A Message from Brian

Wendy and I are in the process of searching for a house to live as we need to move out of the parsonage upon my retirement. We have never owned a home before so this is a new adventure to us and, thanks to our knowledgeable realtor as a guide, it has gone smoothly so far. We came up with a list of what we wanted in a house. We have looked at nine houses. Some of them just were not workable for us. Some we liked but sold quickly before we could make a decision. Others just did not meet our criteria for what we wanted. However, one of these other homes we both fell in love with but could not justify the expense to make the additions that were needed for us so with reluctance we let it go.

We looked at one particular house early on anticipating that this would be THE house to buy for us. It had everything and more in which we were interested. It was by far the best house we looked at, yet neither of us could get excited about the house. It did not “feel” right for either of us and we could not picture ourselves living there, try as we might. If we were really grown-ups we would have bought that house because rationally it met all our criteria. But since we were going to live there for a very long time, we decided against it. So much for our long list of criteria. We keep looking and we know somewhere out there we will find the home that we need and want.

This experience demonstrated to me how irrational we are as human beings, not that I need much convincing of this in my professional career or my personal life. We like to appear as reasonable and rational human beings yet there are so many conscious and unconscious forces at work within us that it is almost impossible. It is a good thing too. If human beings were truly rational, the human race would have gone extinct long ago because if you rationally thought about all that goes into raising children, the emotional and financial investment, only to have them grow up and move away, why do it? (Fortunately evolution invented hormones.) So many other decisions are totally

irrational, making choices from a gut level, on hunches or simply what feels right. Who in their right mind chooses to bicycle across the country?

These other emotional, non-rational and unconscious forces at work are important. Some of them aid us and help us to grow and discovers life’s mystery and wonder. Others such forces can get us into trouble and mess up our lives. The trouble is we don’t know which way to go. Carl Jung said that there is something in us that is always pushing us to grow emotionally and spiritually to become fully human.

It is in this part of our lives that I believe that God’s Spirit is at work. To be sure God is in our rational selves. Conscience is a place for God to be at work. God is moving in and through the unconscious parts of us also, in the hunches, restlessness, yearning, joy, sorrow, fears and anger. To be a follower of Jesus in our world is not a rational decision. Something, that great Someone moves within is. The deep mystery of us opens to the Deep Mystery of the Holy. We open ourselves to God’s way and God leads us on a journey that shapes our lives and blesses us in ways that we would never have been blessed if we listened to our rational self.

Summer is good time to get more in touch with the non rational forces at work in us. Follow your mother’s advice, “Go and play outside.” Be silly with your grandchild. Pick up a pencil and draw what you see or keep a journal of what you are feeling and thinking. Come to worship on Sunday and leave your rational schedules and to do lists at home. Sing out loud. Waste time. See an old friend and make a new one. Breathe in the scent of a flower. Volunteer to help someone. Take a risk. Step outside your comfort zone.

We live far too much in our heads and rational selves. The life worth living, the abundant life Jesus talks about, is found deep within. It is not rational, and thank God for it. Peace, Brian

celebrating the Sacrament of Holy Communion, the first Sunday Brian is back from his trip.

FFRROOMM TTHHEE BBOOAARRDD

OOFF CCHHRRIISSTTIIAANN SSTTEEWWAARRDDSSHHIIPP In addition to being a spiritual community, a

church is also an organization with responsibilities including financial responsibilities. These responsibilities do not go away seasonally. Summer is upon us, a season when we often relax and change our routines. As we enjoy the warm weather we must not forget our church’s needs and, our individual stewardship financial commitment or pledge to the church.

Please also consider other summer opportunities of stewardship of your time and talents available within the church and our church community.

Also, our phone ministry continues to be a vital part of our community stewardship. It is used by our homebound parishioners. If you are interested in supporting this fellowship, please donate towards it. Any portion of the $120 monthly charge for this ministry is greatly appreciated. Please make checks payable to Honeoye UCC and clarify that you would like it to go to the church telephone ministry.

Thank you! Have a good summer!

SSUUPPPPOORRTTIINNGG OOPPEENN AANNDD AAFFFFIIRRMMIINNGG As one of ten UCC congregations in the

Genesee Valley Association that voted to be Open and Affirming (ONA) we are participating together with these congregations in ways to make this known. On Saturday, July 18 you are invited to join other UCC congregations and people in the Gay Pride parade in Rochester. If you would like to participate or have questions, contact the church office. It will be an adventure.

I am always curious about how the things we see around us all of the time- and just take for granted- got to be there. I thought some of you might be also and I would do a “Rambling” about Memorials. Well-I opened up a Pandora’s Box and don’t know how to close it! After, literally, weeks of reading old minutes I am still overwhelmed.

Today our church has an active Memorial Committee composed of three church members-one elected each year for a three year term. They receive, record, deposit and acknowledge all memorial contributions and also act as an advisory committee to all families desiring the contributions given in their loved ones memory to go for a specific purpose.

Do you know who they are in 2015??? They are Verna Ward; Margaret White; and Carol VanDusen.

At the Annual Meeting in 1957, Mrs Edalin Ward moved that a Memorial Book be prepared for the records we already have to which additional gifts received can be added. The motion carried.

On May 12, 1957 “The Book of Remembrance” was presented to the church in memory of Mabel H. Drain by her daughters Carol Bennett, Freida Hamilton, Janice Tram and Wilma Colegrove. (Frieda was Laurie Card’s grandmother). Caroline Affolter (Mother of Mary Pestle and Clark Affolter) did a beautiful job of recording until 1988. This book has at least 146 names listed plus 26 more memorial contributions to the 1963-64 Building campaign. It was dedicated January 19, 1958. ( I do not know why the recordings stopped in 1988).

Just for fun I will list the 1988 entries-some of them will ring a bell for many of you, I hope- Cyril Tucker; Dr. Roger Ward; Linda Michel; Leona Stoddard;Lillian Treble White; John A Reed; Richard DeWind; Raymond Proctor; Janet Koon and John Van Der Kamp Sr.

In 1957 the Memorial Committee consisted of Caroline Affolter; George Curran; Sue Frances and Dr. Graham, Pastor.

The first recorded Memorial Gift to our church (as far as I can tell) was a $500 legacy from Mrs. Mary Pitt in 1901.

When I had the idea to write about the Memorial Committee I thought I would mention how the gifts had been used and who gave them. That is when “Pandora” came out of her box!!

We take a big jump to 1931 (sorry!). That year a set of six dozen floral dinnerware was presented by Florence Worthington (she lived in Kip Gillen’s house) in memory of her parents. A sample is in the Ruth Huff memorial case in the church library.

In 1941 collection plates were given in memory of Claire McClintock, father of Marian McClintock Case ( I hope you remember Marian grew up and was ordained in our church) by the Hemlock Community Church Club.

In 1947 a US Flag was given by Mildred Burns in memory of her mother. Rev. William Burns (her father) was pastor from 1900-1906.

Also in 1947 a movie projector and screen was given by William V. Pitt.

In 1948 drapery material used at the Altar was in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Fowler. Also that year we received a candelabra from Mr. Dempsey.

Mrs. Thomas Frances gave a gold cross for the Altar in memory of her sister as well as a piano for the “Social Room”.

Also in 1948, Rev and Mrs. Robert Gray presented the church a Bible for the Altar –and- we received collection plates from the Workers Class and a Christian Flag from Mildred Burns.

In 1950 an Altar Cloth in memory of Charles Case was given by his wife. She also gave a covering for the cross in 1958.

This seems like a good year to stop until next time!

Ramblings from the Old One…

Collages for the Psyche Collages for the Psyche

hosted by Gail Hosking, Tuesday, August 18th 6-8:30

pm. Cost $15.00 Sign-up required, sheet is on the bulletin board across from the Church office. Aristotle said that the soul thinks in images. Our goal in this workshop is to help us make our internal processes visible on paper, and in doing so make contact with our soul. Using images of all sorts we will see the questions we are asking on our journey in a new way. This creation is meant to have its own healing qualities, a kind of art therapy for the soul. Anyone interested in this workshop should start saving the following right away: magazines, old postcards, copies of photos, images of all sorts, a dream with details, interesting papers (like wrapping paper or hand-made papers) crayons, poems, and anything else that catches their eye. Examples of Gail’s collages at www.gailhosking.org
