• There must be disposable gloves in each classroom.

• Universal Precautions’ signs must be posted in a visible place in every room.

How To Take Gloves Off.• Take the cuff of one glove turning it inside out, as it is

being pulled off your hand, this will put the 1st dirty glove into the 2nd gloved hand.

• As you’re pulling the other glove off by the cuff, it will automatically capture the 1st dirty glove and it will be inside out so no contaminated surface will be exposed.

Blood And Body Fluids

• All blood and body fluids must be considered to be potentially infected.

• Contact custodians to clean up any blood and/or body fluid spills. A fresh solution 1 part bleach and 10 parts water may be used for decontamination.

• Please do not attempt to clean up any blood or body fluid spills yourself.

OSHA Guidelines

• Universal Precautions must be used for any First Aid procedure.

• Report incidents of contact with another person’s body fluid, if you have an open wound, or there is any contact to your eyes, or mouth. Also, report any needle stick exposure. These reports should be made to your Supervisor/Principal/School Nurse.

• Complete form ‘Blood or Body Fluid Exposure.’• An employee has the option of being tested and

vaccinated for Hepatitis B post exposure (within 24 hours according to OSHA).

Defibrillator/AED Info• Be sure that you know the location of the AED in your building(s).• When the cabinet door that contains the AED is opened an alarm

will sound. When the cabinet door is closed the alarm will deactivate.

• If you need to get the AED be sure and also get the child size pads, and small black zipper bag.

• The AED has an automated voice component, which will begin instructions once machine is turned on.

• This is what our AED looks like.

Med Kit Locations

• If you don’t know where your school med- kit is, contact the nurse and he/she will tell you.

Fanny Packs

• All elementary school’s lunchtime assistants and teachers on recess duty should have a Fanny Pack containing supplies for minor playground injuries. Please see school nurse for these supplies.

• The best prevention against communicable disease is to wash hands with soap for at least 20-30 seconds. Try to get your students to use hand sanitizers. Also, you should do the same. Antibacterial wipes are also good items to use to wash the desks daily.

• Make sure that when you sneeze or cough you do it in your upper sleeve so that way you don’t spread germs. If you sneeze in your hands and touch something, you will spread germs.

• It is recommended that students are taught this same procedure to eliminate the spread of germs.

• The school corporation will pay for a series of three immunizations. Let your school nurse know if you are interested in receiving these immunizations.

Hepatitis B

EpiPen®

• To be used for severe allergic reaction– Insect bites, food, drugs, or other allergens

• Symptoms: flushing, apprehension, fainting, convulsions, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, wheezing, difficult or labored breathing, shortness of breath, severe hives

Directions for Useof EpiPen

• Unscrew the yellow or green cp off of the EpiPen or EpiPen Jr carrying case and remove the EpiPen or EpiPen Jr auto-injector from its storage tube.

• Grasp unit with the black tip pointing downward• Form fist around the unit (black tip down)• With your other hand, pull off the gray safety release• Hold black tip near outer thigh• Swing & jab firmly into outer thigh until it clicks so that unit is perpendicular

(at 90 angle) to the thigh. (Auto injector is designed to work through clothing.)

• Hold firmly against thigh for approximately 10 seconds. (The injection is now complete. Window on auto-injector will show red)

• Remove unit from thigh and massage injection area for 10 seconds.• Call 911 and seek immediate medical attention• Carefully place the used auto-injector (without bending the needle), needle-

end first, into the storage tube of the carrying case that provides built-in needle protection after use. Then screw the cap of the storage tube back on completely, and take it with you to the hospital emergency room.

• Note: Most of the liquid (about 90%) stay in the auto-injector and cannot be reused. However, you have received the correct dose of the medication if the red flag appears in window.

Warning!EpiPen

• NEVER put thumb, fingers, or hand over black tip. The needle comes out of black tip. Accidental injection into hands or feet may result in loss of blood flow to these areas. If this happens, go immediately to the nearest emergency room.

• EpiPen and EpiPen Jr should be injected only into the outer thigh (see “Directions for Use”).

• Do NOT remove gray safety release until ready to use.
