Jimmy and Peg MooreA Lifetime of Achievement

If you haven’t heard of Peg or Jimmy Moore then you probably need to brush up on your Temecula history. This dynamic duo played an important part in helping Temecula not only become incorporated as a city, but help lay the path for Temecula to become one of the premiere cities in the region.

Jimmy and Peg Moore were recognized as the Life Time Achievement recipients at the 44th Annual Awards Gala on Saturday, February 20. Just another one of many awards these two have received throughout the years for their service to the community.

Married for over fifty years, they moved to the area in the 80’s and knew they had found a special place in southwest Riverside county. From important players in lobbying for incorporation, to a seat on the first City Council, to the Historical Society Board and to teaching a class on the history of Temecula. Just to name a few of the highlights from this couples history in our town. We, the citizens of Temecula are lucky to have people like the Moores who care so much about their community.

The Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce (TVCC), hosted the Valley’s 44th Annual Awards Gala on Saturday, February 20 at Pechanga Resort and Casino. Coinciding with the 20th Anniversary of the City of Temecula, this year’s event celebrated the great achievements the Chamber has made in 2009, the city’s history and honored winners of the Business, Citizen and Charitable Organizations of the Year.

“Our Awards Gala was a spectacular event, with a great turnout from local businesses and dignitaries,” said Alice Sullivan, Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce President and CEO. “The Chamber would like to congratulate this year’s winners and thank them for the incredible contributions they’ve made in the community.”

In addition to the night’s business, organization and citizen awards, there was a surprise Lifetime Achievement Award presentation to Jimmy and Peg Moore who were one of the driving forces behind the incorporation of the City of Temecula and have remained an integral part of growth and success of the community’s development. Another special honor that was handed out at the gala was the Chairman’s Choice Award which went to Dennis Frank, a longtime contributor to the Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce and past president of the Southwest California Concil.

The Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce would like the thank the business community for their generosity. This year garnered a record donation item amount from local area businesses valued at over $63,000. The over 440 gala attendees enjoyed a champagne reception, dinner, awards presentation, entertainment and dancing as part of this black tie event.

The third annual Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Women in Business Forum, which took place on October 29, 2009 at Wilson Creek Winery, was a resounding success. Themed “Personal Triumphs: Women Inspiring Women,” the event drew more than 200 local area businesswomen and attendees who spent half a day browsing more than 30 booths promoting local shops, products and businesses, as well as the works of several local female artists. The art pavilion was a new feature this year, and showcased photography, watercolors, oils and drawings by a hand-picked selection of women artists from Temecula and Los Angeles.

Attendees also enjoyed a delicious lunch provided by Delytes Fine Foods, Inc. as well as a panel discussion on women’s issues moderated by Leah DiBernardo, Executive Chef of Delytes. This year, our distinguished panelists included Kathy Anselmo, Co-Founder of Our Nicholas Foundation; Sherryl Ford, CEO of Facelogic International; Jacqueline A. Howells, Principal, Howells Government Relations; and Terri Pebley, Owner, Keyways Vineyard & Winery. Guests also had the opportunity to hear the powerful, moving and inspiring comments of topic speaker Evangeline J. “Ginger” Larson, Partner at Winton Larson & Solecki LLP.

Said TVCC President Alice Sullivan, “This year’s Women in Business Forum surpassed all our expectations. We nearly doubled our attendance from the previous year and are so happy to have been able to host an event that drew such a large, diverse group of women and which hopefully inspired and empowered them to succeed in business and in life. We look forward to building upon the success of this year’s event as we turn our thoughts toward next year.”

In early January 2008, while working in my home office one morning, the phone rang. The voice on the other end began, “Mr. Huth, this is Scott Brown from Chambers and Chambers. We are a personnel search firm located in Omaha, NE. “I saw your biographic information on the

Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Web site and thought that you could help me fill a position that we have contracted with a publicly traded company on the West Coast. Do you know anyone interested in a Managerial Position that offers an attractive compensation package and an aggressive bonus program?”

Just finishing up with a 5 year stint in real estate and not enjoying it at all, I decided to jump back into Corporate America. I indicated to Scott that I knew someone who met the requirements of the position he described. Me.

I emailed him my work history and within twenty-five minutes Scott Brown called again. He said the job was right up my alley and asked if I was available to meet with the Chief Operating Officer of his client company, for a personal interview, the next day? Excitedly, I said absolutely. Well one thing lead to another and on January 31, 2008, I started my new position with Barrett Business Services, Inc (BBSI) as the AREA MANAGER.

Temecula, branded as Southern California’s wine country, is most known for its award winning wineries, panoramic vineyard views, historical Old Town, and home of Pechanga Resort and Casino. What one may not know is that the City of Temecula also hosts a cluster of prominent medical distribution/supply and biotech/biomed companies.

These businesses have been attracted to Temecula for a number of reasons including our highly skilled labor force, top notch K-12 school system (which ranks 10th out of all school districts in Riverside, Orange, and San Diego counties), close proximity to San Diego, Los Angeles, and Orange Counties, quality and affordable housing, and an exceptional quality of life. The City of Temecula is also com-mitted to providing excellent, expeditious, and clear guidance to companies located or planning to locate here throughout the development process, whether constructing a new facility or leasing.

neW form i-9Revised August 7, 2009, the new Form I-9 contains an updated list of ac-ceptable documents that employees must present upon hiring. The new form also bears a note that all documents presented to establish identity and/or ability to work in the United States must not be expired.

e-VerifY reQuireD for feDeral ContraCtorsFederal contractors and subcontractors must use the E-Verify system when hiring employees. Other employers may use the verifi cation system if they wish to do so. E-Verify compares Form I-9 document information against federal government databases to verify employment eligibility.

inCrease in state WitHHolDinGState withholding increased on November 1, 2009. There is a 10 per-cent mandatory increase on employee withholdings, a 0.6 percent in-crease in supplemental wage withholding and a 1.2 percent increase on wage stock options and bonus payments.

Support Federal Legislation shipping And continued goods movement in AmeRicA’s poRts

The Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce has expressed its support for two Federal pieces of legislation that will impact the future competitiveness and environmental soundness of the Long Beach and Los Angeles Ports and aid in the goods movement process from the Southwest California region.

H.R. 3446 provides for a competitive program making grants to seaport governing bodies for the acquisition of fuel effi cient and low-emission equipment and systems at port facilities.

H.R. 3447 would alter the funding system for the Trust Fund by taking the spending power out of the hands of Congress. H.R. 3447 will allow the funding to be used entirely and without delay by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for dredging of America’s harbors.

“H.R 3446 will further advance the effort to ensure the movement of goods through Long Beach and Los Angeles Ports in an environmentally friendly way while not impacting the bottom line of our business members,” Alice Sullivan, President and CEO of the Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce. “And, most importantly, because of the grant-making process, it enables progress without negative fi nancial consequence to the Ports that would have ultimately been passed onto businesses that utilize and depend on the Ports,” continued Sullivan.

H.R. 3446, which will be developed and administered by the Secretary of Transportation, allows harbor commissions and port authorities to apply for grants that can be used to fund projects and/or the acquisition of equipment that promote environmental, air quality, and fuel use reduction benefi ts.

H.R. 3447 will revise current protocol in which funding is subject to Congressional approval, a protocol that has resulted in funding delays as well as the reallocation of funds otherwise earmarked for the dredging and maintaining of harbors and ports to unrelated budget measures.
