Gov’t expected to award P65-BLRT project to Ayala-MPIC group

Transportation de-partment spokesmanMichael Sagcal said ina separate interviewthat an award waspossible next week.

Only the tandem ofAyala Corp. and MetroPacific InvestmentsCorp. made a bid forthe LRT-1 project, which involves the ex-tension of the railwayline to Bacoor, Cavite.Six other interestedgroups did not partici-pate in the auction, now on its secondround, citing unattrac-tive financial prospects.

The government,in this case, took sev-eral more steps inevaluating the offer of

Ayala-Metro Pacific’sLight Rail Manila con-sortium, given thatthe group was thesole bidder. Light RailManila offered P9.35billion for the right toexpand and operateLRT-1 for a period of32 years.

These steps includ-ed securing the ap-proval of the NationalEconomic Develop-ment Authority, chaired by PresidentAquino.

Because the opera-tions of the railwayline were included, itwould provide freshrevenue streams forboth Ayala and MetroPacific.

By Miguel R. Camus

THE GOVERNMENT may formallyaward the P65-billion Light Rail Tran-sit Line 1 (LRT-1) extension projectnext week, or after the railway regula-tor holds a key meeting on July 16, anofficial yesterday said.

The LRTA board ischaired by Trans-portation Secretary

Joseph Abaya whileits members includeCabinet secretariesfrom the Finance,Economic and RoadInfrastructure depart-ments.

The officials areset to hold theirmeeting next Wednes-day, Cabrera said.

“The board wouldhave to conduct thenecessary due dili-gence,” he explained.
