LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHY

“A story is the shortest distance between two people,” they say. I see myself as a

storyteller: I create platforms for people to talk about their stories, I collect stories, I find

ways to share stories with diverse audiences, and I employ stories to inform theoretical

paradigms, policy-making, design practice, and pedagogical approaches. My focus are the

stories of community members whose voices are often not heard, such as:

Refugees, immigrants, and members of minority groups.

Victims of sex trafficking, and

Children with mental health challenges.

The driver behind my interdisciplinary and community-engaged scholarship is my belief

that social inequalities are partly spatially constructed and are therefore, malleable. Design

matters and can be leveraged for innovation and change to create healthy and connected

communities in which everyone can thrive, what I call Culturally Enriched Communities

(CEC).

SCHOLARLY DISSEMINATIONS – PUBLICATIONS, PRESENTATIONS, DIGITAL RESOURCES, AND EXHIBITS

As a way to reach diverse audiences, my scholarship findings and teaching pedagogies

are published in a variety of forms, ranging from academic books to blind-reviewed

journals, conference proceedings, on-line resources for design practitioners, policy

makers, and advocates, blogs, and exhibits. At the same time, because of my scholarship’s

interdisciplinary and community-engaged nature, I pursue conference and journal

publications from diverse disciplines/fields. I am a member of the Environmental Design

Research Association (EDRA), where I served as Editor of EDRA Connections and the

Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC), where I served as Guest Editor for a

Symposium and Special Issue for the Journal of Interior Design on Design and Culture.

Primary authors are noted where needed and presenters are underlined.

Books

Hadjiyanni, T. (to be available in 2019). The right to home – Exploring how space, culture,

and identity intersect with disparities. New York, NY: Palgrave Macmillan.

This book uses stories from Hmong, Somali, Mexicans, Ojibwe, and African Americans

in Minnesota to explore how the spatial characteristics of homes can support or suppress

peoples’ attempts to create meaning in their lives, which can impact well-being and

delineate the production of health, income, and educational disparities. The book’s

Page 8: Tasoulla Hadjiyanni, Ph - Interior Design€¦ · Tasoulla Hadjiyanni, thadjiya@umn.edu 3 Associate Professor – Interior Design – Fall 2010 – Summer 2016 Department of Design,

8

purpose is to inspire a sense of wonder about the human capacity to create meaning and

rally home mediators (scholars, educators, design practitioners, policy makes, and

advocates) to work toward Culturally Enriched Communities, communities in which

everyone can thrive. Through elaborating on how kitchen layouts restrict cooking, the

size of social areas limits gatherings with friends, walls construct connections to spirits,

windows nourish the soul, and dining tables instil aspirations, the discussion expands

understanding of how space intersects with income, race, gender, citizenship, ability,

religion, and ethnicity to posit that social inequalities are partly spatially constructed and

are therefore, malleable.

Hadjiyanni, T. (2002). The making of a refugee – Children adopting refugee identity in

Cyprus. Westport, CT: Praeger Publishers.

Through interviews of 100 children of refugees in Cyprus, born after their family’s displacement,

I illustrate the formation of a refugee consciousness, an identity adopted by many children who

never experienced the actual displacement of their family. Focusing on the process by which a

child born into a refugee family develops a refugee identity, the book identifies nine dimensions

that inform this consciousness. Establishing the family as the primary transmitter of the refugee

identity and the child as its constructor, I point to the power of homeplace in forming and

supporting such an identity. Housing issues are also examined as a contributing factor, as refugee

housing is typically distinct, and constrained, compared to housing for native citizens of a

community. The book challenges the notion that refugee consciousness is a separate identity and

a crisis by reinterpreting it as a resistance to adversity.

Hadjiyanni, T. (2016) Toward Culturally Enriched Communities. This resource acts as an educational tool for policy makers, elected officials, and planners

working to position the state of Minnesota for a successful and vibrant future. Developed

in partnership with the Urban Land Institute Minnesota, Culturally Enriched Communities

are communities in which everyone can thrive. Lending weight to the eight principles of

Culturally Enriched Communities are design-related best practices collected from

organizations and institutions around the Twin Cities metro area.

(2014) The Housing Policy Tool Box -

http://www.housingpolicy.org/toolbox/index_MN.html Developed by the Urban Land Institute Minnesota (ULI MN) and the Regional Council

of Mayors, the Tool Box is on-line resource that outlines over 32 roles and policies,

including best practices, for how to achieve choice in housing. I reviewed the Tool Box

for culturally sensitive housing choices; restructured it to make it easier to follow;

revamped the Introduction to better relate why access to housing choices is important and

how a community can move in that direction; added a section on culturally sensitive

housing and communities that includes a “before” and “after” scenario; edited all sections

for language that is culturally sensitive, revising definitions in the process; updated

imagery to highlight best practices that demonstrate the diversity in what housing choice

can mean and how to achieve it; and infused principles of healthy places into the language

used in the Tool Box.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

Questions of equity and marginalization are also embedded into my teaching efforts. I

develop pedagogies that challenge students to consider how culture and identity are

produced and the role of interiors in the process through studio (IDes 3605 – Interior

Design Studio V), lecture (IDes 3162 – History of Interiors and Furnishings 1750 -

Present), and seminar courses (DES 4165-5165 – Design and Globalization).

STUDENT ADVISING

In the Department of Design, Housing, and Apparel, graduate degrees are

interdisciplinary. For the Interior Design emphasis, there are typically 8-10 students, at

varying levels of degree completion, who are dispersed for advising among the faculty.

At the undergraduate level, students are distributed among faculty and advised on study

abroad and internship opportunities as well as career choices. Because of my

interdisciplinary approach, I often serve on committees of students from other

fields/colleges as well.
