Part 1 Introduction and Listening Strategies

Introduction to Part 1

Format

Part 1 consists of 10 questions numbered from 1 to 10. For each question, you will see a photograph and listen to four statements. Your job is to choose the statement that best describes the photograph.

Photograph types Photographs in Part 1 are pictures of ordinary situations. Some of the photographs involve a person or people, some involve an object or a scene without people, and others involve both people and objects/scenes. Based on each particular photograph, you will have an appropriate answer. Thus, if you practice regularly, you can answer the questions in this part easily and accurately.

Listening Strategies to Choose the Correct Answers in Part 1

Overall strategy You should familiarize yourself with common expressions in each type of photographs. If you learn common expressions that are frequently found in photographs of Part 1, you can understand the possible descriptions and easily choose the correct options.

Step-by-step strategy Step 1: Preview the photograph and think of possible descriptions. You should make use of the short time before the recording is played to preview all of the photographs and think of possible descriptions to prepare yourself for Step 2. Step 2: Listen to the descriptions, leave out the incorrect ones and choose the correct statement.

You have to listen to four statements and choose the one statement that best describes each photograph. While listening, try to leave out the statements that seem to be incorrect and choose the correct one.
