AutoreLyman Frank Baum nacque a Chittenango nello Stato di New York nel 1856 da una famiglia di origine tedesca. Fin da bambino manifestò la sua creatività e la sua sfrenata immaginazione, doti che non cessò mai di mettere a frutto, coltivando svariati interessi ed esercitando mille professioni. Nel 1899 inaugurò la sua collaborazione con l’illustratore William Wallace Denslow con Father Goose: His Book, una raccolta di filastrocche e nonsense per bambini. Nel 1900 i due pubblicarono The Wonderful Wizard of Oz che ebbe un successo travolgente e divenne un best seller nei due anni successivi. Per tutta la vita continuò a scrivere romanzi ambientati nel mondo di Oz (quattordici fino alla sua morte, più tre pubblicati postumi), mentre pubblicò sotto pseudonimo il resto della sua prolifica produzione letteraria. Morì a Glendale, in California, nel 1919.

TramaDurante un tornado la piccola Dorothy e il suo cane Totó vengono trasportati in volo in un paese sconosciuto (la Terra Blu dei Munchkins), dove è in corso una guerra fra streghe (due buone, quella del Nord e del Sud, e due cattive, quella dell’Est e dell’Ovest). Eliminata per un caso fortuito la strega cattiva dell’Est, Dorothy ne eredita le scarpette rosse e diventa amica della strega buona del Nord che per aiutarla a tornare a casa, le consiglia di rivolgersi al potente Mago di Oz. Così Dorothy e Totó si mettono in viaggio alla volta della Città di Smeraldo, dove risiede il grande Mago. Lungo la via si uniscono a loro l’Uomo di Paglia, l’Uomo di Latta e il Leone codardo. Ognuno di essi vede, infatti, nell’aiuto del grande Mago l’unica possibilità di realizzare il proprio desiderio. Numerose sfide e pericolose avventure aspettano Dorothy e la sua bizzarra comitiva, in una girandola di incontri e magie. Fino a che la protagonista non si renderà conto che la chiave per realizzare i propri sogni è sempre stata in suo possesso...

Note di regiaIl viaggio, l’alternanza tra sogno e realtà: il giovane regista Edward Johnson (Peter Pan) accetta la sfida di trasmettere agli spettatori le tematiche principali del racconto di L. Frank Baum in modo semplice, ma allo stesso tempo accattivante. A questo scopo è stata ideata una scenografia multifunzionale, composta da una struttura circolare che gira su se stessa introducendo di volta in volta un ambiente diverso. Il musical inizia e si conclude nella prateria in cui sorge la casa degli zii di Dorothy: uno spazio sobrio e realistico, in netto contrasto con il mondo magico in cui si svolgono le scene centrali e in cui prevale un design che ricorda lo stile dei cartoni animati. I personaggi mantengono le caratteristiche con cui sono universalmente conosciuti e i vivaci costumi, curati in ogni dettaglio, ne sottolineano ancor di più l’originalità e li rendono inconfondibili. Dall’inizio alla fine dello spettacolo, composizioni musicali inedite si alternano a brani famosi: i performer madrelingua li interpretano dal vivo, esibendosi anche in coreografie appositamente studiate per intrattenere il giovane pubblico e sottolineare l’evolversi delle vicende. La comprensione della storia è garantita anche dalla scelta didattica di adottare una recitazione chiara ed espressiva, nello stile esclusivo di PALKETTOSTAGE.

SCENE 1

A great prairie in Kansas.Emmy comes out of the house.

She puts the cakes on a table at the front of the house.Then Henry, Dorothy and Toto.

Em (looking at Henry). Henry, what is the matter with you?

Henry (stops). This grey sky does make me worried Emmy.

Em. If the clouds bring some rain I shall be perfectly happy.

Henry. Yes… maybe you are right. There is no need to worry. (He moves closer to the table.) What a delicious smell.

He takes a piece of cake.

Em. Be careful, excuse me! Your hands are dirty! (She looks around.) Do you know where Dorothy is?

Henry. With her dog, as usual. (He calls.) Dorothy! Dorothy!

Dorothy (off). I’m just coming!

Henry (looks at the sky again). Rain or no rain, the sky is definitely getting darker.

Em (looks at the sky). Come on… sit down. Look... the animals are quiet and you know very well that they can sense something when a tornado is coming.

Dorothy arrives with Toto in her arms.

Dorothy. Be quiet… quiet... calm down Toto. Aunt Em… you have baked my favourite bread! Mm… yummy.

SCENA 1

Una grande prateria del Kansas.Emmy esce dalla casa.

Appoggia le focacce su un tavolo davanti alla casa.Poi Henry, Dorothy e Totò.

Em (guardando Henry). Henry, cosa ti succede?

Henry (si ferma). Questo cielo grigio mi preoccupa Emmy.

Em. Se queste nuvole ci portano un po’ di pioggia io sarò solo contenta.

Henry. Sì… forse hai ragione. Non è il caso di preoccuparsi. (Si avvicina al tavolo.) Che profumino.

Prende un pezzo di focaccia.

Em. Stai attento, scusa! Hai le mani sporche! (Guarda in giro.) Sai dov’è Dorothy?

Henry. Con il suo cane, come al solito. (Chiama.) Dorothy! Dorothy!

Dorothy (fuori scena). Arrivo tra un secondo!

Henry (guarda di nuovo in cielo). Pioggia o non pioggia, il cielo sta diventando decisamente più buio.

Em (guarda il cielo). Dai… siediti. Guarda... gli animali sono calmi e tu lo sai benissimo che loro sentono qualcosa quando un ciclone arriva.

Dorothy arriva con Totò in braccio.

Dorothy. Tranquillo… tranquillo... calmati Totò. Zia Em… hai fatto le mie focacce preferite! Mm… buono.

Em (taking the cakes back). You cannot have anything until you wash your hands…

Henry. It has started to rain. I can feel it.

Em. Good.

Dorothy. I like it best the moment when the rain stops… when you can see the sun’s rays shine through the clouds. It is a magical moment.

She sings: “Somewhere over the rainbow”.

All’improvviso si alza il vento. Totò abbaia e trema. Henry. Emmy, Dorothy… riesco a sentire il tornado che arriva. Guardate… guardate… quell’erba si china a terra con il vento!

Dorothy. A tornado? Oh no. Where is it Uncle Henry?

Em. Dorothy, perhaps it is better to go inside the house.

Dorothy. Sure, Aunt Em.

The wind is howling. Toto runs away to hide.

Henry. Quick Dorothy, Emmy… Run to the cellar! I will lock the cows and horses in the barn!

SCENE 2

Dorothy is asleep on the stairs. Then Glinda.

Dorothy. How long have I been asleep? What a bad dream!!! (She sees beautiful scenery all around the house: trees full of fruit, flowers everywhere, colourful birds etc.) Wow! What has happened to our garden? (She shouts.) Aunt Em… Uncle Henry… Toto… where are you? Ah, there you are Toto. Where are we? …We are not in Kansas anymore…

Suddenly Glinda, the Witch of the North, appears.

Glinda. You are welcome, my sweet fairy.

Two inhabitants of this place, called Munchkin, come out from behind the trees and get closer timidly. Toto barks a little.

Dorothy. Un tornado? Oh no. Dov’è zio Henry?

Em. Dorothy, forse è meglio entrare in casa.

Dorothy. Certo, zia Em.

Il vento ulula. Totò corre a nascondersi.

Henry. Presto Dorothy, Emmy… Correte subito in cantina! Io vado a chiudere il bestiame nella stalla!

Dorothy. Totò? Totò… dove sei?

Em. Dorothy, lascia stare il cane!

Dorothy. No, sarà nascosto qui da qualche parte. Totò?

Dorothy corre verso casa.Il vento fa girare la casa su se stessa due volte

e Dorothy perde l’equilibrio e cade.

Dorothy. Totò? Totò? Cosa sta succedendo? Sto volando! Sto volando!

SCENA 2

Dorothy sta dormendo sulle scale.Poi Glinda.

Dorothy. Quanto tempo ho dormito? Che brutto sogno!!! (Vede intorno alla casa un luogo bellissimo: alberi carichi di frutta, fiori ovunque, uccelli variopinti etc.) Wow! Cosa è successo al nostro giardino? (Grida.) Zia Em … zio Henry… Totò… dove siete? Ah, sei qui Totò. Dove siamo? …Non siamo più nel Kansas…

All’improvviso appare Glinda, la Strega del Nord.

Glinda. Sii la benvenuta, dolcissima fata.

Due abitanti di questo posto chiamati Munchkin spuntano da dietro gli alberi e si avvicinano timidamente.Totò abbaia un po’.

The Munchkins. Hello!

Dorothy. Oh! You startled me. Hello and who are you?

Munchkin 1. We are the Munchkins and we live in this city.

Munchkin 2. And what kind of witch are you? Are you a good witch? Or a bad witch?

Dorothy. But I’m neither a fairy nor a witch at all, I assure you. I am Dorothy, an ordinary girl and this is my dog Toto.

Glinda. My dear, you may not be a fairy, but we are extremely grateful to you because you have killed the bad Witch of the East.

Munchkin 1. Yes, you are our hero!

Dorothy. I am afraid, you are wrong: I have never killed anyone.

Glinda. Not you, your house. Just take a look! Can you see those small slippers sticking out from under the house? Well, they belonged to the bad Witch of the East.

Dorothy looks there and cries full of fear.

Munchkin 2. That witch was very bad and she deserved this ending.

Glinda. She has been terrifying the inhabitants of this land for years… these little Munchkins.

Dorothy (to Glinda). And who is she?

Glinda. I am Glinda, and I live in the land of the North. I am the good Witch of the North.

Dorothy. Oh! Mi avete colto di sorpresa. Ciao, e voi chi siete?

Munchkin 1. Siamo i Munchkin e abitiamo in questa città.

Glinda. Tu no, però la tua casa sì. Guarda tu stessa! Vedi quelle scarpette che spuntano sotto la casa? Ebbene, appartenevano alla Strega cattiva dell’Est.

Dorothy guarda e grida di spavento.

Dorothy. Oh mio Dio! Mi dispiace… Non era mia intenzione… non sono stata io… è stato il ciclone. E ora, che facciamo?

Munchkin 1. Proprio niente.

Munchkin 2. Quella strega è stata molto cattiva e si è meritata questa fine.

Glinda. Per anni ha terrorizzato gli abitanti di questo paese… questi piccoli Munchkin.

Munchkin 2. E tu ci hai salvati!

Dorothy (a Glinda). E lei chi è?

Glinda. Io sono Glinda, e abito nelle terre del Nord. Sono la buona Strega del Nord.

Dorothy. A witch?! But you are beautiful… you cannot be a witch. (Aside.) Although I have never seen a witch before.

Glinda. Witches are either good or bad.

Munchkin 1. They say that these slippers have a very strong power.

Dorothy. Really? And what is the power of these slippers?

Munchkin 1. We don’t know that.

Glinda. But what I know for certain is that at the right moment they always fulfil the wishes of the person who wears them.

Dorothy puts the magic slippers on.

Dorothy. Oh, they are really nice, thank you. And now, dear Glinda, I must get home, can you show me the way to Kansas?

Glinda. Kansas?

Dorothy. Yes, I would like to go back to Kansas. My aunt and uncle must be worried about me.

Glinda. Ah, my dear, it is a little bit difficult…

Dorothy. Why?

Glinda. Well, you see, although I am a witch…

Dorothy. Yes…

Glinda. And I could cast some spells…

Glinda prende le scarpette da sotto la casa e si avvicina a Dorothy.

Glinda. Ecco, sono tue adesso Dorothy. Loro hanno dei poteri magici. Ma devi fare attenzione Dorothy, se la Strega cattiva dell’Ovest sa che le hai, ti darà la caccia per riprendertele.

Munchkin 1. Si dice che quelle scarpette abbiano un potere molto forte.

Dorothy. Davvero? E qual è il potere di queste scarpette?

Munchkin 2. Non lo sappiamo.

Glinda. Ma quello che sappiamo di certo è che al momento giusto esaudiscono sempre i desideri di chiunque le indossi.

Dorothy indossa le scarpette magiche.

Dorothy. Oh, sono veramente belle, grazie. E adesso, cara Glinda, devo tornare a casa, mi potete mostrare la strada per il Kansas?

Glinda. Kansas?

Dorothy. Sì, vorrei tornare a casa nel Kansas. I miei zii staranno in pena per me.

Glinda. Ah, mia cara, è un po’ difficile…

Dorothy. Perché?

Dorothy (looks at the slippers). Take me home! …(She jumps.) Please… take me home. (Nothing happens, she tries again.) It does not work.

Glinda. Do not lose hope. Dorothy, I know a wizard who can help you.

Dorothy. A wizard?

Munchkin 1. Yes, and he is very powerful.

Munchkin 2. He is the Wizard of Oz.

Munchkin 1. Sì, ed è molto potente.

Munchkin 2. È il Mago di Oz.

Dorothy. E dove lo posso trovare?

Glinda. Devi andare nella Città di Smeraldo.

Dorothy. E dove si trova questa città?

Glinda. E’ al centro del regno… e Oz è il Grande Mago che la governa.

Dorothy. E come ci arrivo là? Glinda. Devi andarci a piedi. È un viaggio molto lungo, a volte bellissimo e a volte pericoloso. Ma io ti proteggerò.

Dorothy. Vergognati!

Leone. Ahi, mi hai fatto male! Io non ti ho nemmeno toccata.

Dorothy. Un leone che piange? Questo sì che è strano.

The Scarecrow goes nearer trembling.

Oz. You, made of straw, have you come to ask me for a brain?

Scarecrow. Yes, your… Majesty! You see…

The Lion roars.

Dorothy. I cannot see anything! …My friends where are you?

Tin Man. Who touched me? Was it you, Lion?

The Witch of the West appears on her broomand tries to kidnap Dorothy.

Dorothy. Leave me… leave me! I fl-y-y!

Scarecrow. Dorothy I will hold on to you! No-o-o!

The Witch flies away with Dorothy.

All. Ah – a – a!!

Everyone, except Dorothy, is on the ground and in a bad condition.

Tin Man. What happened? Where is Dorothy?

Scarecrow. The Witch of the West has taken her away! I tried to hold on to her but the horrible Witch tore me up. Please, help me to put the straw back into me again. We must try and rescue Dorothy.

Lion. What will happen to us? What will happen to us?

Strada tortuosa e montuosa. All’improvviso il vento alza la polvere e diventa completamente buio.

Dorothy. Un ciclone… di nuovo!

Uomo di Latta. Aggrappatevi a me, amici, essendo fatto di latta, il vento non mi farà volare via.

Uomo di Paglia. Aiuto! Qualcuno mi dia la mano… il vento mi porta via!

Il Leone ruggisce.

La Strega dell’Ovest appare sulla scopa e cerca di rapire Dorothy.

La Strega vola via con Dorothy.

Tutti. Ah – a-a!!

Tutti, tranne Dorothy, a terra e malconci.

Uomo di Latta. Cosa è successo? Dov’è Dorothy?

Uomo di Paglia. L’ha presa la Strega dell’Ovest! Ho cercato di afferrarla ma l’orribile Strega mi ha ridotto in brandelli. Aiutatemi a rimettere la paglia dentro. Dobbiamo provare e salvare Dorothy.

Leone. Che sarà di noi! Che sarà di noi!

SCENE 5

The kitchen in the castle of the Witch of the West.Dorothy is standing still in the middle of the kitchen.

The Witch of the West is going around her.

Witch of the West. I see you are wearing my magic slippers… Give them back to me immediately. I am the only one who knows how to use them. (The Witch tries to touch the slippers, but she is struck by lightning.) I see you are protected. But this will not help you. Ha-ha-ha. You will have to obey me entirely, if you do not want to come to a bitter end like your stupid friends. Do you understand?

Dorothy. What did you do to them?

Witch of the West. They are all dead!

Dorothy. Oh!

Witch of the West. Come on,… sweep the floor, polish the pots and pans and take care of the fire-place. Here is the broom.

The Witch exits. Dorothy starts to cry.

She takes the broom and starts to clean. She sings: “Home”.

La Strega dell’Ovest le gira intorno.

Strega dell’Ovest. Vedo che indossi le mie scarpette magiche … Ridammele subito. Sono l’unica che sa come usarle. (La strega cerca di toccare le scarpette, ma viene folgorata.) Vedo che sei protetta. Ma questo non ti aiuterà. Ha-ha-ha. Dovrai obbedirmi in tutto e per tutto, se non vuoi fare la fine dei tuoi stupidi amici. Hai capito?

Dorothy. Cosa hai fatto a loro?

Strega dell’Ovest. Sono tutti morti!

Dorothy. Ah!

Strega dell’Ovest. Dai, forza… spazza il pavimento, lucida pentole e padelle e ravviva il fuoco nel caminetto. Ecco la scopa.

La strega esce. Dorothy inizia a piangere.

Dorothy. Non riuscirò mai a tornare a casa. Non rivedrò mai la zia Emmy e lo zio Henry.

Prende la scopa e inizia a pulire. Canta: “Casa”.

Dorothy. Siamo venuti a chiederti di mantenere le tue promesse!

Oz. Hmm. Ho saputo che la Strega si è liquefatta! Chi è stato?!

Leone. È stata Dorothy… da sola!

Dorothy. È successo per caso. Non sapevo che l’acqua l’avrebbe uccisa.

Oz. Sì, sei stata fortunata.

The Lion roars loudly. The screen falls revealing the Guardian who was standing behind.

Dorothy. And who are you?

Guardian/Oz (hiding his face). I am Oz, the… Great and… Terrible Oz.

Tin Man. Do you mean to say… the Oz?

Scarecrow. It is not possible!

Lion. You are neither great… nor terrible!

Tin Man. But you promised me a heart.

Lion. And me courage.

Scarecrow. And me a brain.

Dorothy. And me to go back home…

He takes his hands off his face.

Tin Man. But he is the Guardian!

Dorothy. You are really dishonest!

Guardian/Oz. I am an ordinary man… but let me explain…

Dorothy. E hai promesso di aiutarmi a tornare a casa…

Toglie le mani dalla faccia.

Uomo di Latta. Ma è il Guardiano!

Dorothy. Sei proprio un bugiardo!

Guardiano/Oz. Io sono un uomo qualsiasi… ma lasciatemi spiegare…

Scarecrow. No, you are not an ordinary man: you are dishonest!

Guardian/Oz. You are right when you say that about me… but not everything is as it appears!

Scarecrow. You tricked us.

Tin Man. You made fun of us.

Guardian/Oz. Dear friends, please do not reveal to anyone who the Wizard of Oz is.

Dorothy. So nobody knows who you are?

Guardian/Oz. Nobody. By pretending to be the Guardian I could prepare in advance for anyone who wanted to see me. I have always been able to deceive everybody so far... You see… I am an inventor and I built a balloon several years ago. I wanted to show everybody my invention. The whole city came to see me flying… Everything was going on well until, a tornado arrived, all of a sudden, and carried me up to this land. When the inhabitants saw me coming down the clouds they believed I was a wizard. They were so kind to me I did not want to disappoint them.

Dorothy. Have you been tricking people all this time?

Guardian/Oz. Yes. I am very ashamed.

Tin Man. And were you here all alone?

Guardian/Oz. Yes. But I tried to rule this city wisely.

Dorothy. But what can we do with your wisdom now…

Guardian/Oz. Oh, wisdom is powerful. I can help you, my dear friends! Scarecrow come near.

The Scarecrow goes near.

Uomo di Paglia. No, tu non sei un uomo qualsiasi: sei disonesto!

Guardiano/Oz. Avete ragione a dire così di me… ma non è tutto così come sembra!

Uomo di Paglia. Tu ci hai mentito.

Uomo di Latta. Ti sei preso gioco di noi.

Guardiano/Oz. Cari amici, vi prego non rivelate a nessuno chi è veramente il Mago Oz.

Dorothy. Nessuno sa chi sei?

Guardiano/Oz. Nessuno. Fingendomi il Guardiano potevo preparare in anticipo quelli che volevano vedermi. Finora sono sempre riuscito a ingannare tutti... Vedete… io sono un inventore e tanti anni fa ho costruito una mongolfiera. Volevo mostrare a tutti la mia invenzione. È arrivata tutta la città a vedere come volavo… Andava tutto bene finché, all’improvviso è arrivato un ciclone che mi ha trasportato fino a questo paese. Quando gli abitanti mi hanno visto scendere dalle nuvole hanno creduto che fossi un mago. Loro erano così gentili con me che non volevo deluderli.

Dorothy. Hai mentito per tutto questo tempo?

Guardiano/Oz. Sì. Mi vergogno davvero.

Uomo di Latta. E sei stato qui tutto solo?

Guardiano/Oz. Sì. Ma ho cercato di governare saggiamente questa città.

Dorothy. Sì, ma cosa ne facciamo adesso della tua saggezza…

Guardiano/Oz. Oh, la saggezza è potente. Io vi posso aiutare, miei cari amici! Uomo di Paglia avvicinati.

Guardiano/Oz. Oh sì, ed è anche brillante.

Tutti applaudono. L’Uomo di Latta si emoziona.

Guardiano/Oz. Adesso tocca a te, Uomo di Latta.

L’Uomo di Latta si avvicina.

Guardiano/Oz. Tu dici che non hai cuore, ma guardati, come ti sei emozionato. Tu non solo hai un cuore, ma il tuo cuore è nobile e gentile. Non lo hai mai perso, lo hai chiuso semplicemente, per non soffrire.

Uomo di Latta. È proprio vero. Inizio a sentire di nuovo il cuore nel mio petto. Non è una meraviglia? Amici cari, sento di amarvi tutti.

Il Leone si avvicina alla poltrona.

Leone. Ora tocca a me.

Guardiano/Oz. Aspetta. (Va dietro il paravento e torna con una bottiglia con un liquido verde.) Ecco, se lo bevi sarai subito coraggioso.

Leone. Sì… mi sento forte e coraggioso. Il più coraggioso nel mondo.

Guardiano/Oz. Bene! Eppure io ti ho dato solo acqua colorata!

Leone. Allora perché mi sento così coraggioso adesso?

Guardian/Oz. Because you have never lacked courage. The only thing you lacked was SELF-CONFIDENCE.

Lion. Yes, self-confidence.

The Lion, the Tin Man and the Scarecrow embrace. Dorothy goes to stand near the Guardian.

Guardian/Oz. My dear, I think I can help you too.

Dorothy. Will I be able to go back to Kansas, then?

Guardian/Oz. Oh, yes. Flying!

All. Flying?

Guardian/Oz. Of course. I will repair my balloon and you shall be able to go back home with it.

Dorothy. And what about you? Do you want to come with me too?

Guardian/Oz. Yes. I am tired of telling lies to make people happy. I would rather come with you to Kansas.

Dorothy. I shall be happy to travel with you.

Guardian/Oz (takes off his necklace with a big medal). Scarecrow, as wise man as I am, I appoint you the new Wise Man of Oz.

Scarecrow. Oh, thank you. I have now become wise too.

Guardian/Oz. And you will stay here and rule this city. I believe you will do it very well.

Scarecrow. Thank you! Well, as I am the governor I can appoint you the Great Protector of the city and you, Tin Man, I appoint you the Great Poet of the city.

All embrace.

Il Leone, l’Uomo di Latta e l’Uomo di Paglia si abbracciano. Dorothy si avvicina al Guardiano.

Guardiano/Oz. Mia cara, credo di poter aiutare anche te.

Dorothy. Potrò tornare nel Kansas, dunque?

Guardiano/Oz. Oh, Sì. Volando!

Tutti. Volando?

Guardiano/Oz. Certo. Riparerò la mia mongolfiera e con quella potrai ritornare a casa.

Dorothy. E tu cosa farai? Vuoi venire anche tu con me?

Guardiano/Oz. Certo. Sono stanco di raccontare bugie per rendere felici le persone. Preferirei venire con te nel Kansas.

Dorothy. Sarò felice di viaggiare con te.

Guardiano/Oz (si toglie una collana con una grossa medaglia). Uomo di Paglia, da uomo saggio che sono, io ti nomino il nuovo Saggio di Oz.

Uomo di Paglia. Oh, grazie. Sono diventato anche saggio.

Guardiano/Oz. E rimarrai a governare questa città. Io credo che lo farai benissimo.

Uomo di Paglia. Grazie! Allora, visto che sono il governatore posso nominare te il Grande Protettore della città e tu, Uomo di Latta, sarai il Grande Poeta della città.

Tutti si abbracciano.

SCENE 7

In the open air. Near the castle.The Guardian/Oz is sitting inside the basket under the balloon. Dorothy is

saying goodbye to her friends.

Dorothy. Goodbye everyone.

Tin Man. We love you.

Scarecrow. We shall miss you. Are you sure you want to leave here?

Dorothy. Kansas is my home.

They embrace, forgetting the ropes which keep the balloon on the ground. The balloon begins to rise into the air with Oz inside.

Dorothy. Come back, Oz! I want to go with you!

Guardian/Oz. I cannot. I am sorry. Adieu!!!

Lion. I will go after him and try to get the balloon back to the ground. Come back!

The Lion exits.

Dorothy. What can I do now? I want to go home. Oh Toto, it looks like we are going to be stuck here forever. I wish I had never come to Oz.

Dorothy cries.

Scarecrow. We are happy you came to Oz, Dorothy… Think if you had never come here, I would have stayed in the cornfield all my life scaring sparrows and crows.

Tin Man. And I would have stayed all rusty and immobile in the wood!

Scarecrow. And the Lion would always have been afraid!

Dorothy. Of course, I understand. I am happy I did something for you, my dear friends, but now… I have to go back to Kansas. Back to my Aunty Em and Uncle Henry.

All’aperto. Vicino al castello. Il Guardiano/Oz è seduto dentro la mongolfiera.

Dorothy sta salutando gli amici.

Dorothy. Addio ragazzi.

Uomo di Latta. Ti vogliamo bene.

Uomo di Paglia. Ci mancherai. Sei sicura di voler partire?

Dorothy. Il Kansas è casa mia.

Si abbracciano dimenticando i fili che tengono la mongolfiera a terra. La mongolfiera si alza insieme ad Oz.

Dorothy. Torna indietro, Oz! Voglio venire con te!

Guardiano/Oz. Non posso. Mi dispiace. Addio!!!

Leone. Lo seguirò e cercherò di riportare la mongolfiera a terra. Torna indietro!

Il Leone esce.

Dorothy. Come faccio adesso? Voglio tornare a casa. Oh Totò, sembra che resteremo bloccati qui per sempre. Vorrei non essere mai venuta a Oz.

Dorothy piange.

Uomo di Paglia. …Siamo felici che tu sia venuta a Oz, Dorothy… Pensa se non fossi mai venuta, io sarei rimasto per tutta la vita nel campo di grano a cacciare passeri e corvi.

Uomo di Latta. Ed io sarei rimasto nel bosco tutto arrugginito e immobile!

Uomo di Paglia. E il Leone sarebbe rimasto per sempre un leone pauroso!

Dorothy. Adesso ho capito. Sono felice di aver fatto qualcosa per voi, amici miei. Ma ora… devo tornare nel Kansas. Ritornare da mia zia Em e zio Henry.

Scarecrow. Look Dorothy. Here comes Glinda.

Tin Man. I’m sure she will be able to help to get you home.

Suddenly Glinda, the Witch of the North, appears.She sings: “Don’t lose the dream”.

She waves for the last time, then the slippers knock themselves together.

Henry. My child! Emmy, Dorothy is alive! See how she sleeps peacefully. It is incredible! The wind did not carry her away.

Toto jumps into Dorothy’s arms waking her up.

Dorothy. Toto! Aunt Em! Uncle Henry! I am back home!

Emmy enters. Em. Dorothy! Back home? And where have you been, my child?

Dorothy. Oh, I had a wonderful journey… I have just come back from the land of Oz. And these slippers brought me home. Look!

Dorothy points to her feet, but the slippers have disappeared.

She looks around for them.

Totò salta in braccio a Dorothy svegliandola.

Dorothy. Totò! Zia Em! Zio Henry! Sono tornata a casa!

Emmy entra. Em. Dorothy! Tornata? E dove sei stata, bambina mia?

Dorothy. Oh, ho fatto un viaggio straordinario… Vengo dal regno di Oz. E queste scarpette mi hanno portato a casa. Guarda!

Dorothy indica i suoi piedi, ma le scarpette sono sparite.

Dorothy. Oh! Le scarpette sono sparite. Ma le avevo… Sono sicura.
