YOU CAN NOT CHANGE THE WIND, BUT YOU MUST ADJUST THE SAILS.Changes are happening around us. Nowadays; the changes demand us to respond quickly and appropriately. Adaption is a must. Comprehend and commit to everything we do in our life and life will make us able to survive.

The ierce competition make us cannot make any mistakes in taking steps ahead. If we do, we will be discarded by the competitors. We have to able

adapting ourselves in the changing environment to reach our goal and objectives.

THE IMPORTANCE OF COMPREHEND AND COMMITMENTThere are two important things that need to be done in

the stage of adaption. Comprehension and commitment are the important elements within this changing environment. Without comprehension on the things we do, we will not able facing the changing environment and the ierce competition.

A commitment is also important since it includes many things, such as willingness to sacriice, the spirit of never give up when facing it challenges.

THE LAW OF CAUSALITY In this universe there is law of causality. What we do

today will have an effect in the future. By believing this law, we will try to work hard and smart in achieving our goal. This believe also make us try inding the solution rather than easily blaming other people or the X-factors which is part of God authority.

But most thing happens are the other way around. We often blame other people and at the end of the day blames the

God Almighty. In fact, all bad things happen to us actually are the result out of our efforts and deeds in the past. So, what is happening now is part of the consequences of what we did.

BE PRAISE THE GODIndonesia is a big nation which is fulilled by the rich

natural resources. The abundant amass of resources given by the God Almighty is stretch out inside the earth and under the deep blue sea.

Finally, to face the uncertain conditions lies ahead, we should keep innovating. Mind your goal and be persistent with your commitment by able accepting any consequences of your decision, whether it is the good one or the bad one. Try to comprehend your task by keep learning and innovating as well as adjusting yourself in changing environment and facing challenges in the future.

There are about 152 traditional houses/buildings in the village. They are called‘Bale Tani’,a local language for “Farmer’s House”. What makes the houses unique is the material they are made of. The main materials are clay and plaited bamboo.Buffalo drop is used to prevent the clay from peeling off or cracking.

The village has a population of 700 people and has a distinct Sasakhand wovencloth. Virtually all women in Sade works as cloth weaver who produce Sasakclothes and handcrafts such as necklace, bracelet, and other Lombok speciic souvenirs. All the men work as farmers. The houses in that village follow generally the same pattern and shape. The size of the houses is also relatively uniform: around 7 x 5 m2. All houses are facing toward the Rinjani Mountain, which is regarded as sacred mountain where the ancestors’ spirits live. The style, characteristic, and the direction the houses face serve as a symbol which describes how the villagers interact with the environment and simultaneously how they conceive their lives through their houses.

Dayak Bidayuh is one of the Dayak sub clan in West Borneo .Dayak Bidayuh live in Desa Sebujit , Bengkayang regency , West Borneo, more

precisely in the border of Indonesia and Serawak (Malaysia) . In general they rely more on Malaysia to sustain their economics , with selling their product , even into laboring. There is a reason why Suku Dayak Bidayuh choose to rely on Malaysia , it is because the access to Malaysia is much more easier and much more closer than their regency capital. About 90% of them know more about Malaysian product. No wonder if they knowing more about other country than their own. Still another problem due to the hard access into their location is the education, average Dayak Bidayuh people only pass the elementary school program and still got a signiicant number of illiterate people. Knowing that the government only provide some teacher and building for elementary level. And only people with better economic condition can send their children into next level of education, still they go to Malaysia as the closest . Their activities were almost all done in the traditional way and rely more on agriculture as the main producer.

PAGI BERBAGI

Share of Happiness in A Box of Rice

Have you ever heard about ‘Pagi Berbagi’? For some Netizens, this word should be familiar. This is a social movement in sharing the happiness with the less fortunate ones by giving the boxes of rice for them in the morning.

It starts from awareness that there are many less fortunate people around us to be help. They are homeless people, blue

color workers on the street and at the market, the orphanage children and many more. We should not lay the burden on the government only since there is also our obligation in sharing the happiness with them.

Some youngster, Landhes (Semarang), Edo (Jogja) and Arin (Solo) spark those ideas on the Twitters. Soon

after, fortunately, they have the same intention. They are willing to help and share the happiness with those less fortunate ones. But the question rose, how to make the social movement with the simple things that could be followed and implemented easily by anyone? After some online discussion, then it comes up with the idea of sharing the happiness by sharing the breakfast for them through the boxes of rice.

Having a conversation with the so-called Joger duo is a kind of experience that is illed with laughter. Their mastery of processing and turning words upside down has been able to create new, funny, but relective words. Different from other entrepreneurs who ‘insist’ on making progress and meeting their targets, Joseph Theodorus Wulianadi (the founder of Joger) instead wants to instill the importance of a balanced as well as moderate attitude in life. He also doesn’t pass on any particular recipe to his son, Armand Setiawan, to assume the leadership mantle of JOGER. He only wants things to go just the way they are.

Visiting Bali will be incomplete without bringing JOGER uniquely designed T-shirts as souvenirs for your loved ones. It seems that customers ind the T-shirts, popular with funny words printed on them, highly interesting. It is no surprise then that every day we will ind long queues created in front of the cashiers at Joger outlet.

“Hello, I am Armand,” a young man greeted the Zes when we paid a visit to Joger ofice in Kuta, Bali. Armand Setiawan a.k.a. Joger Junior is the son of Joseph Theodorus Wulianadi, the founder of Joger. “If some people say I am here to help my parents, they must be wrong,” he opened the conversation. “Instead, I am here helped a great deal by my parents. Well, you can say that we are trying to help each other here,” told Armand, who studied retail management in Australia.

Talking about carrying on the torch of leadership from his father, Joger Junior said his father left no special recipe whatsoever. “We are only trying to help each other. At the moment, the leadership is still assumed by my father. You can say about 110% decision is his to make,” he said jokingly.

Still, added Armand, innovation as a response to the ever-changing market conditions was highly important. He illustrated that JOGER now has a product line called Joger Eks, which stands for Joger Eksklusif (Exclusive Joger). “This idea crossed my mind when I found out that many of my friends in Australia, most of them are well-to-do people, knew literally nothing about Joger,” remembered Armand, a graduate of Chinese language studies at Kuang Chou University.

It seemed, he observed, that Joger was only found attractive by middle-class consumers and had not reached out to the minds of high-class ones. “It is why I decided to make Joger Exclusive with better fabric quality and higher prices,” he explained. “Surprisingly, the market shows remarkable response.”

He also made unique breakthroughs by giving free

gimmicks. “I once studied that consumers like something that is given for free,” he told. And since Joger had never made any such gimmick, “I came up with the idea of Joger Sandal which gives one free left-foot sandal for every right-foot sandal purchase,” he said lightheartedly. The unique thing was, the market reacted positively to the gimmick.

Moderate Living Brings Peace

“Good morning, selamat pagi!” greeted a middle-aged man while entering the room where we were talking. He is Joseph Theodorus Wulianadi or Joger Senior. Selamat Pagi is a distinctive greeting that Pak Joger says to every guest of his outlets throughout a day, meaning it is also said even at noon and evening.

When asked about his business recipe, including his way of passing on the originality lavor of Joger to his son, Joger Senior replied instead by elaborating on his philosophy of life. “The most important thing is we should live moderately and in balance.”

He further explained his concept of three levels of good deeds: minimum-level, optimum-level, and maximum-level good deeds. At the irst level, we should refrain ourselves from taking away other people’s rights. At the second one, we are expected to help other people when we have already met our own needs. Last but not least, at the third-level deeds we have reached a point where we help other people by sacriicing our own interests. “I advise you choosing the second-level one. This doesn’t mean that I am against those who want to achieve the third level. It’s just that I think the third level is only meant for prophets,” he opined.

It is the same philosophy of life that forms the core value of Joger in developing its business. Currently, Joger has around 300 permanent ‘family members’ (the term Joger uses to call its employees) and 2,000 outsourced workers involved in the production process. “It is the reason I didn’t agree when the local people prohibited outsiders or migrant people from doing business in Kuta. Just look at me for example. I was born in Denpasar but I’m now doing business in Kuta. If I shut down my business, thousands of Kuta people involved in the production process surely will lose their jobs and livelihoods,” he illustrated.

The consistency of Joger in maintaining the brand of Joger in Bali also serves well to preserve the originality as well as sustain the life of the brand itself. Joger products cannot be purchased outside Bali. It means that persons wearing Joger products must be those who have once taken a vacation to Bali. This is also based on the philosophy of living moderately instead greedily.

Discussing about how they protect their copyrights, the Joger duo simply dismissed it as a problem. “Copyrights exist because they are created instead of merely registered,” explained Joger Junior. “Besides, the ones guilty are those imitating our products, not ourselves. So, why should we worry?” added Joger Senior.

However, recalled Joger Senior, they indeed in 1999 paid a visit to fake outlets that sold their brand in order to educate the copycats. “We only did that out of complaints from the kids here since back then many travel agents instead brought their tourists to the fake outlets.” At the end, the duo still believes that consumers will come to the real Joger outlet to get the original products.

So, Joger turns out to be a genuinely unique business,

thanks to its strong philosophy of life. What a true example of how good morality can generate endless streams of income!

JOGER in a Glimpse

The brand of Joger was oficially used on January 19, 1981. The name itself is a combination of two names, Joseph and Gerhard Seeger, the latter is the schoolmate of Joger Senior in Germany who gave Joseph the money as a wedding gift. Joger opened its irst outlet, named Art & Batik Shop Joger, on Jalan Sulawesi 37, Denpasar. In 1983, Joger opened another outlet on the same street before expanding to Kuta by

opening its third and last outlet on Jalan Raya Kuta in 1986.

Blanco Renaisance MuseumWelcome to the Amusing World of Blanco

Entering Museum Blanco, you will ind an atmosphere that is different from other museums in general. Throw away the impression that a museum must be cold, boring, and not fun. Touring around the museum, you will deinitely be amazed and even laughed out loud at the same time. What is so unique about this museum, you may inquire? Just read on.

Located in the hillside area and right on the side of a bridge, the museum has an entrance gate that at a glance seems invisible. However, once you enter the museum ad go upstairs, you will ind a palace-like museum called Blanco Museum.

Even the museum’s yard is unique. Unlike the deserted atmosphere commonly found in other museums’ yards, Blanco’s Museum instead is lively with the tweets of Balinese rare birds, such as jalak (starling bird) and kakaktua (cockatoo).

Meaningful Building “Although the museum building seems to be of European-style, it is actually full of the philosophy of Balinese culture,” explained Mario Blanco, the son of Antonio Blanco, who runs the museum at the moment. According to him, every part of the museum, and even the yard, had its respective philosophical signiicance.

In general, the museum building consists of three parts. This is in line with Bali’s natural philosophy of Tri-Hitakarane, which means God, Earth, and Water. The top structure represents a space for God, the middle one represents a space for Earth, and the fountain in the yard represents water.

On the dome of the building, we can ind a four ear-shaped statue that represents the ears of Antonio Blanco and his beloved wife. “This means that Papah (Daddy) and Mamah (Mommy) hope they will still be able to hear any criticisms as well as praises addressed to the building even though they have passed away.”

The dome represents tudung saji (cone-shaped cover) that is employed to cover dishes for kings. In Bali, every gift or dish of food presented to kings shall be covered by tudung saji. According to Mario, the museum is the gift from Antonio Blanco as a source of inspiration for Balinese culture. Antonio indeed had every reason to be grateful to Bali as the 2 hectare-area on which the museum is built is also granted to him by the King of Ubud.

At the entrance gate, we can also ind ire-shaped relic, which is actually the signature of Antonio Blanco. Meanwhile, at the stairs, we will be welcomed by a couple of dragons tangling the edges of the stairs. “According to some people who have psychic talents, the mystical guardians of the area are reportedly of dragon-shaped. Therefore, the relic is adjusted with the assumption,” inserted Mario.

Artistic Composition Entering the museum building, we will be welcomed into the unique world of Blanco. There is not a single window in the huge room. This is a deliberate attempt to make a clear separation between the real world and the world of Blanco. The paintings are also arranged and exhibited in a highly unique way. “If we pay attention to the composition, to how the paintings are arranged, it is different from the arrangement that you will ind in other galleries,” claimed Mario. In Museum Blanco, the paintings are displayed slightly above the eye level, creating an impression that it is the paintings that stare at the visitors than the other way around. Moreover, the paintings exhibited above and those exhibited below seem to have a mixed categorization. “This is inspired by the movements of Balinese dances, which is always harmonious despite their up and down movements,” exposed Mario. Surprisingly, Mario’s statement rings true as the exhibited pictures are remarkably harmonious, especially since the frames are in sync with the paintings themselves. As a result, all of the paintings look like 3D paintings that want to tell stories.

Meaningful and Amusing Works “Antonio Blanco’s works are possible to have fun with,” Mario said light-heartedly. “For example, how many bottles can you see in the paintings?” asked Mario while showing a painting titled Eve’s Apple, which depicts a foreign woman lying down without her clothes on. According to a layman’s eyes, there are a total of four bottles, namely three in the frame and one in the picture itself. “You are wrong,” said Mario. “We have not put into account the other two bottles in forms of the breasts of the woman in the picture,” he smilingly explained.

There is also a picture of Michael Jackson titled Black or White. A hat, one of the distinctive features of the pop megastar, is put on its frame. Another uniqueness that Michael Jackson has is the fact that he was a black-colored man who had his skin operated to be white-colored. Also, he was a veggie. “Before we put this hat down, I want to ask you irst: can you guess the color of Michael’s genital?” To conirm the answer, he then opened the hat to show an orange-colored small carrot. “This is Papah’s interpretation since he was a veggie himself,” quipped Mario.

Some illustrations above can give us a picture of how Antonio’s works are playful and amusing. “We indeed deliberately come up with the concept, so that the museum can become a recreational place as well instead of a mere place to study,” said the father of Antonio Blanco Junior. It is no wonder that visitors can ind several rare Balinese birds in the museum’s yard. In this way, the visitors can relax while enjoying the beautiful sights of the rare birds.

So, if you come to Bali, just free up some of your time to visit Museum Blanco in Ubud. There, you will ind that it is possible to study and have fun at the same time!

Due to increasing demand for healthy live and sustainable environment, the modern farming is now shifting to organic one as part of the green movement. In line with the green movement, the restaurants actually should protect their customers out of the dangers of non-organic food by providing them with non-chemical ingredients. Pulau Kelapa, in Ubud, Bali, is one of the restaurants that offers those healthy food and environmentally sound farming.

A ccording to Wikipedia, Organic farming is the form of agriculture that relies on nature friendly

techniques such as crop rotation, green manure, compost and biological pest control. Organic farming excludes or strictly limits the use of manufacture (synthetic) fertilizers, pesticides (which include herbicides, insecticides and fungicides).

“For sure, we want to provide our customer with non-chemical ingredient because we do know the long-term effect of the toxics for human body,” said Pak Lambon, the chef at the Restaurant. Therefore, he

said, there are many plants in the backyard of the restaurant that used for herbs and ingredients of the meal served.

According to Lambon there is not easy maintaining the plants in organic way. “We cannot use the pesticide that could harm the environment while there were the insects attacking them,” he explained. “We also used the organic compound as fertilizer so the soil will able to support itself in adsorbing the nutrition from the environment that at the end of the day will be taken by the plant.”

Sustainable environmentSurely, it is quite dificult task. It takes time for

the soil to be ready for planting after mixed with organic compound. “The production capacity also un-predictable,” Lambon said. “Ones it could exceeding the demand but in other time it could be failed since the severe attack of pests or extreme weather luctuation.” Still, Pulau Kelapa believes that this movement should be taken since apart for it food safety it also important for preserving the environment. “Imagine if the entire restaurants in Bali or in the world using organic food, we will able preserve the environment by maintaining nature ecosystem that will effect sustainable living in the future,” Lambon said. Therefore, no wonder if Pulau Kelapa has strong determination to provide organic food and organic farming with any cost.

Indonesian Slow-Cooked Food

At Pulau Kelapa, the food served is Indonesian food. “By opening this restaurant we would like to introduce the wide range of Indonesian food which stretch out from Aceh, Padang, Jakarta, to Bali, Lombok and Makassar,” he said. Therefore, there is also different thematic food every day. “For instance, today our specialty is Rawon (traditional meat soup from Java) and the next day will be randang (cooked meat from Padang),” he explained. The Indonesian food chosen because it is in line with organic food since most of the menus are slow-cooked food that able to maintain the nutrition on the ingredients used. “So it will be useless if we are using organic food but we prepare them in such ways that destroy the nutrition on the organic ingredient,” he said.

Lambon said the funny things happened when the foreign tourist (bule) try to eat the meal separately as they usually do with European food which consist of at least three course: appetizer, main food and dessert. “Actually, we, as Indonesian, usually mixed them up with steam rice (nasi) as one course food,” he smiled.

Food Harvest and Cooking Experience

Moreover, Pulau Kelapa is not only providing the organic food but also giving the experience for the customer in harvesting their own ingredient and cook them by themselves. With 80 are (Balinese square meter) or around 8000 square meter land, there is quite enough space for cultivating and harvesting the plant in the back yard. There lies paddy (rice) ield, farmer shelter ( gubug), small river with vegetables and herbs planted on the ield.

“It reminds us about the life in the village,” Lambong smiley said “We do believe this is one of the ways in giving insight to the customers how important the organic food and organic farming are for them,” Lambong said.

According to him, by showing the way how to harvest the fruits, vegetables and herbs, people will realize how hard to serve the food they had eaten on their table. Not to mention how to cook them in proper way so the nutrition will be remains on the meals prepared.

“We do hope this noble experience will give them insight and faith to put away their junk food and fast food and shift to slow-cooked organic food for their own healthy life,” Lambon expect. Moreover, he said, hopefully it will also entice the customer on the importance of organic farming in preserving the environment for sustainable living in the future.

White Crater

Ciwidey

The White Crater Ciwidey is one of the Tourist destinations in West Java; It’s a huge crater which is

located at Patuha Mountain in South Bandung, West Java. The crater called white crates as the water that contain the sulphur illed that crater and make a white colour relection. It’s around 2434 meters above the sea level with temperature around 8 to -22 Celcius.

Words and Photos by Linda

The location is not far from Bandung, it’s about 47 km from the town. If you drive from Jakarta through the Cipularang Highway, take Kopo Soreang exit and take to the right from the junction and follow the sign to the location which is about 30 km.

The area is amazing and beautiful; the air in the surrounding area is still very clean although with the sulphurs smells, the place is nice place to be visited. Imagine the place like that with the fog, its make this place like an angel kingdom, but there is full of mystery behind that.

There is a story that the Patuha Mountain is come from word of Tua (elder person), the mountain is sacred and no one has courage to enter to this area in the past. The mountain is believed as a place of the soul of the elders and ‘God’ kingdom place, whoever comes there, he/she will die or fall to the bottom of the earth. Even the animal or bird doesn’t want to ly to that area, because of the God power.

The beauty of this area is found in 1837 by the Germany-Dutch botanical expert, Dr. Franz Wilhem Junghuhn (1809-1864), when he started his journey to the South from Bandung to the mountain to search the entire lora alive in Indonesia, especially near Bandung. He came to the village near the crater area and being told that story by the local about the sacred mountain. But he did not believe at all, He continues his journey, through the forest, and climb the area. In the middle of his way, he was amaze with the surrounding and he saw a huge lake with white greenies water inside the lake. From the lake, he saw small larva spurting and he smelt sulphur. There is a reason why the animal will go there, strong smell come from the sulphurs.

The Warung itself was opened on 26 December 2011 and by now it has been visited by many local or foreign customers.

Warung Bu Ageng provides some ‘omahan’ food. Omahan food is the traditional food that usually served at many household in Java. Ibu Ageng cooks the meals herself. Her specialty is Nasi Campur (or mixed rice). Why mixed rice? There is philosophy behind the simple mixed rice.

A plate of Nasi Campur consists of many ingredients such as ikan asin that came from Tarakan, sambal terasi that came from Sidoarjo, and many other herbs and ingredients that came from many other part of Indonesia. So, on the one plate of Nasi Campur there are pieces of Indonesian archipelago. By serving and promoting Indonesian traditional food, Ibu Ageng believes that local culinary could still survive from modernization attack in the future.

Moreover, the architecture of the house will make us feel at home. It lashing back my memories and lying me back to time when I was a kid. In that time I was almost all the time ate my breakfast, lunch and dinner at home serving by my lovely mother.

In the 1950s, Affandi began to create expressionistic paintings. Carrying the First Grandchild (1953) was the piece that marked his newfound style: “Squeezing the tube.” Affandi paints by directly squeezing the paint of its tube. He came across this technique by accident, when he intended to draw a line. As he lost his patience when he was missing one of his pencil, he applied the paint directly from its tube. The resulting effect, as he found out, was that the painting object appeared more alive. From that day on, he used this technique. It expresses what he saw and felt about life.

Affandi blinded himself with theories. In his life, he often says that he is a painter with the intelligent of a buffalo, he choose this character because he was not very bright as a painter. The buffalo is an animal that is considered as ignorant. The attitude of this master of art who is not fond of theory, clearly made him sincere and unique in his profession as a painter.

Although he has had several seasonal exhibitions, he will not overact as a person. For Affandi, painting is work. He paints like a man who is hungry. Although he became a very famous person, he just want to be called a simple painter. Until his death in May 1990, he remains the profession as a painter. He was buried not far from the museum, that he has founded in tepi Kali Gajah Wong Yogyakarta.

Deil has a long history that goes back as far as the 14th century. In the past there used to be at least seven

castles in the vicinity. Unfortunately all of these castles are gone now. The region where Deil is situated is called “De Betuwe” . This region is also famous for its fruit. There are a lot of farmers who cultivate apples and pears. Two big cities in the neighbourhood are Utrecht and Den Bosch.

Sometimes winters in Holland can be very wet with lots of rain. In the past winters where white with lots of snow. But during the last few years there was no snow. But the winter of 2012 was one like I used to remember from my childhood.

On the 4th of February I looked out of the window of my bedroom and I knew that I had to take my camera and go outside. The complete village was covered with fresh snow and although it was very cold there was a beautiful sun shining.

I took my camera and started my car. The next hour and a half I drove through my village and took these photos. Photography is a hobby of mine and I am not pretending to be a professional. But I think the winter pictures of my village are very nice.

This is one of the beauty from the winter time in Deil City that I can share to everybody , hope it can comple-ment the knowledge when you plan your travel to The Netherlands.

The Betuwe has many orchards and fruit shops, so it is rightfully called Holland’s fruit garden. It is most beautiful during the springtime, when the fruit trees are blossoming. The Betuwe is known for its blossoming fruit trees and during this period the area is covered under a white/pink-blanket.

A cycling trip or a walking tour westward across the dikes along the rivers takes you, among other things, past Fort De Spees. Beautiful views on Utrecht’s Heuvelrug (Ridge) and natural landscape De Blauwe Kamer (The Blue Room) on the other side of the Rhine make a trip even more worthwhile.
