining supply chain has been disrupted with localised mineral shortages for some metal refiners, as well as international export issues such as supply of copper ore from Latin America to China being restricted owing to the rising number of Covid-19 cases in Chile and Peru reducing output.

In terms of demand for minerals and metals, these will also be affected this year, with the firm pointing to global economic recovery from Covid-19 being uneven and challenging – factors which are materialising as the pandemic continues to spread in key demand markets. This could delay the pick-up in demand.

Fitch Solutions also says it expects the global economy to contract by 4.2%, leading to a significant decline in physical demand for minerals and metals this year as the consumer, automotive manufacturers and infrastructure sectors slow around the world.

However, the firm notes that strong recovery in Chinese demand for minerals and metals post lockdown will continue in the second half of the year. This will partially offset the decrease in consumption in other markets.

In terms of metal prices, Fitch Solutions states that these have performed strongly in recent months, with copper rallying and fully recovering the losses recorded earlier in the year as a result of the pandemic.

“Gold and iron-ore prices are the two outperformers in the year to date,” states Fitch Solutions.

In this regard, the firm says it remains bullish on base metals and gold prices, and expects ferrous minerals and metals (steel and iron-ore) prices to stabilise at their current elevated levels in the coming months.

In addition, the firm says the ongoing V-shaped recovery in China and special emphasis on infrastructure investment is leading to sharp acceleration in metal demand in the country.

In terms of a metal-specific impact, the firm forecasts a decreasing supply in the short term owing to closures as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic through involuntary operational disruptions (lockdowns) as well as voluntary capacity reductions.

  • IMA-Daily Update Page 30

A significantly weaker demand outlook means that Fitch Solutions now expects global oversupply to be more severe and persist for longer than it had previously anticipated. The worst of the disruption to global supply and demand from the pandemic was in the second quarter and there will be a slow recovery moving into 2021.

“The balance of risk to our price forecast lies to the downside due to uncertainty over the longevity of the Covid-19 pandemic,” the firm concludes.
