Donna Marie Williams Sister Feelgood I Value My Membership in the Black Sisterhood and I will learn to respect and love other sisters as I learn to respect and love myself. Donna Marie Williams Sister Feelgood This Months S.i.S. Pick Blackbird Papers by Ian Smith List Price: $24.95 326 Pages, Hardcover Synopsis: World-renowned Dartmouth professor Wilson Bledsoe is returning from a party celebrating his latest honor when he encounters a broken-down pickup on the secluded country road to his home. The next day, the discovery of his body with a vicious racist epithet carved into his chest leads to the quick arrest of two loathsome white supremacists. The local authorities seem ready to accept the case at face value as a racial hate crime. But the murdered professor's brother, FBI agent Sterling Bledsoe, has inserted himself into the investigation and isn't ready to buy into this pat solution. A look around his bother's lab and brief interviews with his students and colleagues pique Sterling's curiosity about Wilson's pet project: a nearly complete paper on the mysterious deaths of hundreds of local blackbirds. Most authors know that the best way to sell their novels is through word of mouth and what bigger network than that of a book club? M ost authors and willing and eager to meet with their readers and hear feedback about their novel. So dont hesitate to throw out an offer to your favorite author. You might just be surprised at how eager they are to join you. W orried about costs? Most authors budget for travel in doing promotions. The best time to invite authors is when they visit your town for a book tour. If your city isnt on their tour list, maybe you should contact them to get them to schedule a stop. S ome authors say they prefer the intimacy of book club meetings because they get to know their readers and can gauge what works and doesnt work in their novel. S o look at your book list early. Decide which authors you want to invite. Go to their websites to look at their book tour to see when they will stop in your town or nearby and send out that invite! LYLAS!! ~ ~ New Releases! Sharon Haynes, Founder/President When it comes to promoting literacy in the community, these 13 ladies are about serious business! Originally founded in April of 2002 as Emerging Minds Book Club, the group decided that they wanted to connect with other book clubs around the nation so they almost unanimously voted to become a chapter of Texas- based Sisters Sippin Tea Literary Group two months later. And they have never looked back. They meet monthly in members' homes on the 3rd Saturday of the month to discuss various literary titles. The books are chosen by the members three months in advance with each hostess suggesting three titles for members to vote on. Two of their favorite titles from previous discussions are "Sugar" by Bernice McFadden and "On the Eighth Day She Rested" by J.D. Mason. They enjoy collaborating with authors by having them join their meetings by telephone whenever possible. They also work with the African-American Resource Center to schedule and coordinate author appearances. To cap their year off, the Tulsa chapter will host the Sisters Sippin Tea annual reunion this year where all 25 chapters of the group will come to celebrate and enjoy a weekend of literary entertainment. We all know that sustaining a diverse group of women who are about a positive mission can be quite a task. One of the things that carries this group is their philosophy, "agree to respectfully disagree." They have by-laws to maintain structure and feel it is important that every member have a sense of belonging to the group. To this end they strive to get every person involved in some facet of the organization that is suitable to their personalities and comfort level. To promote a sisterhood bond, Tulsa SST celebrates and supports each others' birthdays and accomplishments. Their annual Christmas Gala allows their spouses to partake of the SST experience. During this yearly celebration, they discuss topics that deal with relationships, enjoy good food, and the men seem to have a great time. Each year to celebrate their anniversary, they have a "mini-retreat" so that the members can bond and embrace each other in an atmosphere that is different from their usual meeting venue. They strive to have 100% participation at the retreats because they know this time is important to the structure of their group. Last June they ventured to Simpler Times Inn, in Afton, OK where they all experienced a rejuvenation that really can't be described. At this lakeside Bed & Breakfast, they enjoyed empowerment sessions, poetry readings, massage therapy and the "togetherness" time that allowed them each to discover their own uniqueness. This year they to a day journey to Carthage Missouri. The thing that really stands out about this group is the way they incorporate literacy in their charity work. One of their biggest accomplishments is the formation of their Jr. Book Club, "Falcon Book Club." This group of multi-cultural youth ages 9-15 now totals 23 active members! The only requirement for the Jr. book club is that the children have a desire to read and improve their literacy skills, and that they participate in community service projects sponsored by the group. Tulsa SST provides each child with lunch and a book at each meeting. They encourage the youth to embrace reading and instill in them a passion for it by sharing through community service. To date, the "Falcon Book Club" has adopted a local nursing home, where they frequently visit to bear gifts and read to the residents. There are so many projects that this group has been involved in it's incredible that they still find time to meet and discuss books! They've adopted a local 6th grade class and provided each student with at least two books of his or her own to read over the summer. To benefit the students, any student that wrote a book report earned extra credit in their 7th grade English class. In early 2004, these ladies organized a book drive that resulted in a donation of 2000 books to a local middle school. Because of their tremendous efforts in the community, they were honored at last year's National Book Club Conference for their work to promote literacy in the community. There is still more, yet to come. They are just on the brink of Tulsa Sisters Sippin Tea stirring things up in Tulsa! Watch out for these ladies, they are making in happen in Oklahoma!! Interview with Sharon Haynes, SST Founder. SAMPLE WORK Slide 43 Mark Anthony Author of Dogism S.i.S.: Reading the bio on your website, you say you never had intentions on becoming a writer, it just sort of happened. How did this all begin for you? Would you say you were 'destined' to become a writer? MAnthony: The whole writing thing for me began with the book Paper Chasers, I started writing that book when I was like 16 years old and I finished it when I was 17 turning 18. It started out more as a journal after I had seen one of my friends get killed. I started writing long hand in five subject notebooks about a lot of the things that I was doing and about the people that I was running with at that time. If I was hanging out or after coming home from a club or something, before I would go to sleep I would just write about what had just went on. Then one day I decided to fictionalize some of what I wrote, and I never thought it was good enough to be a book so I never let anyone read it. Then eight years later when computers became hugely popular I bought one and decided to type what I had written down in the five subject notebooks and I let people read it and as they say, the rest is history. As far as me being destined to become a writer, I am not one hundred percent sure about that, but I do know that God gave me the talent to be both a writer and an entrepreneur, and once I combined my God given talents with hard work and faith everything else fell into place, so if that is what destiny is then yes I guess it was destiny. S.i.S.: Your first novel, "Paper Chasers" is an Essence Best-Seller. How did you come up with the premise of the story and why do you think it has such a wide appeal? MAnthony: I came up with the premise of the story simply because I grew up middle class and privileged in a lot of ways. Both of my parents worked, we had two cars and a nice house. The projects and the slums wasn't my reality yet I felt and saw a lot of the drug selling, the murders, and the quest to always chase money, I was exposed to that by simply walking two blocks from my house to Merrick Blvd., and I wanted to just show that it's not just the poor and the people from the projects that are effected by certain ills in a society. As far as why I think the story has a wide appeal, I think that is because it is written in an honest voice that people can relate to. Just like they say real recognize real. S.i.S.: What's next for Mark Anthony? Can you give us a little insight into your upcoming projects? MAnthony: Basically I am always writing a new story and in addition to that I am building my publishing company, Q- Boro Books. So I literally never sleep, but that's because I love what I do so I have more fun when I am awake and working on something. Just remember the name because we will be putting out some of the hottest books on the market! Interview with Mark Anthony S.i.S.
