Welcome to the Anfield School e-Newsletter…
Dear Parents,
We have sent your child’s settling in report home with them this afternoon so that you
have plenty of time to digest the content before Parent Consultation Day on Friday
25th November. If you have any questions about the report then please follow up with
the teachers during your appointment. In the event that you are unable to attend on
that day, please contact us as soon as possible to make another appointment – it is
really important that the teachers meet with every parent and have a chance to discuss
student progress face-to-face.
I look forward to catching up with you all next week!

term break. All students must change to winter uniform with effect from Monday, 7th
November.
STUDENT PICK-UP CARDS
Please be reminded of the pick-up card arrangements.
General procedure for collecting students from school
Anyone collecting your child from school should present his/her Anfield School
Pick-up Card to the teacher at the time of dismissal. If you cannot collect your child in
person, the card should be passed to one of the persons named on our Release
Authorisation Form. The teacher will release your child to that person but only upon
presentation of the pick-up card (student card).
In the case that you are unable to forward the card to anyone, you must call the school
office on 2692 8823 as soon as possible, to inform the school as to who will be
collecting your child and by providing his/her FULL NAME and HONG KONG ID
NUMBER (even if his/her name is already named on the Release Authorisation Form).
If we do not hear from you, we will not release your child until we have contacted
you and/or an authorised person comes to pick the child up.
The school will call you for reconfirmation if we have any doubt regarding
non-parental pick up.
STUDENT TEMPERATURE RECORD SHEET
Please take your child's temperature every day before they come to school.
Parents/Guardians should record the child's temperature on the record sheet which
can be downloaded from the school website and sign it daily. Children will have their
temperature checked again as they arrive school.
*If the temperature is over 99oF or 37.2
oC, your child should not come to school and
you should consult a doctor promptly. Please contact the school to let us know that
your child will be absent.
PARKING
Please note that there is NO parking in school or on the roadside outside of school. To
avoid traffic congestion and the resulting dangers to the children, please avoid parking
close to the school.
We have been informed by the Management Office of World-Wide Gardens, that the
local police will be monitoring traffic near the school daily from 7.15 to 8.15am and
also from 3.15 to 4.45pm to ensure that cars are not being parked inconsiderately.
Please follow our advice and do not park near the school as you run the risk of
receiving a parking ticket!

IN THE CLASSROOM
A weekly look at what has been happening in your child’s classroom…
YEAR 1 – Miss Elise, Mr. Casey
In recent weeks, Year 1 children have been building up their level of independence
when working in class and trying hard to motivate themselves to ‘give things a go’,
even if they are tricky! They are now using their phonics knowledge to tackle
unfamiliar words in their English and trying to remember different strategies to help
with new challenges in maths.
In English this week, the children have been writing their own stories, using a familiar
text as a starting point and changing some of the characters and ideas as they go along.
We have been using pictures and actions to help retell the stories and make us familiar
with the content; this has been great fun and has given the children the opportunity to
be creative in their written work.
In maths, we continue to build up our knowledge of time. We have been looking at
half past the hour and recognising digital and analogue displays. The children started
to draw the hands on clocks, remembering that one hand needs to be big and one
needs to be small and they also created their own clocks, with moving hands, using
paper plates.
We all enjoyed having the chance to bring a toy to school for our topic work this week.
We took the time to talk to our friends about it and enjoyed showing each other the
different toys that we had brought. Our next task will be to compare these with a
range of toys from the past before we begin to set up our class toy museum.
All of the children should now have brought home their lines to learn for the
Christmas performance. We are working hard on this in school and really appreciate
your help at home to encourage the children to project their voices so that you will be
able to hear them clearly when you come to watch the show in a few weeks.
YEAR 2 – Miss Rachel, Miss Megan
We have had a wonderful week of learning in Year 2!
In English this week, the children have been learning the story of Jack and the
Beanstalk. We created actions to help us orally retell the story. The children used
different colours to identify and highlight outstanding openers, super connectives, a
range of punctuation and WOW words in the text. They then created a text map using
these key elements and used this to write the story independently. A great effort!
In mathematics this week, the children have been introduced to multiplication. They
used a 100 square to find multiples of 2, 5 and 10. We discussed the patterns and
realised that by looking at the units, we can tell which times table the number is in. We
then moved on to understanding and showing multiplication as repeated addition
and as arrays. The children used counters and drawings to aid their understanding.
In computing, the children have learned to use the application Popplet. They used this
application to create mind maps about characters from traditional tales. The children
worked in groups to do this and it was wonderful to see them sharing and taking turns
to work effectively together.
We ended the week with ‘International Day!’ The children visited each of the Key
Stage 1 class countries and created a craft. We are sure they will enjoy telling you all
they have learned about the different countries over the weekend.
Miss Megan and Miss Rachel
YEAR 3 – Miss Rachel, Miss Lisa
The teachers have been impressed with how the children have been showing their
nurturing skills this week. They have been more aware of how they treat their
classmates and how their nurturing behaviour makes a positive impact on their
learning and playtime behaviour. We look forward to presenting the Anfield Attribute
Nurturing award later this term.
In English, the children have been writing a letter to dog lovers in order to persuade
them to adopt a dog from the SPCA. They have created their own rescued dog using
descriptive language to share appearances and qualities, also incorporating paragraphs
and superlatives. The children greatly enjoyed making up their own adult signatures.
The quality of their writing is improving each week and we have been very impressed
with their letter writing. We will use these new skills to write a letter to Father
Christmas next week.
Miss Rachel’s mathematics class has been continuing with the learning of fractions. Our
fraction wizards have learnt how to make equivalent fractions of all sizes by
multiplying the numerator and denominator by the same number. Their pizza
fractions are now complete and look good enough to eat! Miss Lisa’s mathematics
class has been focusing on division skills, dividing in a different number group and
understanding how division means sharing equally.
The children have been learning more about the body as part of our ‘Animals
including Humans’ science topic. Using new scientific words for the body has made us
feel like ‘real’ doctors - please test us on locating bones like the femur or scapula on
our body.
In art, our creative minds have been busy designing Viking long boats for our seascape
art piece. The children investigated what chalk pastel skills they would need to
illustrate different types of wood. They worked very carefully, using the highly
pigmented chalk pastels later on to add colour to their Viking long boat sketches.
All children should now be wearing the Anfield winter school uniform and all items of
clothing, including PE kits, must be clearly named with the correct class.
We look forward to welcoming you to look at the children’s fabulous work in the
classroom next week when we meet on Parent Consultation Day.
Miss Rachel and Miss Lisa
YEAR 4 – Miss Jackie, Miss Marie
We've had a lovely week in Year 4.
In English, the children have been focusing on stories from other cultures. They learnt
an Australian tale about a wombat. Both teachers were really impressed with the
children's ability to retell the stories using gestures to help them remember key phrases.
The children also learnt how to use images to make story maps in order to sequence
the key events.
In maths, Miss Jackie's class has continued their learning of fractions. This week we've
been finding fractions of amounts and understanding the relationship between
division and fractions. Miss Marie's class has learnt how to divide by chunking and she
was very pleased with how quickly the children learnt this new concept and
persevered when they initially found it tricky.
In art, the children have been practising printing techniques and researching mosaics.
They found that a slow and steady hand produced the best prints and worked hard to
copy the geometric borders. The children enjoyed being historians and searching for
clues in the ancient mosaics. They are looking forward to designing and creating their
own.
In topic, we learnt about the world’s continents and oceans. This week we've
discovered the physical and human features of the United Kingdom. The children used
their map skills to locate where these features are.
In computing, the children have been adding to their comics. They collected images
from the internet and are beginning to merge them to tell a story. We cannot wait to
add special features such as speech bubbles and an interesting background.
Miss Jackie’s class has also been rehearsing their class assembly. They have worked
hard on learning their lines and spoke with clear loud voices in the assembly today.
Well done.
Have a lovely weekend.
Miss Marie and Miss Jackie
YEAR 5 – Miss Bethany, Miss Joanne
There is no newsletter for Year 5 this week due to the children being away on the Year
5 residential camp.
YEAR 6 – Miss Anna
We have had two fantastic weeks in Austria class. Last week, I had the pleasure of
accompanying the children to Camp. We had some exciting and interesting
experiences, including enjoying a hot spa at a waste processing plant in Tuen Mun,
kayaking on a lake on Lamma and having a guided tour of the fishing village of Tai O
on Lantau. The children were well-behaved, polite, enthusiastic, engaged and
motivated for the whole week (even when it was raining!) and acted as excellent
ambassadors for Anfield.
This week, the children settled quickly and easily back into the school routine and we
have had a busy and productive week.
In science, the children have continued on their learning journey about the
classification of living things. This week, we looked in more depth at each of the five
Kingdoms; Monera, Protista, Funghi, Plantae and Animalia. The children used iPads to
research information about each one, finding out about the characteristics of the
organisms which are grouped in each kingdom and identifying example organisms.
They then presented their research in a poster of their own design, which we will
display in our classroom.
In English, we have started to look selected works of Philip Pullman, a significant
children’s author. The children have enjoyed listening to excerpts from his stories and
they are keen to read more of his books. We looked at Pullman’s use of descriptive
vocabulary, which creates a vivid image in the reader’s mind, and experimented with
writing expanded noun phrases and complex sentences to engage and interest the
readers of our work.
In maths, the children have been consolidating their understanding of subtraction,
using an empty number line to count up in order to find the difference between pairs
of numbers with one or two decimal places. They then applied their understanding in
a problem solving context and I have been pleased to see the good progress that many
children are making with their problem solving skills.
Thank you to all the parents who returned the appointment slips for parent
consultations next week. Your appointment time has been glued into your child’s
journal and I look forward to meeting with you next Friday
Well done for another great week, Year 6. Have a fun and restful weekend.
Miss Anna
ST. BOSCO CENTRE – Miss Emma, Miss Vicky
This week in the St. Bosco Centre we have been thinking about travelling around the
world in time for International Day today. Over the week we have talked about
places we have been on holiday and where we might be going for the Christmas
holidays. We created our own passports and discussed the different nationalities in our
classroom. We learnt our groups: helicopters, planes, trains, buses and cars and split
into them to go around the different KS1 class countries. It was a lot of fun finding out
about the countries and joining in with the activities.
In English, we have continued writing the draft copy of our non-fiction book, ready to
be published next week. We have focused on sentence structures and what makes a
super sentence. We have also been practising our lines for the Christmas performance.
Don’t forget to continue to learn these at home and congratulations to those children
who have already learnt their lines off by heart!
In mathematics, Mounties group has been creating 3D models to learn what an edge,
face and vertices are. Moose group has been creating 2D shapes with a variety of
materials and is beginning to match the shape to its name.
We have been very lucky to have Miss Becky, a singing teacher, visit our school and
teach us some of our Christmas songs this week. She was most complimentary about
our lovely singing voices!
Have a lovely weekend.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION – Mr. Calum
There is no newsletter this week as Mr. Calum has been with the Year 5 students on
residential camp.
MUSIC – Miss Sharon
In our musical assembly this week, we have continued to get festive by rehearsing all
of our Christmas songs. Some of us stood up as a class, in front of the others, to
perform various songs so we could work on our performance technique.
In Year 1, we analysed all movements from ‘The Carnival of the Animals’. We then
used this analysis to help us create our own composition with an animal theme. To do
this composition we worked in groups to select an animal and talked about which
instruments would be suitable to use and how we would play them to represent that
particular animal.
In Year 2, our focus was to analyse different movements of Stravinsky’s ‘Firebird’ suite.
There were many different musical elements that we identified within this suite using
the correct musical terminology. After thinking carefully about all these musical
elements, we then applied them to our own performance and identified them within
the songs we will perform for our show.
This week in Year 3, harmony in 2-parts was our focus. We continued to work with
the glockenspiel and our partner to practise and perform a motif from Beethoven’s
5th Symphony. Getting the timing correct was tricky and we had to count carefully.
Some of us performed to the class.
We studied Cantonese Opera in Year 4 and Year 6 this week. Our aim was to
understand the historical context and background of certain Cantonese Opera and
where in the musical time line it began. We also identified different roles and ways of
performing, as well as the different ways the characters perform.
Musical quote of the week:
“You're like a song that I heard when I was a little kid but forgot I knew until I heard
it again.” ― Maggie Stiefvater, Lament: The Faerie Queen's Dec
A tuneful week – well done, Anfield!
SPANISH – Miss Marta
This week in Spanish, we started the unit about the names of different clothes. We
practised the spelling and writing of the different words. Also, we learned a new song
and played a game to memorise the vocabulary. The children really enjoy the activity
and they tried their best. The Spanish pets will continue changing homes.
Have a good weekend.
Ms. Marta
