PREFACE

Dear friends of Tara Trust,

Tara Trust has gone through a cycle of reinventing itself. We have moved from our traditional

`Welfare' mode to the `Program' mode where gender, continuity and sustainability issues are

addressed. However, the integrated intervention and rights approach still continue. The change is

more internal to Tara Trust.

I am happy to share with you the Tara Trust Annual Report (2015 – 16) with a request to support

us with your thoughts, words and actions. We look forward to a bright future and a better world.

GOVERNANCE

Decentralization: A key for effective governance.

Tara firmly believes that good governance seeks to promote growth and social justice. But the

social security, rehabilitation and employment schemes of the Government is yet to change the

lives of the poor. Despite decentralization and Amendment of the Panchayati Raj (local

governance) Act, power in real terms has not been transferred to the lowest rung of the ladder of

governance – the Gram Sabha level. Therefore, Tara will continue to advocate for proper

representation of the marginalized, in the Panchayati Raj system.

OVERVIEW

Tara Trust is a registered non-profit organization in Goa, India, with the mission to empower,

educate and enable the underprivileged, especially children and women, to improve their lives.

The Objective is to motivate children within the marginalized communities coming from

difficult situations, economically febrile backgrounds, and those children, orphaned or

abandoned, to not only stay in school but to gain an understanding and appreciation of the

importance of education and to develop confidence within them to pursue a higher education and

a sense of self-determination, enabling them to aspire for a better life.

Our Method of using creative engagement to encourage a child's personal growth is driven by

the belief that in following traditional forms of education alone we are neglecting an integral part

of one's self development. We conduct extensive art based and creative workshops along with

numerous intercultural programs and activities, which supports the discovery of each child's own

abilities enabling them to reach their full potential.

Our Impact stems from the ability to form lasting relationships, which we continue to develop

on a weekly basis throughout their formative years that allow us to build upon the strengths of

each child while addressing their individual needs and limitations. By not only teaching these

children and presenting them with positive role models, but assisting in their overall

development through holistic learning, interactions with our volunteers and exposure to trained

specialists.

The first quarter of the financial year 2015-2016, saw the 5 weeks of Summer Workshops at the

Tara Trust Center, from the end of April to the end of May. We conducted 28 weekly workshops

for children and 12 workshops with the women this quarter. We received permission from the

Women and Child Development Department of Goa, to work with more Anganwadis, and with

one Government Middle School from the Directorate of Education in Goa.

The highlight of the second quarter was the commencement of our Free Weekly Workshop

programme with the Anganwadi‟s, Govt. Primary Schools and Institution‟s in our operational

area. We conducted 192 free weekly workshops for children‟s and 33 workshops with the

women‟s this quarter. This comprises the bulk of work completed in the reporting period. Anuj

Sharma a fashion designer from Ahmadabad conducted a series of workshops from the 26th of

July 2015 to 2nd August 2015 followed by an exhibition of their products in September. Our

Project Director, Ms. Juhi Pandey, made her annual inspection trip to Jamyang School in early

5

September. For our India Projects, we conducted workshops on creativity and life skills in three

of our project partnered schools in Bodh Gaya and Varanasi.

The third quarter witnessed a number of festivals thus there were school breaks therefore we

worked on a total of 132 workshops. Out of which 116 were the free weekly workshops, 16

women‟s skill development workshops. Sofie and Izze, both volunteers from the UK, joined our

project in the month of November. They both worked with the women‟s skill development

program and came up with different ideas of cutting paper bags and also assisted with the free

weekly workshops for institutions.

The final quarter witnessed a shift of the Tara Trust office to our registered address i.e. the

residence of our founder Dr. Katharina P. Kakar. We conducted 124 free weekly workshops for

children and were also working towards exhibiting the art work that was learnt and made by

children during the free weekly workshops at the institutions.

A total of 546 workshops, which includes both children‟s free weekly workshops, women‟s

income development programme and summer camp workshops were conducted for the annual

year 2015-2016.

SUMMER CAMP 2015

to participate. Starting from 27th April to 29th May, we conducted full day workshops on:

•Movement & Textiles

•Theater Animation

•Mural Painting

•Paper-Craft & Book-Making

The results of this 5 week workshop were 4 short animation films, wooden tables and earrings,

natural dyed fabrics with embroidery, and a wall mural. We shall be continuing this process of

workshops once the school year commences from July 2015, as weekly workshops at the center.
