Party like it’s 1999era rushing back tothe thousands of screaming ’90s kidsthat filled SM Mall of Asia Arena to therafters, to be part of the band’s In a World Like This world tour.

After solid perfor-mances from the frontact, young singer Tip-py Dos Santos, Back-street Boys emergedonstage to the strainsof Everybody , marchingin a deliberate cadenceand shuffling to posi-tion, before launchinginto the R&B and hip-hop-inflected dancetune The Call.

    And before long,people were partying

    By Allan Policarpio

A HANDFUL of songs into theBackstreet Boys’ recent Manilaconcert, the group’s tall, goa-teed bass vocalist, Kevin Richardson, posed a question to the crowd. “Do youall want to take a trip down memory lane with us and party like it’s 1999?”

The final years of the 1990s, of course, were the glory days of teen pop, which theninundated the air- waves with platitudesabout love and friend-ship set to catchy, bur-nished melodies. Boy bands were warringkings; Britney Spears, the undisputed queen. And on Saturday

mornings, you tune into MTV to find out if their new singles were within striking distanceof the No. 1 spot.

On that night, Nick Carter, Brian Littrell, AJ McLean, HowieDorough and Richard-son—by just standingside by side on-stage—brought mem-ories of that music

like it was, indeed,1999. Now, if wecould only part ourhair straight down themiddle and put on apair of baggy pants.

The boys are nowmen, and haveditched their over-sized football jerseysfor form-fitting, dark blue suits. Their hair-lines are a little high-er; their bodies a littlebit softer. But themembers—now intheir late 30s and ear-ly 40s—were stillgoofy and silly as ever.

Carter looked likehe had just downed afew bottles of energy drink, spinning

around, gyrating andthrusting his hips in amanner that’s cringe- worthy and riotous all

at once. And Littrell, midway through aperformance, couldn’tstop himself frombusting out the jig. And much to every-one’s delight, the boys were all praise forManny Pacquiao, andcalled for a rematchagainst Floyd May- weather Jr.

The five perform-ers aren’t springchickens anymore, but that didn’t meanthey couldn’t pull off those sweeping, smooth and oh-so-cheesy dance chore-ography found in themusic videos of songslike All I Have to Give. The harmonizing andthe doo-wop vibe inthe pop-R&B hit werestill on point, but it was extra-comfortingto see that the groupstill has that signature“hat-smoothing” movedown pat.

    New materialThe boys, who

likewise revealed thatthey’ll be returning tothe recording studiosoon to work on their

ninth album, didn’tneglect such new ma-terial as Show ’Em(What You’re Made

Of), Madeleine and Ina World Like This. However, it’s still theolder favorites thatunfailingly elicitedthe most fervent of sing-along sessions.

Almost everyone inthe venue looked to bein their 20s and 30s,as if they screamed forthe Backstreet Boys ashard as teenagers donow for One Direc-tion. And it doesn’tmatter if you’ve out-grown the type of mu-sic they do, or havemoved onto listeningto those “cooler” indiebands. When thegroup performs As Long As You Love Me,Show Me the Meaningof Being Lonely andShape of My Heart, you belt out the vers-es, choruses, bridge, second voices andheck, even hum theinstrumental breaks.

The band, which was formed in Orlan-do, Florida, back in1993, has alwaysprided itself on beingmore than justcutesy—they regard

Boyz II Men as inspi-ration, and could, ac-tually, blend their voices really well.

Thus, they alwaysget out of their way toprove just that duringconcerts. This time, they sang a cappella versions of Drowningand 10,000 Promises , which had the mem-bers playing instru-ments. Littrell, themost imposing singerof the five and theone who sings leadmost of the time, could still hit impres-sive high notes fromtime to time. McLean’shusky and dramatictone, meanwhile, wasstill very much intact.

The BackstreetBoys ended the show, mounted by OvationProductions, by dish-ing out two of theband’s most thumpingpop-dance bangers, Everybody and Largerthan Life. Earlier,Carter said that he wanted the crowd toact like they were 15 years old. And lookingat how the revelersdanced and sang theirhearts out, it did seemlike no one grew up aday older than that.
