DISTRICT 14-A 2017-18 District Governor
Wayne Bickel
Lions:
I want to thank you all for electing me to serve as your District Governor. It
is an honor to represent District 14-A. This district is known for its strong
leaders, and I plan on keeping it that way.
Our International President's motto is “WE SERVE.” As Lions that is
certainly what we do. With that theme in mind, I encourage each and every
one of you to ask yourselves just how or what can we do to meet his motto.
I will give you a few examples that come to my mind—perhaps rebuilding a
playground, building or refurbishing a child's bus stop shelter for the
inclement days, or possibly reading at a local school to the children. Use
your imagination and share your ideas with others.
As I've stated in my goals, I want to help our local veterans by collecting
clothing for them and their families. Anything from shoes to coats—all will
work well for them. I also want to see our district’s clubs help serve meals
at a soup kitchen or a local church to help those in need. We have over
fifteen hundred members in our district, so we have that many ideas that
we can share.
5
I look forward to visiting each club and Serving as your District Governor.
Where there's a need, there's a LION!!!
Yours in Lionism,
Wayne Bickel
Governor’s Goals for District 14-A

• Collect clothing for veterans in each club and connect each
club with a veterans’ distribution center to which items can
be donated
• Serve food in homeless shelters, soup kitchens, etc., to help
those less fortunate
• Encourage women to join our organization

NARESH AGGARWAL INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT
2017-18
Dr. Naresh Aggarwal, of Batala, Punjab, India, was elected to serve as
international president of Lions Clubs International at the association’s
100th International Convention, held in Chicago, Illinois, USA, June 30
through July 4, 2017. Dr. Naresh is chairman of companies specializing in
steel and agricultural products. A lifetime member of the Batala Smile Lions
Club since 1974, President Dr. Naresh has served with great distinction as
club president and international director. He also served as chairman of the
Council of Governors for MD 321 in 1989-90. Dr. Naresh served as
international director from 1998 to 2000. He earned great appreciation by
achieving significant membership growth while serving as Global
Membership Team area leader. He was a faculty and group leader for DGE
Seminars at three International Conventions. He also served as
international board appointee three times, and as Global Leadership Team
constitutional area leader (CA-6). Dr. Naresh is trustee and vice
chairperson of Lions Quest in India Foundation and has also served on the
National SightFirst Committee. He is the chief patron of Dainik Prarthana
8
Sabha, which operates charity projects in Batala. He is vice president of
Age-Care India, a charitable society for the care and welfare of elderly
people. He has been trustee and patron to many other projects. Dr. Naresh
has received 23 International President's Medals and the Ambassador of
Goodwill Award. He is a major lead gift donor and humanitarian partner of

Clubs International, Melvin Jones.

President’s Message:
A New Era Begins for Lions Progress can come with a steep price. As people worldwide enjoy fast
food and work non-strenuous jobs, diabetes has become a global crisis. My own nation, hardly wealthy, is a case in point. India is known as “the diabetes capital of the world” with a staggering 50 million people suffering from type 2 diabetes. The statistics in the United States are bleak as well. In New York, a city with access to fruits and vegetables, an estimated 800,000 adults—more than one in every eight—now have diabetes. Nationwide, the picture is even grimmer. One in three children born in the United States is expected to become diabetic in their lifetimes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The toll on society will be enormous. Diabetes can lead to heart disease, stroke, kidney damage and nerve damage. It also causes blindness. Lions Clubs International (LCI) will not sit on the sidelines as the disease mounts. We will be in the thick of efforts to prevent and treat the disease. At our 100thInternational Convention in July in Chicago we formally announced our new commitment to curtailing diabetes. Echoing Helen Keller’s appeal to Lions in 1925 at their convention to become Knights of the Blind, Keller Johnson-Thompson, Keller’s great grand-niece, urged Lions to take on this new challenge.
“Will you not constitute yourselves to continue to be Knights of the Blind in this crusade against darkness through your work with diabetes?” she asked tens of thousands of Lions near the end of the final plenary session.
The focus on diabetes is part of LCI’s new global service framework. We are directing our energies and resources toward vision, hunger, the environment, and pediatric cancer and diabetes. We’re building on our
9
traditions but also giving Lions new ways to serve. Lions can continue to support their local causes, of course, but we ask clubs and districts to contribute to the five areas of focus.
Johnson-Thompson dramatically rung the bell that was struck at the 1925 international convention to ring in Lions’ work with the blind and visually impaired. For 100 years Lions have always answered the bell. I am fully confident that we will rise to the challenge and fight back against the modern scourge of diabetes. Naresh Aggarwal Lions Clubs International President

Lions Code of Ethics
TO SHOW my faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious application to the end that I may merit a reputation for quality of service. TO SEEK success and to demand all fair remuneration or profit as my just due, but to accept no profit or success at the price of my own self-respect lost because of unfair advantage taken or because of questionable acts on my part. TO REMEMBER that in building up my business it is not necessary to tear down another’s; to be loyal to my clients or customers and true to myself. WHENEVER A DOUBT arises as to the right of ethics of my position or action towards others, to resolve such doubt against myself. TO HOLD friendship as an end and not a means. To hold that true friendship exists not on account of the service performed by one another, but that true friendship demands nothing but accepts service in the spirit in which it is given. ALWAYS TO BEAR in mind my obligations as a citizen to my nation, my state, and my community, as to give them my unswerving loyalty in word, act, and deed. To give them freely of my time, labor and means. TO AID others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance to the needy. TO BE CAREFUL with my criticism and liberal with my praise; to
build up and not destroy
94

LIONS NECROLOGY SERVICE
The ________________Lions Club meets in solemn tribute and mourning for their friend and fellow Lion _________________.
“Let your light shine before men, that they may see your works and give glory to your Father who art in heaven.”
The motto of Lionism is “WE SERVE”.
We are gathered to pay a final tribute to one of our brothers/sisters who, in the tradition of Lionism, has left his/her footprints in the sands of time.
The ___________ Lions Club has suffered the loss of a beloved member, a respected citizen of our Community, dedicated to the helping of his/her fellow man. And to serving his/her community through his/her club’s Endeavors. His/her passing is our great loss and a great loss to our community. His/her time and energy, so freely given will not soon be forgotten, not by his/her Club nor by those who have benefitted by his/her generosity, his/her hard work and his/her loving service.
LET US PRAY:
Heavenly Father, the only true source of joy, we thank Thee for the privilege of service. May the life of our brother/sister who we honor, inspire us to have more devoted obedience to thy commands.
Help us to put our trust in Thee, that we may obtain comfort and find grace to help in this, and every time of need.
AMEN.
This concludes our service of remembrance. The __________
Lions Club members and the community, which they represent,
extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family of Lion __________.
96
INVOCATIONS
Lord, as we Lions gather here,
We pause to offer up this prayer.
Bless now this food that we partake,
And every effort that we make.
To build the towns in which we live,
And put in our hearts to give to worthy causes.
Bless the blind, and all we do to serve mankind.
Be with us ‘til we meet again,
and bless our land and homes too. AMEN
Lord, look down upon us today,
As we labor in our Lions way.
Help us to learn all that we can,
Help us to serve our fellow man.
Be with us now as we break bread,
Good friends, together through life we tread.
We are Lions -Bless us Lord.
Make us all of one accord,
Serving others is what we do
For in serving them -we serve You. AMEN.
LIONS TOAST Not above you (glass up)
Not beneath you (glass down)
But with you! (Glass center ... Clink)
97
BENEDICTION
Heavenly Father -open our eyes and our hearts to the priorities set for us in Lionism.
As a people of Faith ~ may each day be a new beginning in service to our neighbors, our community and Your hurting world; may we always give freely and lovingly the gifts and talents that You have given us.
As we leave, walk with us, and place firmly in our hearts, those people You have called us to Serve.
And now, grant unto us the comfort, that Your love and peace will
sustain us until we meet again. AMEN.
