Silver celebration for IHCCalf Scheme fundraiser
TC210509DT01OUR greatest ever All Black may be about to become Sir Colin Meads, but that didn’t stop him throwing a footy about with a few youngstersat yesterday’s 25th birthday of the PGG Wrightson IHC Calf Scheme at the IHC Tarr Road farm in Kaipaki.
Farmer’s know how to throw a party — andwhat better excuse than the 25th birthday of thePGG Wrightson IHC Calf Scheme.
To mark the occasion, IHC threw a party forcalves with a huge silage cake — and 25 candles,of course — at the IHC Tarr Road farm inKaipaki.
For 25 years New Zealand dairy farmers havebeen raising calves and PGG Wrightson hasbeen helping to sell them to raise money forpeople living with intellectual disability. Sincethe Calf Scheme started, IHC has received over$20 million from 100,000 calves.
No red carpet affair is complete withoutcelebrities — and Calf Scheme patron Colin‘Pinetree’ Meads was on hand along with one ofthe driving forces in New Zealand agriculture,PGG Wrightson chairman Craig Norgate.
The celebrations included chances forattendees to win gumboots prizes.
IHC marked the 25th anniversary with thelaunch of an agricultural scholarship which willenable a young person with an intellectualdisability to train for a career in the ruralsector.
The scholarship will be supported by the IHCFoundation and delivered through an educa-tional service provider.
IHC will be announcing detail and calling forapplications for the scholarship later this year.
The idea behind the Calf Scheme wasdreamed up by Taranaki farmer Norm Cash-more, who offered a pair of gumboots to everyfarmer donating a calf to the Taranaki branch ofIHC.
Blenheim dairy farmer Mick Murphy heard
about Norm’s efforts. He travelled north to seethe idea in action and decided it would worknationally.
It was an unusual idea to ask farmers to raisea calf and donate the proceeds to IHC — and atfirst the IHC national fundraising committeeneeded some convincing. But the idea turnedout to be inspired and the scheme was launchedin 1984.
Colins Meads is very proud of the contri-bution dairy farmers have made.
‘‘I always think they are the most generouspeople in the world. They have been doing theirbit for a long time for people with disabilities inNew Zealand.’’
He says the best part about it is that themoney raised goes directly back into providingservices in rural communities.

Show represents money well spentI have just had the pleasure of attending
yet another very entertaining productionat The Woolshed Theatre.
Coral Taylor has done it again. ShirleyValentine is a superb story that a greatmany of us can relate to at some time orother.
Sas Hurst was so convincing in her roleas Shirley Valentine. Being a one personplay, how on earth did she learn all herlines.
The auditorium was so quiet during herperformance, only because we didn’t wantto miss a word of what she was saying.
We laughed inside and had smiles onour faces.
Thank you to Talos, Coral Taylor, SasHurst and the crew behind the scenes.
I urge your readers to see this pro-duction. Money well spent.

Shirley Valentinemuch appreciated
We wish to enthusiasticallyexpress our appreciation for theproduction of Shirley Valentinenow showing at The Woolshedin Te Awamutu.
We are privileged to have TeAwamutu Light OperaticSociety, Coral Taylor and hercrew, with talent and energy toonce again present an excellentshow.
We were there Tuesdaynight and for nearly two hoursSas Hurst, alias Mrs JoeBradshaw, brilliantlycaptivated her audience withher skills — humour, cleardiction and clever presentationof the former ‘Shirley Valen-tine’ longing to get out.BEV HARKER, KAY MOIR,

SeniorNet worthy ofgreater support
As a user of SeniorNet in TeAwamutu I am disgusted withthe businesses who have turneddown requests for donations.
It is not as though they areasking for thousands — anylittle amount would do.
It is a voluntary organisa-tion for the elderly, beingtaught one on one how to use acomputer.
The patience of our tutors,
who have to repeat the samething time after time until wefinally understand, is appreci-ated.
They also do this on a volun-tary basis. No wages for them. The rent, power and phone stillhave to be paid.
Come on Te Awamutu, putyour hands in your pocket andhelp this worthy cause out.

World record holder Earthraceheading for Kawhia Wharf
TC210509SP16EARTHRACE during her World record breaking journey last year.
The amazing New Zealandbuilt and skippered 100%biofuelled Earthrace powerboatsmashed the previously British-held Round the World SpeedRecord by almost two weeks inJune last year.
Now, she’s arrived home inNew Zealand and will be inKawhia on Wednesday next week(May 27) where she will be open tothe public, and the crew will be onhand to talk about the adventuresand challenges they’ve facedalong the way.
Earthrace will be at KawhiaWharf from 10am-6pm and open tothe public (donations: adults $5,children $2.50, family $10).
It has been almost three yearssince she left New Zealand, andher crew have had a roller-coasterride of adventures and challengessince then.
This is reflected in the boat
itself, which these days resemblesmore a battle scarred warriorthan a princess.
Bullet holes, gouges from logs, and damage from an accident ofthe Guatemalan coast have all lefttheir mark on this amazing,storm-hardened vessel.
More than 180,000 people havewalked onto to her decks duringher world tour, and the story ofher volunteer crew and theirjourney to promote renewablefuels and sustainable living hasbeen seen by millions on TVnetworks, and in newspapers andmagazines around the globe.
The boat broke the 10-year-oldworld circumnavigation recordusing only biofuel fromsustainable sources as a way ofdrawing attention to, and fuellingdebate about, renewable fuels.
Earthrace broke the previousrecord, held by British boat, Cable
and Wireless Adventurer, byalmost two weeks when shecrossed the finish line in Spain at12.24GMT on June 27, 2008.
The team took just 60 days 23hours and 49 minutes to completethe world’s longest speed chal-lenge of almost 24,000 nauticalmiles.
The boat and her crew had toovercome many obstacles includ-ing huge storms, replacing a pro-peller in Singapore, losing anengine in the middle of the ocean, fuel leakages, a huge backlog oftraffic in the Panama Canal and adepressing journey through anoffshore rubbish dump in theNorth Pacific.
After next Wednesday’s stopoff in Kawhia, Earthrace willcontinue on her tour around NewZealand.
For the full itinerary visit thewebsite www.earthrace.net.

JPS welcome newcomer, host trainingThe ranks of local Justices of thePeace available in the CBD duringbusiness hours have been swelledby 50% with the swearing in ofSue Thorsen, from AlvernaFashions.
She joins other businessidentities Norris Ward and ChrisSmith in the role.
The Te Awamutu JudicialPanel hosted its Ministerialcolleagues to a Training Court onMay 14.
President Bill Fullerton waskeen to have the Ministerial mem-bers, who deal with documentarywork, get an insight into the workdone by their colleagues in Court.
The local Justices welcomed
colleagues from Hamilton, includ-ing Waikato JPs presidentGraeme Kitto.
They were privileged to haveJudge Harland as their ‘mentor’for the evening and her commentsabout case content and decisionstaken were very useful
Three scenarios covering dif-ferent types of hearings wereworked through, two using a role-play from scripts supplied by theTraining Officer and anotherwhich was dramatised by MurrayLoewenthal from an actual case.
Te Awamutu Judicial Course‘trainees’, Paul L’Huillier andSusie Hall, played JP roles to givethem some experience of what it
will be like when they fill thoseseats in earnest.
Several Ministerial memberstook roles as counsel, witnessesand defendants (the presidentfilled one of the latter roles quiteably)
Each case generated much dis-cussion about points of law andprocedure. An apposite commentfrom a Ministerial member wasappreciated — ‘‘Gee! You peoplehave to know so much!’’
The JPs were grateful to JudgeHarland for her support and alsoto local Deputy Registrar, JaneBain and Prosecutor, Senior Ser-geant Peter Formosa for theiressential assistance.

Show Review
Cabaret not all fun-filled glitz and glamourBY DEAN TAYLOR
TC210509SP13OUR GIRL: Te Awamutu Courier graphic designer Rachael Somerville (seated front)in her role as a Kit Kat Klub dancer.
If you love theatre you are spoiled forchoice at present.
Talos’ well received ‘Shirley Valentine’continues until this Saturday night, TeAwamutu College’s ‘Big Al’ opens nextWednesday and a short drive northMusikmakers present the wonderful‘Cabaret’ at Hamilton’s Riverlea Theatreuntil Saturday, May 30.
Congratulations have to go to directorJane Bennett and the Musikmakers cast andcrew for taking on, and succeeding, such aniconic production.
‘Cabaret’ is one of those musicals mademore famous by a film, in this case atremendous film with Liza Minnelli in thelead.
But it is a Broadway classic, based on abook, play and stories exploring theundercurrents and growing unease amid theexciting turmoil of Berlin in the 1930’s.
‘Cabaret’ is a dark story, with plenty ofhumour, sex and scandal — but always thegrowing Nazi threat underlies the actionthat affects the main characters.
Musikmakers very cleverly utilise theirstage to move seamlessly from scene to scene— and with a top cast, band and crew it isboth highly entertaining and moving.
The show was considered hard hittingand controversial in its day, andMusikmakers interpretation continues thattheme.
The story builds around relationships: ayoung American writer and an English
nightclub dancer (and their Nazi friend), amiddle-aged German landlady and a GermanJewish shop owner.
Much of the action takes place in thefamous Berlin Kit Kat Klub — whereeveryone is beautiful — and the musical isheld together by the club’s Emcee.
All these roles are crucial, and
Musikmakers have an abundance of talenton show to fill them.
Just as important is the support, andagain the dancing, singing and acting talentmakes this memorable.
With the excellent band, wonderful setand hospitality of Musikmakers a night at‘cabaret’ is a night to remember.

Parawera, Pirongia, Pokuru and Pukeatua all had 18, followed byNgahinapouri on 17.

School friends have plentyin common 50 years on

TC210509SP12KELMAN WINERY in New South Wales’ Hunter Valley was home for a week for eight schoolmates.
When a small group of closeschool friends met up at lastyear’s Pekerau School reunion itset off a chain of events whichlead to a great week in the livesof eight women.
The women who hadattended Pekerau School werepart of a group of friends thathad become firmly attached atTe Awamutu Intermediate andthrough their Te Awamutu Col-lege years. The other girls hadattended Te Awamutu and Kihi-kihi Primary Schools.
This year they were all turn-ing 60, so the contacts were madeto get all eight ‘girls’ backtogether for a momentous hol-iday to celebrate their 60th yearsand their long-lastingfriendships.
Lorraine Roigard and RosalieCoupland had made their livesand homes in Te Awamutu,Jocelyn Hartstone and KayJames were on either coast fromTe Awamutu, Christine Storyand Kathy Elley had movedsouth and Sue Meeke made theCaribbean her home.
But for a wonderful reunionCarol Horton’s home soundedidyllic — she lived on KelmanWinery’s vineyard inAustralia’s Hunter Valley.
Mrs Horton rented the homenext to her’s for a week in April, hired a people mover and herseven friends descended uponher for a week of reminiscingand re-establishing friendships.
Mrs Coupland says it wasamazing how everyone got on sowell, for some after so manyyears.
She says the woman had keptin touch in varying degrees, so itwas great to catch up on storiesabout family and what they hadbeen doing in person.
And the location meant theywere able to indulge in some oftheir other passions, includingdrinking wine, fine dining, eat-ing chocolate and shopping.
The group celebrated acombined 60th at the awardwinning Verandah restaurant, which went all out to make them
welcome, plus got invites tovarious events and tastings inthe valley.
For the eight women whohave known each other for 50years or more it was the bestway to celebrate theirfriendships and 60 years ofexperiences.

Girlie star of Waikato hockeycentennial celebrations
TC210509SP17CUTTING the cake at Waikato Hockey Associationcentennial were Girlie Quin, her daughter Pauline Quinand president of Waikato Hockey, Seddon Polglase.
TC210509SP18GIRLIE QUIN showed she could still hit a hockey ball at95 when she hit off to launch the centennial celebrationgame at Gallagher Hockey Centre in Hamilton.
Over 75 years ago Girlie Quin (nee Bell) wasa dynamic goal-scoring wing for Waipa andAuckland provincial representative hockeyteams.
At the recent Waikato Hockey Centenarycelebrations, Girlie (now a Freeman Courtresident) was a special guest.
She cut the centennial cake and picked up ahockey stick again to hit off the festival match. Her enthusiasm and touch had clearly notdeserted her, much to the admiration of thelarge crowd.
In her heyday Girlie combined with hergood friend Rene Spiers to torment oppositionteams, both locally and at provincial level.
They used the skills honed in club play, including games played on the Spiers’ familyfield at Paterangi.
Girlie still clearly recounts them alsotrekking off by rail or bus to nationaltournaments in Invercargill and Gisborne inthe mid 1930s.
Her personality and social skills wereseemingly evident not only in hockey. She wasbefriended by Princess Te Puea Herangi andinvited to assist with her fledgling communitywork programme at Ngaruawahia.
That move never eventuated — marriage toBrian brought a family and saw them farmingon the Pirongia Road.
More recently Girlie learned to play bridgeand, with her brother Putt, became an accom-plished angler at Lake Arapuni.
She would often share her catch withfriends and passing tourists.
The generosity of spirit and enthusiasm forlife, which have characterised Girlie’s lifeover 95 years, are still very evident today.

Benefi t of working longer There’s a very good reason to retire
later - scientists have found that work-ing a few years beyond retirement could help stave off Alzheimer’s disease.
Experts from King’s College London analysed data from more than 1,300 people with dementia. They considered factors including education, employment and retirement.
Researchers found that people who retired later were able to avoid the mind-robbing Alzheimer’s disease longer than people who retired earlier.
Each extra year of work was associ-ated with approximately a six-week de-lay in the onset of dementia.
The study was published in the Inter-national Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry.
“The intellectual stimulation that older people gain from the workplace may prevent a decline in mental abilities, thus keeping people above the threshold for dementia for longer,” says Simon Love-stone, one of the paper’s co-authors.
But Lovestone acknowledged thatdoctors still did not fully understand howto delay or prevent dementia.
Previous studies have suggestedmore education may lower dementiarisk. Other experts says more researchis needed to confi rm the fi ndings.
“There could be a number of reasonswhy later retirement in men is linkedwith later onset of dementia,” says Su-zanne Sorensen, head of research atthe Alzheimer’s Society.
She says men who retire early mighthave done so because of health prob-lems like high blood pressure or diabe-tes, which increases dementia risk.
“It could also be that working helpskeep your mind and body active, whichmay reduce risk of dementia.”

People who visit Camellia Rest-home are impressed by the ‘homeliness and friendly family atmosphere’.
Owner Glenn Ripley says consistently high standards and the wonderful staff are responsible for that.
“We pride ourselves on a standard of care that is second to none.”
Activities co-ordinator Sue Sander says an activity plan is prepared for all residents to cater for their individual needs, taking the residents background and outside interests into account.
“We want the residents to feel that this is their home away from home. Sometimes this can be diffi cult when you have many residents with different needs, personalities and ideas.
“The majority of the residents feel it is their home, they respect one another’s privacy, but also enjoy the social contact around the different activity times and outings. Friendships are made from within the home between residents.
“Families are also made to feel as part of the home environment. A regular newsletter for families and residents helps them keep in touch with activities and changes within the resthome.
“We also endeavor to make sure that each new resident can continue with their groups or clubs that they are already involved in.”
Camellia runs a number of in-house programmes - games, quiz sessions, music, bowls and art classes.
Regular visitors to the resthome include entertainers, ministers, ‘friends of Camellia’ and Pets for Love - the residents enjoy animal visits.
Camellia Resthome residents take part in an interhouse resthome bowls competition and look forward to the annual resthome games.
Regular outings to shows and community events are organised.Special occasions are alwayscelebrated and shared with the residents and family members.
When residents prefer to have
some time to themselves they can retreat with a book to the ‘quiet lounge’, watch TV or spend time on their hobbies.
New resident Edna Perry sums it up...
“I couldn’t get better care - I’m well looked after and it always seems like cup of tea or meal time!
“There’s plenty to do - Sue runs an excellent activities programme, yet I can still maintain my indepen-dence.”

“I have tried everything, weight watchers, Jenny Craig, all the pills and potions but I have never had any discipline with food. I would eat food for comfort because I had constant pain and I was sleep deprived.”“I was desperate with my pain and I was willing to try any-thing. When I saw the Body Buzz advertisement in the Cou-rier I thought I had nothing to lose by giving it a try.”
My Life has been turned around mentally and physically.
“It’s been 4 weeks now and I have never looked back. The Vibration Training machines at Body Buzz have been won-derful for my joints and for my energy. Bowen Therapy with Gaye and Emotional Freedom Technique with Marty have complemented the whole thing. My life has been turned around mentally and physically. I feel bright and I am pleas-ant to be with again.”“I do my Vibration Training and I follow Marty’s Nutrition Plan and I have no problem with it whatsoever. I was a ‘Café girl’ I loved my muffi ns but I have never touched one since I started here and I don’t feel the urge to eat those things anymore.”“Self esteem has gone from rock bottom to being content with myself and my achievements.”
I wish people would try it.
“I have Chronic Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fybromyalgia, Chron-ic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and a cocktail of drugs which I have halved since doing Body Buzz. I’m going to see my Doctor today about cutting down on another one.”“In 4 weeks I’ve lost 5.5 kg of body fat and 8.5cms off my waist and it hasn’t been hard.”“I really look forward to my training which I do every day. You’ve got to realize that this is not like a workout in a gym. It only takes 12 minutes and you can walk in off the street in whatever you’re wearing.”“I wish people would try it because it’s given me a new lease on life and there are many other people here who will tell you the same thing.”

Freeman Court on Roche Street is a community facility which pro-vides a supported living environ-ment for residents.
Manager Elsie Anderson says their aim is to promote independ-ence for residents for as long as possible.
“Freeman Court is not a rest home, but a unique facility in that it is classifi ed as a boarding house for the independent elderly - a stepping stone between a person’s home and a rest home.
“People who come here do not qualify for rest home care. Howev-er, although basically independent, they and their families have found that they need a little extra assist-ance, security and support that Freeman Court can offer.
“It also provides peace of mind that staff assistance is available 24 hours.”
Freeman Court has a qualifi ed diversional therapist on staff. Erin Lyford offers a wide and varied activities programme for the 44 residents, who range in age from 67-99.
There are always a number of special events and occasions cel-ebrated as well, while the busy craft group creates items for the hugely popular annual gala day.
For more information about Free-man Court see the Elder Net web-site (www.eldernet.co.nz) or con-tact Freeman Court (ph 871 5260).

Marist thump HinueraTe Awamutu Marist were clearly the
more motivated team in their Waikatosecond division rugby clash with Hinuera, winning 39-0 at Marist Park on Saturday.
The Murray Gane Plumbing sponsoredside were determined to bounce back fromtheir first defeat of the season the previousweek against Te Akau, who had beaten themin the 2008 final.
They started well and were hot on attackfrom the kick off.
Bill Ngauma kicked an early penaltyfollowed by a try to centre Aaron Tahakurafor the home team to lead 10-0 in as manyminutes.
Barnstorming hooker Johnny Gisbornedotted down next after a strong burstthrough the Hinuera defence.
Marty Rogers and Ben Parkinson scoredfurther tries before half time, with Rogersconverting two and Ngauma one for a 29-0lead to the home side at the break.
Marist scored two second half tries, thefirst to replacement winger Lance Pakehowith Tahakura getting his second after a finekick and chase effort.
Coach Shane Crutchley would have beenhappy with the scoreline, but concernedwith the high penalty count against his sidein the second half with an away gameagainst Hamilton Old Boys this Saturday.
Backs to impress were Tahakura,Ngauma and Cori Ohutu, with Gisborne andJosh Hewlett having strong games up front.
Wooly’s Restaurant and Bar player of theday was Gisborne.
Share of soccer successTe Awamutu Reserve
Team welcomed new clubVoyle Park Rangers to theirfirst taste of soccer at theStadium on Saturday andcontinued their improvementwith a well won 2-0 victory.
First goal was set up byrecently returned player AlexConnor, who skipped past thevisitors’ left back and put in aquality low drive that foundOctave Ibuonga waiting toside-foot the ball into the net.
The second goal was a wellstruck shot from 20 metresout taken by Connor.
In less than idealconditions, the second halfwas a tighter affair and theReserves worked hard tomaintain their first cleansheet for keeper Ray McCabe.
Printhouse Te AwamutuMen’s Third Team travelledto Cambridge looking to con-tinue their improvement andcame away sharing the pointsin a 1-1 result.
Lee Mallet opened thescoring in what was as aphysical encounter. Cam-bridge equalised late in thegame.
In their first home game ofthe season, the under 17s
entertained local supportersin a stimulating game againstWhakatane.
The young local ladsshowed great character andcommitment for the gamewith some standout perform-ances. On a wet surface theyplayed controlled football andwere rewarded with a 2-1 win, goals going to Aaron Kellyand Brandon Gross.
Waikato Cakes SeniorWomen went to Matamataafter last week’s loss aimingto get back on track.
Megan-lee Carrington’sfree kick into the penalty areawas latched onto by MelanieBethall who slotted the ballhigh into the net.
After a Matamata equal-iser early in the second half,Te Awamutu sparked intoaction again with AnnemarieSpraggs’ goal securing a 2-1win. Player of the day was leftback Laura Christian.
Furniture Court Te Awa-mutu Women’s Reserves’unbeaten start to the seasoncame to an abrupt end with a5-0 away loss to WaikatoUnicol B. Player of the daywas sweeper Kathryn Powellfor her solid performance.
