Theta and Sigma Chi “Shine Like the Sun”SONGFEST 2010

It is the biggest student‐run philan‐thropic event at UC Irvine. Hundreds of stu‐dents participate in it and it runs throughout almost the entire academic year. What on 

Earth could raise such excitement and en‐courage so many students to become in‐volved? Songfest! Every year twenty sorori‐ties and fraternities are paired together in order to raise money for a different charity that the Greek community selects. Through‐out the year there are different events for each pairing to earn points, while a running tally is kept to encourage friendly competi‐tion. This year the donations went towards a 

local organization, the Orange Country Food Bank. 

The night of the performance had quickly arrived, and students, parents and faculty were filing into the Bren Events Cen‐ter, eagerly awaiting the start of Songfest 2010. As 7:00 drew near, the lights were dimmed, and the roar of chanting and ap‐plause filled the stadium. Anticipations were high, and each chapter sat next to their re‐

spective pairing, hoping that their show would be the one to dazzle and impress the judges. A year long event built up to the cul‐mination of one night‐‐and that night had finally begun.

The first half of the show featured pro‐ductions such as Xanadu, Across the Universe, Little Shop of Horrors and We Will Rock You, and each subsequent performance of the 

night was a fierce competitor with the one before it. Nerves began to build; chapters whispered amongst themselves, unsure of whether or not they would be able to walk away with the Best Performance of the night. Little did the audience realize, however, that the anticipation that they were experience was exponentially felt by the cast waiting backstage. All of the countless hours of re‐hearsing choreography, perfecting vocals and 

running lines had come down to the 12 min‐utes that they would be performing in front of the entire UC Irvine Greek community. They had selflessly devoted themselves to a philanthropic cause that would ultimately raise nearly three times as much money as the year before. It was now or never; they had to give it all they had. ...(9 to 5 ‐ continued on page 2)

... “SIGMA CHI, THETA, SIGMA CHI, THETA,” came bellowing from the back of the stadium, and the bleachers began a low rum‐ble that grew louder and more abrupt with each passing second. This was it—the mo‐ment that Kappa Alpha Theta had been wait‐ing for all year, and every individual chapter member was beaming with pride and excite‐ment. Theta sisters grabbed each others hand 

as the tension grew, and finally the curtain rose, and the 9 to 5 Kappa Alpha Theta and Sigma Chi cast took the stage. 

The cast started out with the theme song “9 to 5,” and the vocals and choreogra‐phy, coupled with the old‐style business at‐tire, brought the entire show to life. It was as if the audience was watching a Broadway rendition of it, and the Theta sisters looked at each other in amazement as the first song 

was completed. The 12 minutes flew by, and in what had seemed like 3 minutes, the show ended with their final song. The climax was phenomenal, as the cast finished singing with, “When it's all said and done, we'ere gonna shine... Shine like the sun!” And, ironi‐cally, that was exactly what the Kappa Alpha Theta and Sigma Chi cast had done. The sup‐porting sisters and brothers stood up for a standing ovation, screaming and chanting at 

the top of their lungs.The latter half of the show was finished 

by performances such as Fame, Rock of Ages, Grease and Chicago. It had ended just as quickly as it had started, and everyone in the audience seemed blown away by the quality of the shows. Now all that was left was the 

awards.The casts were asked to come back on 

stage, and each chapter cheered for their cast as they came up to the front of the stage, bowed, and took their places. Within mo‐ments, the Songfest Executive Board had begun to announce the winners. “Best Vocals goes to... Kappa Alpha Theta and Sigma Chi for 9 to 5!” they said into the microphone, and the cheers were so loud that they 

drowned out the next award that the cast had won. The 9 to 5 cast was also given Best Cho‐reography, Best Male Vocals, the overall Best Show.

Overall, the success of the philanthropy had exceeded everyone's expectations. It benefited the Orange County Food Bank, and through the cooperation of the entire Greek community, stu‐dents donated 46,000 cans of 

food and volunteered 756 hours at the Food Bank. $18,000 was collected in mone‐tary donations, and the total amount of resources and money donated was valued at $81,000—the most in Songfest history. Kappa Alpha Theta is proud to have been able to contribute to such an amazing 

cause, and even more proud of their sisters for putting so much hard work and effort into the main event. Songfest 2010 has been a night to remember.

A Cinderella StoryTHETA SERVICE: CINDERELLAS FOR LIFE       Each year, Working Wardrobes of Orange County puts on Cinderellas for life, a prom dress give away to low‐income teenage girls. This year, over 500 volunteers participated in 

Cinderellas for life as personal shoppers, event planners, ambassadors, and much more. The women of Kappa Alpha Theta col‐lected 18 volunteers to work as personal shoppers for the day.

Walking into the Hilton of Irvine, I saw how altruistic the people of Orange County were, with having donated thousands of dresses, jewelry, purses, and hours toward this event.

After a brief orientation from the direc‐tors of the Cinderellas for Life event, the 250 personal shopper volunteers gathered into a long, windy line. Justine Rosenberg and I paired up as personal shopping helpings to ensure that we enjoy this great experience together.

As we neared the front of the line, we were paired up with a beautiful, petite girl dressed in a simple sweatshirt and jeans. She 

was so happy to be there with us. Once we introduced ourselves, our Cinderella told us she was a senior in high school and she wanted to remember this last prom for the rest of her life. We knew this experience had to be amazing.

We headed toward the crowd of girls around the dress racks and found out that our Cinderella was wanted to find the perfect

ballroom gown dress. She wanted to not only “look like a princess, but feel like one too.” 

Looking through the dresses, we found three poofy, ballroom dresses that were spring colored. I hoped that one would fit her. After finding a spot in the busy dressing room, our Cinderella tried on dress, after dress, after dress, and none were fitting! It was my mission to make her feel like the prin‐cess she wanted to be, so I ran out to the 

floor to look at more dresses.Just like in a movie, the perfect teal dress 

had just been placed back on the rack. I took it straight to the fitting room. Our Cinderella 

put the dress on and it was perfect! It was the perfect dress for her skin color, her height, and her optimistic bubbly personality. She was glowing in the dress and many volunteers nearby commented on how beautiful she looked; she couldn’t help but smile as she walked back out to find some matching high heels.

After searching for shoes, earrings, and a bracelet, our Cinderella thanked us for all the 

help and told us about her future ambitions. As Justine and I wished her the best of luck, I was reminded of how something so small and simple, like helping someone pick out a dress, 

can change a person’s life. Cinderellas for Life was an event that encouraged all the Cinderellas to follow their dreams and to remember how won‐derful and beautiful they really are. As a personal shopper, I found this 

experience to be motivating and eye opening. I got the chance to work one‐on‐one with three wonderful teenag‐ers. From the beginning of our early morning, I was feeling the positive energy of the volunteers and the en‐thusiasm to help these hard working teenagers have a day of pampering and shopping. Every girl deserves a chance to be a Cinderella, and the women of 

Kappa Alpha Theta were so happy to share this experience with them.

From the President:Dear sisters, family, and alumnae, 

This year, Epsilon Sigma has been working incredibly hard to better our‐selves as a chapter. As we celebrated our 25th anniversary earlier this year, we have improved in scholarship, ex‐panded our presence on campus, and enhanced community relationships through more personal service events. We recently participated in Cinderellas for Life, Tinkerbell Guild, Relay for Life, canned food drives to benefit the OC Food Bank, and various CASA events in the area. This Spring, we also wel‐comed a new member class of a few more outstanding women that we are all very excited about. With such amaz‐ing sisterhood, and the many new renovations to the facility, we are con‐stantly reminded of how lucky we are to have a place that feels like home.

I am truly so proud of this chapter. From winning the 2009 Panhellenic Sports Trophy to the heart that we put into Songfest, I have never met such a well‐rounded, down‐to‐earth group of young women. It is such a blessing to call them my sisters. Thank you to eve‐ryone that makes being President the most challenging, yet most rewarding job I could ever imagine. Every day, the strength and compassion of our mem‐bers makes me so proud to be a Theta.

Our Scholarship Programs

Scholar of the Week recognizes a mem‐ber that has distinguished commendable scholarship qualities including academic im‐provement, extra studying, aiding and en‐couraging other members to reach their highest potential in scholarship, etc. The award can be a “smart cookie,” (an actual cookie, or a gift card for a pazookie), Theta gear, or a gift card.

Study Sisters Kick Off is an event at 

which members of each study group can get together and organize study times. There are 

posters placed around the facility with study tips and healthy nutrition ideas to aide study‐ing. Snacks are served, and organizing tools  are available to encourage organizing/prioritizing academic responsibilities.

Majors Dinner occurs in the facility, in which members within their designated ma‐jors eat together. Members are encouraged to discuss teachers, classes, study techniques.

Theta Think Tank is a jar for members 

write down and place their ideas and con‐cerns about scholarship programs.

Brag Jar is a jar in which members can put in written notes that “brag” about their own or another’s good grades or excelled scholarship activities. This encourages mem‐

bers to strive for the best to be recognized within the chapter for their accomplishments. 

The Scholarship Bulletin Board is in the facility with important scholarship dates. For example, when to add, drop, change classes are due, honor society information, study tips, member study sessions/study hours and future scholarship events. 

Study Sisters is a group of 2 to 4 mem‐bers encouraged to study together for at least 

two hours a week. The group is selected with consideration of majors and GPAs, so that members can encourage each other and reach their highest academic potential.

Theta’s Notable ScholarsOUR SCHOLARSHIP CHAIR HAS SEEN EX‐CELLENT SCHOLARLY ABILITY OR IM‐PROVEMENT IN:

Stephanie Berk, who has successfully balanced a social life with difficult classes, while still maintaining an exceptional GPA.

Erin Maudlin, who is enthusiastic about scholarship and has been able to maintain good grades while on Songfest cast.

Nidhi Vaghashia, who receives good grades, works, is involved in theta, and main‐tains a social life. She inspires others and has a willingness to help anyone in need. 

Milana Kvitalashvili, who has had great improvement in scholastic achievement. 

Roxy Bakhtiari, who has had a huge improvement in scholastic achievement. She also has great enthusiasm about scholarship.

Steffani Chin, who has great grades and 

the ability to balance schoolwork with out‐side involvements.

In the Pursuit ofScholarshipSPOTLIGHT: EREN TUZMEN

Epsilon Sigma’s Scholarship Chair, Eren Tuzmen, has taken her position to the next level. She has innovated, ex‐panded, and implemented countless scholarship programs such as Study Sis‐ters, Theta Think Tank, and Scholar of the Week.

Eren has been excited about scholar‐ship since an early age. She now wants to 

see every member of Epsilon Sigma reach their highest academic potential.

“I know each member of Kappa Al‐pha Theta has the ability to achieve in 

academics, but it is the issue of actually applying themselves. That’s where I come in,” she says.

Through her scholarship programs, Eren has seen many members make scholarship their priority and greatly im‐prove their academic standings.

But the best part about Eren’s schol‐arship programs, in addition to the food, presents, and her very colorful emails, is 

her enthusiasm. She is continuously thrilled about scholastics and always has a smile on her face.

Eren’s constant optimism and positiv‐ity about scholarship are extraordinary and encouraging. She is a true leader and an amazing sister.

Tracy BremmerAbout Tracy Bremmer: Tracy was initiated into Kappa Alpha Theta in 1994 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a minor in Spanish. When she was a member of Epsilon Sigma, Tracy was President and also performed as part of Songfest cast. She now has her MBA from UC Ir‐vine and is the current Director of Product Marketing at Experian. Tracy also has three young children and currently serves on the Epsilon Sigma Advisory Board.How did Tracy get to where she is now? After graduation, Tracy was an Educational Leadership Con‐

sultant (ELC). From there, she began her career in marketing and has been doing marketing and con‐sulting for eleven years.How has Theta helped Tracy after graduation? Recruitment allows members of Kappa Alpha Theta to gain skills they can use during interviews and meetings later on in life.Being able to talk to people you do not know and strike up interesting conversations with them is a skill, she says, that one can use in any situation later in life.What career advice would Tracy give to current undergraduates? Spend time while you are in col‐lege exploring career options and really thinking about what you want to do in the future. Those who at least begin the exploration process in college will be more prepared for what they are going to face once they graduate.

Epsilon Sigma’s Alumnae: Where are they now?

Rachel LaMarAbout Rachel LaMar: Rachel was initiated in 1987. She graduated with a degree in Social Ecology from UC Irvine and received her J.D. from Whittier Law School. Rachel practiced law for a few years, but later attained her real estate license for more flexibility, and she loves it. She also writes for various magazines and has published two books. Today, Rachel is a Real Estate Broker, a writer,  and a proud mother of two. She also volunteers for adoption‐related causes, as she was adopted herself. Today, Rachel lives in Carlsbad, CA with her husband and children.

How has Theta helped Rachel after graduation? Rachel has met some of her dearest friends as a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. She is very happy to see that the Epsilon Sigma chapter has evolved, yet still remains a group of very down‐to‐earth women. This is why she joined inthe first place!What career advice would Rachel give to current members? Follow your dreams and passions. Life is so short and the most important thing is to do what you truly love. That is how you will find true hap‐piness. The rest will fall into place.

Lila KooklanAbout Lila Kooklan: Lila was initiated in 2006 and graduated from UC Irvine in 2009 with a B.A. in Politi‐cal Science.As a member of Kappa Alpha Theta, Lila was part of Songfest cast and was Songfest Director in 2009. Lila initially wanted to go into law, but after a lot of soul searching, she decided law school was not for her and will now be pursuing a Ph.D. in Political Science at UC Santa Barbara. Currently, she is working at Nordstrom in the Handbags department until she begins school in the Fall.How has Theta helped Lila after graduation? Theta has proved to be an extremely useful networking 

tool and has taught Lila the value of commitment, responsibility, accountability, and time management. Not only that, Lila says that she can nail any interview because of all the countless hours she spent in recruitment!What career advice would Lila give to current members? Plan in advance. The economy is a harsh place right now. Having a B.A. is often not enough anymore, so graduate school is a great thing to look into. Do the preparation for grad school now, while you are still in the habit of studying. Get to know your professors, as a recommendation letter can make or break your application. Finally, take vacations and remember your life may take you in any direction!
