June 28, 2017 Greetings in the name of Christ! As some of you already know, Bethel – along with churches throughout history and across the globe – follows a “church calendar” known as the “liturgical year” (or “church year” or “Christian year”). It’s that rhythmic rotation of seasons you experi-ence annually (e.g. Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, etc); it informs the readings used on Sundays, the colors on the altar, and other elements of our life together. For the past several years, our pattern at Bethel has been to select a single style of worship for each season, then rotate to a different style when the season changes… with one exception.

Following Pentecost Sunday, we enter into the lengthy season known as “Ordinary Time” or “The Time After Pen-tecost.” It is by far the longest single season in the liturgical year, covering 6 months from June through Novem-ber. Because of its length, instead of sticking with one single worship style throughout it we have used a weekly rotation. This year, the rotation will be: 1st Sunday of the month: Now the Feast and Celebration (originally composed by Marty Haugen for the Universi-ty Congregation at Pacific Lutheran University) 2nd Sunday of the month: Healing Service (created specifically for Bethel – special focus on opportunities for healing prayer) 3rd Sunday of the month: ELW Setting #7 (a Latin-flavored service created for the new ELCA hymnal in 2006) 4th Sunday of the month: ELW Setting #10 (another service from the 2006 hymnal, but this one is built around familiar tunes from well-known hymns) 5th Sunday of the month: Holden Prayer (originally composed by Marty Haugen for the worshiping community at Holden Village) Additionally, as you’re enjoying summertime in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, please keep in mind some things happening at Bethel in the next few months: July 3-9: Pastor Chris on vacation July/August (date TBD): congregational meeting concerning proposed staffing changes August 6: Outdoor Worship/BBQ at Bethel August 7-27: Pastor Chris on vacation August 15: North City Jazz Walk August/September (date TBD): congregational trip to Holden Village September 6-20: Judy on vacation May Christ’s blessings follow you throughout your summer adventures! Sadly this is not possible for 1 out of 4 Shoreline School District students who qualify for free or reduced lunch. The Back to School Consortium helps fill this gap for those families in the Shoreline School District who are living with a low income and/or experiencing circumstances in their lives that make it challenging to prepare their children for school. It costs a family at least:

Holman’s June 2017 Update

June 15, 2017 We finished Levit-icus! The team did the last chap-ter using our notes after we left. Your pray-ers really made a difference. Thanks so much. We had a warm

welcome to Chereponi. The heat and humidity were intense, but the welcome we received from our friends was even warmer. Pastor Azumah has a vehicle, so he took us to visit friends in two villages. We also saw many friends in Chereponi and received numerous gifts of meals and food (guinea fowls and grains!). Tom visited the chief the morning we left. Our time was packed and exhausting but so heartwarming.

On our way in and out of Ghana, we saw friends in Accra, too. We’re so grateful to God for how it all worked out. And we’re grateful for your prayers. Please pray for me and Tom to overcome the obstacles to finishing the Gospel of Luke in the F language and the Reading and Writing Book in the S language. Warm wishes in Christ,

On Tuesday, Oct. 31, ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton will co-host a commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. The event, which will include a worship service and speakers, will be held at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Eaton will be joined by co-hosts ELCA Vice Presi-dent Bill Horne, Bishop Bill Gafkjen of the Indiana-Kentucky Synod and Bishop Richard Graham of the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. Synod.

The event, which will meet under the theme “Looking Back and Called Forward,” and will be available online via livestream for all to watch.

Reformation anniversary commemoration planned for Washington, D.C.

The Church’s journey has continually been expressed through music – ranging from hymns and anthems whose roots go back to the early Church – to those that reflect the current time and look to the future. All leave their mark as the Church expresses this truth: Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today and forever. This event is such a wonderful way to honor loved ones who have died of cancer. Thank you Joe Mary, Walt, and all of the others who so diligently work to raise money for research (in honor of Julie and Mary) and to hopefully in the end defeat cancer!

This was our year 6 as a successful team! I'm still so impressed and honored with your commitment and efforts to this cause. We continue to walk and fight against this cancer beast that has impacted many of our lives in some way or another. Thanks for joining me on this journey. The Green Baffoons had our highest total ever this year- $6,204! I tallied up our total for the last 6 years combined and we've raised $24,728. That's pretty amazing!

I always love that we start each Relay with honoring the survivors and acknowledging the caregivers. We also had a speaker who is a doctor who also dealt with his own cancer diagnosis. Then Relay's off and running.. I mean walking :) We had many of the regu-

lar fun events again this year- water balloon toss, silent auction, box car derby race, hypno-tist, bake sales, etc. Thanks again to Jason for feeding us with the BBQ. There were lots of friends and family who stopped by and visited throughout the day and night too. The luminar-ia hour was inspiring as always and there was a slideshow, a singer, and a bagpiper. The Lynnwood Kiwanis club faithfully serves us a pancake breakfast in the morning and then closing ceremonies happened followed by one final lap to signal next years Relay. Our whole event raised $58,279! I always make it my goal to walk with everyone throughout the day and I know that next year I will not sign up to be in

that registration booth! I will be taking on the sponsor-ship role for next year though and will be looking for

donations.

Synod Assembly Review

Thank you to the planning team and all who attended as voting members, visitors and observers. It was a lovely day, filled with the Spirit!

The assembly had several experimental components to it this year. First, we gathered for one day only - focus-ing on business. This allowed us to tackle elections, amendments, resolutions, budget, and reports all in one day. While some missed the “program” aspect of a typical assembly (keynote speaker, workshops, more time for visiting display tables), most appreciated the ability to attend the assembly without having to take a day off of work or commute to- and - from the assembly for two days.(Full details:lutheransnw.org/2017 – Synod- Assembly)

Second, we held the assembly in one of our congrega-tion’s buildings—Salem Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon. Many thanks to Pastor Marc Hander, the fabu-lous Salem staff, and tireless team of volunteers -your gracious hospitality set the stage for our time together.

Finally, we shook things up with our display table area. Due to space and time restrictions, we invited our min-istry partners to use tables in the meeting area ensur-ing higher visibility. Additionally, we had three of our interns introduce each of these ministry partners shar-ing the many important ministries within the synod.

Highlights from the day included: excellent worship leadership from our newest con-

gregation, Church of the Apostles and our new As-sistant to the Bishop, Pastor Shelley Bryan Wee;

reports from our faithful synod officers; giving thanks to Pastor Nancy Winder for her service as our Assistant to the Bishop for Candidacy; hearing about the national expression of the ELCA from our Churchwide Rep, Pastor Dan Rift;

AND we received over $8,000 for our offering designees:

10% to our companion synod, The Evangelical Lu-theran Church in European Russia; 45% to a global designee, ELCA World Hunger; and 45% to three local organizations (FamilyPromise of Skagit Val-ley, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church

(Concrete) Internship, and La Iglesia El Camino de Emaus (Burlington, Spanish-language ministry).

We celebrated some major ministry milestones: Open Door Ministries shared a delicious “25 Years in Ministry Cake” (and cookies) with the assembly and we celebrated our 15th anniversary as a Rec-onciling in Christ synod.

My young son asked what the highest num-ber I had ever counted to was. I didn't know, but I asked about his highest number. It was 5,372. "Oh," I said. "Why did you stop there?" "Church was over."

WORLD MISSION PRAYER LEAGUE TRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGH PRAYER

Dear prayer Partners in Christ; Greetings to all from the country of Ecuador. Lois and I had planned to return to Mexico last year, but were unable to do that. We still feel called to serve in Latin America so when the need in Ecuador was presented to us we came here to serve a short term of 3 months.

The Ecuadorian Lutheran Bible Institute needed some help in taking Bible classes to the churches so we decided we could do that. We have been here since mid-April and plan to return to the US in July. We have been well received by Lauro Garcia Franco, the Bible Institute director, and have been living in an apartment at the Institute since arriving.

We have been welcomed very warmly by the Ecuadorian peo-ple. Lois has the assignment of bringing music classes and some English classes to the churches and I have been bringing week long workshops on the subject of Pastoral Ministry and the Book of Romans. I have also been preaching in the churches on Sundays and we participated in an exciting three day youth retreat near Guayaquil with about 75 youth in attendance. This retreat was sponsored by the Soul Children organization that teaches youth to evangelize their peers with music. Lauro Garcia of the Ecuadorian Bible Institute has been arranging the workshops. So far we have had workshops in six different church in the cities of Guayaquil, Cañar, Cuenca and Machala. We will travel to the city of Quito this week and later return to Quayaquil for two more workshops. English class with Lois in Daule.

Some of the Workshop Students presented at the Sunday worship at “Alfa y Omega” church in Cañar. Lois and Richard with Taita Luis and his wife. They were the first Quichua believers in Cañar. It was thrilling to hear their story. Taita Luis is 96 years old. He first believed the Gospel of Jesus in 1976. We will be returning to the US on July 6. Please pray for us as we continue to visit the people and pre-sent our Bible Workshops here. It is wonderful to work with the people who love the Lord and want to serve in their churches.
