Grammar Turkish grammar is simplistic once you get used to the style. However, it can seem to be
very difficult since the grammatical structure is totally different from the Indo-European
languages. This is because Turkish is from a different language family called Ural-Altaic
languages. Some languages similar to Turkish are 'Finnish, Hungarian, Estonian,
Japanese, Korean, Mongolian, Kazak, Uzbek, Tatar, Manchu'. Compared to English,
the most fundamental differences in Turkish grammar can be listed as:
Ordering of sentence parts
o A typical Turkish sentence is ordered as (subject + object + verb)
My friend bought a car.
Arkadaşım [My friend --> subject] araba [car -->object] aldı
[bought-->verb].
No gender
o There are no articles in Turkish, and no gender associated with
words (How do we distinguish “the” and “a”? Mutfaktan tabak aldım. ”a”
Mutfaktan tabağı aldım. ”the” )
o No gender in personal pronouns (the Turkish word for 'he', 'she'
and 'it' is 'O')
Örnek: O, buraya geldi.

Vowel harmony
Harmony of vowels is a very fundamental property of Turkish. The rules concerning
vowel harmony need to be learned as one of the first steps because they affect the way
almost all the other rules are applied.
Turkish vowels
Front Back
Unrounded Rounded Unrounded Rounded
High i ü ı u
Low e ö a o
Front/back harmony
In short: Front vowels (e, i, ö, ü) are followed by front vowels, back vowels (a, ı, o, u) are followed by
back vowels
According to this harmony, if a syllable contains a front vowel, the following syllable
should have front vowel, too. And similarly, if a syllable contains a back vowel, the
following syllable should have back vowel. Most of the Turkish words follow this rule but
there are some exceptions, of course.
For example, let's say you want to add –in suffix to the word kan. Last syllable of the word
contains the vowel a, which is a back vowel. Thus –in changes to ın when it is added to the
word, because i is a front vowel and ı is the back version of it. For this reason, kan + –in
should be kanın
Rounded/unrounded harmony
In short: Rounded vowels (o, ö, u, ü) are followed by closed rounded (u, ü) or open unrounded (a, e)
vowels, and unrounded vowels (a, e, ı, i) are followed by unrounded vowels.
According to this harmony,
1. If a syllable contains a, e, ı or i; next syllable should contain a, e, ı or i (unrounded → unrounded) 2. If a syllable contains o, ö, u or ü; next syllable should contain a, e, u or ü (rounded → open
unrounded and close rounded)
For example, let's say you want to add –di suffix to the verb ol-
ol-
Gamze Sezgin Page 5 of 35
happen, be
. ol- contains only one syllable and that syllable contains o, thus the suffix –di should change to
–du. Because i is back unrounded, its front rounded version is u and this should be used
according to the vowel harmony rules. Hence ol- + –di should be oldu.
* There are some suffixes which don't follow the vowel harmony rules. In this book, invariable vowels in suffixes are shown in this color. These suffixes are:
–ki –ken
–leyin
Examples:
Sabahleyin kahvaltı ettim.
Açken konuşmam.
Kapıdaki kim?
Use of suffixes
o Suffixes are very widely used in Turkish. The meaning of
prepositions, personal pronouns and tenses are all countered by adding
suffixes to word roots.
Kalb-im-desin [You are in my heart] Kalp(n) -> root
Sandalye-den [from the chair] Sandalye(n) -> root
Koş-u-cu [runner] Koş(v) -> root
Once you get to these differences and learn the basic harmony rules, the rest of the
grammar is quite simple. Almost everything follows well defined, simple rules.
Sounds Another important point is the way you read a written text. There is exactly one sound
for each character in Turkish. A character always represents the same sound, regardless
of its position in a word or the characters next to it. Therefore, it is straightforward to
pronounce a word that you see for the first time once you are familiar with the
characters in the Turkish alphabet.

Akşam babası geldiğinde çok yorgundu. Bütün gün çok çalışmıştı. Kızı ona yaklaştı.
“Babacığım, doğum günün kutlu olsun! İşte hediyen!” dedi. Babası paketi açtı ama içinde hiç
birşey yoktu. Sinirlendi. “Ama bu boş” dedi. Küçük kız neredeyse ağlayacaktı. “O paketin içine
opücükler ve sevgi koymuştum” dedi. Babası bunu duyunca çok üzüldü ve kızına sarıldı. “Bu
benim aldığım en güzel hediye, teşekkür ederim güzel kızım” dedi.
