FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 12, 2015

PD Reflections,

My first job was in delicatessen. I worked in the kitchen washing pots and pans and peeling potatoes. I would listen to the radio and hear a sports show. Much of the conversation was baseball. The owner of the shop was a German American and he introduced me to the truly international sport of soccer, or futbol. Last Sunday many people around the world watched the World Cup Final between Japan and the US, it was a most surprising beginning. I often say that sports is the original "reality" show However, soccer matches especially late in a tournament are often low scoring events but Sunday the US scored twice in the first five minutes and was ahead 4-0 before Japan scored. The local flavor to the team was great for the people of New Jersey. We will continue to see the players on television as they enjoy the achievement of being the best in the world. Over the years I have gained an appreciation for soccer. I saw Pele and the Cosmos at Giants Stadium and attended several World Cup matches at the Meadowlands in 1994. It was a wonderful experience to just walk around stand, see people of various countries carrying their flags and dressed in the colors of their team. Over the years sports find a way into my reflections. When I think of faith and sports I am reminded of a story attributed to Yogi Berra. While catching for the Yankees a player came up to bat and made the sign of the cross. Yogi asked, "Why don't you just let God enjoy the game?" I think God enjoyed the game on Sunday. I know I did. To raise funds for our church’s air conditioning project, raffle tickets will be available for purchase next weekend, July 18 - 19 after all Masses.

A Lucky Weeks Club raffle ticket costs $20 only and gives 21 chances to win – 14 weekly drawings for $50 each starting Sept 30, 2015, and on Simbang Gabi, Dec 18, 2015, 4 drawings for $150 each and 3 drawings for $50 each. Winning tickets are returned to the pool and thus get a chance to win again. All drawings will be held at Szelest Hall at 7:30 pm on Wednesdays. Winners need not be present.

You can buy tickets from the Rectory (384-0557) or contact Marichi, 201-385-8529, Malu 201-387-9140, or Jess, 201-233-4656.

MASS SCHEDULE

In January of this year, the daily mass schedule was changed to one mass from Monday through Friday at 8. AM. The feedback I have received indicates that this was not a good move. The 8 AM mass was too late for some and too early for others. Attendance has been about half of what it was as people have found more convenient times in other parishes. Also the lack of masses has frustrated many people who want to get Mass cards for the deceased or honor family members with a mass on a special day. After consulting with Fr. Michael and Fr. Carey, I announce that we will return to the former schedule on September 8th, after Labor Day. Those with mass intentions for the 8 AM will be given the option of choosing either time. Another change that has been recommended by the staff is to return to the 7:45 AM mass on Sundays. I am looking for feedback on this change. The reason that the 7:45 AM mass was established was the fact that the Religious Education Program meets at 9 AM. The earlier mass is better for those catechisms who would like to go to the mass. It also makes the parking situation more manageable. Thirdly the earlier mass allows our music director to both play at the mass and also lead the PACT program. Fr. Pat

Here are some of the good deeds that the children of St. Mary’s did as a way of showing their love of God and of our parish. We hope that they will always know how important what they do for God and for us truly is. Even though they are still young, they can give us a wonderful example to follow. “I said my prayers.” “I helped someone.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Stewardship Prayer

Dear Lord, O Divine Giver of all gifts, grant us the daily graces we need to follow closely in the footsteps of Jesus in the way we live out our lives and make use of our gifts. Daily, may we renew with You our small part of the world by allowing Your will to be accomplished in and through us. Help us to trust in Your love for us and to grow in our fidelity and relationship with You. We thank You for the trust You place in us as stewards of our personal gifts. May the Holy Spirit guide us in placing our time, talent and treasure at the service of each other so that together we may faithfully witness the Christian message and thus become your holy people.

Amen.
