Hello There! Welcome to Temple Bar TradFest 2014.The festival, our most ambitious to date and now in its 9th year, is the capital city’s biggest Irish tra-ditional music and culture event. Over the years we’ve welcomed visitors from many destinations including France, Germany, Aus-tria, the UK, Japan, the US and all parts of Ireland; and we look forward to even bigger audiences this year. We are also delighted to welcome headline artists from around the world as well as icon-ic performers from home who will perform in some of Ireland’s most renowned heritage sites. This year’s programme of free and family events has so much to offer from our outdoor music stages to workshops, ceili, craft market, pipe bands, Gaelic games, street performers, urban farm, film screenings and so much more…. We’re really excited about this year’s programme and we hope you’ll enjoy the unique experience that is Temple Bar TradFest 2014.

Kieran HanrahanArtistic Director

It has been a great privilege of mine to be the Patron of Temple Bar TradFest for the past number of years. I’ve watched with great pride as the festival has gone from strength to strength over the years, growing in a national and interna-tional capacity. ‘This year TradFest is commemorating key events in history including the Battle of Clontarf. We’ll also be celebrating international events; Robert Burns Night and Riga, the European City Of Culture. It is a great opportunity to celebrate our heritage together with some of Ireland’s most re-nowned acts in some of Dublin’s most iconic buildings.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral is the National Cathedral of the Church of Ireland. From the simple beginnings of a small wooden church built where St. Patrick was purportedly baptised and converted to Christianity, it now hosts many national religious commemo-rations. Jonathan Swift, acclaimed satirist and author of Gulliv-er’s Travels was made Dean of St. Patrick’s in 1713. In 1191 John Comyn raised the ancient church to the status of cathedral and, since the 1530’s the choral tradition of Anglican worship was es-tablished and St. Patrick’s is the only remaining cathedral church in Ireland with a daily pattern of sung services. How fitting then, that this magnificent cathedral, at the heart of Ireland’s history and culture for over 800 years, will serve as venue for superb con-certs throughout TradFest 2014.

Núñez is one of Galicia’s most re-vered artists. He’s the undisputed master of Galicia’s signature musi-cal instrument, the gaita, or Gali-cian bagpipes. He is also enor-mously popular across the rest of Spain and throughout Europe and Latin America. Worldwide he has sold over a million albums and is well known in the Irish Music scene thanks to his early “adop-tion” by The Chieftains – he was even dubbed “The Seventh Chief-tain”. He played on many of the acclaimed group’s CDs including Treasure Island, The Long Black Veil, the Grammy-winning San-tiago (inspired by Galician music), Mexican project San Patricio, and their latest release, Voice of Ages.Núñez then launched his own solo career and built on his long list of

collaborations. His own releases featured a who’s who of interna-tional performers, starting with his 1996 debut, the aptly titled Broth-erhood of Stars, which had over 50 guests. With platinum sales in Spain, Brotherhood was a remark-able breakthrough for both Núñez and Galician music.

Stockton’s Wing & Frankie Gavin & De Dannan team up for this very special night in St. Patrick’s Cathe-dral.Stockton’s Wing formed in 1977 in Ennis Co. Clare taking their name from a Bruce Springsteen song “Backstreets.” During their career Stockton’s Wing appeared at all major folk festivals across the globe and had several hit albums touring extensively throughout the eighties and early nineties. Paul Roche, Mike Hanrahan, Tommy Hayes, Enda Schahill and Dessie Donnelly will perform at Temple Bar TradFest. For many years De Dannan were the forerunners in the Irish tra-ditional music world but after 33 years, 14 albums and a number of changes in the line-up, the group

disbanded in 2003. In August 2009, Frankie Gavin unleashed a new De Dannan line up of Michelle Lally, Barry Brady, Paul O’ Drisceoil and Colm O’ Caoimh which Frankie says “reflects a De Dannan of the 21st century”.

Paul Brady, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist is one of Ire-land’s most enduringly popular art-ists. Born and raised in Strabane, he was into a wide variety of music from an early age. Learning to play the piano by ear, by eleven he had begun to play guitar. Around 1965 in Dublin, at college, he began to develop as a singer and performer. The 60′s in Dublin saw the renewal of interest in Irish traditional mu-sic and gave birth to the first wave of Irish ballad groups like The Clan-cy Brothers, The Dubliners, Swee-ney’s Men and The Johnstons. Soon Paul became swept up in this current and joined the latter band with whom he recorded seven al-bums. In 1974 he joined Planxty, the premier Irish folk band of the early 70’s.

In the late 90′s, he began to collabo-rate with other songwriters and in the space of two years wrote nearly fifty songs. 2010 saw Paul releasing his 14th solo album, ‘Hooba Dooba’ to widespread acclaim.

Altan will commemorate the life and music of one of their founding mem-bers, Frankie Kennedy. It has been 20 years since his passing and the band want to acknowledge this with a se-ries of concerts featuring musicians and singers associated with the band and Frankie. Altan will be joined for this very special night by long time friend, Mary Chapin Carpenter. Amer-ican singer songwriter Carpenter has won five Grammy Awards and was recently inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Frankie’s vision for Altan was to keep the music pure and traditional and by backing it with modern ideas and rhythms. Frankie’s vision proved right, Altan were the first Irish traditional music band to have been signed by a major record label. Virgin signed the band in 1994 and their first release, Blackwa-

ter, coincided with the loss of Frankie to cancer at the tender age of 38 Altan have continued Frankie’s journey going from strength to strength and this year celebrate Frankie’s memory through friends & music.

Dating back to 1178, and built shortly after the arrival of the An-glo-Normans, St. Werburgh’s Church has an interesting history. Lord Edward Fitzgerald, Irish aristocrat, revolutionary and a lead-er of the United Irishmen, is buried in the grounds. Renowned composer and pianist John Field, (best known for originating the piano nocturne and the development of the Russian piano school) was baptised in the Church in 1782. Located close to Dub-lin Castle, St. Werburgh’s boasts a decorated organ and Lord Lieu-tenant’s gilded pew (c1767). This beautiful church is a stunning venue for some of Ireland’s most talented musicians.Opposite Leo Burdock’s, Werburgh Street, Dublin 2

Johnny Duhan started his career as a fifteen year old front man in the Limerick beat group Granny’s Intentions, the most popular band in Ireland in the mid to late 60s. Af-ter rousing Dublin with their soul touch, they moved to London, were signed to the prestigious Deram label, released one album and dis-banded before Johnny was 21.Johnny turned his back on the popular music industry and start-ed writing folk songs, poetry and prose. Known for his fierce in-dependence and integrity as an artist, he has condensed a body of work spanning 40 years into a quartet of epic albums – Just An-other Town, To The Light, The Voy-age and Flame. His song The Voy-age has become a modern classic. Christy Moore has termed Johnny

“One of our greatest songwriters.” Johnny’s album The Burning Word was chosen by Tony Clayton-Lea to feature in his book ‘101 Irish Al-bums You must hear Before you Die’.

‘There have been many imitators since 1984 but we are the original’ Seosaimhín Ní Bheaglaoich. The First All-Female Big-Band of traditional music are celebrating 30 years. They got together on In-ternational Women’s day 1984 to celebrate women’s creativity. Situated on Church Street behind one of Dublin’s Four Courts and near the old city fruit and vegetable markets, St. Michan’s Church is the oldest parish church in the city. Originally founded in 1095, the present church dates from 1685 and was renovated in 1825. The church retains its original galleried interior and organ.Beneath the church are the famous vaults containing the mum-mified remains of many of Dublin’s most influential 17th, 18th and 19th century families, including the legendary Sheares brothers and the highly decorated coffins of the Earl of Leitrim. Visitors can also see the famed alleged crusader, the thief and nun, and learn about the remarkable preservative qualities pres-ent in the vaults.

Her performances are intimate, emotional, uplifting affairs in which she explores soul, love and humour, using own compositions and interpretations from other songbooks, with her unique voice and beautiful playing. Formerly a session musician, she decided, whilst with The Mary Black Band, that she should develop her own career.Mary’s label owner heard Eleanor play a self-penned song that would give a name and title track to their planned all female compilation album A Woman’s Heart, Ireland’s best-selling album. The Temple Bar TradFest will host the world premiere of a specially commissioned cycle of songs com-memorating the Battle of Clontarf which span a millennium and con-tain eye witness accounts of Dub-lin from 1014 and 2014. This piece is composed by Deep End of the Ford with support from local schools and community groups from the surrounding areas of Temple Bar.Deep End of the Ford combines four of the most progressive avant-garde talents in improvised and folk music; Lorcan MacMathuna, Martin Tourish, Eoghan Neff and Seán Mac Erlaine. An improvi-sational collective, their style is based on the flexible shape of lan-guage; spoken, and sung. Their in-spiration comes from the epic de-pictions of history and mythology.

In this composition they will be joined by Norse singer and instru-mentalist Raphael De Cock.

Seth has released six albums including 2005’s Mercury-nominated Kitty Jay through to his latest album, Tales from the Barrel House, which con-firms Seth’s innate knack for writ-ing both foot-stomping sing-along songs and more tender thoughtful ballads. His fiddle and tenor guitar playing is often breathtaking and Seth’s trademark, soaring vocals are at the forefront of the album, as beguiling and haunting as ever. Dublin City Hall is an outstanding example of the Georgian ar-chitecture for which Dublin is world-renowned. The building was restored to its 18th-century appearance at the beginning of the 21st century, and Dublin City Council has won awards for the conservation of this historic building. Dublin City Hall played a great role in the Easter Rising; on Easter Monday 1916 Irish Citi-zen Army captain Sean Connolly and his company marched up Dame Street with the intention of taking City Hall and Dublin Castle. Dublin City Hall and the other occupied buildings came under intense gun fire and in the afternoon Connolly was shot and killed as he raised a flag on the roof. In 2005 a plaque was erected to commemorate the members of the City Hall Garrison killed in the Easter Rising.

DIT Irish Traditional Music Ensem-ble, led by Odhrán Ó Casaide & Tom Doorley, comprises full-time un-dergraduate and postgraduate stu-dents of Irish traditional music at the DIT Conservatory of Music andDrama. The ensemble, which com-bines both instrumental and vocal music, was originally modelled on the pioneering work of Seán O Riada and Ceoltóirí Cualainn. Since its inauguration, the ensemble has forged its own unique sound and style drawing on the rich musi-cal environment which surrounds it. The ensemble is fortunate in that it contains some of the finest young musical talent in Ireland today. This talent is nurtured and developed in an innovative and challenging way, resulting in mu-sical performances and recordings

which are at the forefront of the musical tradition. Recent high-lights include performances on RTÉ Radio 1’s Céilí House and tours of Louvain, Belgium and Savan-nah, Georgia, USA. This special concert sees John Sheahan of the Dubliners and Eamon Keane, songwriter, composer and pia-nist combine their talents in a kalei-doscope of music, song and poetry. John Sheahan was a key member of The Dubliners for almost 50 years. Throughout his career, he has been in steady demand as a studio musician, contributing to albums by, among oth-ers, Kate Bush, Terence Trent D’Arby and Rod Stewart. Over the years John has gained recognition as a composer and many of his compositions have been performed by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. It was a great compliment to his writing skills when André Rieu included John’s composition “The Marino Waltz” on a recent album. During the past decade, John has turned his attention to the music of words, and is currently compiling his first poetry collection. Eamon Keane singer -songwriter, composer and

pianist sold out the National Concert Hall twice in 2013. His song Hang The Moon from the album of the same name was described as the best Irish song of the decade by DJ Peter Grogan. As a film composer Eamon has drawn widespread acclaim for his score for Mna Dibeartha, the landmark series on the Irish Famine, which is now be-ing sold internationally. A feature of Eamon’s performances are his stun-ning piano improvisations.

Temple Bar TradFest marks the centenary of the outbreak of World War I with context and stories fromhistorian and RTÉ broadcaster Myles Dungan and songs of the conflict sung by special guest, De-clan O’Rourke. Hear the music of Ivor Novello and George M. Cohan as well as subversive and scato-logical ditties composed by the Un-known Soldier in Dublin’s City Hall. Also performing on the night will be The Brook Singers, male voice choir who are best known for their acapella performances. While we associate the Great War with car-nage and lunar landscapes there was an accompanying songscape which enriched European culture just as the war itself was impov-erishing the continent. Some of the songs were designed to recruit

young men into the armed forces, some to boost morale after they had reached the trenches. Many of the best examples of the World War I canon were anti-recruitment songs and ‘trench tunes’ composed in response to danger, monotony, disease, hunger and drudgery. Hear the songs and the context at this special night of commemora-tion in City Hall.

Belfast-born uilleann piper John McSherry and Detroit natives Tyler Duncan (uilleann pipes, whistles) and Michael Shimmin (percus-sion) have been dreaming of ‘the olllam’ for the last decade. With a name inspired by the king’s own ollam bards of Irish lore, the trio wanted an ensemble that naturally represented their combined expe-riences in a multiplicity of styles. In September 2012 the trio finally released their debut album ‘the olllam’ on Compass Records. De-scribed as stunning instrumental virtuosity, the debut is a magical marriage of tradition and technolo-gy, finding the listener somewhere between Radiohead and Planxty with the ambient emotionalism of Nick Drake. Performing as a six piece (pipes/whistles, percussion,

bass, guitar and keyboards), the oll-lam will be joined by special guest Pádraig Rynne; founding member of Guidewires and Triad (Dónal Lunny and Sylvain Barou), who is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s finest concertina players.

Winner of BEST ALBUM for ‘Broad-side’ at the 2013 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Broadside writes another extraordinary chapter in the story of Bellowhead, which began in 2004 when a disparate group of characters who initially knew one another from informal pub ses-sions thought it might be a good wheeze to pool their widely var-ied backgrounds, influences and talents and form a big band… just to see what happened. Even they couldn’t have imagined the results as their funny little enterprise – in-corporating top-notch jazz, world, folk and classical musicians in a swathe of brass, strings, squeeze-box, percussion and anything else that seemed like a good idea at the time – swiftly expanded into a gung-ho 11-piece line-up.

Four albums, a glut of awards, sell-out tours and a long trail of thun-derous festival appearances down the line, they’ve transported folk music into hitherto unknown terri-tory, introducing a whole new au-dience to it with them.

Meeting House Square was designed in 1991 taking its name from two buildings bordering the space, the 18th Century Presby-terian Meeting House and 19th Century Quaker Meeting House. The former was transformed in 1992 to become the Irish Film Institute, and the metamorphosis from waste ground to one of the City’s most remarkable architectural spaces was underway. Today, the edges of the square are formed by a huddle of vibrant cultural organisations, with their structures realised by some of Ireland’s most notable architects. Buildings such as the Gallery of Photography, The National Photographic Archive and The Ark, boasting its Calatrava stage, means that the boundaries of the square have evolved to become a sculptural showcase of modern urban design.

SUPER CÉILÍ is the world’s first traditional music nightclub – an event so innovative that it creates a whole new genre of music; ‘Céilí Haus’.

Live traditional musicians, a dance DJ and a battery of special effects combine to create phenomenal en-ergy on the dance floor.

On behalf of the Temple Bar Company and my fellow directors, Welcome to the Temple Bar TradFest Music Trail. In this our 9th year we’ve added a new exciting element to the Music Trail, An Audience with Legends of Irish Folk Music. As well as 5 days and nights of live music sessions in some of the finest pubs in Dublin, visitors to the Temple Bar TradFest will have the opportunity to enjoy 5 of Ireland’s most successful and internationally renowned folk groups. Set in the in-timate surrounds of some of Dublin’s’ best pubs, we’re delighted to have legendary bands The Fureys, Dublin City Ramblers, The Kilkennys, Baga-telle and The Dublin Legends (Sean Cannon, Eamon Campbell, Gerry O Connor & Patsy Watchorn all formerly members of The Dubliners) perform as part of Temple Bar Tradfest 2014.The Temple Bar Company through its membership has raised in excess of 5 million Euros over the last number of years, all of which has been rein-vested back into the area including funding the phenomenal growth of Temple Bar TradFest, now firmly one of Dublin’s most successful music fes-tivals. We have many exciting plans for Temple Bar over the coming years and we look forward to welcoming you to Dublin’s Cultural Quarter.

Oliver HughesChairman Temple Bar Company

During my years on the road as a musician with Stockton’s Wing, I learned first-hand, the influence of The Furey Brothers, The Dubliners and The Dublin City Ramblers on the development and appreciation of Irish Traditional and Folk music. These were the trailblazers for our music throughout the world. We‘re delighted to introduce An Audi-ence with Irish Folk Legends at this year’s Temple Bar TradFest. The Furey’s are still filling concert ven-ues through Ireland and Europe. The Dubliners, alas, are no longer with us, but former members of the band now known as The Dublin Legends will be taking part. The Dublin City Ramblers and Bagatelle still enthral audiences wherever they play. A rel-atively new band, creating a name for themselves in Europe are The Kilkennys and we’re delighted that they are performing for us. An Audi-ence with Irish Folk Legends is like a festival within a festival. The venues are intimate and I’m sure the experi-ences will be memorable.
