The West Essex Directory is published bi-monthly by E4 Publishing. Our distribution covers most of Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill. We deliver to half of each area one month, and the other half of each area the following month (approximately 7,500 households per month, or around 15,000 households in a two month distribution).
Printed on FSC accredited paper. For every tree felled significantly more are planted.
Vegetable based inks are used throughout, which are far more environmentally friendly than oil based inks. Waste paper from the printing and
binding process is recycled and goes back into providing pulp for recycled paper products.

Editors letter
W elcome to the March/April edition of The West
Essex Directory, your local community magazine and business Directory.
Some of you have said that I’m coming over a bit curmud-geonly, even cantankerous. My dismissive remarks about Christmas, New Year, and happiness in general, combined with a thoroughly unpleasant approach to life, have led some to conjecture that I may not be the nicest person on the planet. To correct these misconceptions, I’m going to do my utmost to sound a bit more positive in the future.
So, hey – isn’t it great – spring will soon be with us, with bunnies, lambies and little piggy-wiggies, eggs and fluffly-wuffy little chicklets.
It’s no good. I can’t do this. I expect my daffodils will all fail to flower again. I won’t get any Easter eggs. April will be 29 days of rain. And then comes
summer, the worst season of all. The extra hour of daylight in the evening messes up the picture on the TV and the sun gets in my eyes and ruins Ce-lebrity Wife Swap. But I promised to be more positive, and I don’t want to let you down. So, on the bright side, it’ll be winter again before
you know it. David Young

I don’t mean to boast, (which means, of course, that I have every intention of being extremely conceited) but my sister owns a
great big boat. Now I can tell that you’re already green with envy, but hear me out, do. You see, I’d always thought that, in addition to it being great and big, it was also long.
“My boat may be long, dear brother,” she once said rather cryptically. “But it’s not a long boat.” The Young family don’t do family arguments, so I let her think she’d won. Any old how, it turns out that longboats were what Vikings used when they came invading, and the people that we saw bobbing about and lazing were far too sedate to have been marauders, and they didn’t have those helmets with the horns on, so maybe my sister
was right. (It occurs to me that I could become the nautical correspondent for the Directory with such vast knowledge, but the owners stead-fastly refuse to buy me that yacht.)
The sort of boat that bobs and lazes on the River Lea is the narrow boat, and the up side in owning a narrow boat is that you get to bob and laze about on the river. The down side is that, like a demanding puppy, the boat tends to make demands on one’s free time. And I had never quite seen the charm in that lazing about bit. Not, that is, until I walked along the River Lee from Rye House to Broxbourne, when the lap-ping of waves against rushes and the swans that swam serenely by and the general greenness and wateriness of it all provoked in me a strange and unfamiliar desire to do a bit of lazing about my-self.
You can walk all sorts of different stretches along the Lea Valley Walk, between Luton and London where it reaches the Thames. That’s about fifty miles in all. (The more observant may have noticed an apparent typo in my Lea/Lee spelling, but that ain’t the half of it – there are 25 ways of spelling it, including Lyzan and Lyge.)
The southern half of the walk is inside a Re-gional Park, the first of its kind when it was es-tablished in 1967. This part was heavily canalised in the late 18th century and parts of its length Narrow boat

divert into tributaries, branch off, rejoin, and generally show so much meandering and fork-ing that it seems the very river itself fancies a bit of lazing about and has absolutely no intent of ever going anywhere.
Fortunately, you don’t have to do the whole fifty miles at once. Trains and buses make it manageable in bite-size chunks. The four mile stretch from Rye House to Broxbourne is served by train, making it pos-sible to drive to the latter and get the train to the former or vice versa, if that makes sense.
Rye House itself was built in 1443, and was one of the first brick buildings in Britain. A leaflet explains that it has ‘diaper brickwork’. I’ve tried to come up with a suitable joke, but frankly I’ve got nothing. It’s a diamond pattern popular with the Tudors. Only the gatehouse remains. It was here that an unsuccessful plot was hatched to assassi-nate King Charles II in 1683. It was – wait for it – not a nappy affair.
The first stretch of the walk is alongside a speedway and karting centre, which doesn’t bode well for the promised tranquil calm of lapping water, nor for the sweet scented aroma of cow parsley, and there is more in the way of roaring and growling than lazing about, but this is soon left behind as the river bends south. The walk passes Glen Faba, an area of grasslands and reed-beds accessible along grassy paths. Further along is Dobb’s Weir, with walks branching off, an area steeped in history. Not sure who Dobb was, but
I’m sure he earned his weir. Nearby Nazeing Meads is a network of lagoons
popular with anglers. The path back to Broxbourne is clear and easy
with plenty of signposts. There are pubs at the beginning, the end and in between. Water buffalo have been introduced to graze in some of the waterlands alongside. You don’t need me to draw you a map really. I’ll stick to supplying my expert knowledge of boats. Just walk along any stretch, look at the wildlife, feel calmed by the water, let your spirit bob in rhythm with the boats, let your mind float like a swan – it’s all very therapeutic. Which makes me think - I really should get around to doing more lazing. I just can’t seem to summon up the energy.

C hingford golf course is offering golfers the chance to play for just a penny – the cost of a round of golf 126 years
ago on Friday 21 March. For the last 126 years it has been compulsory
to wear an item of bright red clothing whilst playing on the fabulous 18 hole, par 72 golf course which is at the corner of Station Road and Bury Road in Chingford and just five min-utes walk from Chingford train station on the London, Liverpool Street line.
Although there are three golf clubs at the course, it is open to the public every day with
prices ranging from £10 to £25 per person for a round.
In celebration of the abolition of the “red" rule, City of London Corporation which man-ages the golf course as part of Epping Forest is having a charity golf day, where golfers can play for a penny and a voluntary donation to “Sport Relief,” which raises money to help vulnerable people in both the UK and the world's poorest countries.
Antony Fenwick, Head of Visitor Services said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for both our regular golfers and newcomers to enjoy a game of golf on this beautiful course in the heart of Epping Forest and raise money for a worthy cause at the same time. Our aim is to attract as many people as possible to use the course on 21 March and going forward, as it offers a complete range of facilities including a café; shop; professional golfer Andrew Traynor on site; top quality golf tuition as well as state of the art game improvement technology.”
Tee times will be available from 8am to 2pm on 21 March and are expected to fill up very quickly. To book your slot, please email [email protected] or tel. 020 8529 5708 straight away so as not to miss out.
To find out more about the charity golf day and what else Chingford golf course has to offer, you can visit the websites: www andytraynor.co.uk or www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/eppingforest, or email [email protected] or [email protected]

T he Friends of Epping Forest are now getting ready to help re-open the Epping Forest Visitor Centre at High Beach from April.
The visitor centre at High Beach since 2012 has remained open only at weekends and Bank Holi-days, following the opening of Epping Forest’s flag-ship award winning visitor centre, ‘The View’ in Chingford. Now this new partnership will enable the visitor centre at High Beach to continue and develop its services for visitors.
The View - located on Rangers Road - is open daily 10am-5pm and is the City of London Corpo-ration’s most visited information point in the For-est, providing an events space, information about the story of Epping Forest and how to make the most of a visit to the ancient woodland. Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge, built in 1543, and But-ler’s Retreat café, are next door.
To facilitate the changes and developments at the visitor centre at High Beach, it is now closed until April, enabling new recruits to be trained to work in the Centre.
The City of London Corporation’s Epping For-est’s Head of Visitor Services, Tony Fenwick said: “We are delighted that the Friends of Epping Forest
have offered to operate the centre at High Beach and we will now work in partnership to provide appropriate support and training. The aims are to ensure that the facility at High Beach remains open to visitors and provides a high quality and develop-ing service for visitors to this popular area of the Forest.”
Judy Adams, Chairman of the Friends of Epping Forest, said: “We welcome this opportunity to help retain and develop the services for visitors at High Beach, a very heavily visited part of the Forest. Recruitment for volunteers has begun and this is your chance to share your love of this ancient woodland with others and enable them to explore and understand more of the Forest.”
