Te Rautaki Reo o Ngāti KoataIn September 2014 the Ngāti Koata Cultural Revitalisation and Te Reo Māori Needs Survey showed:

• 85% stated that te reo Māori is ‘an important cultural need for Ngāti Koata’.

• 67% stated that te reo Māori is ‘very important to me’.

• 35% placed te reo Māori is their top cultural priority for Ngāti Koata (second only to whakapapa at 44%)

Summary:

• The huge majority of Ngāti Koata regard te reo Māori as important, however comprehension and communication in te reo Māori is low.

In response the Ngāti Koata Trust has embarked on a te reo Māori retention and revitalisation strategy.

Most respondents rated their reo as either:

• Can speak and understand basic tereo Māori words, or

• Can speak and understand simple tereo Māori sentences

It was pretty much evenly learnt through personal study, at home, at school and tertiary.

• The places that te reo Māori is heard most often is on the marae and through the media

• The biggest barriers were not having anyone to converse with and issues of confidence and whakamā.

• Respondents prioritised the paepae and haukāinga

• Respondents identified wānanga and online resources as areas the iwi Trust can assist NgātiKoata learn and speak te reo Māori

Defining Goals and ObjectivesWhat is a Goal?

• A goal is a broad aim/statement towards which your efforts are directed. It’s a “what,” not a “how.” It tells you where you are going rather than how you will get there. Goals need to be S.M.A.R.T (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time bound). Ie:I will lose 10kg in 10 weeks

…and then there’s objectives…

What is an Objective?

• Objectives are closely tied to goals. This is the “how.” An objective is a specific and measureable milestone that must be achieved in order to reach a goal. Some examples. Ie:By: 1. walking to work; 2. eating less Maccas; 3. go to the gym twice a week

Where to from here?This proposed strategic plan is a result of consultation with Ngāti Koata.

It requires endorsement from the Ngāti Koata Trust Board and the iwi.

Another round of consultation will be held in the near future (keepyour eyes peeled for pānui).

The “Kia Whakatū te reo” framework will then become Trust policy and any future planning/funding of te reo Māori projects will need to alignwith the goals and objectives of this plan.
