4 Major CHANGES

1) Home Vs. School

2) Began on 1980s

The technology that available at home has more impact on youth generation in term of is entertainment and education purpose than what they have at school

The widespread of technology began on 1980 onwards. Because it have positive impact on youth in society. By 2007. More government implements technology in their education system.3) Primary vs Secondary UserThe usages of instructional technology have impact on education. However, all the electronic technology was designed to home consumer market and education/classroom purpose are the secondary user.

4) 5. Convergent TechnologyFrom 1980s onwards, digitalized technology that replaced analogue technology makes easier to converge technology. Convergent technologies allows user use more than one function in technology.

3The Impact of Technology

1 The rise of Technology Devices

By 1970s

By 1980sa better personal computer spec (e.g, the release of the Apple Mac and graphical interfaces, and the burgeoning of the computer games technology) have gained significant home user and the sale of computers in the home became common.

Gaming MarketThe rapid game market segmentation particularly among youth has enhanced the sales of computer. Young people wanted computed with better power, graphic and sound capabilities’.

Early personal computer began to appeared in the late of 1970 and this technology doesn’t use by many household consumers

The vast games industry did not impact directly on the school curriculum, there is little doubt that the technological skills and confidence gained by the

young people in playing the various computer games on a range of technology made them highly adept with all manner of digital technology (Gee,

2007; Prensky, 2006).

Information Superhighway

More user-friendly and reliableMain applications software for the computers—be it for word processing, presentations, electronic communication or spreadsheets

School FacilitiesSchools in general terms averaged two computers per class or per 30 students. In reality, without a facility like a data projector or an interactive whiteboard.

Caused big boost to home computer sales and contain free web browser and popularization of e-mail

In 2007, the study by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) reconfirmed the parents’ views on the importance of having the digital technology in the home: Almost all parents see the Internet as beneficial to their children … (p. 10)

3 The development of Digital Information and Communication Technology

Communication Enhancement

Greater integration of the digital technologiesIn 2008, virtually all students not only had their own computer at home (increasingly with broadband access), have use of a flat screen TV, a CD and DVD recorder, a sound system, digital camera, an MP3 or MP4 digital player, a USB drive, multifunction phone (also with digital camera) and digital games machine

Emergence of Net GenerationYoung people who found it natural to use all manner of technology and who expected their schools to use the same kind of technology in their everyday teaching. (Don Tapscott (1998)

By 1990s, most youth in the developed nations had access in their homes to all of the instructional technology which revolutionize teaching.

Page 20: Technology of the Home

Research commissioned by the US National School Boards Association on teens’ use of the Internet, in August 2007, it reported:

1.“96 % of students with online access use social networking technologiessuch as chatting, text messaging, blogging, and visiting online communities such as Facebook, MySpace, and Webkinz. Further, students report that one of the most common topics of conversation on the social networking scene is education”

2. Nearly 60 % of online students report discussing education-related topics such as college or college planning, learning outside of school, and careers.

3. 50 % of online students say they talk specifically about schoolwork

TAPSCOTTA Canadian business executive, author, consultant and speaker, specializing in business strategy, organizational transformation and the role of technology in business and society.

Don Tapscott Born: June 1, 1947 (age 68), Toronto, CanadaEducation: Trent University, University of Alberta Tapscott identified those developments

(learning and competencies in technology) in 1998s.

Page 25: Technology of the Home

Meredyth Studies:

found the impact of the technology learning in 1998, while Prensky was

in 2006. These kinds of findings reinforced Tapscott’s 1998

observation.Students tend to acquire their advanced

information technology skills at home rather than at school.

[In 1998] 85% of students use computers outside schools … There is a significant link between students information technology skills, confidence and enjoyment, their use of

computers outside school, the level of resources in their home and their personal ownership of resources … Students who do not use a

computer outside school had relatively poor attainment of information technology skills …’

MARADYTH CONCLUDED THAT:

Page 26: Technology of the Home

Tapscott’s 1998s observation: The first time in human history the young had an understanding of

technology that surpassed that of most of their teachers

Mal Lee Wrote in an article entitled ‘Chaotic Learning: The Learning Style Of The “Net Generation”’ of The Learning Style Favoured By Young People (2000)

He said that: The young chart their own courses. Each sets his/her own goals. No teacher determines what they learn.

OBLINGERWho is him?

Elaborated Mal Lee concept in their excellent 2006 online publication, Educating the Net Generation.

Since then that approach to learning has continued to grow, clearly helped by the students’ daily use of an

ever-increasing range of digital and networked technology

3Reality of the era

Better AccessThe reality is that most students in 2008 not only had better technology and online access in their home;

More Timehad many more hours to spend using that technology than they did in the classroom

CommunicationThe combination between home-based and mobile technology allows them to use it

Page 31: Technology of the Home

The Studies of students usage of technology in home and school concludes that:

Conclusion

Page 34: Technology of the Home

Relationship of Home Technology and Education

Acceptance of TechnologyBoth teachers and students are comfortably using the technology that is available in their home

Evolution ProcessThe evolution of each technological gadgets are more likely contributing much as they give more benefits and flexibility towards the users

Teacher RoleAs the future teachers, we have make up the students’ mind that technology was invented to give benefits and could be a disaster for the wrong using of them

Positive ImpactThe technology at home brings many positives impacts towards the students, teachers and the communities.
