Lesson 1: Strand: Oral Language; Writing

Strand Unit(s): Receptiveness to language, Competence and confidence in using language: Children discussing their news based on a summer holiday. Shared writing about the news. Revision of the song The Today Song’. Phonic work based on the letter “q” for both classes with work on capital “Q” for Senior Infants.

Lesson 2: Strand: Reading; oral language

Strand Unit: Oral: developing receptiveness to oral language. Reading: developing concepts of language and print

Read ‘Snail and whale’, led by the teacher.

Sequence the story.

Learn the new places the whale swam too; adventures.

Lesson 3: Strand: Oral language. Strand Unit: Emotional and Imaginative development through language; receptiveness to language. The children will recall previously learned rhymes; complete actions to go with the rhymes. Mixture of math rhymes and English rhymes (used as discretionary time on timetable) Rhymes based on water for this week.

Lesson 4: Strand: Reading / Oral language / Writing: Strand Unit: Emotional and imaginative development through language; receptiveness to language; developing cognitive abilities. The children will partake in station teaching with other teachers; phonemic activities with the phonemes “th” (As per class arrangements)

Lesson 1: Strand: Measure. Strand Unit: Volume / Capacity. Free play; children explore filling and emptying containers and make conclusions. Comparing; predict and guess whether amount of rice/water will fit in the other container. Lining up containers from the one that holds the most to the one that holds the least. (SI but JI will take part with differentiated worksheets at the end of active learning).

Lesson 2: Strand: Measure. Strand Unit: Volume / Capacity. Discussing more and Less. Sorting containers by their capacity. (SI and JI with differentiated worksheets at the end of active learning). Pupils guess whether the container holds more or less than a standard measure i.e. shampoo bottle. Devise ways to test their estimate by pouring from one container to the other. (cup, yogurt carton, bucket, jug). Sort into two sets. (SI). Worksheets.

Lesson 3: Strand: Measure. Strand Unit: Volume / Capacity. Non-standard units of measure (SI) JI will participate with differentiated worksheets. How many times will a cup take to fill larger container; children’s predictions. Record how many unifix cubes it takes. Compare results with predictions. Repeat with different measures. (JI) worksheets.

Lesson 4: Strand: Measure. Strand Unit: Volume / Capacity. Math Games class; teacher will use IWB and interactive games with the children; songs and rhymes.

Lesson 5: Strand: Measure. Strand Unit: Volume / Capacity. Filling Tubs Jugs and Bottles. Estimate what container holds. Using spoons, sand, rice, interlocking cubes, beads, counters. Working in pairs. One child fills the container with spoonful while the other tallies using cubes / counters. (SI) While (JI) will partake in activity with differentiated worksheets and without tallying.

Lesson 6: Lesson 5: Strand: Measure. Strand Unit: Volume. Revision of capacity and volume covered during the week, interactive WB, worksheets, rhymes.

Re-read big book / choral reading

Practice rhyming words by placing pictures of things from the story on the IWB and asking children for words that rhyme. Worksheet invent another animal snail might discover the world on.(SI) write sentences on worksheet also.

Lesson 6: Strand: Oral language. Strand Unit: Emotional and Imaginative development through language; receptiveness to language. Rhymes the children will recall previously learned rhymes and learn new rhymes: “I’m a Little Airplane” and “Lonely Bus Driver”.

Lesson 7: Strand: Reading / Oral language / Writing: Strand Unit: Emotional and imaginative development through language; receptiveness to language; developing cognitive abilities. The children will partake in station teaching with other teachers; phonemic activities with the phonemes “th” add on a letter differing activities (As per class arrangements)

Brainstorm on what to write in a letter from the whale thanking the snail for saving him and all the children in the school.

Help the teacher to write this letter.

Look at the basics of letter writing, ie: Dear, thank you etc…
