THE MUSICIANS

Page 5: The videotaping or other audio or video recording of this€¦ · The videotaping or other audio or video recording of this ... There Is A Happy Land…………………………

Barbara Buddin (Lady Thiang) has performed and directed shows for more years than she cares to admit. Barbara returned to Iowa to complete her doctorate after performing internationally in concert and opera repertoire, and musical theater. She maintains a voice studio, conducts 3 choirs, and teaches both theater and music in a multigenerational setting. Barbara has a degree in Arts Management, and enjoys working with IATSE (the people who get the shows on the boards). Her family was involved in professional theater and film for 5 generations. She loves shows with kids...onstage we're all kids.

Brandon Burkhardt (Prince Chulalongkorn) is thrilled to perform again with ICCT. He sang the lead role in Amahl and the Night Visitors with both Chamber Opera Chicago (two years) and Music by the Lake in Lake Geneva, WI. Other performances include: Kurt in The Sound of Music, Little Charles in the musical adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion, young Hansel in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, the children’s chorus for Carmen, and a Lollipop Guild munchkin in The Wizard of Oz. Brandon was selected as a member of the OPUS Iowa All-State Honor Choir for the past two years.

Karissa Burkhardt (Chorus) is very excited to be performing for the first time with ICCT. She performed the role of Gretl in The Sound of Music with Chamber Opera Chicago as well as in Jane Austen’s Persuasion (Cassandra), Hansel and Gretel (young Gretel), Amahl and the Night Visitors (children’s and shepard’s choruses), Carmen (children’s chorus), and Vanessa. She was also a munchkin in The Wizard of Oz. This year, she was selected as a member of the OPUS Iowa All-State Honor Choir.

Abbie Callahan (Chorus) is a first time performer in the theater. She is a 5th grader at Weber Elementary School where she enjoys science. She recently won the Johnson County Fair in 2012 singing Rolling in the Deep by Adele. She also performed at the Iowa State Fair and in the Nutcracker. When Abbie grows up she wants to be famous and adopt a child from every continent. Abbie plays the guitar, takes vocal lessons and is teaching herself piano.

Madeline Ephraim (Chorus) is a fourth grader at Coralville Central, where she recently joined the Cougar Chorale. She is the oldest of four gorgeous daughters. She is active with Girl Scouts, so if anyone needs any cookies, her mother would gladly sell them to you to get them out of the garage!

Kayla Fedler (Assistant Stage Manager) is a middle school student in the Williamsburg schools. She is thankful to have this time to spend with her father and learn about theater from behind the scenes.

Scott Fedler (Stage Manager) was looking for some fun things to do with Kayla, when he saw the auditions coming up for The King and I. Not being much of a front stage person, he asked about off stage jobs and was asked to assume the stage manager role, a first time event for him after many other experiences back stage.

Emma Furlong (Chorus) is a 4th grader at Wickham Elementary School. She has always loved acting and although she's been in theater camps, this is her first musical. Besides dra-ma, she also enjoys reading, playing piano and Tae Kwon Do. She'd like to thank her family and friends and especially her mom for singing the songs with her again... and again... and again...

Tarri Furlong (Chorus) has not participated in musical theater since high school but is happy to be involved again. She is particularly excited to be sharing this experience with her daughter, Emma. When not at rehearsal or taking care of her family, Tarri is busy helping out at the family winery - Ardon Creek. She would like to thank her husband, Chad, and son, Jack, for allowing the girls to do this and for putting up with all the singing and practicing around the house.

Emily Hill (Chorus) is excited to be in her third ICCT production (Brigitta in The Sound of Music and Pepper in Annie). Emily is 11 and in 5th grade at Coralville Central Elementary School. She sings in the Crescendo Children's Choir under the direction of Nancy Macfar-lane. She is in choir and bell choir at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church and takes piano and percussion lessons. She enjoys writing and drawing in her free time. She would like to thank her family for supporting her and everyone in the cast and crew for making this production so much fun.

Megan Hill (Chorus) is excited to be in her first ICCT production and has been in City Circle's A Christmas Carol the past 2 years. Megan is 14 and in 8th grade at Northwest Junior High School. In her free time, Megan enjoys attending youth group, church choir, and bell choir at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. She sings in school and show choirs, plays flute in band and choir, and plays piano in jazz band. She would like to thank her family for supporting her and everyone in the cast and crew for making this production so much fun.

Mark Jagnow (The King) In April 1906, my grandfather’s mission station in the Truk Islands was destroyed by the tsunami from the San Francisco earthquake. They would have starved except that the King from the Island behind them sent over a war canoe filled with breadfruit. The King was pagan but had been sending his wives to the mission station because “Christian women made better wives.” The King and I expresses the same things we deal with today, what to accept and what to not accept, what frees us and what enslaves us from cell phones to the internet to new ideas to democratic rule to the Taliban. Despite all our progress, we are just one bad storm away from starvation, without other peoples’ help. My first performance in Iowa City Community Theater was last century in Night of the Igua-na. And I guess I owe my life to a thoughtful King of that same century.

Alyssa Camille Lamb (Chorus) is thrilled to be making her Englert debut alongside her Daddy! She was last seen as Baby Angel Shirley in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Alyssa also appeared in June Bravermen's Benefit for Iowa City Hospice. She loves dancing at Nolte Academy and attends Performing Arts Preschool. Alyssa, 5, also loves swimming, gymnastics and her big sister and baby brother!

Greg Lamb (Captain Orton/Chorus) After many years of watching his wife and daughters perform, he’s excited to step out of the audience and onto the stage. “Don’t worry - I’m not quitting my day job at the UI Foundation just yet!” Fortunately, he has lots of directors at home to get him ready for this. Love to Meredith, Regan and Matthew. Break a leg, Alyssa!

Alex Leong (Chorus) was seen as the youngest princess in the last ICCT production of The King and I. She caught the acting bug from her older brother and enabled by her mother (the show’s costumer consultant) and father (who joined her on stage last time in the chorus).

Matthew Mapel (Chorus/Phra Alack) works at Core Fitness as a trainer. He wanted to learn more about the local theater scene and is making his stage debut as a Buddhist monk.

Kathy McDonald (Anna Leonowens) spends most of her time being the school counselor at Coralville Central. She is thrilled to be able to perform in this show with some of her cur-rent and former students. The rest of her time is spent maintaining a long-distance marriage with her amazing husband, Randall, who is 100% supportive in all of her endeavors. What little time left is spent with her granddaughter Brianna, 3 pets, and the UUSIC choir. Kathy is thrilled to play Anna. Some of her past roles include: the Lady (Man with a Load of Mischief) and (Sarah, Plain and Tall). "Make believe you're brave, and the trick will take you far...."

Donola Morris-Leong (Costume Consultant) got into this theater business when she met up with Evie Stanske at a Humane Society event. The rest, as they say, is history. Mother to AJ and Alex, wife to Jim, and daughter of Bev, Donola is proof that a cheery attitude and a car-ing heart can get you through any crisis in life.

Marina Paul (Chorus) is in 8th grade at Northwest Jr. High, where she is involved in a variety of activities from Knowledge Masters and swim team to both choir and show choir. At church, Marina has been active in vocal choir and hand bell choir since she was seven. She has participated in several church musicals, and is excited to be in her first production with Iowa City Community Theatre.

Michael Penick (Lun Tha) got his start in musical theater doing the Lutheran Summer Musicals in the late 90s and has not looked back. He is a City High grad, a Luther grad, and is working on a graduate degree in vocal performance here at the University. You may have seen him as the Captain of the Pinafore or as Brad in the Rocky Horror Show. Now he is a star-crossed lover.

Kristina Rutkowski (Chorus) has been singing since early childhood. She has performed in musicals since high school, most recently as Peggy in Godspell. She would like to thank her husband, Tom, and her three sons for their love and support.

Ella Schmitz (Child) is a 7th grader with an enviable energy level that allows her to enjoy many activities, though she struggles to find time to practice her instruments (violin, flute, and tenor sax). She lives in a blue house with her dog, Juno. In her free time Ella enjoys reading, singing, and playing with her fish Hobbs, to whom she dedicates her performance. The King and I is Ella's second ICCT production.

Glen Schmitz (Chorus, Priest) is delighted to find himself in his first production since 3rd grade. He is usually on the other side of the stage in the dark. He appreciates all the support and encouragement he has received from his family to join the cast of The King and I. Glen spends most of his free time reading, gardening and deciding how much wood to place in the fire pit.

Rebecca Summers (Chorus) Rebecca has had an interest in the theater ever since she was a little girl. She has taken many acting and music classes and is currently taking dance at Kate Carol Academy. When Rebecca grows up she wants to move to California and become an actress. This is Rebecca's first musical and she is very excited to be here.

Noah Tiegs (Chorus) was doing three shows at one point. He recently played a pot smoking youth in Glory of the Flowers at West High and has been cast as a frat boy in West High’s production of Legally Blond (which can only mean alcohol). What vice can he explore next? Last year he was assistant director for ICCT’s House of Wonders.

David Roe, Kristi Johnson, Brenda Christner,

Bev Mead, and You, the audience, for making

this all possible

The Iowa City Community Theatre would like to extend a

special thanks to these individuals :

And to these organizations:

Special Thanks

Christ the King Lutheran Church, Gloria Dei

Lutheran Church,

Leslie Nolte and the Nolte Dance Academy

Richard Tiegs (Director) is a life member of ICCT and a past recipient of a Governor’s Volunteer award. He will be one of those people in retirement who wonders when they had time to work. His wife is already asking that question, “When are you going to work?” He is active in Boys Scouts, Christ the King Lutheran parish life, and many other things in town. If he looks familiar, he probably is. “Carolyn, I’ve done my play. I’m coming home!”

Elizabeth Weiss (Tuptim) is a second-year student at the Iowa Writer's Workshop. She has appeared in many community theater productions including Fiddler on the Roof (Tzeitel) and The Threepenny Opera (Polly Peachum). For several years she performed with the Juilliard Choral Union (later known as the Clurman Singers) in New York City.

Eddie Wilson (Louis Leonowens) is a sixth grader at Coralville Central, where he has sung for the past three years in the Cougar Chorale. He is making his ICCT debut with his little brothers.

Leo Wilson (Chorus) is a third grader at Coralville Central and is in his second year singing with the Cougar Chorale. Leo has distinguished himself as the choir’s chair stacker after rehearsals. Leo delights in pestering his older brother Eddie and picking on his younger brother Mac. This is his theatrical debut.

Mac Wilson (Chorus) is in Kindergarten at Coralville Central and is one of four kindergartners singing in Cougar Chorale this year. He is the apple of his mother’s eye and every bit the handful he plays in this play, his first!

How do you begin to tell the story of a Welsh woman in a strange land? Rodgers and Hammerstein passed on it when it was first proposed. But the influence of wives is not to be taken lightly. Add to that the star power of Gertrude Lawrence who had acquired the rights to a stage adaptation and here you have it - Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I! Ms. Lawrence's name was the only name on the marquee until shortly before her death when she instructed that Yul Brynner's name should be added. What started as a career ending role for one of Broadway's brightest stars became the role of a lifetime for another. Mr. Brynner is iconically linked to the King and I for eternity. And an Oscar for the role doesn't hurt any either! Change is never easy. But to move a nation and a people and to preserve their independence was the legacy of King Mongkut of Siam. Yes, this play is about real people. The situations are real and the results even more so. You and I live in a world where people dream to be free and independent. You and I live in a world of change. Our greatness will be determined by how we rise to meet the challenge in our personal and professional lives. We may experience the discomfort as King Mongkut did. We may facilitate the change as Anna Leonowens did. We may live out the result of change as Prince Chulalongkorn did. But we must act. For 60 years, The King and I has charmed audiences and inspired countless millions with its readily accessible songs. What we lack in opulence in this minimally-staged production, I hope you hear brought forth in heart by the actors, actresses, and musicians before you this evening. So, whistle a happy tune, kiss in the shadows, and yearn to be something wonderful to someone else as we pay it forward.

The reviewers have spoken!

Come see ICCT in action for

yourself!

“ICCT has done an excellent job bringing the hilarity to stage.” The Foreigner — Iowa Theatre Blog, Matthew Falduto

“The actors take on their roles with skill, affection and warmth, and if you don’t feel good when you leave the theatre after this show, you must have had a very bad day.” Sarah Plain and Tall — Iowa Theatre Blog, Vicki Krajewski

“ICCT restored my faith in this classic play.” Bus Stop — Iowa

Theatre Blog, Matthew Fladuto

“Of all local community theatre productions I’ve been to in the last few years, this production ranks as one my absolute favorites.” Drowsy Chaperone — Iowa Theatre Blog, Andrew Juhl

“I was lucky enough to have a 9-year-old along with me for the review, and she — a little girl who can barely sit through an episode of over-stimulating Disney Channel tripe before getting bored - sat motionless and riveted throughout the entire final act. Well done, Agatha and ICCT.” And Then There Were None — Iowa Theatre Blog, Andrew Juhl

“ICCT’s production of Bus Stop directed by Luis Sierra is one of the good ones, and in many places one of the great ones… I have the utmost respect for those who can resist their egos and present the story simply, wonderfully and effectively.” Bus Stop — Iowa Theatre Blog, Matthew Brubaker

“This is a good show. Top to bottom.” Last of the Red Hot Lovers

— Iowa Theatre Blog, Brad Quinn

“The orchestra was more than up to the task. I am always amazed at the amount of talent we have in our community.” Camelot — Iowa Theatre Blog, Matthew Falduto

“...Everyone — literally everyone — who appears onstage in this piece does themselves (and ICCT) proud.” Baker’s Wife — Iowa Theatre Blog, Andrew Juhl

“Because of its age and subject, it is impossible to do this play well without a love and respect for the characters. It was obvious that the actors all had a great respect for the story they were telling.” The Shadow Box —Iowa Theatre Blog, Matthew Brubaker

“The dances were so mind-blowing that I

wished I could DVR them back and play them over to take in every detail.” Wonderful Town —Iowa The-atre Blog, Meghan D’Souza

“They hit all the jokes with the right comic timing, and the choreography is carried out with snappy precision. It's always a delight to see musical theatre performed with such care and confidence, particularly when the piece itself is so engaging.” The Fantasticks—Iowa Theatre Blog, James E. Trainor III

“My entire family was delighted and engaged by the show, from the hyper five

year old to the sardonic 12 year old.” Annie —Iowa Theatre Blog, Sharon Falduto
