THINKINGTHROUGHPARADOXES

BETWEEN CRITICAL THEORY AND CONTEMPORARY CHINESEPHILOSOPHYThis workshop is a continuation of two previous workshops organized at the Institute for SocialResearch in 2014 (History, Morality and Political Thought in Contemporary China) and 2015 (TheRepressedRepublic?China in the Lightof itsRevolutions). The focusof theearlierdiscussionshasbeen on the philosophical and political discourses, which accompanied the political and culturalmodernization of China since the 19thcentury. Onemajor concern has been the basic theoreticalframework for dealing with “paradoxes of modernity” (Jürgen Habermas) or “contemporaryparadoxes”(AxelHonneth)inEastAsiaandtheirpathologicalorevencatastrophiceffects.

This perspective has emerged, because China’s hybrid modernization – with its transculturalentanglementsofthingsoldandnew,EasternandWestern–posesatremendouschallengetothecommonWesternunderstandingofmodernity.FormanyWesternobserverscontemporaryChinaisfullofcontradictions.Theyhavegreatdifficultiesto imaginethatdifferentaspectsmaycoexist inameaningfulway:socialismandmarketeconomyorliberalismandConfucianismforexample.FromaperspectivethatexcludescontradictionstheparadoxesofChinesemodernitywilleitherhavetobesolved somehow or will endanger Chinese modernization as such. But is it really necessary to“(dis)solve”paradoxes?Areparadoxesnecessarilybadorevenpathological?Ormayitbepossibletosolvethembynotsolvingthem, bywaysofthinkingandlivingparadoxically?

Maybe it is high time for a shift in “our”wayof discussing theparadoxesof (Chinese)modernity.Since twenty years or so, a new discourse emerged in the Chinese-speakingworld, which heavilydrawson sourcesof classicalChinesephilosophy, trying to transform theway “we” thinknotonlyabout the revolutionary changes in China since the 19th century but aboutmodernity in general.Oncewebegintofacethepossibilitythatoneofthemajorphilosophicalproblemsconnectedtothischallenge is theneedtothinkdifferentlyaboutparadoxes, ahugefieldofresearchopensup.Onlyafter the overwhelming tendency to press Chinese modernization into the logic of “Westernmodernity” is to some extend relaxed, wemay be prepared to discover the richness ofmodes ofthinkingandlivingparadoxicallydevelopedinChinesephilosophy, literatureandart.

This workshop, therefore, will not only pay attention to political and cultural developments incontemporaryChinabutalsofocusonthecontemporarysignificanceofclassicalChinesephilosophy, literature and art. It invites experts from different fields to present their research into variouspossibilitiesofthinkingthroughparadoxes.

During the two previous workshops at the IfS the issue of “normative paradoxes” emerged as ashared problem. This workshop proposes a way of deepening the discussion through a highlyexperimental, transculturalandcriticaldiscussionoftheconceptofparadoxitself.
