A New Year Poem

Another fresh new year is here…

Another year to live!

To banish worry, doubt, and fear,

To love and laugh and give!

This bright new year is given me

To live each day with zest…

To daily grow and try to be

My highest and my best!

I have the opportunity

Once more to right some wrongs,

To pray for peace, to plant a tree,

And sing more joyful songs!

—William Arthur Ward

A Note from Your Coordinator of

Lay Ministries Happy New Year! I hope 2013 brings lots of good things

your way.

Oftentimes a new year brings changes and that will be

the case here at First United Methodist Church. Holy

Conference will be meeting on Saturday, January 5th, to

discuss the new format and make plans for the new year

with these changes in mind.

You may already know that the committees will be re-

named Ministry Teams. The word “Committees” will

not be part of our vocabulary anymore. The Ministry

Teams will have designated responsibilities. Many of the

members of the teams will have two-year commitments

instead of three years. If you have been called to serve

on a Ministry Team, you are aware of the timeline chang-

es.

To help the Ministry Teams with their important work,

Cluster Groups will be assigned on a short-term basis to

complete tasks and projects. The Every Member in Min-

istry Menus will be used to fill these groups, and there

will also be opportunities for you to volunteer your work

on the Cluster Groups. When the tasks are completed, the

responsibilities of the Cluster Group for that particular

event will be done.

Ministry Teams will have new and returning members.

Shirley Birkenholz will send out reminders to you about

the date and time of your meetings. It will be important

for you to attend the meetings so the work of the team

can be done and decisions made with all of your input.

Mark the dates of your meetings on your calendar so it

will become a priority for you.

I would like to thank those of you who have served so

faithfully this past year in so many ways. I also want to

thank those of you who will be serving on the Ministry

Teams and Cluster Groups in 2013.

We’re looking forward to a good year with lots of new

and exciting things for our church family.

—Elsie Ulland,

Coordinator of Lay Ministries

Get Moving Faith is the word that describes the

direction our feet start moving when

we find that we are loved. Faith is

stepping out into the unknown with

nothing to guide us but a hand just

beyond our grasp.

Support for Our Military For the love and generosity shared by so many,

many of the congregation, the Nurture Committee/

Military Focus thanks you with all our hearts - and

with a special 'Shout Out' to the members of the U.

M. Men for their abundant contribution. We were

excited to be able to send gifts of remembrance at

Christmastime.

Of the 13 military persons who are connected in

some way to members of First UMC, 9 are actively

serving and the other 4 reserves could become

actively deployed again at any time.

We sent gift cards which they can spend at the PX

on any military base. Wouldn't it be fun to be a fly

on the wall and watch them shop!

You will find mailing addresses listed on page 7 of

this newsletter. Please be encouraged to send off a

personal note. They are sacrificing a lot to protect

us, so we want them to know that they are in our

prayers and in our minds.

God Bless Them, Every One!

For the Dark Times Lighthouses are now a

popular decorating

theme for living rooms,

calendars, cards, screen-

savers, towels and more.

Pastor Gary has collected

lighthouses for years and

has some on display in

his office. Many images

are infused with shim-

mering light to symbolize

Christian faith and hope.

Yet the purpose of a lighthouse isn’t to look pretty

against a sunny sky—although it does—but to illu-

mine a ship’s way beneath heavy, dark clouds or a

moonless night. Indeed, the lighthouse itself

doesn’t even light up until its surroundings grow

dark!

Surely Jesus loves to share our joys, and we praise

his glory during life’s bright times. But God’s pri-

mary purpose for coming to live among us was to

save us from the storm of sin; to illumine our path

through the darkness of death, in all its forms; to be

the light guiding all people safely home. Jesus’

light shines for us day and night, rain or shine, to

bless us with faith and hope.
