Who is the greatest genius of all time? As a scientist, I believe that we should first define what genius is toanswer that question. Traditionally, it is the ability to bemore creative and skilled than anyone else, or the firstto glimpse new shores of knowledge. The history ofscience and technology is rich with great minds, but whois the greatest? For me, it is close between Einstein andNewton, but in Newton's time, there were not manypeople doing science. However, at the start of the20th century, when Einstein was working, there were lotsof other great scientists such as Paul Dirac, WenerHeisenberg, Niels Bohr and several others. Evenamongst them, Einstein was considered special. Somepeople may say this is a lazy choice, but I have thoughtlong about it, and I feel it is right. The three theories thathe published in four papers are some of the greatestideas ever to come out of the human mind – he provedthat atoms exist with his paper on Brownian motion, discovered the fact that light is made up of packets ofenergy, and the whole field of cosmology and most ofmodern astronomy were born from Einstein's GeneralTheory of Relativity. He changed forever the way weunderstand our Universe. Even now, when we talk aboutthe possibility of a big idea changing science, we say"we need another Einstein".

It is clear from the passage that in order to be agenius, one needs to ----.

have the necessary traits that allow him or her to bemore innovative and talented than others

come up with papers which can lead to remarkablescientific breakthroughs

be the one with the highest level of understanding of ascientific subject

Why does the author nominate Einstein instead ofNewton as the greatest genius of all time?

Newton failed to make a difference when compared toother scientists of his time no matter howsignificant his works and findings were.

Einstein earned a reputation as the most special oneof the great geniuses of his time while Newton did nothave many competitors.

Einstein had the privilege of collaborating with some ofthe most successful scientists of his period, including Dirac, Heisenberg and Bohr.

Einstein seems to have been more industrious with thetheories he developed while Newton was not veryinventive.

Einstein, with his papers, contributed a lot more to theway we see the Universe than Newton.

Scientists say "we need another Einstein" when ----.

they talk about the existence of atoms, as it wasproved by one of the theories proposed by Einstein

they make reference to one of the ideas presented inthe General Theory of Relativity

there is a need for some vision that is supposed tomake a substantial change in science

Growing state intervention in education has been, inpart at least, a response to globalization. Increasingglobal integration has at least partially demolished thewalls around national economies and made it moredifficult for governments to protect industries againstforeign competition. One of the few ways in whichgovernments can increase the internationalcompetitiveness is through investment in humans byputting resources into education and training. Thisparticularly applies to the old industrial societies. Theirtraditional manufacturing industries cannot compete withthose of developing countries where labour costs are farlower. This also applies to clerical work and dataprocessing. The industrial societies can compete onlyby upgrading their skills and improving their knowledgeand experience. This also means that it is the morehighly educated members of these societies who willflourish. According to a study, those who can only doroutine production and service work will lose out, while itis the highly educated 'symbolic analysts' ─ scientists, consultants, engineers, financial experts, and all thosewho can manipulate oral and visible symbols ─ whoseskills and knowledge are in global demand. Theimplication is that inequality will be more related to thelevel of education than ever before.

Why do governments invest more in education andtraining?

To take the education system under control

To provide a healthy integration of the society with therest of the world

To be able to compete with other nations

To help stop the globalization process

To avoid the impact of successful companies fromrival countries

Australia experienced the worst and most consistentperiod of drought in its recorded history over much ofthe past decade. The Murray River failed to reach thesea for the first time ever in 2002. Fires swept much ofthe country, and dust storms covered major cities fordays. Australia's sheep population dropped by 50percent, and rice and cotton production collapsed insome years. The drought ended in 2010 with heavyrains and flooding. Australia's Millennium Drought is awake-up call for residents of the drought-plaguedsouthwestern US where droughts have devastatingconsequences to the region and to the nation. TheUS can avoid the worst, however, if they pay attention toAustralia's experience and learn the right lesson. BothAustralia and the US have dry regions where thirstycities and irrigated agriculture are exhausting watersupplies and damaging ecosytems. The Colorado Riverno longer flows to the sea in most years. Changingglobal climate in both countries increases the risk ofdrought. As the climate continues to change, smartwater planning may help ease the impacts ofunexpected and severe droughts in the US that nowappear inevitable.

As a result of Australia's Millennium Drought, ----.

people were not able to cope with heavy rains andflooding

more people began to utilize the Murray River

the government came up with plans to restore water

fires and dust storms triggered the climate change

there was a sharp decline in livestock and agriculturalproduction

It is clear from the passage that the southwesternUS ----.

has already taken some precautions for theanticipated drought

bears certain resemblance to some parts of Australiain their proneness to climatic devastation

is likely to experience a more severe drought whencompared to Australia

is luckier than Australia in terms of geographicalcharacteristics

tries to make the Colorado River flow to the sea again

Which of the following can be inferred from thepassage?

The US inevitably experiences the impacts ofa drought despite their smart water planning systems.

If the US does not collaborate with Australia, it maynot recover from the approaching drought.

The US seems to be ignorant of the warningsconcerning a possible drought.

The US should produce effective solutions to droughtsince its climate is more threatening than that ofAustralia.

One positive outcome of the Millennium Drought isthat it can call public attention to climate change.

What is the main purpose of the passage?

Revealing the basic similarities between the MurrayRiver and the Colorado River

Criticising the reluctance of the US to take action toprevent a possible drought

Pointing to the need for the US to take lessons fromthe drought in Australia

Emphasizing the disastrous effects of the droughtexperienced in Australia

Explaining how to save limited water supplies andecosystems destroyed in both Australia and the US

Greenland faces a great risk of losing substantialamounts of its glaciers, which could result in more sealevel rise. One of these immense glaciers that drain thevast Greenland ice sheet has recently begun to retreat. It could eventually contribute half a metre to sea levelrise. Some of Greenland's glaciers rest in deep fjords, and as the water warms, their leading edges melt. Theice within them is also moving towards the sea faster ─so more is being dumped in the sea. The process beganwith the vast Jakobshavn glacier in the west, followed bythe Petermann and Humboldt in the north. Recently, ithas been announced that the Zachariæ Isstrøm glacierin the north-east began to retreat in 2012 and its flowtowards the sea has also accelerated. "Now it'sunstable and it's going to retreat even more," saysJeremie Mouginot of the University of California. Thenext glacier to the north, Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden, couldfollow suit. The floating ice shelf that protects it isthinning and could soon be lost. Most of the ice shelvesin the seas around Greenland have alreadydisappeared. "The melt will add millimetres to sea levelsover the coming decades," says Mouginot.

It is clearly stated in the passage that Greenland'sglaciers ----.

have slowed down their movement towards sea

started to melt first with Petermann and Humboldtglaciers

have caused an increase in sea levels because ofmelting

have begun to melt from the middle to the edges

used to rest in fjords before they moved towards thesea

Imagine a world where every child owns a microscope.A clever new method to fold a single sheet of paper tocreate a microscope may bring that dream closer toreality. In the Foldscope, invented by Stanford Universityengineers, folded paper creates a structure, which holdsa lens and a LED in alignment. As users look, adjust thelens and change the focus, they can magnify objectsmore than 2,000 times with this simple, affordable andeasily portable assembly. This level of magnification isclose to what you can achieve with most laboratorymicroscopes. Leading developer Manu Prakashoriginally saw the Foldscope as an inexpensive way todiagnose diseases in developing countries. But he soonrealized it could also help excite a new generation ofscientists. "You learn to appreciate the microscopicworld by actually exploring it yourself," he says. Theinventors launched a beta test to see how the inventionworks in real practice. More than 11,000 applicants from130 countries – ranging from six-year-olds to scientistsnominated for the Nobel Prize – volunteered to use theFoldscope for an original research project. They plan tostudy bee parasites and identify micro-fossils.Reproducing those experiments may inspire students tomake their own discoveries. If only every biology bookhad a Foldscope as the last page because we are notjust imparting knowledge, but we are also imparting thetools to gain that knowledge.

It is stated in the passage that the Foldscope ----.

is an original method to fold paper that children mightfavour

is a new kind of magnifier that can also work without alens or a LED

is an easy-to-carry microscope whose primary materialis paper

can magnify objects better than many microscopesused in laboratories

can also be created by children as it has quite asimple design

It is clear from the passage that Manu Prakash ----.

believes that the Foldscope might soon replace theclassical microscopes in laboratories

initially considered the Foldscope as a cheap way ofdetecting diseases

devised the Foldscope to help the new generation ofscientists who look for excitement

invented the Foldscope as he was highly interested inmicroscopic world

thinks that students are inspired by the scientists whoare candidates for the Nobel Prize

It is pointed out in the passage that ----.

the beta test showed that the Foldscope couldwork well in real practice

a remarkable variety of people were willing to use theFoldscope in their studies

the Foldscope produces the most reliable results inthe study of bee parasites or micro-fossils

scientists nominated for the Nobel Prize helpedthe six-year-olds to use the Foldscope in the beta test

many similar experiments were reproduced to see theefficiency of the Foldscope

The author is of the opinion that the Foldscope ----.

needs to be greatly improved to be used in originalresearch projects

should go beyond biology books and used inlaboratories to make detailed studies like those onmicro-fossils

has become very popular just because the scientistsnominated for the Nobel Prize have been using it

Many districts in Arizona are considering thepossibility of lowering the age of partialresponsibility to 12 due to the increase in thenumber of crimes committed by criminals under theage of 14.

Many local authorities in Arizona are thinking oflowering the age of partial responsibility to 12 in orderto prevent crimes committed by criminals under theage of 14.

Crimes committed by those under the age of 14 arebecoming more common, and thus many localities inArizona are thinking of lowering the age of partialresponsibility to 12.

The possibility of lowering the age of partialresponsibility to 12 is being discussed in many regionsof Arizona because of the immensely growing numberof crimes committed by 14-year-old individuals.

The increasing number of criminals under the age of14 has led to an agreement in localities in Arizona tolower the age of partial responsibility to 12.

Criminals under the age of 14 are committing morecrimes than ever before, which will probably force theauthorities in Arizona to consider lowering the age ofpartial responsibility to 12.

The discipline ofaeroecology explores how animals, plants and otherorganisms live in, move through and interact withthe aerosphere. ---- Instruments are now so precisethat these technical observations can spot a singlebee at about 45 km away.

How animals are sensing, using and adapting tochanges in atmospheric conditions is not interestingfor some people.

A whole world of invisible creatures inhabit theaerosphere, which contains more than 100,000 living things.

Air, as an environment, can lead to surprisinginteractions between living and non-living things.

People strive for success, which motivates them tocontinuously strive for greater achievements. However, the strength of this motivation can varygreatly from person to person. ---- People lackingself-confidence tend to give up on a task muchsooner than people with a strong belief in their ownabilities. People's levels of motivation are alsoconnected to their beliefs concerning the causes ofevents.

Among other things, it depends on the value anindividual places on his or her own performance.

While some sources of motivation are biological anddirectly promote survival, others are learned.

Because emotions can both trigger and maintainbehaviour, they are motivators of human actions.

External incentives also act as a motivator for a certaintype of behaviour or action.

The concept of motivation explains why people striveto achieve particular goals.

For thousands of years, man and wolf have beentogether as allies and companions. A naturalinstinct that bonds them still exists. Drawing onhuman interactions with wolves, a team of doctorscame up with wolf therapy to work towards repairingthe empathy and self-esteem deficits among youngadults. ---- The progress they make buildstheir motivation to complete the program andreduces the risk of reverting back to old harmfulhabits.

Wolves have been rescued from dire circumstances, including abuse, neglect and abandonment.

The way that interpersonal attraction develops isrelated partly to how we select a mate. Typically, men prefer women with the classic shapely bodyfigure, probably because it signifies youthfulness, good health and fertility. However, there are culturaland ecological influences. ---- In modern Westernsocieties, where heaviness may indicate ill health, men prefer slimmer women.

In the United States, a woman's physical beauty isconsidered to be an ultimately important factor inpartner-choosing.

In traditional agricultural societies, being thin maymean having a serious disease, so men prefer theirwomen to be heavier.

If a woman lacks fertility in Far Eastern societies, thismay deter men from choosing her as a wife.

Youthful appearance, body and facial symmetry haveall become points of interest for American men.

Traditional societies have the conception that goodgenes cannot find their place in heavy bodies, whichcause women to lose youthfulness.
