ETHICS CLASSES TO BE TAUGHT AGAIN Premier Nathan Rees has approved ethics classes to be taught in NSW schools from next year, offering an alternative to religious education for the first time in more than 100 years. “Parents have said they want their children to be fully engaged when they are at school,” said Mr Rees. “The current system however does not allow for educational classes for children who do not participate in scripture. “There is real concern that students not attending religious scripture classes are missing an opportunity to learn. “Approving ethics classes means a simple addition to classes without diminishing the importance of religion for other families. “The Education Minister will now consult with the Teacher’s Federation, religious organisations and other groups about a trial in 10 NSW schools. “This is not about ending religious education in our schools, it’s about providing a choice. Mr Rees said the Government was devel-oping a proposal with the St James Ethics Centre to conduct a trial in up to 10 primary schools over two terms in 2010.

CRICKET NEWS U14S CANOWINDRA V BOWLING CLUB After their close draw in the first round this should have been a close match but with Nathan Leach at a rugby league day Canowindra steam-rollered Bowling Club from the opening over. Canowindra won the toss and sent the opposition in. Rohan Toole took a wicket with his first and third balls and had them at 2-0. Bailey cain continued the damage with figures of 3 overs, 2 maidens 3-2. Kane Brooks made 8 runs and the other 6 came from extras. Tim Middleton was unluckily run out but Rohan Toole and Alex Willson reached the winning total in the third over. Bowling Club continued to bowl overs and Rohan retired on 21, Alex retired on 30 and Simon Whatman retired on 29. Everyone enjoyed the batting practice. U16S CANOWINDRA V COWRA MOTORS Cowra Motors won the toss and elected to bat. Ben Schaffer tried to dominate the bowling but he went down the wicket once too often to Nick Traves and was bowled for 9 while fellow opener Brad Siegert holed out to James Watson in the deep for 8. Canowindra had the measure of their opposition as apart from Blake Stead 18 and Matt Siegert not out 35, the scores were kept to single figures. Nick Willson too a superb slips catch as he threw himself backwards and caught the ball in his outstretched left hand. Nick Traves 2/6, Matt McLean 2/9 and Matt Beaton 2/5 ensured that Cowra Motors were all out 90. In their run chase Harry Myers and Jacob Devlin both retired on 4 and 26, while Nick Willson and Nick Traves also retired on 13 and 5. Connor Bennett made a confident 18 while Matt McLean retired on 21. James Watson took to the bowling in the latter part of the innings with 4 fours in his innings of 21. Canowindra ran out winners 145-90

SWIMMING CLUB Firstly thanks to all swimmers as they un-derstood their instructions from last week and the lead up to the relay ran much more smoothly. The 33m freestyle or the spoon threw up some big improvers who bettered their time by more than 3 sec-onds and were ineligible to swim in the semis. Claire Wright bettered her time by six seconds in the heat while Angus fisher improved his by 7 secs. Sam Coady and Josh Middleton then destroyed their times in the semi as he took 6 seconds off their PBs. In the final it was a very close race as Wade Kinsela lowered his time by 2 seconds and took the spoon in a PB of 37 seconds. Second placed Zali Dunn lowered her time by 2 seconds in her heat, a further 2 seconds in the semi and another second in the final. Well done to both swimmers. In the relay there were 6 lanes of eight swimmers and everyone only had to swim once. The winners in a close finish was lane four and the team consisted of: Angus Andrews, Harry Jeffrey, Sophie Tremain, Ellen Blair, Will Fagan, Ebann Malae, Regan Hughes and Jayden Brown. This week there are the four strokes in 33m, a 66m freestyle and a medley, so sign up before Wednesday afternoon and be ready for roll call at 5:45pm.
