פיה פתחה בחכמה

When Eden Schuman got upset, she calmed her-self down by counting from 1 to 10, just like we learned in Pirkei Avos.

Morah D’vorah and Morah Tova got such nachas.

We were learning about the נחש and for extra credit, Daniela Rachel Hahn (1G-P) went home and looked in her Chumash to find the punish-ments given to חוה ,אדם, and the נחש!

Punishments from ‘ה

Its feet were cut off and everyone will hate it and - נחשstep on its head and heel. .With pain you will give birth to children – חוה .You will have to work hard to get food – אדם Chava Spekman (2G-R) raised $2.00 for YBH. Miri Nash (6G) recalled a ל‘‘מאמר חז we had

learned which had the same שרש as a word in the י‘‘רש that we were learning.

Sara Leah Ledereich (6G) connected a concept from נביא when learning in חומש about:

“כאלו ילדו.....כל המלמד את בן חברו תורה “.

Learning From Our Leaders Submitted by Morah Pollak (3G Morah)

I n פרשת שלח, the spies should have noticed the good things = virtues rather

than to look for bad things = faults. A צדיק once noted: “We were given two eyes; one very powerful – so we should find even our smallest mis-takes and faults; the other eye very weak when looking and judging others. Too often we switch the functions of the two eyes.

Parnas Hayom

Dr. Szwergold

I n our E2K science program this winter and spring we continued learning about magnetism and electricity and engaged in activi-

ties to explore some things about light and mirrors. As part of our magnetism/electricity unit, we built a mag-netic levitation (Maglev) track, some Maglev vehicles and learned about Maglev trains that are being developed around the world. We also learned about the incredible variety of ways in which electricity and magnetism are a part of our lives – in electric mo-tors, MRI machines, relays, solenoids, radio, TV, internet, and credit cards (to mention a few examples). To conclude this unit, we built simple electric motors using a neodymium magnet, some magnet wire, paper clips, and a battery. In learning about light, we explored the properties of mirrors, learned about optic fibers, and built a kaleidoscope and a periscope.

All and all, it was fun and even the teacher learned a thing or two….

E2K—Science

The students of YBH of Passaic—Hillel were privileged to dedicate

their learning on:

21 Sivan - June 11 In commemoration of the sheloshim of Akiva ben Avraham, Dr. Clifton Price, fa-ther of Rabbi Daniel Price & Mrs. Debra Spivak, grandfather of Aharon (4B) & Shlomo (Pre-1-A) Price and Yonatan (4B), Yehuda (4B), Eli (2B) & Ephy (2B) Spivak. Sponsored by Marc & Debra Spivak & Family.

To dedicate a day of learning, please contact Chani Karpel at (973) 272-8344 or Zipporah Gasner at (973)471-7045. Although we try to accommodate last-minute dedications, we would greatly appreciate a week's notice, when possible.

A s the school year comes to a close, please have your child bring

in all YBH library books. Students are no longer allowed to take out books for the remainder of the school year. As an incentive we are offering a prize to any class who returns all their books before June 12th.

Calling All Library Books

Morah Gold

W as Shimshon really always a strong person? Did all of Yisro’s children become Jewish? What must you be careful of when

telling Lashon Hara for an important purpose? As we finish up our curriculum, a 5th grader is the one to ask! We will be completing Parashas Yisro next week. We have stressed answering in complete Hebrew sentences, and I’ve had far fewer students asking lately, ”Can I write this in English?”. We recently finished learning about Shimshon in Navi, and we are now spending our time reviewing the material from the beginning of the year. It is really a pleasure to see how much the children remember.

I’d like to take this time to thank all who helped purchase and install the Smart Boards. There was so much we were able to accomplish because of them, which otherwise might have been diffi-cult or confusing. Working on our Pesach Haggadah went very smoothly because we had our worksheets projected on the Smart Boards, and girls could double check their answers as they wrote. In Chumash, we were able to learn longer and more difficult Rashis, because it is easier to follow on the board. Comprehension could be tested, as girls had turns to highlight quotes, Rashi’s question, and other key phrases. In Navi we are working on a scrapbook of illustra-tions of scenes from Sefer Shoftim as a review of the material from the beginning of the year. We will watch it on the Smart Board dur-ing the last week of school.

It has really been a pleasure working with this year’s 5G class and I wish everyone continued nachas from their children’s accomplishments.

Class Acts –5G

B elieve it or not, we have reached that time of year again. Class work is wrapping up and the

countdown to summer vacation begins. We have had an extremely successful year in 5G. We have worked hard this year expanding our knowledge, learning a myriad of new academic skills, and im-proving our emotional and interpersonal skills. In math we have learned all about decimal place value, operations with fractions and decimals, ratios, and percentages among other things. Social Studies took us through the creation of the United States and the trials and growth that followed in the coming years. We learned various topics in physical sci-ence including matter, atoms and elements, forces, motion, and energy. In writing we worked on our paragraph writ-ing, learned and practiced five paragraph writing, and ended off with the student’s favorite unit on story writing. With just this snippet of all we have accomplished over the course of this year you can be assured that summer vacation will be a well-earned break for 5G.

A Message from the Mechaneches

L ast week, Thursday evening, the girls in grades 1—8 enjoyed an end of the year banquet. It was a fun filled affair reflect-ing the year of Ruach and Achdus the girls experienced at all the programs this past year.

The tables were set elegantly and a delicious fleishig dinner was served. Rabbi Leiner inspired the girls with warm words. In addition, Aliza Pahmer shared a beautiful Dvar Torah relating to the theme of this past year, “All Around the World” and how all Jews are connected. The girls then participated in decorating a picture frame as a memoir for this year of ב‘‘תשע , 2012 at YBH! The highlight of the evening was watching the girls dance together in harmony and unity! The cafeteria was filled with a genuine spirit of warmth, joy and אחדות. The evening culminated with an exciting Chinese auction and wonderful memories for the girls to cherish. A special thank you to Aliza Pahmer and Feigue Blejer who were in charge of the banquet, and to all the 8th graders for a year of creativity and רוח! We wish them much הצלחה and welcome our incoming 8th graders for another wonderful year of inspiration and growth through exciting activities! I would like to wish everyone a healthy and happy summer and continued נחת

from all our girls at YBH!

Thank You To all those who donated generously

The PTA Thanks You for Another Great Year!

A s the school year draws to a close, the PTA is reminded of many individuals who have helped us through-out the year. Zipporah Gasner and Chani Karpel have been handling the Parnas Hayom program. This

is a weekly undertaking to which they both give their meticulous attention so the information can be correctly noted for each dedication, not to mention the huge mailing that must be prepared over the summer. The PTA greatly appreciates all the time you devote to this vital fundraiser. We would like to express a tremendous thank you to Rachel Novick for coordinating the school’s hot lunch program and to Yaakov Ochs for creating the entire online ordering system for the meal plan as well as handling all the logistical aspects with Rachel No-vick. The new system has been an incredible time saver for everyone. Many students in the school choose to receive the enjoyable Olameinu magazine. The PTA would like to thank Judy Citer for taking care of collecting the orders and distributing the magazine monthly to all the classes. And finally, we hope you’ve checked out the PTA website which has been up and running thanks to Sarah Schwartz. Sarah has been maintaining our webpage and updates it on a continual basis. We appreciate Sarah’s time and attention to this allowing every-one up-to-date information on what the PTA is doing. B”H, the PTA has so many dedicated volunteers and sponsors who support and assist with our pro-grams and events throughout the year. While it is not possible to thank all of you individually here, please know that WE DO CARE AND APPRECIATE EVERYTHING YOU DO ON BEHALF OF OUR SCHOOL. The recent Shavuos Food Sale was no exception. We would like to reiterate our appreciation to all of the ladies who volunteered their time and resources to bake and cook for the Sale. Because of your help it was a great suc-cess. Yasher Koach to Penina Goldman for coordinating the fundraiser and to Yael Pahmer for creating the tasteful flyer as well as sending out the email notifications. While many of you are making your summer plans, the PTA Board has already begun discussing pro-grams and events for next year. We hope you will make plans to get involved and join us. Aviva Levin is once again arranging for one or two volunteers (depending on class size) to be class mothers for each classroom for the 2012-2013 school year. Please contact Aviva at 973-472-1030 if you would like to volunteer or would like more information about being a class mother. Thank you to our terrific parent body and YBH staff. Through our united efforts may we continue to help our school and enhance our children’s educational experience. The PTA wishes all of you a productive, enjoy-able and safe summer experience.

Star Teacher

O n Wednesday, June 13, Mr. Patrick Tuohey of The Record-Herald News came to present the Star Teacher award to our very own Mr. James Woods. Mr. Woods currently teaches Language Arts to 6

th and 7

th

grade boys and girls at the school. Zvi Hymowitz wrote a heartfelt 200-word essay about Mr. Woods a few months ago, and after over 200 entries were scrutinized by the newspaper judges, Zvi’s was among ten selected as award winners. Zvi read his essay to the Principal of YBH, Rabbi Berel Leiner, Assistant Principal, Rabbi Binyomin Perl-stein, many of the administrative staff, his own sixth grade class, the graduating 8

th grade boys class, and of

course his proud parents! Mr. Woods received a beautiful star award and a certificate of this momentous achievement. For a teacher to be so loved and appreciated by his students is truly an achievement worth cele-brating. Thanks so much to the school for giving Zvi the opportunity to present this award. Thanks to the Record-Herald News for sponsoring this event and for selecting a teacher from YBH as a recipient! It is such an honor for our school!

Mrs. Sommer

E 2k girls finished up a few units including a 4-color map question, hashi puzzles and match-stick math. Facilitating E2K has been a pleasure for me. The students were all driven to solve for solutions of com-

plex problems. Sometimes they were not sure where to start. Other times, they worked in an attempt to prove that an 100 year old 4-color map theorem was not true. Every week they came back sure that this week would be the week they would crack the map problem and bring acclaim to YBH. I hope that the passion for knowledge and love of learning they displayed each week will transfer into motivation for all disciplines that they study. I am thankful to YBH for granting me the opportunity to teach both my regular class as well as E2K.
