This triennial event, organized by The Chopin Society of Hong Kong Ltd. gathers in Hong Kong an extraordinary group of pianists, teachers and musicians whose primary purpose is not just to judge a carefully selected group of exceptional young pianists from all over the world, but also to make, together with them, music. This is the fourth competition organized by the Society, the previous three having taken place in 2005, 2008 and 2011. Their success in terms of the quality of the candidates participating, the subsequent success of the first prize winners and the overall contribution that the competition made in asserting Hong Kong’s position as a major hub of artistic excellence in Asia has been most encouraging.
We have to stress that all this has been made possible through the generosity of our sponsors, individually acknowledged in a special section of this pamphlet.
Competitions tend to be “musical races” with the single aim of picking a winner. This competition turns the concept on its head emphasizing first and foremost, music-making by all the participants, by ensuring that judges and the judged participate in days of high quality solo recitals, chamber music events and spectacular piano concertos. Then and only then, the focus turns to choosing a winner!
The Society is very privileged to count with the presence of the world-famous pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy, its honorary President and chairman of the Jury of the Competition, who will also be conducting the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the official orchestra of the competition.
Added to this are the other members of the Jury, all major pianists, teachers and musicians (in alphabetical order): Tigran Alikhanov, Peter Frankl, Gary Graffman, Thorun Johannsdottir-Ashkenazy, Gabriel Kwok Ka-tak, LI Ming-qiang, Pascal Roge, Jeremy Siepmann, Mikhail Voskresensky and Eleanor Wong Yee-lun.Contestants, Members of the Jury, as well as invited artists, will be presented in solo piano recitals, as part of a chamber ensemble and in concertos. The Chamber Group of the Competition is the Logos Chamber Group specially gathered together by the Society and consisting of Andrew Haveron (first violin), Magnus Johnston (second violin), Joel Hunter (viola) and Pierre Doumenge (cello).
The orchestra performing during the fourth round of the competition and in the last day of the Competition/Festival period Performance will be the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Vladimir Ashkenazy and with guest concert master Andrew Haveron.
The Society is delighted to have had a specially commissioned piece for solo piano composed by the well-known Finn composer, Einojuhani Routavaara, who has named it “Mirroring”, and which will be played by each one of the six finalists just before they perform the Concerto they have selected from the available list (Round IV).
All events of the Competition are open to the public.
Interspersed among the different stages of the competition, there will be a number of non-competition events, (talks, demonstrations, master classes, workshops, films, CD releases, a book presentation… maybe even a marquee to be erected just outside the City Hall …) all things together amounting to a surpassing Joy of Music Festival offering Hong Kong audiences a unique opportunity to feast their senses on the power of music. Created and executed by few, for the enjoyment of everybody, this event is dedicated to Hong Kong and its people and aiming to contribute to Hong Kong’s climb to the summit of excellence. We hope that this competition will first and foremost provide audiences in Hong Kong with a veritable feast of high quality music-making as well as the thrill of following the progress through the stages of the competition of some exceptionally gifted young musicians.

第四屆香港國際鋼琴大賽
香港國際鋼琴大賽，再度由蕭邦社隆重巨獻！這項三年一度的國際大賽，早已被譽為本地古典音樂
屆內舉足輕重的大賽。盛事不僅旨在欣賞評審世界各地精心挑選的年輕鋼琴家的表演，更透過古典
音樂的奇特魅力，匯集享譽盛名的音樂家､教授和天賦出色的年輕鋼琴家。繼2005年，2008年和
2011年，蕭邦社繼往開來，2014年為廣大樂迷貢獻＜第四屆國際鋼琴大賽＞。過往賽事，從參賽
者素質､獲獎者發展成就和賽事推動香港作為亞洲主要音樂藝術中心樞紐地位，均影響深遠，令人
鼓舞。
承蒙贊助商長期慷慨支持，此項賽事方得以順利進行，蕭邦社已於此刊背頁銘感，並將於節目場刊
內再度致謝。
傳統賽事往往以「音樂比賽」為單一目的挑選獲獎者，蕭邦社本著思維創新，強調賽事首要之本乃
透過所有參賽者在賽事中的演奏，無論精彩獨奏､迷人室樂協奏還是壯觀宏偉的交響樂協奏，讓所
有適逢盛事的音樂愛好者享受古典音樂的美妙世界。其次，方由德高望重的音樂大師組成的評審
團，從中慎重選出佼佼者。
香港蕭邦社非常榮幸宣佈，世界著名音樂家及指揮家Vladimir ASHKENAZY（亞殊堅納西）將再次
擔任本次賽事評審團主席，並在所有香港管弦樂團表演節目中擔任指揮。
評審團由著名鋼琴大師、教授及音樂家組成。評審團成員為(排名不分先後)：Tigran ALIKHANOV,

評審團成員，獲邀的音樂家及參賽者將聯合表演，包括鋼琴獨奏音樂會、室樂合奏和鋼琴協奏曲演
出。倫敦室樂團(LCO)將擔任本次賽事的室樂團，室樂團團員為：Andrew Haveron (第一小提琴手)、
Magnus Johnston (第二小提琴手)、Joel Hunter (中提琴手) 和 Pierre Doumenge (大提琴手)。
第四回合的管弦樂賽事及第五回合的表演音樂會則由香港管弦樂團演出，世界著名音樂家和指揮

容包括有：講座､演示､大師班､音樂坊､電影､唱片發行､讀書會等等。蕭邦社現亦積極考慮籌
備在香港大會堂外設置嘉年華帳蓬！這些項目多元且緊密相扣，我們藉提供不同範疇的音樂及教育
項目，秉承本社固有信念，古典音樂並非精英或小眾專利，我們旨在香港傳播古典音樂，讓本地聽
眾藉此學習和欣賞高素質的古典音樂。

“What Films can do for Music”The superstars of Music as seen by Christopher Nupen(with the presence of Vladimir Ashkenazy)
An illustrated talk to be presented by producer and director of music documentaries:
CHRISTOPHER NUPEN (presentation in English)
Christopher Nupen began his broadcasting career at BBC Radio in 1962. As a result of his radio programmes, he was invited to move to television where he became the originator of a new kind of intimate classical music film, made possible for the first time by the invention of the first 16mm film cameras in the 1960s.
Nupen has been described as the undoubted master of the genre he pioneered and one whose work is an enduring source of musical delight. Much of his work has been built on intimate friendships with leading musicians resulting in DVDs which have captured for the many years to come, aspects of their life and work that will serve as reference to the future generations.
As a small sample of the extraordinary output generated by Nupen’s creative capacity and to serve as a preamble to his presentation which will follow at the City Hall Concert Hall, we are going to be showing the following films at the Recital Hall, City Hall High Block as per the schedule below,Sunday 19th Oct.

Andrew Walter是蜚聲國際的資深音響工程師，曾屢獲殊榮，
包括四次留聲機大獎(Gramophone Award)､多次ISRC獎項､
法国最具權威的古典音樂雜誌《Diapason d’Or》’Diapason
Historique’ 獎項及二次格萊美 (Grammy)提名。
Andy將帶領聽眾暢遊音樂之旅，以「回到未來」為主題，追遡早
至1898年所錄製的78張唱片，由LP唱片年代一直到灌製CD唱
片世紀。.他會向大家展示他在錄製唱片過程中所使用的”藝術
為本”的復原工具，及分享各種不同的項目。
Andy同時會以各種不同的音樂實例做輔助說明，其中部份乃相
當罕見的錄音檔案。他亦會利用圖表解說他如何進行唱片修複
工作。

Andrew Walter is one of the world’s foremost re mastering engineers with four Gramophone awards, multiple ISRC awards, the coveted French ‘Diapason Historique’ award and two Grammy nominations to his name.Andy’s talk will take the listener on a journey of sound - ‘Back to the future’ – from the earliest 78 disc recordings in 1898, through LP transfers and cutting to CD production. He will then discuss the advanced ‘state of the art’ restoration tools at his disposal and discuss various projects undertaken. Andy will have various musical examples – some of which are rare archival recordings that he will be using to illustrate his talk. He will also have graphical illustrations that he will use to demonstrate the forensic restoration work that he can do.

古典音樂紀錄片著名監製兼導演;CHRISTOPHER NUPEN呈獻 (講座以英文進行)
1962年，克里斯托費.努本(Christopher Nupen)在BBC電台
展開廣播職業之旅。隨後，基於其電台節目，獲邀轉往電
視部，1960年代，16毫米攝影機讓攝制變得更輕鬆安靜，
Chr istopher於此期間，拍攝近距離式古典音樂電影，繼而
奠定其日後被尊稱為這類電影的鼻祖地位。
勿庸置疑，努本(Nupen)被譽為開創流派先鋒的巨匠，他
的製作讓人深深體會到音樂所盛載綿綿無盡的喜悅。努本
(Nupen)大部份製作基於其和那些傑出音樂家們之間親密
無間的友誼，他的拍攝工作歷時多年，記錄下音樂家們生活和工作的細
節，製成DVD。這些DVD，成為後世參照的寶典。
我們將於大會堂高座演奏廳放映努本(Nupen)的部份影片(時間如下)，
亦籍此一窺大師卓然超羣的製作，並作為大師稍後講座的導言。
