With Valen nes just around the corner,
how can the Region of Newell make your
special day a day to remember?
By William Slenders
The Month of Love
Picture content provided by Dinosaur Provincial Park
With the month of love already here, the age old ques on
arises again. “What do I do for my significant other this
year?” Many people think of chocolates, flowers,
jewellery, stuffed animals, or power tools (nothing says I
love you quite like a power tool). Joking aside, the month
of February and more importantly Valen ne’s Day is
bound in things more powerful than the projec on of gi s
for your significant other.
According to history, Saint Valen ne was imprisoned for
performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to
marry and for ministering to Chris ans during the mes of
the Roman Empire (Chris ans were persecuted at this
me by the Roman Empire). Before his sentence, a er
being captured by the Roman Empire, Saint Valen ne was
said to have healed his jailer’s daughter. According to
legend, Saint Valen ne wrote a le er to the jailer’s
daughter that sated “From your Valen ne” as a farewell
to her.
This act has since transformed itself into the Valen ne’s
Day that we know today where couples express feelings
by presen ng flowers, confec onery, and gree ng cards
or “valen nes”. These gi s signify the unique feelings
shared by couples. This year, why not try a new idea for
your special someone.
The Region of Newell is a beau ful, delicate landscape
that is frequently overlooked by most travelers. In the
most unique of places, there is beauty that connects
moments and experiences in ways that a typical and
average gi cannot. This year why not show your
significant other an experience that they will not forget,
and memories that will last a life me.
I need to take the stress away this year and I
don’t know what to do? Bed and Breakfasts
Nothing says relaxa on like a retreat away from it all. The
Region of Newell has a substan al number of Bed &
Breakfasts that would make an ideal loca on for a great
escape. Book a weekend stayca on and see what a retreat
can do for your special someone.

Hollywood movies ready to watch. A great place for a
couples getaway, the Oasis Theater is ready to make your

What about something with sports? Is there
anything that we can do?
Ben’s Bowling and Billiards
Why not go for a round of bowling? This is a great way to
spend some me with your significant other on
Valen ne’s Day and enjoy some friendly compe on. The
bowling alley is equipped with Neon Bowling and also has
Darts, and Pool or Billiards. This is a great ac vity in the
Newell region and will provide you with great excitement

before finally washing away beneath your feet in what
seems to be pure magic. Le in its trail are Hoodoo’s, the
natural erosion landscape. While Dinosaur Provincial Park
is an opportune summer des na on, it also makes for
beau ful wildlife watching and stargazing. The distance
between Dinosaur Provincial Park and the other
communi es is an advantage allowing for natural starlight
to fill the valley. The experiences of stargazing in this type
of light are magnified with the slight chill of a winter
evening. Stars are brighter, more beau ful, and more
memorable. On a special night, you can even catch a
glimpse of the Northern Lights as they fill the empty sky. A
truly breath taking landscape that can only really be
appreciated by those that have been there in person and
experienced it for themselves.
I need to find a place to eat that will top the
evening off. Where can I find it? Restaurants
So you need to find impressive places to eat? No problem. The
Region of Newell has many hidden gems that serve only the
best quality foods. The only ques on to ask is “what do you feel
like ea ng?”
I like steak, and nothing but the best steak
on my plate for myself and my significant
other. Where do I go to find an impressive
steak dinner in Newell?
The Patricia Hotel
Experience the relaxed, down home, rus c Western
charm of the Patricia Hotel in Patricia, Alberta. Built in
1915 the Patricia Hotel has experienced three addi ons to
the original structure including the famous Steak Pit. This
is undoubtedly one of the best places for authen c, great
quality steak. The Patricia Hotel (Located in the hamlet of
Patricia on the way to Dinosaur Provincial Park), is
uniquely themed and has few to rival its unique décor in
Newell.
Sunset Dinosaur Provincial Park
The park has an incredible view of the skies. The lookout of the
park is above the valley giving you a Birdseye view of the en re
park. As the fading light draws closer, the absence of human
development lets natural starlight fill the valley. The stars shine
clearer on a crisp winters night, so both sunset and stargazing will
be sure to make memories for this Valen nes Day.
Wildlife
The park is teeming with life! Full of
Mule Deer, colourful birds, and rich
in landscape, this is one experience
that will not disappoint!
Cowboys and Steak
As authen c as authen c can be, the
Patricia Hotel is a classic example of
western taste. Grab your steak and
fire it up on a grill. Cook it to your
perfec on, and enjoy the atmosphere. Water Hole Tavern
You wont be able to see every
piece of detail in this place. There
is so much to see that it will have
you coming back to see more!
Armando’s Bar & Grill

Italian dish for you and your significant other. A relaxed, gentle
atmosphere awaits you here at Armando’s. Book ahead to make sure that
you have a place wai ng for you, as space can fill quite quickly at
Armando's. Great food, great hospitality, great people.
Open Your Tastebuds to Western Flavour
The famous Patricia Hotel Steak Pit enables you to savour the
taste of a tender, juicy beef steak or genuine Buffalo Steak with
all the trimmings. You can also enjoy the taste of a 100% Buffalo
Burger or 6 oz. Beef Burger. With the Steak Pit, you grill your
steak to perfec on and enjoy the comforts of the Water Hole
Tavern.
Garth’s Restaurant and Bar
Come out and enjoy authen c western food in authen c
western se ngs. Enjoy the everyday lunch buffet
and western atmosphere. Welcome to a place where
everyone can enjoy me off with friends and enjoy a
beverage with the Ci es only Peanut Bar. If you want to
try your hand at a challenge this Valen ne’s day with your
significant other, try the 32 oz. steak challenge! It is a
32oz. steak with all the trimmings. Eat it in 20min or less
and we buy your dinner. Can’t eat it all that quickly? Enjoy
What about a really roman c restaurant? I
think authen c Italian food would be ideal.
Where can I find this in Newell?
Armando’s Bar & Grill
If it’s authen c Italian food, look no further than
Armando’s Bar & Grill in the Town of Bassano. Armando’s
has some of the best pasta in the Region of Newell and
creates everything from scratch and garden fresh
ingredients. Dishes look amazing on delivery and taste
be er than they look. The Restaurant is set in authen c
Italian fashion with great a en on to detail on every
piece. If you are up for a bit more of a wild side, check out
the Bar in the opposite side of the building. This bar has
something for everyone, and is commonly considered the
spot to be in Bassano. If romance and a great meal are
what you are looking for, Armando’s Bar & Grill will be
difficult to beat.
Authen c Ea ng
Garth’s Bar & Grill is authen c for
its selec on of western dishes. Try
the 32oz. Steak challenge if you
are feeling bold!
Armando’s Bar
Have some energy a er supper? Why
not spend a li le me at Armando’s
bar? Play a few rounds of pool. Enjoy a
drink with friends, or even just sit and
relax in a comfortable atmosphere.
Garth’s Bar & Grill
A great loca on with excellent service
and wonderful hospitality. Garth’s has
something for everyone and makes for
an ideal place to take your significant
other this Valen nes Day.
What about something for a quick ou ng?
Are there any great speciality places in
Newell?
The Steaming Cup
This is an intricately decorated and social gathering of the
Brooks downtown. The drinks selec on of both hot and
cold beverages will amaze and astonish you. The customer

the drinks that they serve. This loca on makes a great
se ng for a date, mee ng, or even gathering. The next
me you are down in the Brooks Downtown, stop in at the
Steaming Cup and try a specialty drink.
Whether you are giving the gi of love or friendship, the
Region of Newell has many exci ng things that can turn
your valen nes into a memorable experience for both you

and the days of importance drawing closer, we all come to

An increased focus on performances, expanded season, programming and securing of a permanent venue will all be celebrated by Tumbleweed Theatre on Saturday, February 9 in Brooks.
“The celebration is our opportunity to announce all kinds of exciting Tumbleweed-related projects and events that will take us through 2013 and well into our tenth anniversary year in 2014,” said Tumbleweed Theatre president Cathryn Krochak.
The theatre company’s executive recently made the decision to enter into an agreement to take over their existing lease space.
“What was formerly known as ‘the lease space’ will now be officially known as ‘The Tumbleweed Theatre’,” added Krochak.
Tumbleweed co-founder Michael Glynn Macdonald said the celebration event is a free one for anyone wishing to tip a glass or hear the latest Tumbleweed news.
“The community is what has kept us going for a decade and we want to celebrate with as many members and supporters as we can,” he said. While the event is free, reservations are required.
“We’d like to get a handle on how many people to expect,” said Macdonald.
Free food will be on hand, as well as some light entertainment.
The Tumbleweed Theatre is located at 604 Cassils Rd. West at Cassils Plaza Mall. Behind Safeway, next to Movie Experts.

Arts and Culture
Arts and Culture Craze Sage Brush Arts & The Association of Arts William Slenders | The Newell Regional Tourism Associa on
“If art is to nourish the roots of our culture, society
must set the ar st free to follow his vision
wherever it takes him”
John F. Kennedy
These words speak true to the nature of arts and
culture in the Region of Newell. Arts and culture has
been an item of interest to a select few in our
communi es despite the wide selec on of natural
wonders, landscapes, and environmental and
historical inspira on. It seems that despite the large
selec on of inspira on at our doorstep, there are
s ll many issues rela ng to the promo ons and
facilita on of arts and culture in our region.
The Sage Brush Arts Group is a collec on of ar sts,
sculptors, and ar sans. Each of their 23 members
offers a significant point of view and contribu on
into the ar s c heart of the Region of Newell. The
members contribute to intricate arts displays through
western themes, graphite drawings, oil and latex
pain ngs, sculptures, and the many murals displayed
throughout the City of Brooks. Each of these 23 ar sts
has, in one form or another, le their legacy in the
Region of Newell. Now the Sage Brush Arts Group is
planning to do more than ever before in 2013. In
development are plans for large displays for Na onal
Aboriginal Days, the July 1st Canada Day with the City
of Brooks, and Alberta Culture days in September.
With many events on the books, Sage Brush Arts will
be busy this year showcasing the various art forms and
events. With a recent Annual General Mee ng, Linda
Wilson is the groups Chairperson. Secretary is Bob
Franz, and Treasurer is Mara Nesbi . If you are
interested in joining this group, contact 403‐378‐3441.
There is also a new coordina on group being
created for the arts and culture scene. This
organiza on, The Associa on of Arts, is created to
encourage people to connect through the value of
arts and culture in the community as a means to
encourage the growth and sustainability of local arts
and culture groups. The Associa on of Arts is asking
for a representa ve from all arts and culture
organiza ons to form a core group to facilitate the
coordina on and communica on of arts and culture
events. This is the goal of the new organiza on to
make it easier for fundraising, promo ons, and
support for arts and culture in the Region of Newell.
In prepara on for this request, The Associa on of
Arts will be sending out a survey to all arts and
culture groups within the community. If you are
missed contact Mara Nesbi for more informa on
on how to become involved.
