Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) was the first Russiancomposer to gain international fame. ---- He also hada remarkable gift for writing melody. Tchaikovsky isoften described as a composer of music that isbasically melancholy. Some of his music ismelancholy, especially the last movement of hisSymphony No. 6. Yet, he also wrote spirited music,as in Marche Slave and "1812" overture; lyricalmusic, as in the symphonic poem Romeo and Juliet;lively ballet music, as in the Nutcracker Suite; andpowerful symphonies.

But Tchaikovsky always claimed to be fully Russian inhis feelings, and his works contain quotations fromRussian folk melodies.

On the other hand, he cited Mozart, a Westerner, andMikhail Glinka, a Russian, as the composers whoinfluenced him the most.

He was a master of orchestration with a superb talentfor blending instrumental sounds and for achievingrousing orchestral effects.

His early emotional sensitivity developed into longperiods of depression, but he wrote some of his mostcheerful music during these periods.

From 1862 to 1866, he studied music at the St. Petersburg Conservatory under Anton Rubinstein,a pianist and composer.
