The Eight Medicine Buddhas Meditation The Eight Medicine Buddhas Puja come from an ancient Tibetan legend in which seven of the disciples of Shakyamuni Buddha (the historical Buddha) pledged to work with Shakyamuni Buddhis for all eternity to help alleviate the sufferings of all sentient beings. Their prayer is adorned with metaphors that are rich in spiritual meaning. The mantra of the Medicine Buddha is in Sanskrit and its repetition is a form of meditation that is designed to create a mind of peace without stress and anxiety. Such a tranquil mind will help the practitioner overcome any of the obstacles he or she is facing in life. Any cessation in anger, stress, anxiety can make the body healthier and any increase in virtues such as compassion, tolerance, and loving kindness can cause a person's total being to flourish. The Medicine Buddha’s Mantra Bhagavan with equal compassion for all, whose name, when merely heard, dispels the suffering of lower realms, Dispeller of disease and the three poisons: I prostrate to Medicine Buddha Lapis Light. TADYATHA OM BHEKHANDZYE BHEKHANDZYE MAHA BHEKHANDZYE [BHEKHANDZYE]/RAJA SAMUDGATE SVAHAI The mantra could roughly be translated as “Hail! Appear, O Healer, O Healer, O Great Healer, O King of Healing!” The optional “tadyathā” at the beginning means “thus,” and it’s not really part of the mantra, but more of an introduction.
