ANNUAL REPORTYOUNG LIFE2010

“How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’”— Romans 10:14-15, TNIV

DEAR FRIENDNot long ago, an active sophomore boy named Bryan was stricken with a mysterious and debilitating disease. Lately his life has been a desperate search for a doctor who can give him hope — or even an accurate diagnosis. This fall, as he was lying in a hospital bed halfway across the country from his friends, he had one request. “Skype me on Monday night and let me watch club through my computer.”

When Bryan returned home, his Young Life leader came to visit and asked him a simple question, “Are you ready to trust Jesus?” Bryan said yes. And now, as his tender life draws to an early close, he has tasted the kindness of the Savior and knows that the Lord is good. Thank God that He has given Bryan eyes to see Jesus, even when it meant watching Young Life club on his computer in the hospital. Thank God that He has given Bryan ears to hear the good news, even when his leader had to lean close and speak up to ask a question. And thank God that He has given Bryan an appetite for the Bread of Life, even as his physical appetite is failing. I have one more “thank God” statement. Thank God that He has allowed us the privilege to be part of Bryan’s life through this mission. As you take a moment to read this Annual Report, I hope you’ll think of Bryan. I hope all the numbers, charts and graphs will somehow trace his profile and spell his name. We are maximizing all of our resources in Young Life to double our reach to two million kids within the next six years, but we are reaching those kids one club, one leader, one conversation at a time. Bryan represents the urgency of the moment, the magnitude of the need. Over the past 16 years, we’ve more than doubled the number of kids reached, leaders raised and ministries rooted through Young Life. Now, through the Reaching a World of Kids (RWOK) initiative, we want to do it again in less than half the time. Countless kids are waiting to meet Jesus. We want them to be as blessed as Bryan. We want them to taste, hear and see that the Lord is good. Thanks for taking the time to read this report. It is a privilege to partner with you in Young Life.

In Christ,

Every leader is a living, breathing “taste test” of Jesus Christ as they go to where kids congregate and build relationships with them. Kids can “taste and see that the Lord is good” through their interaction with leaders, their initial experience of club or camp and their invitation to know the One who referred to Himself as the Bread of Life.

“I really went just to hang out with those guys. I remember them being so happy. It was the one thing they had in common. I knew supposedly why, but I didn’t believe it.”

— Vinny Paiva, a student at the University of Kentucky who met Christ through Young Life College

“[Haitian kids] need people to come and help them know they’re not alone — that God is always with them. We represent God in the world. For me, I represent God in Haiti; I am the eyes of God in Haiti; I am the hands of God in Haiti.”

— Chedrick Caneus, Young Life Haiti national director

“My surprise as a senior citizen has been that age is no barrier when it comes to building friendships with kids. Kids just want to be connected with adults who care.” — Myron Salisian, 64-year-old volunteer leader at Pasadena High School in California

“In a large Asian country, a young student who had been loved by a volunteer from the United States asked, ‘Why do your eyes and heart match?’ and came to discover the Jesus within who is the answer.”

— Lee Corder, senior vice president, International North Division

SO KIDS CANTASTE

YOUNg LIFE mINISTRY comes in a flavorful blend of five main ingredients:

ContaCt work involves caring adults going to kids and building bridges of friendship.

CLUB is a high-energy, weekly celebration filled with humor, music and a life-changing message. Here kids encounter the truth about Christ with the freedom to respond as they choose.

Our CaMPS provide kids with the greatest week of their lives in a gorgeous place, where they’re lavished with food, fun and the greatest love story ever told.

Our weekly Bible study, CaMPaIGnErS, helps kids grow in their faith, and we encourage them to celebrate this faith through participation in a local church.

The local Young Life CoMMIttEE, comprised of parents and other adults, provides a firm foundation of financial, administrative and moral support for staff and leaders.

• Developing Global Leaders• Young Life College• Alumni and Friends• Teachers in Mission• Latino Student Staff• Staff/Leader training and development

Leaders are not only the first “sampling of Christ” kids experience — they also continue to feed kids through their time, care and wisdom. Within our Reaching a World of Kids (RWOK) initiative, we’re committed to leveraging the power of volunteers through leadership development. Some of the initiatives which fall under this umbrella are:

“Those who drink the water I give them will never thirst.”

— John 4:14, TNIV

Three of the greatest sounds in life are laughter, music, and the voice of a caring adult calling your name. In Young Life, kids enjoy hearing all of these. From early fall through late summer, skits, songs and speakers powerfully convey the joy and depth of abundant life.

“At camp, the speaker walks up and starts talking. I told myself, ‘I guess I’ll take a chance and listen.’ That’s what I did. I kept on listening and listening. He wasn’t one of those long preachers. And one night we left club all quiet. They turned out the lights, and I went outside. I decided, ‘I should start believing. Why wait?’”

— Paul McCown, a camper from Tullahoma, Tenn.

“What Young Life has done for me is of more worth than gold. Your teachings have transformed my life to a new leaf — a better person in the society. I’m more responsible, more focused and walking with Christ in me. Thanks.”

— Charles Kigotho, 19, Nairobi, Kenya

“The speaker was talking about God in a way I had never heard before. I realized it was not enough to just be good. That morning, everything changed. I felt absolutely elated. It was certainly the best decision I ever made.”

— Don Pooley, professional golfer, remembering his Young Life experience

SO KIDS CAN

HEAR

PAGE 5

YOUNg LIFE desires every kid to taste, hear and see the Good News with ministries that are appropriate for them. wyldLife is our outreach to middle school kids, Young Life is for kids in their high school years, and Young Life College is our program for college and university students.

Young Life has 4,647 ministries in 72 countries around the world. Our multicultural/urban ministry, focused on kids in diverse cultural communities and those in economically depressed areas, is arguably the largest of its kind in the United States.

Young Life Capernaum is the name of our ministry with kids with disabilities and YoungLives is what we call our work withteen moms. In a partnership with Military Community Youth Ministries, Young Life reaches military teens through a program called Club Beyond. The Small town/rural initiative brings Young Life to communities of fewer than 25,000 people, and amicus is Young Life’s international student exchange program.

What will it take for even more kids to hear the good news of Jesus Christ? Quite simply, we can do what we do best for more kids in more places by sustaining and starting ministries …

“Whoever hears my word and believes him who sent

me has eternal life.”— John 5:24, TNIV

An eyewear ad once proclaimed, “There’s no greater feeling than helping a child see clearly for the first time.” The same can be said of our work with kids. In Young Life, we help kids see so much — from the beauty of God’s creation, to caring relationships with adults, to meeting the One we know as “the Light of the world.” Seeing Christ for the first time also allows them to see a different way … a way of hope.

“I love Young Life because they’re not a bunch of people trying to force you to find God ... they’re a bunch of people trying to create a place so He can find you.”

— Tozia, a camper, after a week at SharpTop Cove, Young Life’s camp in Georgia

“Young Life camp was when I realized I shouldn’t be angry. It was an eye opener. God works in mysterious ways and I saw that I need God to get me through the journey instead of doing it on my own.”

— Sally Lewis, a Young Life camper, Tyler, Texas

“I received Jesus in my heart because I felt the necessity of Him in my life. My life was empty and in disorder. I used to think God was a distant being. Now I see Him close to me. Now He is in my heart, in my life. Everything has changed. I thought I was not important to anyone. I was depressed, dirty, unkempt and socially awkward. Now I know that I am so important — important enough for Jesus to die for. I feel like a real person. I feel so happy and joyful.”

— Lucho, Young Life Capernaum camper, Lima, Peru

“I didn’t see what I was going to do at camp [as an adult guest] for a whole week! I wasn’t excited about going. But you get up there and it really is the best week of your life. It was eye opening to see Christians having that much fun and how they reached out to non-churched kids.”

— Ken Willms, now a volunteer leader, Spokane, Wash.

statistics have been collected. In several cases, ministries have a much longer history than these data would suggest. Young Life has been active in multicultural communities, with kids with disabilities and internationally for more than 40 years.

groups are shown here in the high school category. This can cause a greater fluctuation of middle school numbers from year to year.9 Includes leaders accompanying campers and Young Life Expeditions; international camping does not differentiate between school year and summer camping.

“Senses are powerful tools. Scripture is full of appeals for us to not only think upon, but sense the goodness of God. From Jesus’ invitation to ‘come and see,’ to His declaration that ‘whoever has ears, let them hear,’ the Bible makes it clear that our experience with God is more than just cerebral. This tangible relationship is what we want even more kids to embrace, and why we’re reaching out to a million more kids all around the world. Through God’s provision, faithful donor support, and the unflagging commitment of staff, leaders and committee, we expect 2011 will be our greatest year yet in reaching kids.”
