AnimalsTaiwan is an island. Because of that, animals in Taiwan have special looks and habits. Here are some special animals in Taiwan.

The birds in front of the picture are “Mikado Pheasants”

Mikado pheasantMikado pheasant is endemic to mountainous regions of Taiwan. It has a red face and dark blue body. It feeds on fruits, leaves, vegetation, seeds and other invertebrates. This kind of bird is founded by a Japanese in early 20th. The word “Mikado” means the emperor of Japan.

Swinhoe's pheasantSwinhoe's pheasant was first discovered by Robert Swinhoe, that's where its name comes. Swinhoe's pheasant is endemic to Taiwan.Its food is similar to Mikado pheasant.

Formosan black bearFormosan black bear is a subspecies of the Asian black bear. There's a V shaped pattern on it's chest. Formosan black bear is the largest animal in Taiwan. Different to other bears, Formosan black bears don't hibernate.

Formosan sika deerThis subspecies of sika deer is in dangered. In 17th, Dutch killed millions of sika deers for their fur. In 1969, Formosan sika deers are generally thought to be "Extinct in the Wild." Now, this kind of deer lives in the Taipei Zoo, Kinmen, Green Island, and Kenting National Park.

Formosan sika deer has been printed on the NT500 banknote.

Oncorhynchus masou formosanus

This kind of salmon is extremely different to the others-- it lives in the river instead of the ocean. It's a subspecies from the Oncorhynchus masou, a kind of salmon that lives in Japan. Because of the water pollution, the salmon lives only in Chichiawan River, a river located in Shei-Pa National Park.

Butterflies in TaiwanTaiwan is called the "Butterfly kingdom" because it's full of beautiful and gorgeous butterflies.

Formosan clouded leopardFormosan clouded leopard was the second largest carnivore in Taiwan. The leopard was first discovered in 1862. After that, no leopard has been discovered in Taiwan. In 2013, the government declared that Formosan clouded leopard has extinct.

PlantsOn our currency, you can see plum blossom, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum. In Chinese culture, they're called "the four gentlemen." In Taiwan, there are some unique plants, too. Let's find out.

Cirsium kawakamiiThis mysterious plant lives in high mountains and is an endemic species in Taiwan. Cirsium kawakamii is thought to be a kind of medicine. In Nantou, there are several places planting Cirsium kawakamii.

Taiwan quillwortTaiwan quillwort is a kind of fern that's in extremely dangered. There are alive Taiwan quillwort living in Dream Lake, Yangming mountain.

Plum blossomPlum blossom is the national flower of the ROC. 200 years ago, the Chinese brought plum blossom to Taiwan.You can see plum blossoms in the mountains located at northern and central Taiwan. There is a picture of plum blossom on theNT100.

OrchidIn Taiwan, you can see orchid flowers in southern and central Taiwan. Orchid Island, an island located at the south east of Taiwan island, is famous for its orchid flower ,too. Taiwan has progressive technology on planting orchids, so Taiwan is also called the "Orchid kingdom."

BambooBamboo comes from China and Myanmar. There are over 170 kinds of bamboos in Taiwan. Zhushan, located in Nantou, is famous for its bamboo forests.

ChrysanthemumChrysanthemum comes from China. You can se

e chrysanthemum planted in central and southern Taiwan. Over the years, the cultivated area of chrysanthemum are all in the first place. It's the main flower which had sold oversea in Taiwan, too.

MountainMillions of years ago, Taiwan island has pushed up by plates, so there are many tall mountains in Taiwan. The highest one is Jade mountain. It's over 3000 meters high.

J ade mountainJade mountain is the highest mountain in Taiwan. About 3950 meters high. It's enviroment creates unique animals and plants. There are Yushan National Park and a group of indigenous people called Bunun in Jade mountain.

Yuahan National ParkYushan National Park is the second national park of the

ROC. It locates in the mountains of central Taiwan. There are many kinds of creatures in there. You can also see a famous remain " Batongguan Trail" in the park.

BununBunun is a group of indigenous people which lives in Jade mountain. There are many holidays like Adult Festival, Millet planting Festival, and Hunting Festival in Bunun culture. Bunun can sing a mysterious song called Pasibutbut.

singingWhen the Millet festival is coming , Bunun will sing, dance, and make mysterious ~Woo~ sound to do the singing. Because the song is too complicated for others to learn,Pasibutbut is still a mystery.

Taiwan Bunun ChorusThe Bunun chorus is formed by many Bunun children , they all have a clear and comfortable sound . When they step on stages, we can see their confidence in their eyes. In May fifteen 2010, they sang in Shanghai World fair . They are the glory of Taiwan.

Ali mountainAli mountain, located at southern Taiwan, is famous for the beautiful views and Zhou culture. There is a railway in Ali mountain that carries guests around.

ZhouZhou is the one of the biggest native tribe in Taiwan. They live in southern and central Taiwan. The group has many festivals just like the Bunun.
