Человек, не побоявшийся уехать в чужую страну без знания ни языка страны,

ни английского языка, вернулся на родину успешным ученым, с огромным

желанием внести вклад в развитие науки и образования в Казахстане.

БАКЕНОВ

Доктор инженерных наук, профессор Жумабай Бакенов, родился в Павлодарской области на родине академика К.И. Сатпаева и уже со школьной скамьи мечтал связать свою жизнь с химией. С той поры он занимался различными экспериментальными работами и химическими опытами по превращению химических веществ и материалов. Интерес к химии и свойствам материалов привел его на химический факультет КазНУ им. Аль-Фараби и явился определяющим фактором в выборе профессии, участию в различных проектах и научных программах и стал стимулом для проведения различных исследований уже в собственных проектах в Японии, Канаде и, надеемся, в скором времени и в Казахстане. Жумабай Бакенов получил степень доктора инженерии в одном из ведущих университетов Японии, Токийском технологическом институте (Tokyo Institute of Technology, TokyoTech), который обеспечивает специалистами крупнейшие японские компании, например, Toyota, Sony, Nissan, Sanyo.

- Доктор Бакенов, расскажите, пожалуйста, о том, каким образом вы попали в Японию?

- В 1991 году я окончил КазНУ им. Аль-Фараби. Это было тяжелое время после развала Советского Союза, и я оказался одним из немногих молодых людей, которому сразу после окончания университета предложили работать в университет и преподавать. Позже я защитил степень кандидата наук по химии и стал заместителем декана химического факультета КазНУ. В 1999 году декан факультета проф. М.К. Наурызбаев дал мне задание найти человека со знанием английского языка, готового участвовать в программе ЮНЕСКО по химии и химической инженерии в Японии. В то время на факультет не было молодежи, все ушли в бизнес. Декан предложил решение: поедешь сам. Пришлось практически выбирать между поездкой и сменой работы. Не зная английского языка, лишь только основы немецкого со школьных времен, я поехал в незнакомую страну и

учил английский уже по приезду. В течение нескольких месяцев после приезда в TokyoTech, нам удалось добиться хороших результатов в исследованиях материалов для литиевых батарей, используемых в электрических автомобилях и получить первый проект от японской компании Nissan. Мой руководитель проф. М. Вакихара предложил продолжить работу в качестве приглашенного исследователя. Позже защитил степень доктора в этой отрасли, работал в лабораториях профессоров М. Вакихара и И. Танигучи над различными индустриальными и национальными проектами Японии.

- А в какой области проходят ваши исследования в данное время?

- Я занимаюсь исследованиями в области систем для хранения энергии, другими словами, батареями, используемыми, например, в ноутбуках, телефонах, автомобилях, альтернативной и возобновляемой

энергетике. Япония является лидером в исследованиях в этой области. Наша лаборатория ведущей в Японии в разработке технологий и материалов для таких систем. Наиболее перспективными из используемых батарей - это литиевые батареи. Мои исследования связаны с разработкой катодных материалов для них. Также работаю над новыми батарейными технологиями, например литиево-серные и магниевые батареи, которые впервые стали разрабатываться два года назад в Японии. Наши проекты в Японии вошли в 32-хлетнюю программу разработки батарей для экологичного транспорта. В Казахстане я продолжаю работать в этом направлении. Назарбаев Университет предоставил мне начальный грант для развития таких работ. Мои старые партнеры из Японии, Канады, Европы, Китая и США продолжают сотрудничество

с мной. Я уже опубликовал несколько статей и подал доклады на международные конференции и журналы уже как профессор НУ. Надеюсь уже в ближайшем времени НУ станет еще одним международным центром технологий систем хранения энергии. Наличие сильной батарейной группы в любом университете мира сейчас является одним из индикаторов успешности университета.

- А как обстоят дела сейчас с этими исследованиями?

- Мы сейчас находимся в процессе подготовки и установки лаборатории в Назарбаев Университете. Закупается оборудование, какая-то часть поставляется бесплатно моими старыми партнерами. Университет только строится, не хватает лабораторных помещений, но мне уже предоставлена небольшая комната для проведения исследований. Международные лидеры в отрасли (японские компании) продолжают поставлять мне образцы новых материалов - обычная практика обмена информацией и материалами в сотрудничестве университетов с компаниями.

- Какие у Вас впечатления о стране восходящего солнца?

- Япония это уникальная и великая страна, в которой очень высоко ценятся и хранятся древняя культура и обычаи. В то же самое время Япония является самой высокотехнологичной страной в мире, ни одна другая страна не может сравниться с ней в этом. Все технологии используются для того, чтобы сделать жизнь людей удобной и безопасной. Еще поражает

отношение этого народа к природе. Бывало, что мы всем коллективом лаборатории выезжали отдыхать на открытом воздухе, брали с собой еду, воду, палатки и все принадлежности, которые могли бы там понадобиться. В парках стоят мусорные контейнеры, но никто не складывает туда свой мусор. После отдыха там не остается и следа пребывания на том месте, так как весь мусор сортируется и аккуратно складывается в специальные мешки и увозится самими отдыхающими. Уже по приезду в район проживания или в университетский кампус этот мусор утилизируется, причем расходы оплачиваются самими “производителями” мусора.

- И не тяжело ли было возвращаться после таких условий в Казахстан?

- Я все время приезжал в Казахстан, никогда не прерывал моих контактов с моими коллегами на родине. В моей группе в Японии и при моей поддержке мастерские и докторские степени получили около десяти казахстанских студентов. После Японии я не сразу вернулся в Казахстан, работал над проектом и создал научную лабораторию в Канаде. Канада чем-то похожа на Казахстан, наверное своими необъятными просторами. Я всегда искал возможность вернуться на родину и внести вклад в развитие науки и образования здесь. Думаю, что Назарбаев Университет - очень хорошая возможность для этого. Поэтому у меня получился очень легкий переезд сюда. Сейчас работаю с замечательными международными профессорами-специалистами из различных стран, которые вносят огромный вклад в развитие науки и образования в Казахстане. Многое сделано, но гораздо больше предстоит сделать.

- Какие у Вас самые яркие воспоминания о студенческой жизни?

- У нас в университете проводилось очень много мероприятий, олимпиад и семинаров. Но самое запоминающееся - это традиция собираться и отмечать неофициальный день химика. Этот праздник проходит в последнее воскресенье мая и на химфаке КазНУ организовывается вечер для выпускников химического факультета разных лет. Особенно активное участие принимают юбилейные выпуски университета. Это отличный повод собраться с друзьями, с которыми долго не виделись.

- Какие пожелания вы можете дать студентам Назарбаев Университета?

- Думаю, что нашим студентам предоставлен превосходный шанс получить хорошее образование, находясь в Казахстане. Конечно, первым делом хотелось бы посоветовать плодотворно использовать этот шанс, хорошо и добросовестно учиться. Но и нужно находить время для социальной активности, которая, несомненно, пригодится в будущем при общении с людьми и умении налаживать профессиональные связи.

Надеюсь уже в ближайшем времени НУ станет еще одним международным центром технологий систем хранения энергии.

School of engineering is one of three schools of Naz-arbayev University. It prepares the most highly demanded professionals in Kazakhstan such as chemical, mechani-cal, civil and electrical engineers. To be a part of one of the most privileged professions, student has to have an excellent knowledge in English, Mathematics, and Physics. If you are responsible, hard-working, ambitious, talented and intelligent person, your place is in our school. Only here students with big potential can get strong professional knowledge, communication skills, ability to work in team and learn how to solve difficult problems, be organized and self-confident person.

Advantages of SEng at Nazarbayev University:

• In School of Engineering, as well as in the Foundation year due to English system of education the main strategy to succeed is SELF STUDY.

• A-70-100%, B-60-70%, C-50-60%, D-40-50%! Therefore, engineering students have more chances to have high GPA.

Я была одной из моделей-участниц конкурса. Так как конкурс был интернациональным, участвовать в нем было очень интересно. Более того, конкурс полезен для совершенствования профессиональных навыков. Мне очень понравился сам процесс организации и постановки шоу. Также, я встретила множество интересных людей, настоящих профессионалов своего дела. В целом, я осталась очень довольна тем, что мне довелось поучаствовать в таком конкурсе.

T: Eсть ли у тебя приметы, связанные с модельным бизнесом?

Zh: Если честно, я не верю в суеверия, поэтому у меня нет примет связанных с модельным бизнесом.

T: Tвои ощущения с первого показа/фотосессии/конкурса?

Zh: Модельную школу я закончила будучи еще школьницей, поэтому первые фотосессии и показы были очень волнительными и полны новых ощущений. Мне очень нравился сам процесс, поэтому я всегда радовалась, когда получалось найти время для подобного рода занятий.

T: Соблюдаешь ли ты диеты?

Zh: Диет я не соблюдаю, но всегда стараюсь

следить за собой, регулярно делать минимальные физические нагрузки, а когда есть свободное время то занимаюсь спортом.

T: Kак часто носишь каблуки?

Zh: Каблуки ношу редко, в основном, это зависит от моего настроения.

T: Kак совмещаешь учебу/модельный бизнес…. и личную жизнь.. поклонники и т.д.

Zh: На данный момент я поняла, что профессиональный модельный бизнес, как, например, работа в зарубежных модельных агентствах, участие в международных конкурсах, и учебу совмещать практически невозможно. Именно поэтому учеба у меня всегда в приоритете. Что касается личной жизни и поклонников, модельный бизнес на это никак не повлиял.

T: Tвоя мечта с детства?

Zh: У меня было много желаний в детстве которые часто менялись. Самая запоминающаяся мечта - это, наверное, учиться в Гарварде.

T: Планы на будущее?

Zh: Я планирую закончить учебу, также хотелось бы получить степень PhD. Кроме того, как и все девушки, в будущем я хочу обзавестись семьей.

В детстве я торчала целыми днями у папы в гараже, о чем напоминает ромбовидный шрам на левом мизинце. Помню, что даже ремонтировала и полностью перекрашивала свой велосипед самостоятельно. Да, в детстве я не мечтала стать моделью, хотя люди вокруг часто приписывали мне такое будущее. В возрасте 15 лет я занималась в модельном агентстве, но все же выбрала наукy в качестве карьеры.

Когда я узнала о своем участии в конкурсе, для меня важнее были подготовка к финальным экзаменам и аттестация на желтый пояс. Но все же, мне хотелось получить жизненный опыт от самого конкурса красоты и попробовать себя: получится ли у меня объединить все в успешном направлении.

Все свободное от конкурса время я занималась

учебой: сдавала последние работы и проекты и начинала готовиться к экзаменам. Совсем мало времени было на сон. Тяжело было выдержать морально и физически. Однако сильная поддержка моих близких и друзей помогла мне справиться со всем.

Аттестация на желтый пояс по айкидо была сразу же на следующий день после конкурса, на что у меня физически совсем не было сил. Но моя подруга Салтанат Муратбай и тренер по айкидо Даулет Дюсекенов буквально заставили меня приехать. Таким образом, я и желтый пояс получила

When did you first start writing music?

In 1994 I went to a pawnshop to see a friend of mine, there I found a rare and expensive guitar. I had a book of chords of the songs by the Beatles, but was too inexperienced to play these guitar chords, so I started making my own mu-sic. One day my coworkers asked me to play something for them and I played my song called “Crystal glasses of wine”, which was inspired by one of my clients. She told me it was her birthday one night, she came home, and it was raining. She said: “I just knew my husband forgot my birthday, he always does. When I got into house I was already angry, as I had a bad day. When I came into the house, not only did he clean the house, he had made dinner, and he remem-bered my birthday! There were candles on the table and wine poured in glasses”. My colleagues were in awe and they told me I should record my music. So I started out on a journey and did not know where it would take me. Initially, I recorded songs on my friends’ 4 track recording system in his basement. Then I realized that the songs were pretty good and decided to record the majority of my album in the studio in Indiana. And two of the tracks I had were country songs so I recorded them in Nashville, there I found out I should have recorded my whole album there, the studio musicians are professionals, and they can make your song come to live the way you want it to.

How do you come up with inspiration to write your songs?

When I read about someone or talk to people like you, they can tell me something, sometimes it causes a thought in me, targets my heart strings. I’m not a spectator, I’m more of a participator, when I hear that someone is heartbroken I want to be a part of their feelings, I want to walk in their shoes, that’s what writing songs is about. When you write a song it becomes your child and it’s very hard to give your child away. Once it’s written, you more or less keep it to yourself, in many times, you won’t even play it for someone for awhile, because you enjoy your child. Then it comes time to let your child go into the world and become what it’s going to become.Many of my songs are like very good movies that are based upon truth. With most songs I have the idea within 10-15

Harry Dickson is an American Country music song-writer. The first time I met him I was amazed by his love for music, incredible enthusiasm, and, of course, sense of humor. Take time to get to know how music is being made.

minutes. However, at times, it takes hours to make it come out the way I want it to, and if I fall out of the mood or get distracted, it pulls me out of my vibe. Vibe is a word that all musicians understand; you have to be in your groove.So sometimes I wrote the song for 3 days, or left them for months. If I fall back into vibe for that particular song then I pull it out and I work on it. It’s all about the feeling. I also put visuals in the songs. One of my songs is called “Lucky raindrop”, it says: “It takes a lucky raindrop to fall up on a mountain top and tumble down a silent stream to make a raging river”, it’s a visual. It’s all about hooks and vibes and visuals.

And what do you think is the most important in a song to be popular, to be enjoyed by people?

I think songs are like movies, sometimes you go to a movie to laugh, or to cry, or to be entertained. I have songs that are funny and also the ones that can close line you. Im-agine if you were riding a bicycle, having a wonderful time and then you run into a close line up at the neck level, it just flips you right off the bike. Some of my songs do that, one is on my album, called “Post Office Man”. The whole song, you think, the gentleman there is talking about his wife, or ex-girlfriend, he cries and the postman says: “I’ve been here for 30 years and I can tell you true: there is no woman that’s alive that what’s you’re going through”. The postman is telling him not to cry, as no woman’s worth this, but at the end you find out it’s not his girlfriend; it’s his daughter who turned her back on him. The song is based upon the girl I know, her name is Gloria, when she was small her parents divorced and her father never came to see her. Then she grew up into a beautiful successful woman and he wants to come back to her life, but she says: “No”.

I also have a song called “A Good Old Country Song”. I started writing it as a joke and now I really love it. It says that a man is a fool, when he loves a woman, she can do just about anything to him, and he’ll take her back. When you love, you have no control of your heart. The song says: “Would I take you back? How could I go wrong? Honey, it sounds like a good old country song, when a man is al-lowed to make fool of himself and a thousand mistakes”.

When a man or a woman decide to do something, they might ask for advice but they just hope it will allow them to do things without feeling bad about what you think…

You said you played in a rock band?

At high school band I first started playing a clarinet, it was not so glamorous and then I switched to a saxophone. It was a big deal back then in the 1960s.I hooked up with two guitar players and a drummer and we would play at little venues, we had a lot of fun. It went on for a couple of years. Then I more or less dropped the music and started chasing the girls.

What kind of advice could you give to the young peo-ple, who don’t know what they are going to do in the future and what career they want to choose?

If you find a job that you enjoy you will never go to work, it’s a career. A career and a job are different things. A job is when a person goes to a factory, he can think of different things, because it’s so redundant. In a career, every day is a new movie, you have something you build on and get more proficient in it. In your mind you never get older than 38 years old, I have just turned 64, but, you know, not long ago when I was doing this music my children were afraid I was going to run off with this band. So my advice is to take advantage of every opportunity, don’t be an old person, saying “I shoulda”,” I coulda”, “If I woulda”. Never stop being ad-venturesome, never stop being a participator!

What are you going to do in the future?

I don’t care about spending a lot of money. What I really want is to witness my music to be well-known, so when I turn on the radio, I hear one of my songs; it’s like see-ing one of your children graduate from college. And the money it will bring, I would use to make the people around me happy. I don’t necessarily need to have a diamond toothbrush or some of that cuckoo stuff. I’m not very ex-travagant, I’m just happy with a chocolate candy and a good television show.

Когда Вы узнали, что будете представлять Назарбаев Университет на олимпиаде в Болгарии, были ли Вы удивлены?

Adilbek: О возможности поучаствовать на этой олимпиаде мы узнали за три-четыре месяца до ее начала. Конечно же мы обрадовались предоставленному шансу. Удивления не было, было нечто вроде радости и желания скорее испытать себя на олимпиаде.

Adilet: Принятие решения об участии на олимпиаде IMC – 2012 проходило на одной из встреч членов Математического клуба. После бурных обсуждений, мы решили, что Назарбаев Университет будет участвовать на олимпиаде. На следующей встрече Математического клуба мы уже думали о том, кто поедет на олимпиаду. Чтобы решить этот вопрос мы хотели узнать, кто хочет участвовать, а желающих было не много. Среди таковых был я, Адильбек Каиржан и Адилет Гапаров. Во всем процессе принятия решений касаемо олимпиады, я был лишь удивлен тому, что студенты Назарбаев Университета начнут участвовать на олимпиаде в 2012 году, а не в 2013. Причина заключалась в том, что уровень наших знаний на тот момент

был недостаточно высок, чтобы справиться с задачами IMC. Как минимум, нам нужен был еще один год подготовки.

Как проходила подготовка к олимпиаде?

Adilbek: Подготовка началась заранее, сразу же, как узнали об олимпиаде. Определенного плана подготовки не было. Нам выдали учебный материал, в котором были задачи с предыдущих олимпиад. Мы готовились по ним и изучали темы, которые являлись наиболее распространенными для студенческих олимпиад.

Adilet: Подготовка к олимпиаде началась 10 мая 2012 года. До конца июня мы проводили подготовку 2 раза в неделю продолжительностью в 3 часа. Затем мы начали встречаться чаще: 3 раза в неделю. Нерешенные в классе задачи мы брали домой, чтобы решить до следующей подготовки. Также я решал задачи с других источников отличных от тех, что мы решали в классе. Подготовка продолжалась до 26-27 июля, после чего мы отправились на олимпиаду.

Студенты второго курса Назарбаев Университета этим летом приняли участие в 19 Международной Олимпиаде по Математике среди студентов,

которая проходила в городе Благоевград (Болгария). Адильбек Каиржан и Адилет Утемисов стали обладателями серебряной и бронзовой медалей. Эта победа досталась ребятам за счет их усердного

труда и любви к сложнейшей из наук.

Ребята поделились своими впечатлениями об олимпиаде, ответив на вопросы журнала «Tie».

Что было самым сложным для Вас на этой олимпиаде?

Adilbek: Самое сложное – это было, наверное, настроиться. Все-таки лето, все отдыхают, а мы готовимся. Но думаю, у нас это получилось.

Adilet: На олимпиаде самым сложным для меня, конечно же, было решение задач. А затем уже адаптация: привыкание к их часовому поясу, необходимость вставать рано по утрам и прочее. А еще было сложно играть в шахматы с нашим соседом по комнате из Македонии (мы жили втроем в комнате: я, Адильбек и Златко, наш сосед).

Какие у Вас впечатления от поездки в Болгарию?

Adilbek: Уйма положительных впечатлении: познакомились со страной, городом и бытом, со сверстниками из разных стран, поделились знаниями. В общем, поездка прошла на отлично.

Adilet: Олимпиада проходила в болгарском городе Благоевград. Участники жили в общежитии American University in Bulgaria. Нас хорошо кормили, правда, чтобы покушать нам приходилось идти до главного корпуса Ameri-can University in Bulgaria, который находился в 20 мин ходьбы от общежития. Среди такого количества умных студентов мне казалось, что

Adilet: Из-за подготовки к олимпиаде я не смог поехать домой, и так получилось, что я не был дома больше полугода. Я осознал, что трудно быть вдали от семьи в течение долгого периода времени. После олимпиады у меня была только одна цель – доехать до дома как можно скорее.

Что Вы можете пожелать нашим студентам - будущим математикам?

Adilbek: Желаю всем удачи в начинаниях. Главное – верить в себя и не теряться. Неразрешимых задач не существует.

Adilet: Будущим математикам я пожелаю долгой счастливой жизни, здоровья и понятия смысла жизни. Математика математикой, но о личной жизни и о семье нельзя забывать.

School of Science and Technology is the place where you can not only receive a good knowledge, but also the place where you can find great friends among students and teach-ers. Well-educated teachers here can be an example to everybody, as they are always ready to lend their helping hands to you. SST suggests seven ar-eas of study, allowing you to choose the subjects you want to study.

Any of the seven faculties in SST has its own uniqueness:• Robotics and Mechatronics stu-dents have already programmed their first robots and made a competition among students. • Mathematicians have organized the Math club which welcomes all the students who are interested in this science. • Physics, Biology, and Chemistry

majors have their Academic Support classes in order to cooperate and do better in academic performances. • Students from Biomedical Sciences are already preparing for their future carrier. They organized the Pre-med club, which specializes on the prepa-ration to the Medical License Exam, and promotes the Healthy Lifestyle in the University. • Developing video games and devis-ing the Banking System is the primary work assigned to the Computation Sciences major students this year. Most of this seems interesting, isn’t it?

SST also invests in your out of career life.

Technical communication and pres-entation skills classes may be con-sidered as one of the most important subjects, which are very useful in our

life. Every student after graduating from the university is required to write a resume or a cover letter, and even now, when applying to the internship, which is already suggested to stu-dents, these are the first documents that are asked to be brought. Moreo-ver, upon completing the School stu-dents will be able to do the minor in Communications and other subjects.

Even now School of Science and Technology has distinguished itself as a very active group of friendly and united people, controlled by Dean of SST Dr. Ronald Bulbulian, acting together for the better studying at university. SST student council was created in the first semester and has already initiated and organized events, such as St. Valentine’s Day, International Women’s Day, and field trip to locomotive assembly plant.

“I like studying at SST. We get a good knowledge here. SST helps me not only to study, but to realize myself as a musician too. For instance, I was given a chance to organize a classical concert, (which was rescheduled for fall 2012). I don’t know how students of others schools get on with each other, but here in SST we are all friendly!”

Yermek Tussupbekov, Computational Sciences:

“Studying at SST is something interesting, because personally I have a feeling that I’m studying abroad. Advantage of studying in SST is that professors are very friendly and they are always ready to help, they want us to succeed, and are giving us an opportunity to choose subjects that we are interested in. Besides studying in our school we have different events, like 14 February or Women’s day. Because our school is new, we have some problems with availability of subjects, and we are still waiting until the whole SST block is finished, so that we can finally move to our own “house”. But i¬t is just the beginning of our professional path and of course we will have such kinds of problems.”

казахстанских хип-хоп исполнителей. Однако помните, что рифма в поэзии – важная, но не главная составляющая.

Первый и простейший тип рифм, это рифмование глаголов. И хотя бродит в народе выражение: «стих, где рифма на глаголах строится – самым первым на помойку просится», ничего плохого в рифмовании глаголов нет. Пример: «Кто же знал, что эта болезнь так тебя одолеет?Солнышко мое, крепись, жизнь никого не жалеет»

КТ – девочка моя*

*исполнители, чьи цитаты здесь приведены, не всегда рифмуют подобным образом

Следующий тип это рифмование существительных, иногда их называют «квадраты» (квадратами также иногда называют рифмование глаголов). Пример:

Еще один тип рифмовки – это отсутствие рифмы, так называемые белые стихи. В казахстанском хип-хопе я к сожалению примера такого рифмования не нашел

(хотя Кот Балу на первый взгляд делает что-то подобное).

Еще один вид, так называемый серый стих, что-то между стихом белым и обычным. Именно стих, потому что он всего один. Суть рифмы в этом стихотворении в том, что в конце каждой строчки стоят не рифмующиеся слова, а почти-рифмующиеся слова

– паронимы.

И помните: «слово исходящее из сердца до сердца и доходит»: пишет не голова и не рука, пишет душа.

Living on campus is very convenient for students, as they can study without being distracted by housework, participate in extra-curricular activities more vigorously and hang out with fellow students. However, one of the ‘side effects’ of a relatively small group of people living together can be the transmission of false unsupported information, or loosely speaking, gossiping. To investigate this phenomenon I decided to observe the process in action.

So how do I track rumour spreading? Right, I began it by myself! I decided to run a small social experiment. My friend, Ayakoz kindly agreed to help me and become the centre of the rumour that I made up. Because the time was limited, I restricted the circle of ‘subjects’ down to people, who met her and talked to her daily. I shared a thought that ‘apparently Ayakoz is married’ with one of her EAP group mates. While whispering that, I felt so uncomfortable, lying didn’t feel right, but I justified it for myself: it was for the sake of the experiment. That’s it. The rumour machine had been started up.

The result was surprising even for me. In five days a person came up to Ayakoz and asked: whether it was true that she got married and had to babysit her new born daughter and it was the reason why she entered NU a year after her graduation from high school’. Not only the rumour spread very quickly but it was exaggerated too!

I think this is something each of us can learn a lesson from. The aim of the experiment was to persuade the readers, NU students in particular, to stop spreading such information about each other, especially if you are not sure whether it is true or not. I suggest a resolution to everyone including myself: “if you wouldn't write it and sign it don't say it”©.

На момент взятия интервью, одной из главных целей молодого, талантливого и подающего большие надежды вратаря Снежных Барсов и Молодёжной сборной Казахстана – Павла Полуэктова - было попасть в ХК Барыс. И уже сейчас, по истечению такого короткого времени, Павел с уверенностью защищает цвета столичного «Барыса», и является ярким примером для подрастающего поколения.

Т: С чего началась твоя карьера хоккеиста?П: В этом спорте я уже на протяжении 12 лет. Как-то раз мы с мамой проходили мимо ледового дворца, и я решил попробовать, после чего мне понравилось, и вот результат.

Т: Если бы ты не стал хоккеистом, то кем бы ты был? П: Знаете, у меня был опыт работы. 10 месяцев в году у меня спорт – хоккей, два месяца я отдыхаю, и из-за того, что ты из года в год тренируешься, ты привыкаешь к этому режиму и потом тяжело переключиться на отдых, т.е. когда ты приезжаешь домой, ты полмесяца-месяц отдохнешь, потом тебя

начинает обратно тянуть в спорт. И вот в течение этого месяца, я устраиваюсь на работу. В-основном, эта работа связана со сферой дизайна, включая веб-дизайн, автомобильный дизайн, полиграфию.

Т: Возникало ли когда-нибудь желание бросить хоккей?П: Нет. Я сам себя ловлю на мысли, мог ли я за эти тринадцать лет вообще о таком думать? Нет, я никогда таких мыслей не допускал, потому что это даже не хобби, это не спорт, даже не работа, это - жизнь. Я получаю от этого удовольствие изо дня в день, и какими бы тяжелыми не были тренировки, я знаю, чего это стоит.

Т: Кто ты по натуре: мечтатель или реалист?П: Наверное, я стараюсь, чтобы мои мечты превращались в цели. Ведь мечты они на то и мечты, чтобы мечтами оставаться. Я стараюсь думать только о достижимых вещах. Порой о чем-то подумаешь, и кажется, что не реально и это очень тяжело, а потом когда со временем к этому приходишь, думаешь «Да, по силам», и потом себе ставишь еще более высокую цель. Ты уже знаешь, что хоть и тяжело выглядит эта цель, но по силам к ней добраться, было бы желание. Так что я, скорее всего реалист, оптимистичный реалист.

Т: Какие качества в людях тебя отталкивают? А какие притягивают? П: Самое главное для меня – это доверие. Я считаю, что это одно из самых ценных качеств в социуме, в обществе. Искренность, человечность, жизнерадостность тоже очень важно.

Т: На твой взгляд, какие качества в девушке являются неприемлемыми?

П: Я не приемлю курение, алкоголь, тем более, наркотики. Меня привлекают девушки, которые следят за собой в плане спорта. Ещё один плюс в девушке, которая имеет представление о спорте, это то, что ей будет проще меня понять. Если я скажу после игры, что не хочу сейчас разговаривать, я устал, и я буду отдыхать, то 87 % процентов девушек обидятся в ответ на это. Что еще я не приемлю? Я не люблю пафос, показуху. Я не могу разглагольствовать о своей личной жизни, с кем-то это обсуждать. Если я девушку называю своей девушкой, то я должен это беречь, и совестливо к этому относиться, а пафос – мне это не нравится.

Т: Как ты думаешь, над чем человек должен постоянно работать?П: По-поводу, работы над собой, я считаю, что всё в наших руках. И если тебя что-то не устраивает или раздражает, то не стоит жаловаться на самого себя, ведь ты сам можешь это изменить, не нравится - меняй. Я считаю, что нет таких вещей, которые нельзя поменять. Конечно, есть какие-то серьёзные проблемы, связанные с жизнью, например – не можешь вернуть родных. Но в большинстве случаев ты сам в ответе за свою жизнь. Поэтому, я ценю людей, которые любят жизнь и живут каждым днём. Над чем мне стоит поработать? Ну, есть много направлений, так как все мы не идеальны. Думаю, что над терпением не мешало бы поработать. Тяжело дать объективную оценку по отношению к себе, поэтому над терпением.

Т: Что по-твоему успех?П: Лично для меня успех – это, в первую очередь, ощущение того, что ты добился чего хотел. Успех других может включать в себя материальное состояние, хорошая личная, семейная жизнь, отсутствие проблем со здоровьем. Это, наверное, и есть успех.

Т: Чтобы добиться успеха нужно долго и упорно трудиться, или многое зависит от фортуны?П: Из личного и жизненного опыта, я думаю, что всё в жизни взаимно. Я считаю, что всё приходит через труд. Когда ты трудишься в плане спорта, то сначала тяжело физически, но эмоционально легко, потому знаешь, каким будет результат. Если ты будешь делать что-либо без желания, то у тебя ничего не получится, и от этого толку не будет. Ты только будешь себя сжигать. Поэтому всё приходит через труд, работу, здоровье, через стремление.

Каждый человек в той или иной мере обладает творческими способностями. Тем не менее, несмотря на уроки рисования и музыки в начальных классах школ, наша образовательная система и порой, культурные особенности, не дают полностью развиваться креативности, больше акцентируя внимание на практичность, и важность технических специальностей.

Для начала, давайте определим что такое креативность. “Креативность – это как порнография, вы понимаете что это, только тогда, когда увидите своими глазами, ” говорит Рекс Юнг [RexJung], ученый-исследователь в Mind Research Network в Альбекуерке, Нью-Мексика. На протяжении последних тридцати лет доктор Юнг опирается на общее определение креативности: “ Умение сочетать новизну и

пользу в конкретном социальном контексте“. Кэннет Хэйлман [Kenneth Heilman], невролог из университета Флориды и автор книги “Creativity and the Brain” (2005) в свою очередь говорит, что творчество предполагает не только придумывать что-то новое, но и отказ от привычных ответов и традиционных решений. А такой подход требует храбрости.

Креативность – это качество, которое ценится в людях на протяжении жизни. Необычные идеи и неординарный склад ума

приветствуются и в учебе и в работе. Но есть и оборотная сторона медали: бытует мнение, что творческие и креативные люди обладают характеристиками, которые делают их уязвимыми.

Нэнси Андрисэн [Nancy C. Andreasen] в своей книге “TheCreativeBrain” утверждает, что такие люди открыты для нового опыта, терпимы к неопределенности и их подход к жизни дает им возможность воспринимать мир незаурядно, но они больше подвержены плохому настроению и депрессии. В то время как менее творческие люди, по мнению этого специалиста, быстрее реагируют на происходящие события под влиянием или на основе того, что им было сказано другими.

Итак, что же поможет нам стать креативнымы?

Рецепт № 1: Вообрази себе… “Слабенький” ученик, исключенный из школы, Альберт Эйнштейн любил задавать себе занимательные вопросы. Например, сколько времени займет путешествие от поверхности Солнца до крайней точки Вселенной верхом на солнечном луче? Это привело его к открытию теории относительности. А тебя может привести к открытию новых идей.

Рецепт № 2: Невозможное возможноТак называемое "Янусовское

“Teaching and learning is a combined process for me” Interview with Agnieszka Kosinska UCL UPC chemistry professor

Could you tell us about yourself, please? I was born in Poland. I come from a very small town, it has only 3 000 citizens and most people in Poland have no idea where it is. I did my first degree in chemical technology at the Technical University of Gdansk. Both of my parents are teachers, so I used to enjoy studying. I’ve been in education for about 23 years. After my first degree I did the second Master of Science at the University of San Francisco. Then I applied for various postgraduate programs. I got an offer from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, but for a strange reason I did not like it there. I decided to come back to Europe and study towards PhD degree at University of St Andrews, Scotland. I always wanted to do something connected with medicine; therefore I chose research in medicinal chemistry. I synthesized about 187 novel compounds on the way to the nitric oxide prodrug, which can be eventually used for treating the renal ischemia condition.

Who did you want to become as a child?

I think I wanted to be an opera singer or a ballet dancer! I definitely did not want to do anything related to science. Then in high school I realized I wanted to be a lawyer, but I did not pass the exams to the law school. I was always interested in many different things at the same time. In high school I used to sing in a choir. I really enjoyed it, and I miss this activity now. Once I started science degree in Poland, my time was occupied by studying, with all of that labs and projects; it was just studying and nothing else. When did you first realize that you want your life and your career to be connected with chemistry and this particular field of science? When did you become attracted to it, was there a special moment that you can recall?

I would never say that chemistry was my passion. I’m from a country where everything must be

reasonable, you do not necessarily allow yourself a lot of freedom, at least for my generation. Now everything has changed and young people do not tend to stay at work they do not enjoy. But at that time the job market in Poland collapsed and even with Master Engineer degree from a technical university I could not find a good job. I think it was in San Francisco where I first realized I liked teaching chemistry. Since then I started thinking about teaching at a university, but I knew that in order to do it I had to have a higher degree. What is the most interesting part of the job of a teacher for you?

I always enjoy the idea of studying something new. Teaching and learning is a combined process for me, when I’m teaching, the students teach me something as well. When you have to explain a very difficult concept, it’s challenging, but sometimes students by the way they ask questions or understand certain

concepts will help you to find the easiest way to explain chemistry to the wider audience. I also like meeting new people and I travelled a lot to learn something new about the culture, the people and about myself. I have taught in Poland, then US, Scotland and now Kazakhstan. I had 2 Kazakh students at the foundation program at the University of St. Andrews, and I met one of them in Astana last summer!

We know that for instance last year you were responsible for the whole chemistry department in our university and at the same time you had a kid and family? How do you manage to balance the career and family life?

I definitely would not have been able to do it without the support of my husband and TAs: Aizhan, Damel, Aliya and Aisulu. I am a bit of a perfectionist, but I have to prioritize things as I am not able to perform everything at 100%. Sometimes you have to let go or postpone activities that used to be important for you. Obviously, family and friends are the most important for me. Unfortunately, I do not have as much time for my friends as I would like to have. When you are so busy you need to start building up the hierarchy of things that need to be done in order not to get lost in your own life.

What are your side interests apart from chemistry?

At the moment I don’t do a lot of the things for myself. I really like swimming, which is not easy to do here, especially during winter. I like psychology and somehow I manage to find time to read various books about the psychological development of children. There are no schools for parents and it is a very hard job

to raise kids. It takes time to learn how to love your children in order for them to be happy, to have a childhood and at the same time an opportunity to develop. Recently I was given a book by Jesper Juul, a Danish family therapist, who has a bit controversial approach to the family as a general concept. I really enjoy reading his book and agree with him on many levels. You need to respect the child exactly in the same way you respect yourself! I also like yoga. Before giving birth to Dominik, I wanted to be an Ashtanga yoga teacher, but there is no time for it now, so I gave up this idea until my children would be more independent. You can think of yoga from the point of exercises and philosophy. I wanted to do a little bit of both, not only a physical exercise that gives you strength, but also finding a place in yourself where everything is static, or at least it is in a dynamic equilibrium. If you were not a chemist and a teacher what would you do for living?

I would definitely like to be a teacher, an educator. Now I’m thinking of another master degree in education, or a postgraduate diploma that I can apply in teaching. I would like to find a way to make studying chemistry an enjoyable process for students, so that they could learn it not only for a pass mark or to get a degree and a good job. Here young people’s interest in studying science is mainly grades driven, and I have a feeling that there is not enough of general curiosity to make studying chemistry an enjoyable process.

We know that you are an accomplished professional, but can you recall, what was your greatest failure, and what did you learn from it?

The first year of my undergraduate degree in Poland

was very difficult for me since I did not know how to enjoy being a student. I didn’t want to study chemistry, although I had all the capacities for it. I felt disappointed, as I wanted to be a lawyer, and was concentrating on the negative aspects of being at this particular university and program. So I failed 2 exams and had to retake the courses, otherwise I risked being expelled from the university. At the same time I felt I couldn’t concentrate on such subjects as chemical engineering or technical drawing. I did not enjoy them at all. At some point I realized that it is me who had to make a decision in order to change everything. I remember it was a very tough summer when I had to retake the exams. I remember working very hard, solving all the challenging problems. I passed the exams and subsequently I got the scholarship for good grades, although I barely passed the first year.I always wanted to study abroad, using a different language. My first choice was France, and I applied to the University of Poitiers, situated near the west coast of France. I got the offer to do PhD there, but I could not get the money for studying abroad, as Poland was not a part of the EU at the time. I can read in French but I don’t think I’ll ever have courage to speak, unless I start living in France and am forced to do it! I wanted to study chemistry in French as a second language like you do in English. When you study in a nonnative language, you need to hear the language on the daily basis; through practice and everyday communication you’ll gain proficiency. Therefore, I keep encouraging students here to use English as often as possible.

I have read an article you posted on Facebook, and it talks a little bit of women discrimination in scientific fields, such as mathematics,

chemistry and physics. Have you personally experienced that? What was your approach in dealing with this?

I wanted to specialize in the organic chemistry when I was in Poland. I remember talking to one of the professors about my plans and he told me that this is not a very female area of chemistry, and maybe I should do fatty acids and cosmetics specialty instead. At the end this is what I did, but I had a feeling that he didn’t want me to do it because I was a woman. Maybe it was because of the engineering character of the school and many male professors found it not a suitable place for women. Moreover, I think, that those times were a borderline between old and new when not many people wanted to accept the changes that were happening in my country. Women started having the same jobs as men, and the husband was not the only person supporting family financially. I did not encounter any gender related issues in the US or UK. I think there is no discrimination of women in science or PhD research. However, the problem is that in order to be

a successful woman in the field of chemistry, I do not think you can have a family. I know female professors that are successful, but very few of them have families. I guess, they decided to give up this part of their lives so they can have all time available for the job and be able to perform at the same level as men. In science, in order to publish and achieve your goals you need a lot of money and applying for

grants is a very time consuming and difficult process. It’s not easy to take a break to have a family. From my perspective, it’s easier for mathematicians to do research, for example, as it is not necessary for them to be in the lab, whereas for a chemist it is a crucial factor.

There are times when we lack confidence and feel like it is easier to give up then persevere, but what kind of words or a piece of advice could you give to the people to help them stay motivated and don’t give up their studies? We don’t know how much we can handle. We think that it’s beyond our limits, but actually once you are in a certain situation and it’s already happening you are able to find solutions quite easily. The only thing you can’t do anything about is death or illness. From any other situation, no matter how difficult, there is a way out. In Poland we have a saying: “Whenever someone closes a door, God will open a window”. There’s always a way out, we are just not able to see it. I believe that from whatever happens to us we

can always withdraw a positive conclusion. Moreover, a particular change in our life scenario can also be the fulfillment of our dreams, but we are not able to identify it correctly at the time. We realize later, that we got what we wanted. Sometimes we just don’t know how to appreciate failures because society would label us as losers, only in the future, we can think that it was a good thing that I did not get what I wanted.

Unfortunately, some of the students that failed the exams had to leave the university. What piece of advice could you give them?

I would advise them to think of it as another opportunity, a good turn of events. I don’t think that they lost years or lost time. Even though they didn’t manage to be successful, to pass the exams, maybe it’s a sign or indication that they didn’t work hard enough or this particular subject is not suitable for them. They are still young and they can change everything in their lives and start from the beginning. Beginnings are always nice: the beginning of a relationship, of a new job, of a university. However, you need to make sure you won’t make the same mistakes. You realize now that whatever happened was due to your actions, but at the same time you should be happy about the people you’ve met and the progress you‘ve made even though the exam results were not successful. I’m sure those students have learnt something and they can use this experience, to make more thoughtful choices in the future. You are not necessarily sure what you want to do for living when you are 18 years old. When you fail the exam you think it is the end of the world, but let’s say in 5 years time, because of the changes that are happening now, you changed your life completely and you‘ll find yourself extremely happy just because you didn’t pass the exams!

думают об университете?

Удивил ли вас Университет чем-нибудь необычным?

Мадина: Да, вполне удивил потому, что когда я первый раз пересекла порог Назарбаев Университета, меня удивил именно атриум! Я никогда не видела такого красивого заведения! Когда мои друзья увидели фотографию атриума, они спрашивали: это в Дубае или в Эмиратах, где это? Это то, что удивило во внешнем плане. Если говорить о людях, то это в первый раз, когда я сталкиваюсь с тем что все ребята очень дружелюбные, между ними нет вражды, и даже нет чувства соперничества.

Еркебулан: Очень удивил своим дружелюбием.

Айзада: Качеством образования.

Что ты думаешь об атмосфере в НУ?

Мадина: Когда заходишь в этот университет, чувствуется, как

интеллект парит в воздухе, все студенты учатся, стараются чтобы добиться GPA 4.0. И ты проникаешься этим чувством и тоже хочется стать лучше и подтвердить свой статус студента этого университета. И конечно же тебе хочется поговорить с каждым, потому что все интересны как личность.

Еркебулан: Опять же, дружелюбие – что есть редкость в остальных университетах, школах. А здесь нас приняли очень тепло. Запомнился первый день – когда нас попросили встать, и все хлопали, поприветствовали

Айзада: Атмосфера располагает к учебе и довольно дружелюбная.

Как ты относишься к пальмам?

Мадина: Пальмы – это особая часть университета и думаю, они делают его особым и не похожим на других в плане дизайна.

Еркебулан: Пальмы – это зло.

Айзада: Никак, они мне не мешают. Сад из пальм - интересная деталь в интерьере университета.

Вам нравится еда, общежитие, библиотека?

Мадина: Все очень нравится, особенно библиотека. Потому что, оно дает нам огромное количество книг, по которым мы можем заниматься. Говоря о еде, второй этаж восхитителен! Там огромный выбор, чего к сожалению не сказать о meal-planе. Тем не менее, это не самая главная проблема.

Еркебулан: Все вполне устраивает.

Айзада: Все очень нравится. Но, так как количество студентов увеличивается, неплохо было бы расширить библиотеку.

Тяжело ли было вам адаптироваться?

Мадина: У университета есть уже свой сленг, насколько я поняла. Некоторые выражения все еще чужды, может специальный словарик завести?

Еркебулан: Да. Эти выражения мне уже давно известны.

Айзада: Да, потому что часто вижу их вконтакте.

Я люблю NU, потому что...

Мадина: Это место, где я могу быть собой, где со мной те люди, которые будут рядом по жизни. И именно здесь я могу достичь свои цели. Еркебулан: Потому что гладиолус. Шучу потому что он лучший.

Айзада: Потому что я здесь учусь!
