The Digital Immigrant
Why we aren’t teaching for the
future…
Natives vs. Immigrants… Digital Natives:

• Constantly using technology on a daily basis
Digital Immigrants:• Teachers who have adapted to
use technology
• Trained to use technology through in-services and workshops

with curriculum instruction
• Use their methods and systems of communication
• Google, Wiki, Digital Cameras, IPods, AIM…
• Help them solve problems using technology as a resource
• Using games, internet, programs to guide their learning
Get Them Involved… Use technology as a means of testing
their knowledge• They have adapted to getting instant
feedback
• Quía quizzes, Wikispaces,
online computer games,
WebQuests
Responsibility and Technology…

making processes• In the classroom and school wide
• Find out how they want to use technology in your classroom

know and you will
learn in the process
Teaching for Tomorrow…
We teach for the past…we need to teach for the future…
• Teach them for what they will encounter… technology capabilities of the future
• Get speakers to talk to them about cutting edge technology…tape it…put it on the web!
• How can you provide your students with the uses of technology in your classroom?
Understanding Their Language… Technology in school and after school
• Understand their language• Cookies, blogs, wikis….
• Create a technology rich in school experience for your students
• Their out of school lives are full of technology
• Find their interests…harness the power
Helping them evolve…
Right now…• They have no voice on their
education
• Value their opinions and suggestions
• Major changes need to be made school wide and district wide
• Evolve with them…let technology serve a purpose in your classroom.
