The Life and Death of Absalom

Absalom - means Father Is Peace

A very handsome young man . (2 Sam.

14:25)

Powerful soldier (brilliant military strategist)

born leader ( 2 Sam. 15 1-6) King Davids 3rd son

-His half brother Amnon raped his sister Tamar

-- He murdered Amnon and fled and went to

Geshur(3 years)

-The king and all his servants wept very bitterly.

David mourned for his son everyday (13:37)

- Joab perceived that the kings heart was concerned

about Absalom

- by Joabs manipulation, the king said to him Go

therefore, bring back the young man Absalom. Lethim return to his house , but do not let him see my

face.

- Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem

-Absalom requested Joab twice to send him to the king to

see the kings face but refused.

- Absalom told his servants to set Joabs field on fire.

- Joab came to Absalom and went to the king and told him.

- Absalom went to the king and bowed himself on his faceto the ground before the king. Then the king kissed

Absalom.

-Nothing happened as expected by Absalom

-Absalom stole the hearts of the people

-- He plotted to overthrow his own father

-- David fled and prepared an army to fight

against his own son

-- David said to Joab Deal gently for my sake

with the young man Absalom.

-There was a great slaughter (20,000 men died)

- battle spread over the face of all country

-- battle was fought in the forest of Ephraim

-Absalom riding on his mule, went under the thickbranches of an oak tree

--his head caught in the branches of an oak tree so hewas left hanging

-A man saw him, told Joab , he took three spears in

his hand , and thrust them into his heart

-- Joabs ten young men(armor bearer) surrounded

Absalom, struck and killed him, cast him into a large

pit in the woods and laid a very large heap of stones

over him

- When the king knew that Absalom was dead, he

was deeply moved, went up to the chamber over

the gate and wept and he said thus:O my sonAbsalom- my son, my son Absalom if only I had

died in your place! O Absalom my son, my son!

Moral Lessons For The Youth

Young people:

-You are filled with life

-- you have ambition

-- each one of you has big dreams for your

future

-- you want to have lots of money

-Do not allow your good looks to go to your headand your head swells

-- do not allow your pride and lust for power

cloud your reasoning badly

-- do not allow Satan to misuse you and abuse

Gods beautiful gift of your body

-- instead you present your bodies as a livingsacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is

your reasonable service(Rom 12:1)

Remember the following admonitions from

the bible:

-Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a

woman who fears the Lord is to be praised

- Jesus says All who exalts themselves will

be humbled but all who humbled will be

exalted.

--Pride goes before destruction and a haughty

spirit before a fall

Lesson for the Parents

The truth of the story captures the

ACHING we know as parents when lifedoes not work out well for our children:

-Failure of a marriagea life-altering

accident or illnessa career reversal or apain of a rebellious child

Absalom moments:

- When pain has crashed in upon us because

of events or decisions in the lives of those we

love and yet so powerless to effect any change

in the reality of their present distress

-when we must acknowledge that our child or

grandchild has made a foolish decision that will

now have terrible consequences, a choice that

often represents a total abandoning of the

core values that we have spent our lifetime

encouraging

- When we must admit, like David, we have a

child or a grandchild who has broken faith

with God and family, acted in a hatefulmanner, and has chosen to go away to a

place where he or she cannot or will not hear

our words of love and forgiveness

- When must acknowledge that the story of

Absalom is our story. For we too, rebel

against God. We choose to go our own way,turning from the truth and life we have

come to know through Jesus Christ.

Remember one thing David was willing todo.

-give up his life to save his son

-Is the very thing we believe God has donefor us through Jesus Christ

- For God so love the world that He give His

only son.(John 3:16)

This is good newsthis is the hope

of our salvation. Let us delight in this

truth.
