Prophets of the DK

• The prophets during the Divided Kingdom– Obadiah – Judah in the days of Jehoram– Joel – Judah in the days of Joash– Jonah – Israel in the early days of Jeroboam II– Amos – Israel in the days of Jeroboam II & Uzziah– Hosea – Israel in the days of Jeroboam II & Uzziah– Isaiah – Judah in the days of Uzziah – Hezekiah– Micah – Judah in the days of Jotham – Hezekiah

The Good Kings

• Hezekiah – 2 Chron. 29:1; 2 Chron 26:5– There is perhaps a link to a good prophet,

Zechariah, as Zechariah was his grandfather• Jotham’s father was Uzziah• Uzziah’s father was Amaziah• Amaziah’s father was Joash• Joash was preserved by Jehoshabeath (2

Chron. 22:11)• Josiah - ???

Hezekiah’s Reforms

• 2 Chron 31:1 and 2 Kin. 18:4 mention that Hezekiah tore down the “high places”

• Hezekiah also reformed the worship in the temple

• He led by example and commanded the people to bring offerings for the priests

• The people brought and brought from the 3rd month to the 7th month

Hezekiah’s Reforms

• The people brought the firstfruits of grain, wine, oil, honey, oxen, and sheep

• There was abundance in the 3rd month• There were heaps that kept growing as the

people brought more offerings• There were store rooms built the excess• Hezekiah organized the priests for the work• Notice 2 Chr. 31:21

Hoshea’s Reign

• Hoshea was an evil king in Israel• Shalmaneser made him pay tribute• Hoshea conspired with So, king of Egypt, and

did not pay one year• Shalmaneser put him in prison• Shalmaneser began to seize Samaria, but

Sargon finished taking the city• It took three years to take Samaria

Israel Taken Captive

• After Samaria fell, Assyria removed the people from the city and took them to other cities in their empire

• Assyria brought in people from other nations to live in Samaria

• The people who came in did not obey God and offered sacrifices to their idols

• God sent lions to kill some of them

The Other Nations in the Land

• When the king of Assyria heard of the lions, he sent a priest to show them how to worship God

• The priest came to Bethel, but the people continued to serve idols

• They worshipped God and their idols• 2 Kin 17:34 sums this up

The Reason for the Captivity• Israel was taken captive because they sinned

against Jehovah• They followed after other gods, the gods of the

people of the land• They committed secret sin• They set up high places to worship idols• They ignored the warnings of the prophets• They offered human sacrifices• They rejected the covenant that God made with

them

Taken by Assyria in the days of Pekah (2 Kin. 15:29; 1 Chron. 5:25-26)
