The West Essex Directory is published bi-monthly by E4 Publishing. Our distribution covers most of Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill. We deliver to half of each area one month, and the other half of each area the following month (approximately 7,500 households per month, or around 15,000 households in a two month distribution).

Printed on FSC accredited paper. For every tree felled significantly more are planted.

Vegetable based inks are used throughout, which are far more environmentally friendly than oil based inks. Waste paper from the printing and

binding process is recycled and goes back into providing pulp for recycled paper products.

W elcome to the May/June edition of The West

Essex Directory, your local community magazine and business Directory. It’s that awkward time of year, somewhere between spring and summer, so that I

don’t know whether to be really miserable, or to be really, really miserable. I’ll plump for the latter. It suits me better. True, I’m looking forward to a relaxing holiday with my wife. Yes, there are long evenings in which to enjoy walks to country pubs. OK, I can spend happy hours tending to the weeds (and that one flower) in my garden. Admittedly, we can meet friends at garden parties to talk over Pimms of culture and stuff (not really – I made that bit up – I don’t like friends). But the real problem, and what gets me down, is that there just isn’t

enough stuff to be really miserable about, and that makes me – well – really, really miserable. NB A reminder that this year's Chingford Village Festival is being held on Saturday 28th June - for more details see pages 21 to 23.

O h, the halcyon days of holidays past! The excitement as the Young family loaded the Morris with the bare essentials (some

underwear, a bucket and spade and a copy of Radio Times). The anticipation. And the songs. Oh, the songs we’d sing. “Oh this year we’re off to rainy Wales. Oh Denbach-y-Pysgod!” And I remember our neighbours too, throwing open their windows to call to us, “Oi! Shutup, you stupid family!” And “It’s 3 in the morning, you idiots!”

Dad liked an early start, even in the 1960s, lest one meet on the road one of the other ten cars then in existence. And we’d set off, duly packed, rosy-cheeked, eager, excited, puffed out from the singing. We were on our way to Denbach-y-Pysgod. Or, as English people normally call it, Tenby.

Some while ago we wrote of the Cardigan coast and mentioned the nearby (better known) Pem-brokeshire coast. It seems only fair to give Pem-brokeshire a few words too, in the interests of bal-ance. We wouldn’t want our readers in Tenby com-plaining.

The recent history of the county sounds a bit like something from a spoof political sitcom. In 1974, someone had a brilliant idea, and the former county of Pembrokeshire was absorbed into the new county of Dyfed in 1974. Then, in 1994, someone had an even more brilliant idea, and created the county of Pembrokeshire (again).

The Coastal Path is 186 miles long, from Amroth near Tenby round the jutting snout of southern Wales to Saint Dogmaels, near the moody Preseli Hills and on the edge of Cardigan. The trail passes through all kinds of scenery, from expansive sandy beaches and secluded coves to gaunt craggy cliffs and moorland, from modern harbours and fishing villages to prehistoric remains that loom out of a morning mist.

Tenby – which we learned earlier to call Denbach-y-Pysgod – which I can now reveal means little for-tress of fishes – is very pretty, splattered over the cliffs that harbour three sandy bays, like the spume from stormy waves. Its old town wall jealously hems in the old houses and the tall former houses of mer-chants, painted in pastel shades, look down from their perches on the sandy bays.

In Tudor times, the harbour was a thriving port, Seal pup, Marloes

trading fish to Ireland and Bristol, and exporting wool, coal and iron. But, in 1650, a plague ravaged the town and it fell into decay, until, by about 1800, pigs roamed the streets and most of the buildings were ruins. From 1802 onwards, however, major investment in the developing tourist trade saw the town flourish again as fashionable travellers came to bathe and to take healthy walks along the newly constructed paths above the sea.

Two miles out at sea lies Caldey Island, whose mon-astery is home to 20 Cis-tercian Trappist monks. Boats take tourists out to the island which is also a haven for wildlife.

Britain’s smallest city, Saint David’s, sits on a curve of the coast. In the 12th century, if you didn’t fancy the pilgrimage to Rome, you could get away with making 2 to Saint David’s, an early forerunner of the deals we get in supermarkets. It, too, fell into disre-pair before the Victorian tourism boom revived its fortunes.

But it is the coast these days that lures the holi-day-makers. Long distance paths can act on the human mind much as stamps and trains do. You can notch up sections until you complete the whole thing. It’s philately with outdoor views, train-spotting with posh anoraks.

The Young family in their unreliable Morris had not heard of Gore-tex. We visited no gastro-pubs and only took the Radio Times with us to impress the locals with our cosmopolitan view of the world. The coastline and the cliffs, the bays and waves and islands have not changed over the years. Anoraks may come and go but the landscape barely changes.

The Marloes peninsula thrusts a jagged lump of rock into the sea near Milford Haven, jutting to-wards Skomer like an unfinished bridge. Beneath its sheer cliffs, on unreachable pebbly beaches, seal pups in white fur coats lie in safe tranquillity, leered at from above by people like me. In an anorak.

DEAN SHULTON Chiropodist Step Into Summer

T he sun has eventually arrived after the long, damp winter. Our hands are nearly always out on

display, only hiding now and then in winter gloves. It is however easier to neglect our feet, as they are often out of sight, and sometimes out of mind.

In recent years though, women and men alike are realizing how good it can feel to treat their feet with more tender loving care. While professional treat-ments are widely available and reasonably affordable, you can also treat your feet to a home foot spa.

Our neglected appendages bear a lot of weight, and are exposed to friction and pressure. They're also often wrapped up in socks or crammed into shoes. In these conditions, tight, hardened, dry skin and calluses can develop.

So why not soak them in warm, soapy water. Drop a bit of scented oil into the water if you wish – pep-permint to invigorate or stimulate circulation, or lavender to relax. You can use this stolen moment to read a chapter from your book or simply close your eyes and just be.

Once you have relaxed some, remove those feet and dry them thoroughly. You can use a swab of surgical spirit in between the toes, to remove excess moisture. Then perhaps use some plain and simple moisturising cream, giving yourself a foot massage while you're at it.

If you intend to cut your toenails, which may need a trim every few weeks, foot experts advise that nails be trimmed straight across. This may prevent ingrown toenails from forming. Never cut them too short, or they'll be sore. It's also advisable that cuticles are not cut or pushed back as they may become be sensitive and vulnerable to inflammation.

As always, be gentle, be safe, and if you have any doubts about the condition of your feet, see a G.P. or registered chiropodist.

Please note that Dean provides a home visiting

service only. See contact details below.
